I have had a headcanon about why Five founded the Commission rattling around in my head since like three days after I watched season 3 and I just sort of integrated it into my thoughts on the show and I was just reminded that ACTUALLY IT'S NOT "COMMON KNOWLEDGE" IT'S NOT CANON IT'S A PERSONAL HEADCANON so here it is

The Five who founded the Commission is not Five. As in, he has had roughly the same life as the Five we know from the show, but they are not the same person, because Old Five did it with the crucial difference of doing it without the Commission. The Commission wasn't a factor in this Five's life, because as we have seen, Time does not work like that. Closed loops that paradoxically set themselves off don't exist. Five travelling back in time was always going to result in him changing what had (from his perspective) already happened, not causing it to happen. So from the opposite perspective, a Five that founded the Commission could not, under any circumstance, have previously encountered the Commission. Because on Five's personal timeline, it didn't exist yet.

(Getting excited about the fact that I now know why the Commission has a Fixed Timeline of its own like Five does — because a Five is there)

So what does this mean?

I think it's safe to assume that the Five who wasn't picked up by the Commission was unsuccessful, the first time around, in preventing the Apocalypse. Apart from the whole issue of him simply Not Knowing Enough, if he'd initially succeeded and gotten his family back, he would have had no reason to ever time travel again, let alone create a time travel organisation to "protect the flow of time", and especially not one that had goals that conflicted with his family's continued living.

So he jumped back to redo — and made the same mistake as before. He went too far back.

Now, do I think he went back to the 1960s, Dallas specifically? No. I think Young Five's jump in the show was affected by the JFK assassination having been the last place he was before he jumped to 2019, and expecting the exact same outcome with different variables is not smart.

BUT. He did take them back to before they were born, AND somehow prevent them from being born in the first place. Whether that's by (roughly) the same series of events in the show (highly improbable) or by talking to Reginald and impressing upon him that it was his fault they ended the world, and to please leave them alone, thereby inadvertently causing Reginald to decide not to release the glowing orbs after all (slightly more likely, but this theory also required some of the miracle babies to exist), or something else, he gets hus siblings back to the changed 2019 to find that he's created a (not yet named) Kugelblitz.

And then Reggie uses the miracle babies to create his perfect universe — and this is the sticking point — killing Five's siblings in the process.

Here we have Five, in a new universe where none of his family exist because their lives were literally used to save the world, without even his powers, and he immediately invents time travel and creates the Commission, an organisation with the end goal of recreating the exact timeline he came from, and by proxy, his family. Only everyone else he brings into it is just fed the "preservation of the timeline" line, because what he's doing is Selfish with a capital S. But also, I might argue, in character. Five taking "do anything to save his family" to the level of "create an organisation of time assassins to recreate his family" is very on-brand.

And when he encounters a younger version of himself — could be 13, could be 63 — he can only tell him "don't save the world", because if he hadn't tried to do that — if he'd just died in the first apocalypse — he might have at least gotten to see his siblings again in the afterlife. Now he can't.

i know its more of the show being bad at continuity regarding their injuries between seasons but for fun, consider all of the hargreeves just having a slight healing factor (with luther having a stronger one than the rest of them because enhanced durability also comes with his power set)

like harlan practically confirmed that there's something different about the miracle 43 (or 16 in the s3 timeline's case) that allows their bodies to host their abilities without much issue so its not that much of a stretch to think that maybe theres added benefits to that outside of just being able to control their powers, such as a slight healing factor.

the umbrella academy was now replaced by some bunch of "low-keys". it's what you called for them.

learning their abilities one by one. with all honesty, they're no better than the original group but what stands out most is their combat skills.

ben is being ben. nothing really change with him except his bratty attitude.

while marcus are in the middle of shooing you all, jayme use her powers on diego. spitting a venom that causes the victim to have hallucinations.

you decided to entertain yourself, mind walking on diego's mind.

dear... it was a mess. you never expected diego, thinking of having a dance battle against the sparrows.

concerning but it's entertaining.

you see jayme dancing with five with a ridiculous position.

teasing five later by flicking him off the ground as your illusion self using telekinesis on him to help him up, grabbing his hand and twirl him around.

you stopped as your left arm put behind his back under his arm with the free arm is held up high while your bodies leans down. "now you'll be dancing with me."

it's nice to see diego taking their relationship seriously. it take them a while to accept the fact that you and five are married.

you put it a stop, getting rid the effects off. the illusion takes too long for your liking. jayme was aware of this.

you showed potential on diego's dreamland plus you purified the illusion with ease. your powers are too good to be true.

but she made a mistake. instead of being alert with you, she ignore those red flags.

she spat a venom on five, giving him illusion of your pretty form approaching him. you suddenly appeared behind her and give her much worse, manipulating her consciousness.

what makes you a psychopath is you have fun controlling people's minds, much to jayme's dismay.

in her point of view, you're everywhere. your whispers are all over the place that she didn't even noticed she's on the edge of the stairs.

you kicked her off, causing her to roll down off the stairs. no one should underestimate the power of mental manipulation.

as usual, five is still making out on air. you know who is on the illusion of his. your face morphed to a tomato, swiftly dismissing the effects out of him.

five realizing he's hallucinating, he quickly regain his posture. "five come on. we have to get going."

the moment he saw your red ears, he knew he messed up.

The Hargreeves & Healing Factors

I HC that all of the marigold children have a super-human healing factor, but they don’t all work the same way.

Luther: Luther seems to have a regular super healing factor (considering he seemed awful concussed in 3.01 but was fine in the next episode), and a bonus toughness/invincibility ability that he has to willingly activate, based on the “My Way” sequence in 2.01.

Diego: Diego and Five are the two that seem to have the fastest/best healing factor, based on how quickly Diego healed from being shanked and having his fingers cut off.

Allison: I think Allison has the slowest healing factor of the Hargreeves. It took a year for her voice to completely heal. She probably does still have some super-healing abilities given that she survived the injury in the first place, and her voice is completely back to normal, but I’m not a doctor.

Klaus: Klaus has an ultra-fast healing factor, but it only works after he dies. If he just gets a regular, non-fatal injury, his healing is equal to that of a normal adult.

Five:  Like I mentioned before, Five seems to have one of the best healing factors in the show. We’ve all seen the posts that list all his injuries.

Ben: Ben hasn’t gotten beaten up a lot in the show thanks to being a ghost for most of it, so it’s hard to tell. In 3.10 though, he got a tentacle or two cut off, and while it hurt, he was still functioning normally up until the sigil stuff & the reset.

Viktor: Viktor’s healing factor seems to be about average for the Hargreeves, considering he had that cut on his cheek for several days. Like Ben, we don’t see him get hurt that much in the show so it’s a bit harder to tell. He did also walk off a major LSD trip like it was nothing, though.

If I had to order them from strongest to weakest healing abilities (excluding Klaus because his mechanics are so different), I would go: Five, Diego, Luther Ben, Viktor, Allison.

my overly long harcest takes,

bc by god there’s too many ships in this category and i gotta organize my thoughts on them for my own reference.

but first, as a general note for this blog, viktor is a fictional character and there are 3-4 versions of this character - comics vanya, s1 vanya, s2 vanya (different characterization imo), and viktor (this change in characterization was conceived after elliot’s coming out, so i see it as a different interpretation of the character). my favorite iteration is s1 vanya, so while i fully respect elliot page and am extremely happy about his coming out, i’ll mostly be referring to this character as s1′s vanya. i won’t tolerate any transphobia on this post or on my blog.

also important, my score out of 10 is how much i like the ship, not an objective ranking!

luther/diego (luego) - i buy it. i totally fucking buy it. i feel like they had a bunch of sexual tension in the (superior) s1 with all that rivalry and angst between them. could 100% imagine that boiling over + them having insane sex (i think diego would enjoy luther’s ability to pick him up and push him around like. so much. extremely soft gentle dom luther/bratty sub diego. like cmon.), but could also imagine their character arcs/personalities/individual strengths really complimenting each other in a romantic storyline. 8/10.

luther/allison (alluther) - generally sweet through s1 and s2, and i very much admire tua’s guts in canonically doing this ship. sorta... assassinated by s3, in a way that felt very reactionary to mainstream fandom culture’s opinion on the ship, so... that wasn’t bodacious. but aside from that, if i’m just looking at the first two seasons, i’m not super into alluther - i like my ships to have more heat and drama, and there’s just not a lot of that with them for me. a valid and cute ship, just not my thing. 5/10. 

luther/klaus - agh i wish i liked this one more. wild child x by the book golden child? very fun, conceptually. i don’t feel romantic chemistry from their actors and i don’t find a romance between these guys super interesting to think about. 2/10.

luther/five - tbh i’d never really thought about them together, but it’s kinda growing on me as i make this list? world-weary bitter motherfucker five x moody but earnestly sweet manchild luther... luther could help five learn to like... enjoy things. five could help luther build a healthy self-esteem. they’re both emotionally-stunted as hell, but i think they’d make each other better, as they each have a lot to learn from the other. their banter delights me. also, i hc adult Five as just. being short for no reason other than bc god hates him, and considering the old man Five actor’s height, i think it’s actually just canon. and i love me a height difference! 8/10.

luther/ben - hmm. ok two routes for this one. luther/og ben or luther/sparrow ben. luther/ og ben is like. 1/10 for me, not super interesting, namely because we never see them interact, and luther doesn’t talk a bunch about ben in s1 + 2. but luther/sparrow ben? better! not my cup of tea, but i don’t hate it. 4/10. maybe a 3/10 as the final score for both versions as a whole.

luther/vanya (lunya) - i’m kinda here for it. you already know... the height difference. i’m incapable of shutting up about that trope ever. and they have perhaps the most in common out of all the hargreeves (isolation trauma, self esteem issues, big tempers they keep carefully hidden, a passion for music, treated very Distinctly by reg). i love thinking of young luther being just a little too soft for and protective of young vanya, and i love the idea of them having these little bonding moments that snowball into something more. also they have Angst and Tragedy and that’s yummy food to me. 8/10.

diego/allison - while i can feel some tension in their s1 fighting and s3 night out, i’m not compelled by this one. maybe i just like them with other characters too much to get too into it? i get why people would be into it, but i’m not. 2/10.

diego/klaus (kliego) - absolute banger ship that i 1000% see all over canon. unbelievable chemistry and a perfect dynamic. they just. work well together. opposites attract, and these opposites visibly love each other so much. i think this ship’s crazy popularity when she show first dropped makes me feel like when a really good song has been overplayed, so i don’t consider myself a kliego superfan. i am nevertheless... a fan. 7/10.

diego/five (fiego) - ughhh i understand this one so much but i cannot get into it. like it’s genuinely bizarre how much i can’t get into it. this is literally such a high-quality ship that should fit my type to a tee, but... i just don’t get hyped about it. 5/10.

diego/ben (biego) - i don’t feel it. i know they really loved each other and i know the hug between them in s2 was adorable, but i don’t know that they’d play off each other in ways that i find interesting. diego/sparrow ben doesn’t do it for me either, their interactions don’t captivate me like luther and sparrow ben’s do. 2/10.

diego/vanya (viego) - i like it more than the other ships i’m not into, but i’m still not really into this one. the scene where they talk about grace in s1 gives me a little bit of a vibe, and i know they’re a thing in the comics, but i am lukewarm. better than cold, but still lukewarm. it could grow on me if i read some very good fic? 4/10.

allison/klaus - can’t get into them as anything but best friends, i just can’t. they’re both very pretty, and the best friends thing is likely part of the appeal for their fans, but i don’t feel it myself. 1/10.

allison/five - OHHH i love this one. holy fuck do i love it. snobby mean psuedosiblings that have a thing about power and control and appearing perfect. it’s possible that allison’s the only one five could see as an intellectual equal in his family. i think five thinks klaus and vanya and ben are smart, but i think allison is who he’d pick as a 4d chess opponent. i can see sooo much potential for a fascinating and complex relationship in a world where these two are super into each other. a criminally underrated ship. 9/10.

allison/ben - i think i like it? not sure why, seeing as they hardly interact, but allison seemed quite torn up about ben’s death, and just based on their personalities/experiences/damage, i think they’d have a super interesting and fun dynamic had ben not died. imagine their banter....... excellent stuff. 7/10.

allison/vanya - another lukewarm one. i don’t not like it, it’s just not for me. i absolutely find their dynamic in s1 interesting, but not in a romantic way. i did feel some chemistry w allison/viktor in s3, but nothing to write home about given the way the show has such a hard time acknowledging their anger at each other post s1. 3/10.

klaus/five (klive) - i see it - i see klaus flirting with five a lot, i see five having a massive soft spot for klaus for no reason other than that he loves him extra, but i can’t get deep into it beyond generally thinking it’s fun. 6/10.

klaus/ben (horrance) - i like this one so much. i think it was my first harcest ship? just... their codependency. their banter. their anger at each other. grief giving way to a sad bitterness. their devotion to each other - ben wants klaus to fucking live, klaus wishes ben weren’t fucking dead. insane. makes me insane to think about. also the way ben lounges on the motel room bed in this needlessly suggestive way and winks at klaus? yeah that wink was what sold me. oh god, also i guess they hooked up in s3? poggers. 8/10.

klaus/vanya - yknow what? i like it. very underexplored. lots of potential for angst and fluff and mutual destruction as well as mutual growth. love thinking about klaus intentionally making vanya flustered by saying klaus shit, love the idea of vanya surprising klaus by turning it back on him someday. the way klaus remembers vanya crying about them stepping on ants as a kids does something to me, man. 7/10.

five/ben - i’ve read one or two really good fic about them, and seen some very sweet fanart, but i’m just not super invested in them together. 1/10.

five/vanya (fiveya) - utterly sensational. angst, tragedy, pining, childhood crushes, banter, devotion, hope. like... agh. they just have Something, in every scene they’re together - she’s the end of the world, he’s the accidental harbinger, but they could save each other. also it’s just... so fucking fun that proud, no-nonsense five chose shy and sensitive vanya as a best friend. that they chose each other. they see things in each other that no one else does. 10/10.

ben/vanya - i think i kinda like the idea of them in an au - maybe one where vanya can see the dead? she thinks she doesn’t have powers, just hallucinations of her dead brother. they’re both bitter and lonely, but just want to be loved, and are capable of great kindness. god it would be amazing actually, i’m really talking myself into liking them together lmao. 7/10.

to be honest ive never really had headcanons for characters pre-viktor or im too autistic about tua rn to remember them rn but i headcanoned him as trans like a month before elliot page came out which is funny and then currently headcanon him as having autism and bpd #slay. also with him starting to smoke cause of sissy in s2 i feel like with his poor coping mechanisms he would definitely continue to smoke and was going through packs offscreen in s3

More tua s3 thought splurging, Viktor and Five themed

I wanted a lot more Viktor and Five teamup ngl I didn't realise I had high hopes before they were crushed 😭 I loved that Five trusted Viktor at the end and they kinda worked together with their little checkmate and all but I wish we'd had more bc they're both v intelligent planners and they would make such a badass team besides the fact that I am forcibly making them besties in my head (bc based on s1 and even s2 to an extent you can't tell me that Five and Viktor weren't a dynamic duo as kids, even if only on the dl, so can we get some of that back? We were cruelly teased with a Viktor and Five teamup at the end then Five just walks away ughhh)

And yes Viktor probably should have like not made some of the decisions he made in terms of having his own little plans and just sorta doing them but also that's a Hargreeves family special I'm just happy to see him take the initiative. And it's not necessarily worse than what e.g Diego was attempting in s2.

Which brings me to: the rest of the siblings need to trust Viktor more! He would be able to contribute a lot more if they didn't see him through a lens of 'blew up the moon' or 'sweet naive brother who is easily led' all the time. Like I loved the fact that they were all protective of Viktor when they thought Harlan was manipulating or abusing him but also guys! Listen to the man! Nowadays he's usually about to make a relatively good decision (usually) and has a relatively sharp eye for detail etc and is v intelligent and overall as on it as the rest of them and it would help everyone to recognise that.

Also Five's like 'don't become a villain' WE'VE DONE THAT ARC FIVE. The moon, remember. But appreciate your concern and ngl threatening to kill him doesn't even cramp my besties hcs that much bc tbh I feel like Five would kill any of the siblings and just feel really bad about it inside afterwards. Plus he bet on Viktor winning an argument against Allison and intervened (alongside Diego bc ik Diego and Viktor's comics counterparts were friends as kids and they're my second fave sibling relationship involving Viktor on the show, tied with Viktor and Allison) when he'd deemed Allison to have gone too far so we all know he still has a soft spot for Viktor and it's just generally obvious Viktor has a soft spot for him, though maybe Allison is taking the lead in his good books bc she trusts him.

Which brings me to my other point, that Allison and Viktor and Five are the most at each other's throats bc lowkey they're the most similar in a lot of ways BUT I will not elaborate on that here bc this is long.

Would have loved to see Viktor hang out one on one with Diego bc their little moment with putting their heads together in s2 is so sweet but the 'good, you are' made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and the aforementioned standing up so.

Five making friends with Sloane and moreover hanging out with Klaus! Five and Lila enemies to frenemies! Five being like know what I'm going through it I'm having a break!

Now Five and Viktor better have like a full buddy cop thing or roommates situation or something going on in s4 if there is one bc there's so much to unpack with them as brothers, as extremely powerful individuals with extremely powerful regrets, and as individuals who in different ways have never quite related to and found their niche in the world the same way others had (ik Viktor found his place with Sissy but that was also a precarious place and he didn't really find himself until this season and then he hardly has time to settle into a new life and before that he was living in a drugged up fog, and Five has never had real stability so they work out a home and launching pad and their petty passions and moral and philosophical grappling together okay!! At least until the next big event comes along.
