You can help your kids develop those skills by adopting healthy, lifelong habits. _______ Focus on fun. Help your child find activities he enjoys doing. When exercise is boring or feels like a chore, children are like adults. They’ll find reasons to avoid it.Limit screen time. Time on screens—watching television, playing video games, or surfing the web gobbles up kids free time, leaving little or nothing left over for more physical activities.Make fitness a personal priority. Display a positive attitude that being active is fun and feels good. Parents who are good role models for active lifestyles are a lot more likely to have children who enjoy physical activity.Minimize sedentary commuting time. Look for schools and extracurricular activities your child can walk to, or that don’t require a long commute by car or bus.Go outside. From birth on, do your best to make sure your child gets some outdoor time every day, no matter the weather or your schedule. Get active as a family. Look for physically active things you can do together. Squats have made me more mentally tough and more resistant to injury. Given all of those benefits, you may be wondering, “How can I squat more? What My Squat Workouts Looked Like _______ My squat program was as simple as it gets. I just did a basic progressive overload. In other words, I squatted based on how I felt that day and each week I tried to do a little more than I had the week before. No fancy periodization scheme, no crazy Bulgarian squat protocol, no 20–rep squat program. In the past, I used to be so focused on hitting my goals in a program. I was obsessed with following a detailed program or some complicated rep scheme that was never designed with my body in mind. This time, I just told myself, Do a little bit more today than you did last time. Here's the deal: you'll never get stronger if you don't place a larger stimulus on your body (more reps or more sets or more weight), but it's useless to pressure yourself to perform like that every workout. Why Aren't We Motivated to Exercise? There are lots of reasons we may not be as motivated to exercise as we used to be. Some of these things are actually barriers or obstacles we have to overcome, such as: Sedentary jobs and lifestyles: Most of us spend much of our day on the computer and in the car, meaning less walking and more sitting. The more we sit, the more we get used to sitting, and the harder it is to get the body moving.Being overweight: If you're overweight, it's so much harder to exercise. You might have physical issues like joint pain or injuries and it's hard to move a larger body, making exercise more intimidating and uncomfortable.Busy lifestyles: We are busier than ever and that becomes a great excuse to skip exercise. Stress: While exercise is supposed to reduce stress, exercise is also a kind of stress on the body.
