Character: Moon Knight
From: Marvel (Comics + Show)
Representation: Jewish, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Abuse Survivor, Autistic (Steven Grant), Latino (show only)
Their Importance: In superhero comics, an unfortunate recurring trope is that a character with a known mental illness or disorder will typically be a villainous character. Moon Knight is unique, then, for being a superhero with an explicit diagnosis of DID, having at least three distinct alters. While he will occasionally cross the line into being an "anti-hero", overall he's consistently portrayed as a noble and good person.
Many of the comics that feature Moon Knight provide an empathetic look at the experiences of someone with DID. The comics discuss difficulties with medications, with therapists, and Moon Knight's various struggles with how to manage his alters.
Moon Knight's Jewish identity isn't discussed as frequently but is still depicted as being very important to him. He is the son of a Rabbi and is shown to observe Jewish holidays. Additionally, Moon Knight practices a religion based on Egyptian mythology and discusses with other characters how being Jewish and practicing other religions is not mutually exclusive.
In the show, Oscar Isaac also stated that the alter Steven Grant is autistic, something that Isaac intentionally played in his portrayal of Steven. We get to learn more about Marc and Steven, and see them both in romantic interactions with Marc’s wife, Layla - who initially insists that Steven is Marc, but after learning about them having the disorder, acknowledges both Steven and Marc as their own individual selves. We get to see Steven and Marc becoming more of a cohesive unit and growing closer to each other, and by the end of the season, the two have excellent communication and are co-conscious with one another, and have accepted each other as important and needed parts of their system.
Issues: It's only been within the past decade that writers have finally settled on Moon Knight having specifically DID. In the decades preceding, much of the language discussing his disorder had been either outdated (like calling his disorder "Multiple Personality Disorder") or incorrect (such as conflating DID with schizophrenia despite them being completely separate disorders).
Additionally, how competently the subject of DID is handled depends on the creative team that's writing the character, often leading to many wildly different and occasionally unflattering approaches to the subject of disorders.
There is also another alter, Jake Lockley, who has at times been incorrectly portrayed or viewed as an “evil” alter, depending on the writer. It is unclear right now where a continuation of Moon Knight would go with his portrayal in the live action, but some fans have expressed concern on his introduction to the show, and how it could potentially add to negative stigmas about DID.
Also, just as a general note,  episode 1x05 delves into their mother’s physical and emotional abuse, which is obviously very triggering for some people to watch.
Thanks to @silver-stargazing and anon for the write-up!

Having survived abuse from people with mental illnesses, I know the urge to warn others to be wary of those mental illnesses. I know how often it can feel like that is your only power in life…the only action you can take against what you went through. But listen. Just because a mentally ill person caused you complex trauma, doesn’t mean you get to generalize and slander and malign every person with that mental illness.
You do not have to forgive your abusers. but you do have to heal without spreading stigma and misinformation. you do have to heal without antagonizing or dehumanizing others who are also just trying to heal. you have to help break the cycle. because nobody can heal alone.

there are a lot of reasons i'm really, really impressed by how well sdmi portrayed the dynamic of an abusive relationship with pericles and ricky, and one of the big ones is how accurately they show what it looks like when abuse starts to escalate.
the extent of that is yet another thing that'll take a longpost of its own to go into, because it spans like.... the entire arc of their relationship in the show. but one thing that stands out to me in particular is their portrayal of the massive red flag that is a partner trotting out bigoted behavior against a group you're in. especially insults, and especially directed right at you.
Tumblr media
this show has a LOT of fatphobia, jesus christ does it ever, and there are certainly some fatphobic tropes going on with ricky; but i've always been surprised and impressed by how many of the nastier ones they avoided, especially considering his role in the story and what his arc is about.
he is a major, nuanced character whose trauma is treated with full weight and sincerity. it's implied that his body type changed the way it did due to the trauma he went through when he was younger, and the ensuing mental illness, which is a pretty realistic experience for a lot of people. the things that happen to him are played for full tragedy and horror, when it would have been so, so easy for them to make light of it because Tee Hee Fat Guy and Tee Hee Male Abuse Victims Funnee. despite how his whole thing involves corporate greed, they don't go the route of portraying him as Gluttonous and Hedonistic; if anything he is very obviously not using all that money for even basic physical self-care, and the only time we ever see him eating anything it's when he's drinking wine grape juice with pericles. which, like, there's issues to be unpacked with that too, but jesus christ it's an improvement over what usually happens with characters like him.
he's a fat queer man who isn't degendered or made feminine in a mocking and/or predatory way. (there's nothing wrong with feminine fat queer men and they need more non-shitty rep, please and thank you god, but there is a lot of nastiness in the tropes they're often used for in mainstream media, and one of those tropes is when people consider 'fat queer man' and 'masc' to be oxymorons.) no one ever once calls him ugly; if anything multiple people in his life think he's attractive and desirable, for better or for worse. no one body-shames him. and no one ever mentions his weight.
except pericles.
'The Horrible Herd' and 'The Devouring' are two halves of a whole here, re: escalation of abuse. 'Devouring' is when the abuser goes full mask off and shit hits the fan; 'Horrible Herd' is the wind-up before the punch. HH is when ricky realizes things are getting Bad and he needs to put a stop to this now, and Devouring shows what happens when he tries, because by the point where it's gotten bad enough to give him a wakeup call it's already too late. it's how abusive relationships tend to go, and it's chillingly accurate.
and what's one of the things pericles says during Horrible Herd when that punch is winding up? something no one's ever said before now, including him? 'you pudding-faced dummkopf.'
he body-shames him. he insults his weight, and that's a major turning point. bigotry is something that's often there to some degree from the start, but not always, because some abusers are good at hiding things like that until they're confident they've got you where they want you. the message with ricky and pericles is loud and clear: when this happens, the walls are dripping blood. get out.
(if you can. and be careful when you try.)
when this show is good, it is really, truly good. god damn.

Gav I am SO sorry for the length of this ….. also I am going to send a general “how are you doing ask” because this is all Jamie stuff (very therapeutic to talk about him after the week I’ve had) so I hope that’s okay!!!
Okay. So.
Jamie in this episode? A delight. I mean, he’s always a delight but WOW, I didn’t think I could love him more. And I LOVE that he was so happy and silly and having fun and I don’t want my take to take away from that (because I have been in the state I think he was in many times before).
I don’t know if this was intentional from Phil, but I think Jamie was manic in this episode — specifically trauma induced mania. I think that Amsterdam, understandably, was a HUGE trigger for him.
In that heartbreaking scene where Jamie shares something very difficult with Roy, he says “even though my dad weren’t there, it was like he was still with us, y’know?”
Cut to:
Jamie mimicking his dad’s mannerisms from his very first scene (the play punches, the frenetic energy)
Jamie reverting to being a prick for all of two seconds (the tie your laces comment was probably something he heard from his father) to see how far he could push Roy before Roy snapped at him
Running Roy ragged across the streets of Amsterdam the entire episode lol
This sent me spiralling a little because there is SO much evidence to show that Jamie was in trauma / manic in this episode, and how those mannerisms relate to that.
Cut to:
Nonstop movement, running, round offs, bouncing up and down on the spot
Lack of attention span and impulsivity — deciding they need bikes and running off to find them using his street smarts (again, likely mimicking what he has seen his father do) and also deciding that they HAVE to find a windmill. Like absolutely determined, nothing was stopping that boy lmao
Peaking in energy and then suddenly calming down once he’s taught Roy how to ride a bike
Info-dumping and non stop talking
Being confused why Roy wouldn’t want to join in on his imagined adventure “these bikes have just made tonight AMAZING!”
Now listen. Being a person with mania, you can be manic and still be …. you. I think so many of these Jamie moments are hilarious and adorable and not all down to that, but he was DEFINITELY in trauma … getting to that now:
He’s in this crazy good mood the whole night, and then he decides to share ….. the thing ….. with Roy. I think that might be his subconscious bringing up this trauma and sort of explaining the mood he’s been in, which is extremely chaotic for the entire episode until he voices it. Even if he doesn’t KNOW it’s traumatising (“she loved it”), there is something going on here. And the fact that he SUBCONSCIOUSLY, maybe even consciously I don’t know, recognised that being in Amsterdam was a trigger for him and then apologised for the way it made him behave ??????? I’m actually tearing up thinking about it I’m so fucking proud that is UNBELIEVABLE
Also. “I don’t really remember.”
I don’t think I need to explain to you how fucking heart wrenching that is but. Fuck.
This is a super jumbled and badly put mess of an ask because I am very sleep deprived but. This episode just meant so much to me because I relate to Jamie SO MUCH in this. I have genuinely had a night very similar and I am almost certainly projecting but. Yeah. To people with abuse trauma, at least for me, this was genuinely the most nuanced depiction of it that I’ve ever, EVER seen, and I don’t even know if they did it on purpose.
IM SO SORRY FOR THIS ITS NOT VERY GOOD READING IT OVER. I am definitely projecting. And also want to be clear that it isn’t JUST trauma stuff like this is also a very wholesome development in Roy and Jamie’s relationship with some very touching and hilarious moments that I’m terrified to undermine and I’m scared it’s an awful take but. Just needed to share it with you
ALLL MY LOVE AS ALWAYS <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
never apologize for long messages!!!! i love long messages i love hearing from and chatting with my pals including my pen pals.... and like yeah. yeah i have been so much thinking about all of this. like he was happy! he was really happy at a lot of points in that episode but it had a bit of a weird exaggerated energy that didn't click until that point later when he told that. frankly brutal story that like ah, okay, that all makes sense now. he was upbeat and happy and it was clear he was having a good time and like you said, it was a lovely and touching and hilarious sequence in their subplot but 'manic' is the word that kept coming to mind. like, when you've got a mix of horrifying feelings and happy feelings about something and you decide no, i'm HAPPY i'm focusing on the good part i am FINE it's FINE it's all FINE, see how happy i am? see how normal and not ruined i am??
and yeah same i feel the same way about like- regardless of whether it was done intentionally that combination of that almost manic energy and 'i don't remember' and the way he brings it up as like- you get the feeling, really, that he knows on some level that what happened to him there was deeply, profoundly not okay, but doesn't quite know how to talk about it? gave me the same feeling that some of his comments earlier to higgins and ted did like. 'i want someone to tell me this wasn't okay, but i don't know how to say it.' and yeah like. the i don't remember comment... man that hit hard. his behaviour in that whole scene hit hard.
and that line about like. even though he wasn't there he was there with us..... winded me. that line winded me. if you grow up with an angry man in your house there will always be an angry man in your house, if you are born in a burning house you think the whole world is on fire, etc etc. it's a really complex and extremely familiar portrait of abuse trauma and i really, really appreciated seeing it. even if it's reading too much into it, even if it's projecting, i really appreciated it.
and man the whole thing especially with him bringing it up and then apologizing to roy like- i'm really proud of him for that too. he's trying really, extremely hard this season and doing such a good job of Being An Adult, being responsible, being accountable, being Good. even in situations where it has to feel unbelievably scary and threatening - going to the coaches about zava and presenting his concerns to the whole room full of authority figures he admires and respects, telling roy that story and then taking the initiative to apologize, even before this season, 'if you know how to make me better, i want to hear it' - it's just like. he's giving everything he has to do better, be better. he's- gutting himself, in pursuit of Being Good, in a couple of different ways and MAN it's like. it's hard to watch but it's incredible to watch at the same time. man. there's a reason this character absolutely kills me.

Indigenous women who are csa/child abuse survivors or have bpd:
What would you say to writers who are writing an indigenous character with bpd and trauma?
(For context, the character develops bpd from trauma. This is part of the backstory. Not the entire story).

what the heck have i just read,,,
guys, there are a lot of similarities between all the members of the party. they all are outcasts of some kind, they all share some general traits (hence why they became friends in the first place), and they're all going through similar experiences as a result of their involvement with the upside down and all that.
but they're all unique individuals who all have their own struggles and character arcs and none of them exist purely to give depth to the other -_- parallels exist to add layers to certain aspects of the character's stories and the overall narrative, not to reduce an entire character's journey to those similarities and then proceed to ignore everything else about them. that is such a shallow way to consume the source material we all enjoy :|
it's okei to like certain characters more, and it's okei to point out all the little hints the duffs have left woven throughout the entire show to hint towards what's going to happen next with certain individuals and plot lines,,,
just don't reduce the entirety of one main character's existence to some very specific moments and traits in order to justify or enrich someone else's arc >:\
#✒️#💡#🧸#this is about some random post claiming max “was created” to add onto will's arc btw. which is... yeah...#while somewhat similar in the way they both got targetted by vecna. they each have their own experiences in that regard :\#(the same applies w mike btw. there are some strong madwheeler parallels in s4 but that doesn't mean mike is getting a copy of her arc e.e)#(also. pet peeve of mine (tw // suicide): the post claimed max's s4 arc is confirmation that will is suicidal... /but he isn't/ :|#just like mike isn't suicidal just because he chose to jump off the quarry that one time to save dustin. will telling everyone to close the#gate in s2 was not him being suicidal per se. it was him trying to save his family and friends even if it came at the expense of his life.#yes this ties in to his low self-worth. yes by definition mike and will were technically killing themselves in both these incidents.#and yes both mike and will show signs of them being depressed in different levels and ways. but self-sacrificial tendencies don't#immediately translate to an active pursuit of death. particularly when they only did their thing in moments /when their loved ones were in#peril/ x.x) alas. i digress. just please stop throwing words around and fanfic-icating everything. and please stop taking max's arc#and making it everyone's but hers :\ it was a great representation of survivor's guilt and the conflicting relationship an abusee has with#their abuser and that 3-season-long plot line only works with her -_-#anyway. just be careful of your wording when discussing parallels :\

You know, it's really fucked up how bee fans are okay with Blake being a damsel in distress and tortured cause she's part of an oppressed fantasy minority and is queer but if she was straight and in a heteronormative relationship with a boy they wouldnt hesitate to march over to Roosterteeth with pitch forks.

When I was part of the Christian community every day I witnessed homophobes in this system and how much religious spread prejudice around the world. They exclude people who choose another sexual orientation or gender identity. So their holy book is used as a justification for condemning these people and spreading dissension, along with other absurd opinions I've heard in this system regarding this.
So the system indoctrinates children from an early age to be prejudiced by people who choose another sexual orientation and that they will go to hell. Not only does Christianity have repulsive teachings, there are other similar religions. Leaving this system was the best choice of my life,a system that oppresses and abuses in many ways and doctrines based on a doctored and prehistoric book full of abusive and patriarchal teachings.
I will raise my children free of any carcinogenic and religious doctrine and I will show them that they are free to choose their gender and sexual option, that this is not wrong nor even strange,as the system tries to preach and create a taboo, when in truth is nothing but prejudice.
So if my son is a man, I'm not going to teach him or indoctrinate him that this is a girl thing, that's a boy thing,if he wants to wear makeup, dresses, play dolls, have relationships with men in adulthood or be a woman he will be free for that and he will have my support and love, he will grow up in an environment where this is normal free of judgments, free of prejudices. So I say the same if it's a girl, she's free to choose her gender and sexual option and play and use whatever she wants.
I want to have a family where they trust me and feel welcomed and comfortable and not afraid of me,I don't want my family members condemning people to hell, or for their sexual orientation, clothes, gender, "nonstandard" choices like as the religion and the regime in which we live doctrine.
They will grow up learning that this is normal and not weird or sinful.

Character: Crazy Jane
From: Doom Patrol
Representation: Dissociative Identity Disorder, Latina, Abuse survivor, WLW (lesbian)
Their Importance: Jane is the primary alter (the one who fronts in the body most) when the body (originally Kay Challis) was a young child, she was repeatedly abused and sexually abused by her father, it led to her developing DID. The system has around 64 alters (each having their own super power) inhabiting in the underground (the innerworld of this system is called The Underground) The way Doom Patrol shows the different alters and the importance of alters having special roles/jobs (gatekeepers, protectors etc..) is very well done. It shows how the Underground works, some alters go dormant, some even die, and there are alters who have memory of trauma and some who do not. In the underground not all alters’s apperances match the body, different heights, ages, or races.
Jane is also attracted to a woman named Shelley in the show, and her actress confirmed the character is a lesbian on twitter.
Issues: Jane’s nickname “Crazy Jane” can be seen as problematic, but I believe it’s the name the character has from the original comics.
Thanks to @saltyyagi for the write-up!

i don't know why out of all the gags in sdmi i lose it over this one probably the most, but oh my god
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
something about the combination of how quick and understated it is, the extremely dark and tragic surrounding context, the scene already being really obvious innuendo, and the fact that in the midst of all this they Had to put it in for This is a Kid's Show reasons before moving on with the murder plot and the murderers' abusive relationship picking back up where it left off. and that they managed to slip a gag in without lessening the impact of that or making light of it. it's genuinely deft and it kills me every single time

HAZBIN AND SA (+HB)
TW: SA and RAPE
THIS ITSELF DOESN'T TALK ABOUT THE SCENE! But the surrounding context.
So I really hate everything about how this has being treated. I am a SA victim and wanna talk about some stuff. If you didn't know, in episode 4 (I think) there is an exploration of Angel Dust SA, before going to do that lets see some stuff first:
She made a "cumming" joke about the song Poison (that accompanies the SA scenes)
Tumblr media
This person over here worked on HH/HB (draws r-pe/non-con)
Tumblr media
BLURRED AND CUTTED IMAGES: (Some are more or less explicit)
Tumblr media
You know, that whole thing of shipping, and drawing porn of the canonical sexual abuser with the victim?
Tumblr media
They also left this comment, under a comic where Val threatens brutal r-pe on Angel.
Tumblr media
This person also worked in/directed the scenes of Angel dust Sexual abuse in the episode. The person that ships a r-pe ship and does all this shit is the one to work in this scene?????
ALSO????
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like??????? What happen here?
Also...
Tumblr media
(The pinkie pfp person is 15 here too)
Why does Angel sexually harrases Husk non-stop (which is acknowledged by Vaggie)? Why is Moxxie SA by the succubus played for laughs? Same with Chaz or Blitz harassing him sexually or touching him without consent? Why did Stolas do so many unwanted advances towards Blitz, and that's literally the endgame couple of the show? (All of this are jokes, or by the Husk x Angel shit "ship moments"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHY THIS TOO?
Tumblr media
And yes you are "correct", something like Hypersexuality Trauma-should not being shamed. You are not a bad person, for dealing with this. BUT HEY, that doesn't mean you get to sexually harass people like Angel does to Husk or anyone.
Also, the problem is not having an SA victim's story. The problem is how it is treated and all the context that surrounds it. All of this above is that context! Why is so much SA jokes in Helluva? Why is that funny? You want to tell a story of SA, and anyone calling out the problems with it is deleting victims feelings and stories... YOU AND YOUR STUPID FUCKING JOKES DO THAT ALREADY. WHEN SA IS A JOKE FOR YOU, YOU ARE DIMINISHING SA AND R-PE.
There are also a lot of random fans saying that "Viv is an SA victim too"- #1 Where the fuck did she say that, cause you randomly saying that she said it doesn't mean shit. #2 DOESN'T DELETE THE WAY SA HAS BEING TREATED! THIS IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO MAKING A JOKE AS AN SA VICTIM ABOUT YOURSELF- SHE/AND OTHER IN THE TEAM ARE WRITING CHARACTERS GETTING SEXUALLY ASSAULTED AS THE JOKE. -OR NOT UNDERSTAND LEGIT POWER DYNAMICS AND THE GROSS THING THAT STOLAS DOES TO BLITZ. OR THE LITERAL "SHIP COMPILATION" THAT IS PURELY ANGEL SEXUALLY HARASSING HUSK.
"Is important to represent SA survivors stories- specially men who-" BROTHER ALL YOUR OTHER MALE CHARACTERS SEXUALLY HARRASS/ASSAULT OTHERS AS A JOKEEEE. "They are in hell" BITCH A HUMAN, A REAL PERSON WORKING ON THE SHOW WROTE hahaha Moxxie gets violated by the succubus so funny lol. IT'S NOT "LOONA IS A BAD PERSON FROM HELL THAT'S WHY SHE MADE FAT JOKES AT MOXXIE" NO IT'S WRITTEN AS IF THE SA WAS FUNNY IN ITSELF!
This is also not a scenario where there was a realization of the problems in HB with all those jokes and the harassment, so it was trying to be fixed with a serious story in hazbin. NO, THAT'S NOT IT!!!!
If there was an apology of how the sexual assault was treated in previous works! "We'll make up for it!" (the fact of that was a thing in the first place, it's still bad). That would be a little different. BUT NO, IT'S NOT! IT'S HYPOCRITICAL AND GARBAGE BULLSHIT.
I think purely by the context already given here that I think the representation it's bad. I don't feel like it comes from a good place, due to the hypocritical shit, the comments, and the artist who directed it.
We could go really back and forth with the direct scenes of the episode. BUT THIS IS ABOUT THE CONTEXT SURROUND IT rather than the scenes themselves. (Which is partly connected to the fact that it's incomplete)
Here is the scene "Tuca and Bertie". Is Bertie telling her friend of her assault. It's amazingly respectful and well written. It's not graphic, and tells the story really well.
