What I love about Detroit: Become Human is that everything is tied together and that there are consequences to all sorts of player choices, no matter how minor those choices may be
If Connor saves the police man on the roof in the first chapter, he later reappears in "Public Enemy." But if Connor dies at least once before this chapter, he doesn't recognize the police man anymore when he tries to talk to him
I find that very interesting because it actually shows that data is lost during the memory transfer (just like Amanda mentions) and while this doesn't contribute to the overall plot, it serves as a great reminder that even small "failures" can have consequences in later chapters. Basically, it can be seen as a warning
It also begs the question of how much Connor would actually forget if he dies as many times as possible in the game and how much it'd impact his ability to continue solving the case
Would it only be very minor things, like Hank liking jazz music, or would he potentially forget major events that are important to the investigation?
And if he goes deviant after dying a few times, how would he cope with the memory loss from an emotional perspective?

It's been a while since I've last posted anything on here, but now I'm back and planning to post again every now and then!
I've been thinking about character dynamics lately and I really like the idea of having a character who's already dated a few people be the protagonist/love interest
Seeing someone struggle with being in love for the first time is a great way to create character drama, but I also like the idea of a character being rather burned out by past relationships or finding it difficult to open up to a new person after feeling a specific way about someone else for a prolonged period of time
It gets especially interesting when said character has had multiple relationships in the past and slowly learns to understand that, just like every person is different, every relationship is different as well
This can give a great insight into how boundaries differ from person to person and how difficult it can be to adjust to them when you're used to someone else's boundaries
I really like the "you're nothing like the other people I dated so far" trope a lot as well because adapting to a new person can already create a lot of challenges, and resolving the situation as a team is very heartwarming to me
All in all, I think there's a lot of character drama and a good relationship you can build with this setup! :D

To everyone who likes sad books that delicately handle topics surrounding the queer community as well as mental health issues, I recommend "History Is All You Left Me" by Adam Silvera (and all of his other books as well really, since his writing style is just,,,,, *chef's kiss*)
History Is All You Left Me deals with Griffin, a teenager living in New York who recently lost his best friend/ex-boyfriend Theo. The book covers Griffin's grieving process which features getting to know Theo's current boyfriend Jackson, as well as all important events that were in one way or another relevant for Griffin's and Theo's relationship.
It is important to note that Griffin has OCD, which is something that is (as far as I've seen it) very rarely discussed in media, especially Griffin's specific type of OCD. Before I read the book, I've never seen anyone with this type of OCD in media, so it was very alleviating to see someone struggle with a similar experience to my own (since most representation of OCD is contamination OCD (again, this is limited to what I have seen in media), which is also mentioned in the book when Griffin tells Theo that he thinks he might have OCD and Theo responds with: "You can't have OCD, your room is a mess").
What makes this book so special is that it feels incredibly realistic. It captures the pain Griffin goes through, especially when it jumps from a happy moment in the past back to the present, it feels like a punch in the face because he reflects so much on how he feels about Theo.
It's a great read and it left me in shambles.

It's really sad to see that, no matter the outcome of your Detroit: Become Human playthrough, all important characters will, at least to some degree, be traumatized. Except for one.
Even if Markus succeeds with his revolution (either peaceful or violent), he will always see some of his people die in 'Freedom March', no matter if you select 'Run', 'Stand your ground', or 'Charge'. Either Carl dies or Leo will be injured, but either way, he will always bear the burden of it being his fault. He will always have to kill people or watch his friends get hurt (e.g. Simon in the Stratford Tower) and none of the player's choices is capable of preventing that.
The same goes for Kara. Even if you choose not to move at all in 'Stormy Night', the shock she would experience during her last moments would still shape her perception of the world, even if it didn't last long. Alice will never experience a childhood that is entirely free of abuse and neglect, and Kara will always carry the burden of how it felt to be on the run all the time, possibly even ending up in one of the recall centers.
Machine Connor can, at least partly, avoid this. There are a few events like finding Simon and reading his memory in 'Public Enemy' that can traumatize him but there are many ways to avoid this and other scenarios to happen where he ends up feeling emotions.
It's kind of sad to see that the only way for Connor to achieve his "good endings" is by feeling terrible about himself and blaming himself for the things he's done, which is also something that Markus can relate to, while Kara is, with a few exceptions, completely innocent.

the toughest part about writing isn't getting words on the page. the toughest part about writing is ignoring the voice in my head that says,
"hey man— sorry to interrupt, but that last sentence? it could use a few more emdashes. maybe just— and i know this seems nuts— ten or fifteen?? thanks— great stuff btw."

Detroit: Become Human - chapter analysis "The Hostage"
Since I liked the first chapter of DBH a lot and thought it was a great opening chapter, I want to go a little in-depth about things the player learns throughout the chapter and what makes it so good in my opinion
The game starts with Connor doing a coin trick in the elevator while the date and time are given. This lets the player know that the game is set in the future and that in this future, androids are capable of incredible precision. Once he arrives at his destination, he readjusts his tie which highlights his role as the negotiator
The first things Connor can do are looking at a portrait and saving a fish - or leaving it to die, depending on player choice. Saving it increases the software instability, though the player doesn't know what that is yet, and it is one of the first things Connor can do that isn't part of his mission. He is then interrupted by a woman, depicted on the portrait and therefore assumed to be the mother of the hostage, asking him to save her daughter, until she notices that he himself is an android as well. She then pleads that the police send a human negotiator instead of an android to take care of the matter. Despite not knowing what's going on, the player is given the information through this interaction that an android has been involved and that it has had terrible consequences for the family that seemingly lives in the apartment
While at the crime scene, the player is barely given any spoken clues about what is happening: The police members and the SWAT team are uncooperative and are so tense that all the information Connor receives is through searching the rooms for clues and slowly piecing together what exactly happened before the deviant took the little girl hostage and why he is threatening to jump off the building's roof with her. Through all of this, the reconstruction feature is introduced and the time sensitivity shows the player that you cannot waste a lot of time in Connor's chapters
The level design is very smart because there are some clues in almost every room. This compartment style gives the player great insight into what Connor's story is about: It tells the player that Connor is great at deducing what happened based on evidence, it shows that he is capable of solving puzzles and that he understands circumstances in a quick manner, and that he is able to stay calm in stressful situations, unlike the deviant he has to deal with
The probability of success is a key feature in this chapter which helps the player understand how much they still need to find and what actions can help to succeed in their mission
The actual negotiation with Daniel highlights that it is either crucial to take a violent approach by shooting Daniel, or that it's necessary to take a more pacifistic approach through building trust. This is incredibly important for the player to know in future chapters since you are often given the choice to either play Red Connor (doing anything for the mission) or Blue Connor (making decisions that are regarded as humane)
This chapter has six endings which shows the tremendous amount of possibilities in the game and how many consequences your choices can have, both in exploration and dialogue
It is possible to succeed without further consequences for Connor, it's possible to succeed but to get Connor killed (though he comes back so there's no real consequence here aside from shocking the player that a character died right in the first chapter), and it's possible to fail the mission completely
The tense and dramatic atmosphere is something the player can immerse themselves in while being introduced to various of Connor's features which makes this chapter very fun and informative for the ones who play it. The soundtrack only adds to this intense feeling. But the most important part of what this chapter is trying to say is rather obvious: "Be careful what you do, your choices can have fatal consequences"

It would be very lovely to see Luther and Kara bond over something that isn't their affection for Alice. Sure, that's how their relationship started, but I'd like to see more than just that, Kara is very important to Luther and there should be more that ties them together
Luther probably struggles with social interactions a lot, given that his memory was erased by Zlatko and that his model doesn't have an elaborate social program, so I like to imagine that Kara helps him talk to others and form connections of his own given how incredibly empathetic she is
And because of his erased memory, it'd be nice for them to go on little trips together to make new memories he can look back on with a smile on his face
Additionally, moving in together after staying at Rose's brother's place could be a great opportunity for them to learn about what they'd like to do with their lives in the future
This works really well both as a platonic dynamic or as a romance setup since Luther clearly sees Alice and Kara as family, so it wouldn't surprise me if he and Kara ended up as a couple
Though it's very likely that Luther would be confused about this feeling at first since it's very different to the affection he feels for Alice and that he wouldn't be sure about how to deal with it, while Kara seems like someone who would be very upfront about her feelings
It'd be great to have them explore new things together, help each other and grow with each other, I'd love to see them grow fond of each other without having to be scared that they'll be separated or that something might happen to Alice

I may be a bit late to the party but I finally started playing Life Is Strange: True Colors. I finished the first chapter yesterday so I'll give a quick rundown on things and characters I liked as well as my thoughts on the story's setup.
!!!My knowledge about the game is limited to chapter 1-3, but I will compare some of it to the other games of the series, so there will be very minor spoilers for Life Is Strange 1, Life Is Strange: Before The Storm, and Life Is Strange 2!!!
So here's a list of things I really liked about the first chapter!
Consistent setting (which is something I didn't like about LiS 2. The Life Is Strange series' biggest strong suit is, in my opinion, its characters and the consistent change of setting and characters made it incredibly difficult for many people to really get attached to the characters)
Great introduction to Alex through interview with Dr. Lynn (teaser for her powers without revealing too much)
Well-written dialogue, the characters feel very distinct and natural
Gabe. Best big brother out there fr
The graphics and animation are amazing! In the other games, facial expressions could often seem stiff and at times even unexpressive, but True Colors captured emotions incredibly well and the art style in itself is a big improvement, the environment looks absolutely astounding
The water is so beautiful
Alex' journal is very distinct from the ones we've seen in other LiS games since instead of doodles, she has a very unique way of expressing herself through quotes and songs
The memory collection feature is a great way for collectors to learn a lot more about Haven Springs and its characters
While I felt like Sean was very stiff and more of a self-insert for the player, Alex had very unique struggles with her past and how introverted she is
The love interests are amazing. While Warren was incredibly questionable in many ways and while Rachel wasn't the best either given that she's cheated on Chloe multiple times, Ryan and Steph are nothing but delightful from what I've seen
Speaking of which: Steph is really cool, I like how flirty and outgoing she is, she just seems like someone who's fun to be around
Also speaking of which: I love Ryan so much. He's a bit nerdy, I love his sense of humor, he's attractive, he's calm and attentive, he's got a beautiful voice, he's a bit of a smartass, it makes me happy every time he's on-screen
I love the way Ryan handled the situation when he noticed that Alex was getting nervous because of Steph's anger. He saw what was happening, quickly found a solution and made sure that Alex was okay. This is something I wish more people would do when they see someone get anxious instead of questioning their anxiety or getting upset because of it
Unlike Daniel who was at times extremely annoying (at least in my opinion, I understand that children are just like that sometimes and that's okay), I grew incredibly attached to Ethan right away
I love the side characters!! They feel so authentic and it's nice to be around them, listen to them, help them with their individual struggles
The Thaynor puzzle was very fun to solve (but I think most True Colors puzzles are fun, for example the jukebox puzzle)
I like that the story is heading into the direction of "I have a power with many downsides but I can also use it to help people around me"
On that note, Alex' power is very cool and I like that it's something she's had trouble with way before the plot started
I was genuinely sad when Gabe died, it hit me like a truck because I really liked him despite the short time Alex spent with him
True Colors doesn't try to tackle a million societal issues at once and instead focuses on a few to make the plot feel consistent and realistic
The arcade games are so much fun, I'm so glad that they put little mini games like these into the game
Those are my thoughts on chapter 1 for now, I think I'll add more about the other chapters some other time!!

I've been writing the first seven chapters of a DBH fanfic over the course of the past two months, so far it's just been a Hank & Connor friendship fic and I am very conflicted about whether or not I should turn it into a Hankcon fic
On one hand, the setup I have so far could very much work as a good build-up for a romance plot: They're housemates, they deeply trust each other, they take care of each other, they each have their own struggles to overcome, so technically, it would very much work
On the other hand, I really like platonic dynamics and not everything has to be romantic just because two people get along well
So I've just kind of been stuck on this ever since I've started writing the fic and I'm constantly torn between whether or not I should leave it the way it is or if I should turn it into a Hankcon fic lol

DBH headcanons (post-best ending)
Connor really, really hates it when Hank makes self-depricating jokes or says that no one would miss him if he was gone because Hank helped him through so many hardships and hearing him say all of these things make him both sad and angry, yet he doesn't know what to do about it since he wasn't programmed to deal with a situation like this one
Once they're in Canada, Alice enrolls into a primary school but struggles to make friends at first. Luther supports her and tries to give her advice, her past with Todd has made her very vulnerable which is why she often acts shy and doesn't display a lot of confidence
Markus pays regular visits to Carl and shows him his paintings. Carl is always very proud of him and appreciates his visits a lot, though he tries to hide that he is gradually getting sicker so that Markus doesn't worry about him too much
Connor loves cooking and baking because recipes give him direct instructions of what he needs to do while also being able to change things up and give the meals a bit of personal flavor (but he struggles to know whether or not something tastes good since he doesn't have any sense of taste, so he often consults Hank and ask him to taste-test)
Hank is incredibly stubborn about not wanting a therapist even though he desperately needs one
After moving in together, Hank is suspiciously often on-schedule at work - mostly because Connor annoys him out of bed every morning, since Connor can set timers and alarms
Sumo grows incredibly attached to Connor. He's always happy when he comes back home, he loves when he takes him on walks, they often cuddle on the couch, and as a result, Connor's clothes are often covered in dog hair

me, after clearing my schedule to write:
uhhhh it was raining... and dark (and also night) and uhh... COLD, and then something dramatic~ happened
me, stuck in traffic on my way to work:
Rain tumbled through midnight leaves, casting the forest in liquid moonlight. A low growl shook the horizon. Death had come.

I really like fantasy AU's that explore the idea of two different species getting to know each other's culture. For starters, you can work with a human and a non-human creature with human-like characteristics (vampires, werewolves, etc.) because they're very likely to have traits that can also be found in human culture, and some that are exclusive to their culture.
With this trope, you can choose whether the non-human creature(s) live among humans (or the other way around), or if they don't know much about each other, whether they stay hidden or avoid each other. Sometimes you can work with the star-crossed lovers trope by making one of the two species the hunter and the other one the prey, though this can be very cliché, so it's difficult to pull off.
What can work really well in my opinion is having two creatures meet that live in very different terrains and would normally never come across each other, in turn having them know next to nothing about one another, for example merfolk and creatures of the forest, or a species that lives in the desert and a species that tends to live in caves.
It can also work to create an entirely new species that didn't exist before. With this trope, exploring their ways of living, their differences and similarities, can be very important for the story and dynamic of different characters.
For one culture for example, kissing can be something perfectly normal but for another, the very concept can seem odd and even disturbing.
Of course this is a great set-up for a romance plot, but it also works really well as a simple friendship dynamic. It can also be a great way of introducing the found family trope (regardless of our differences, we live together and love each other").
Something I personally love to see is a group of different species as a hero protagonist group. You can either focus on their adventure and add a bit of exploration of their differences here and there, or you can make it a big part of the plot that they need to stick together and overcome their differences. This can be done by having two creatures be part of the group that are natural enemies (though this can also be very difficult to pull off).
Instead of using a fantasy setting, this can also be set up in a futuristic setting with androids and/or robots. A good example for this is "I, Robot" (the next thing I'll explain is not really a spoiler imo): In one scene, Spooner winks at someone, and Sonny (the robot) asks him what it means. Spooner explains to him that winking at someone means that they can trust you, and Sonny uses this information later on.
Another example is Connor in Detroit: Become Human. When Hank asks sarcastically: "Do you know where you can stick your instructions?", Connor is confused by his statement and responds: "No. Where?" due to him not fully understanding humor and sarcasm.
Though you could argue that androids/robots are the "easy way out" because they don't have a culture of their own, unless you set them up to have one in some way, like in Matrix.
All in all, it can be a great set-up with a lot of room for your own imagination and I believe it's fun to come up with those kinds of traits
