ok I got around to the cinema tonight and can now do a full review so THOR: LOVE & THUNDER SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT!!
first off, let me just say: TAIKA. MOTHERFUCKING. WAITITI. this man has done so much for the Thor movies and has really brought so much richness and colour into the MCU. this movie was equal parts funny and emotional and I had such a blast watching it!!!
I’ve seen a few people say that it doesn’t feel like a cohesive movie narratively and to that I’d say I disagree completely; it’s just not as cohesive within the larger story of the MCU. Personally, I don’t think that takes away from the movie at all!! I never felt like there was something missing, it does a good job at being a very solid standalone movie. Thor as a character has always thrived in his solo movies far more than in the big plans of the MCU, I find. When he gets tossed into a group setting such as the Avengers, he ends up becoming more like the butt of the joke (hence, the offensive fat Thor bit they had in Endgame). I find here, in his solo movies, they maintain that himbo energy while also letting him have depth and be serious when necessary.
There are a few other smaller things to cover before the next big things I want to discuss, such as the POST CREDITS SCENEEEE. As a Ted Lasso super fan, seeing Brett Goldstein as Hercules a) made me scream in my seat, and b) makes SO MUCH SENSE. He’s here, he’s there, he’s every-fucking-where, and Mr. Roy Kent has a growl and bark to him that makes his energy so perfect. AMAZING CASTING!! And now that Cristo Fernandez AKA Dani Rojas was a bartender in the end credit for Spiderman NWH, the Ted Lasso -> MCU pipeline has been created and can only get stronger from here! My heart is bursting at the seams!! Also, round of applause to the screaming goats because that never failed to make me laugh. And no, I’m not just saying that because it was inspired by the Taylor Swift goat parody of I Knew You Were Trouble. And finally, I’d like to shout out Taika for making me fall back in love with Thor and Janes as a couple because this is the movie that really gave us the dynamic and love between them that the others never could. Here, they felt real and earnest and truly connected. The chemistry with Chris and Natalie was very solid and I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m going to miss their relationship a lot!
Now let’s talk about the next big thing: the queer rep. This is where a lot of people are divided, with some saying it was super gay and some saying the representation was underwhelming and disappointing for something that was “marketed as a super gay film”. However, I’m not sure I agree with either of those statements. Was it super gay? No, not at all. There were definitely some much appreciated confirmations of queerness with more than one character I suppose, but none of it felt worthy of it being marketed as extremely gay. That being said, there is a difference between Taika and Tessa calling it super gay and it being specifically marketed as super gay. At no point in any of the interviews or promos did they promise deep and prominent queer exploration. It’s also worth noting that Disney has a lot of control over the story, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Taika had wanted to make it even gayer and the higher-ups had said no. Also keep in mind that there WAS allegedly a version of this movie where Valkyrie’s whole storyline was romantic and she had a love interest, but Tessa didn’t want love to be the center of Valkyrie’s story and wanted a different route, so they rolled with it. So overall, the movie didn’t contain as much queer content as I had anticipated, but I don’t think it was a baiting attempt or a downside to the movie in any way. We got what we got, and even though it wasn’t a gay extravaganza, what we got was very solid.
The part of this movie that shines the most though has to be Christian Bale as Gorr. Not only was he completely fucking terrifying, but he was also, at the same time somehow, a villain I could sympathize with much more than Thanos. This movie was all about love and loss and how they intertwine, and Gorr reflects that just as much as Thor does, though in their separate ways. And let’s just take a minute to appreciate the differences between Gorr and Thanos because!!! hello!!! Thanos kills his own daughter for a goal of his that is purely economic/practical (in his mind) whereas Gorr literally makes a vow to kill every single god in existence just because his god didn’t save his daughter!! That is so beautiful!! And to think that I was more scared of Gorr than I ever was of Thanos, and yet still simultaneously more moved by Gorr. And in the end, he HAS to do the right thing!! His motivations and beliefs REQUIRE it!! If he had used his wish to kill all the gods when he could have used it to bring his daughter back, he would have been willfully refusing to save her and would therefore have been a hypocrite and just like the gods themselves. This movie did a fantastic job of answering the question: what happens when a villain’s motivation is, truly and without falter, love?
Overall, when looking at the bigger picture of the MCU, this movie does not contribute much and probably isn’t the best of the best. But I think I like it better that way??? It’s a movie that shines beautifully on its own, whereas something like Dr Strange MOM (even though it also found its strength in the director’s strong stylistic tone coming through) had its faults even if you did look at it as a standalone movie, which is why this one is just so much more enjoyable. I would rate this movie a solid 8.7/10

finally writing something I’ve been trying to write for like four years.
1 little bit from each finished segment:
Love is a child, an actual living breathing child with needs and wants and fears and hopes, whose continued existence is entirely relying on Thor having most of his shit together most of the time.
“Captain Marvel, she’s great,” Thor says, nodding, sifting through the bottles littering the table until he finds one that hasn’t been drained. “I like her.” He sounds cheerier, at least, but Bruce can see past it by now.
He’s brought back to reality this time by the vendor yelling at him to order, so Thor collects up a bag full of hot dogs and another full of condiments, then spots the next stall over - authentic Asgardian mead, the sign promises.
“You’re going to be sorry when you have to spend all day tomorrow getting your ceremonial armor fitted. Imagine it, brother, standing under those hot lights for hours while somebody pokes and prods at you? And Mother and Father giving their input besides?”
Apparently if he bought the special commemorative official Asgardian plastic tankard, he would get discounts on refills. His time with the guardians had taught him how to bargain shop.
It takes a long moment to realize that Thor is being dead serious. “Wha- I mean, you can look one way on the outside and feel different on the inside, you know?” Does he know? Has Thor’s outside always matched his inside until recently?
All of that tension he’s been holding is bleeding away; this is what he seeks out after Love is asleep and when he’s alone with his own thoughts, but the difference now is he’s not alone. And he feels so much better now. Maybe he’d been wrong in hiding this part of himself from Love, maybe he can feel this way all the time.
Five to go…

Ok so I saw Thor: Love & Thunder for the third time and I have some thoughts.
Here's a few things I wish had been done differently:
Get rid of the jokes in the opening scene. They completely ruined the vibe. It felt like Gorr and Rapu were acting in completely different films.
In general, the film could have done with a lot less "joking during a serious moment." I have no complaints about jokes in Marvel films, but it really bothers me when the jokes get in the way of emotional moments.
I know I sound like every other Marvel fan, but I think that with Gorr being the villain, it would have been a lot better for the film to be more serious.
The tone of the film varied so much between scenes it was a bit jarring.
I didn't really mind that the Guardians were written out so early. It's not their film + it would have felt too crowded.
Mighty Thor introduction was super cool though.
I also really liked the music used in the film!
A common complaint about the film that I've seen is that no one ever disproved Gorr's point that "all gods must die." In fact, the film is basically on Gorr's side, since it shows most of the gods acting like assholes.
So what I think would solve this problem would be to show the gods actually care about their worshipers.
One way this could be shown would be during Korg's "death." Instead of him surviving because "the only part of a Kronan that's alive is its mouth" (which ????), he survives because he is secretly saved by Ninny of the Nonny (who's right there! Plus, this would make one of the jokes have actual plot importance)
Maybe some of the gods in Omnipotence City could be shown as actually caring about stopping Gorr but too afraid to act in defiance of Zeus?
Don't have Korg interrupt Thor and Jane's moment on the ship!! It was so, so, unnecessary and it really ruined the mood.
The whole Gorr fight scene on that gray moon (?) was amazing. The VFX artists outdid themselves with the lighting. (rip Marvel VFX artists)
I've seen several people here on tumblr mention that they hated how Valkyrie was nerfed in the end. And yes, I agree that her excuse about not going to fight Gorr because she "would probably die" is totally out of character for her.
She's mentioned several times that she longs to die in battle and reach Valhalla, (she even goes as far as to say "if you're a viking you basically have to die in battle" at one point which both Sif AND Thor reinforce) and this is the perfect moment for that!
So I propose this: during the aftermath of the kid's kidnapping, have all of the Asgardians look to her for help. Have her realize how much she means to these people. And then instead of deciding to not go fight Gorr because she would probably die, have her choose not to go because even though she wants to reach Valhalla, she realizes that she has a duty to her people.
A lot of people had a problem with the child army but ??? Thor gave them the power to face their fears and fight! I think that's great. Would you rather have had them just stand there? Thor's awesome, but I don't think he could have handled fighting Gorr AND protecting the children from the shadow monsters.
Before we get to the ending I'd like to point out how GORGEOUS Eternity looks. One of the best parts of the film.
Ok, now my least favorite part: Gorr's wish.
It just made no sense to me at ALL to have him wish for his daughter back. He knew he was dying (he even said so himself!) and why dump her on Thor?? Poor kid would have to see her father die in front of her.
I didn't like how Gorr went from "destroy all gods" to "raise daughter from the dead" in one (1) Thor speech. Yes, I liked that he was redeemed, but that was not the way to go!!
I've been thinking about how I would have liked the film to end but I honestly can't think of anything, so here are my half baked ideas:
1. Gorr hears Thor's speech (which was nice btw - I liked the part of choosing to be with Jane in his final moments) and decides NOT to kill the gods, does nothing, and promptly dies. Who know what they do with their wish. (I'd rather not have them undo Jane's death because that was actually really well done).
2. Gorr realizes that there are some gods that do care for their people. (after Thor's speech he remembers all the gods that he killed - maybe some of them died protecting their people?) and decides that Eternity is too big a temptation for anyone, so he wishes for Eternity's gate to never open again.
3. Gorr realizes he is dying and decides that he wants to see his daughter one last time (NOT bring her to life). He wishes to see her again, and as soon as he dies, Love disappears as well.
Really liked the tribute to Jane at the end (the statue), as well as the two post credit scenes.
And those are some of the things I would have liked to see in the movie without changing too much.
Now! As a bonus here are some things that I think would have been a good idea, but would totally change the entire thing!
Have the film focus on how Thor closed off his heart because everyone who loves him dies. He doesn't let anyone get too close to him, something that's very apparent when he's with the Guardians. Once he has a re-encounter with Jane she helps him open up again, echoing her words at the end of the film. "Keep your heart open." And so Thor gets some character development!
And thanks for reading! Let me know what you think!

If thor is a golden retriever. Hes basically an old sick dog now that needs to be put down out of mercy. Is marvel even human?
He could be salvaged, and if Chris is giving interviews saying he wants to try again but only if they take Thor a different route... who knows. But the next time we see him again I suppose it will be an Avengers movie where he will have a small role - and the worst part of this (and I do not want to scare off any Thor fan by saying this but....) is the writer for the next Avengers movie is Waldron.
He has already ruined Loki, can you imagine what Waldron could do to Thor? 😱😱😱
Maybe you're right and Thor should just die off-screen or something, that way we can go back to when he was the best version he has ever been... TDW!

I may just have a very evident bias but I think the way Thor and the Guardians parted ways in Love and Thunder really REEKED of the "no one in marvel movies can actually be friends with each other" thing

That scene between Jane and Valkyrie in the door way means SO MUCH TO ME. Especially after seeing an interview where Tessa talks about how sisterhood is so important to Valkyrie (after losing everyone). I don’t know how to properly put it into words but my heart is warm and full!!!
YES YES
had me smiling in the theater and shit🥹
