I appreciate Half Bad so much for its representation of what it is to be mixed race. As I am mixed race I always find myself looking for works that accurately represent the situation that I find myself in. I should also say that I love it so much because he is mixed the way I am mixed, half black and half white and raised by the white side. Also the race war between the bloods and fairborns was so well done with neither side being what it is supposed to be. The bloods being ruthless indeed but in order to protect themselves. The fairborns raiding and killing under the guise of protecting themselves. Chef's kiss!
Half Bad shows us a boy who everybody is always trying to define. They always ask him what are you? Because they want to fit him in a premade hole and then sleep well at night. But they don't have a hole for him that he fits so it annoys them. He also gets vilified by both sides (I think that one is often overlooked in real life as I didn't realize it was a thing until it happened to me). He is too Blood for some and too Fairborn for others. What is he? The eternal question that is honestly nobody's business.
People always assume he is one thing (blood) while he identifies more with the other side (Fairborn) because that is how he was raised. So in the end he is accepted by neither. He also finds his own way to define himself by finding himself in the mix because he is neither one nor the other, he is both and he is the mix. I just think it's beautiful to see such an accurate representation of being mixed. I think often mixed characters are written by people who identify as one whole of something and so often the mixed characters are either exoticized or relegated to one side with a few half hearted attempts to cross over. Of course this is not backed by any research whatsoever...
Anyway, if you want to check out the mixed people's bill of rights here it is! It's a great read and changed my life.

I think there’s a beauty in being ambiguous to some extent. You can cross over into different spaces and maybe that allows you to bring a new perspective into the world and identify with others that don’t fit into a space. If I can connect with someone who’s othered in terms of ableism, their sexuality or whatever, because of my heritage, that’s useful. I like the way that I am and I wouldn't want to be any other way – I guess that's what I like about being mixed. . . I will admit upfront that this is just 100% me being bitter, and probably a bit petty, not to mention basically just repeating myself since I’ve said stuff like this before in previous posts, but as a biracial person, I really wish that there was more representation/recognition of biracial people, and the mixed-race experience, not only in canon media, but in more fandom circles.

so i've been meaning to post this for a minute but kept forgetting. what do you all think about these patterns of identity? anything need to be improved? added? now this isn't about division, it's actually about being inclusive of all people who are mixed race. not all of us are just biracial. some of us have one mixed parent. some have two (like myself). which leads to many varieties of experiences. at the end of the day, we are all more than one thing, so why are we all forced to identify just ONE way? i do like the fact that monoracial identifying mixed people are represented here. again, everyone chooses their own identity and some may not have been exposed to both/all sides of themselves, no fault of their own. barack obama is a prime example too, he knows he's mixed race and celebrates it. society, though, sees him as black and treats him as such. now that im older and understand more about the mixed experience and still learning every day (with all my followers help), i identify as a multiple monoracial according to this. yes im a mixed woman. im also a black woman. im also an indigenous woman. both my mom and dad are mixed with irish. my dad also has a significant amount that's british, which also makes me white. i gotta admit im still processing that last part because of recent discoveries within my family tree. remember, we only choose our own identities, no one else. all of these mixed experiences and identities are valid. please be nice in the comments and please tag source! ❤️🧡💖 #mixedgirlproblems #mixed #mixedrace #beingmixed #mixedidentities #mixedpeople https://www.instagram.com/p/CpNypvOuYVb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Being Biracial
This is a more serious topic for me so, please, feel free to add to the conversation if you're biracial. Now, my father is black, and my mother is white; and while I love being biracial, I can't help but feel isolated from both sides of my family. My mother is white, but ever since I was little I identified more with the POC experience. My mother began to resent me because of my little effort to learn German and my urge to learn languages of predominantly POC speakers (Spanish, Korean, Japanese). I always connected more with my dads side, but even then I couldn't fully be black. I have light brown skin, wavy hair, hooded eyes. People much more often would mistake me as Latina or even Hawaiian??? I always admire black women with protective hairstyles, but I can't even have that myself because I don't have the right hair for it. So many questions run through my head. Am I even really POC? Why can't I connect more with my mother? What even is the point of race at all? On a lighter note...I'm bisexual, biracial, and soon to be bilingual with my Spanish lessons. Anyways, thanks for listening to my racial existential crisis. If you have anything to add...then do!

Okay something I really need people to understand is that you can both be proud of your black side if youre mixed and acknowledge that you have white privilege if youre white passing. they arent mutually exclusive
