DEADSTOCK Generally, it’s not my style to bang the sustainability drum, and probably to my detriment. However, when it comes to deadstock fabrics, I feel it is appropriate. All of our selvedge denim fabrics are deadstock from world-class mills. What am I talking about? ‘Deadstock’ refers to excess material that doesn’t make it into production by fashion brands. Why is deadstock fabric considered sustainable? It’s because the fabric is given a new life, a new opportunity to be put to use, avoiding the landfill. Deadstock by no means implies lower quality. The fabrics I purchase are made to a very high standard and generally made using organic cotton, the same as most high-end selvedge denim. Deadstock is not the same as factory seconds - materials produced with flaws or substandard quality. Purchasing deadstock also has some advantages for me while I explore a new market. Buying selvedge denim this way grants me access to high-quality materials without meeting large order minimums required by large-scale manufacturers. CLOSE UP This navy coat has a softer shoulder and more Italian-styled sleeve head. However, I would not go so far to call this a neopoliton shoulder, as it doesn't have the little bits of puckering at the top of the sleeve. My personal preference for shoulder and sleeve head remains in the English tradition with a roped shoulder, although mine is not usually as exaggerated as some. Recently I've had multiple client's ask for a softer shoulder and Italian styled sleeve head. I'm wondering if it's because it is more familiar as it is what dominates the ready-to-wear market. I'm curious to know what you all prefer?
