While it might look like an abstract painting, it's actually the surface pattern off a cedar tree trunk washed up onto the beach. I found it to be a fascinating mix of shading, energy and flow. I can see people, fish, the flow of rivers - the record of a whole life story just waiting to be discovered and retold.

How to Get Your Home Ready for Painters
You’ve chosen your colours and hired your painters. The start date has been decided on and you have plans for keeping the kids busy while the painters get to work. You’re ready for the job to start, right? Wrong.
Turns out, there is plenty more to do to prepare your home for residential painters in Vancouver. Whether you’re re-doing the interior or the exterior of your home, you can save time and money by taking on some of the prep work done by painters yourself. What’s more, some items that need to be stored, moved or covered likely have sentimental value to you.
If you are preparing your home for residential painters in Vancouver, read on for some tips to keep in mind when it comes to getting the house ready.

Interior
· Cover your furniture. Professional residential painters will cover your floors, couches, tables, and chairs with drop cloths, but you can save time by doing it yourself.
· Move Small Items. A 2-3 man crew working on your home takes up a lot of space. Ladders, cans, and trays of paint and other materials will make it hard for them to move around freely, and that problem becomes compounded if smaller pieces of furniture are not removed. Things like smaller tables, free-standing lamps, and rocking chairs should be relocated rather than covered.
· Take down wall hangings but leave the nails. Photos, paintings, and other decorative wall hangings will need to be removed and safely stored, but it’s important to leave the nails in place. Otherwise, the painters will likely fill the hole that is left behind.
· Clean Up. It’s important to make sure that the room being worked on is as clean as possible before the work starts. Not only does this protect workers from hazardous waste, but it ensures the best possible outcome, as grease, dust, or dirt could prevent the paint from drying evenly.
· Empty Cabinets. For some larger pieces of furniture, like China cabinets and entertainment units, keeping them in place is easier than moving them. Still, your painters will likely have to shift them a little bit to get every inch of the room painted evenly. Emptying the cabinet ensures that nothing gets broken, and it makes moving the cabinet easier for the painters if they need to.
Exterior
· Clear space. Just like working inside, having deck furniture, piles of wood, children’s toys, and bikes in the way impedes your painter’s ability to get the job done safely and quickly. Clear as much workspace as you can.
· Pressure wash your walls. Removing dirt and dust will ensure that the paint applied will adhere to the exterior of your home.

Zinnia elegans (common zinnia) and Vanessa cardui (painted lady butterfly)
Vanessa cardui is the most widespread butterfly in the world. It is found throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and Central America. Although it lives only in warm climates, painted ladies often migrate to colder regions in spring and fall. When migrating they can fly 100 miles a day, and butterflies from North Africa fly over the Mediterranean Sea to Europe on a regular basis. Painted lady butterflies have been found as far north as Iceland.
This painted lady stopped in our back garden this afternoon. It took five minutes to chow down on a pink zinnia and then, when it had had it’s fill, it was gone! Maybe it’s on it’s way to California. Bon voyage, my little friend.
