Star Wars RPG The Dawn of the Rangers

S01E14 "Bearers of Bad Tidings"

Location: Coruscant orbit

Aboard the Breon Dayvan named Elegant Format, Captain-Supervisor Zor Draco, bounty hunter Gev Dyson, technician Pev Tekko, old Olem & Fred the L-1g general purpose droid faces off a flotilla of Escort Frigates headed by the Priam.

They persuade - with Zor's diplomatic skills - the Priam's Mon Calamari Commander Sebelek of their need to reach Colonel Tyria Sarkin to report critical information to her. After confirming via comms, Sebelek allows them to pass and the frigates return to their orbital patrol duty.

Meanwhile, a Lambda shuttle Tourmaline approaches and hails them. Ranger Agent Liyar Gopor, a Klatooinian, greets them. He requests that they tell him the information, but they will only reveal the info to Colonel Sarkin. Gopor then tells them he will escort them to a classified Ranger HQ on the Coruscant surface.

Following them down, the Rangers believe something is wrong. Olem tries to reach out with the Force. But he is unable to sense anything out of the ordinary. But for certain they are being jammed. The Tourmaline takes them through one of the Industrial Districts as the sun begins to set. Then, the shuttle enters a hangar bay on the side of a rusty factory. Zor follows suit, but feels suspicious.

Fred provides them with a portable comms gear that needs to be modified. Pev quickly repairs the gear's circuitry, after which it is able to detect the jamming frequency. Then Zor - aided by Fred - uses the gear to break through the jamming.

Agent Gopor requests via comlink that they all exit the Dayvan. Gev is first to exit with his riot gun prepared, then Pev, followed by Zor after he orders Fred to try to contact Colonel Sarkin with the comms gear. Olem pulls out his DL-18 blaster and hangs back in the Dayvan. Gopor exits his shuttle. They spot a number of modified police droids with blasters surrounding the Elegant Format.

When Gev refuses to put down his riot gun, a firefight occurs. With quick reflexes, Gev pulverises two modified police droids to their right who are about to shoot them. Pev & Zor leap back onto the Dayvan, avoiding fire. Olem readies his blaster at the Dayvan's hatch.

Then, Fred announces that he has contacted Sarkin and she is en route with a squadron of Ranger gunships.

As Pev mans the gunnery station, he spots an armed droid approaching from the rear of the Dayvan. But Gev's second volley takes out two more droids, including that one and the one beside Gopor.

From the Dayvan side hatch, Olem fires his blaster but the stun bolt misses. But then Zor trusts the Force for his attack. He closes his eyes, gives in to the universe and the Force takes over. He pulls his trigger. [Despite three '1's on the dice] Zor's bolt strikes the Klatoonian! However, the agent somehow shrugs off the stun effect almost immediately.

Seeing his droids fall one-by-one, Gopor flees out of their line of sight.

Zor & Gev jump out again to find Gopor, but one last droid at the left side of the Dayvan throws a grenade... which hits the ship undercarriage, ricochets back to him and explodes. The undercarriage also provide cover from shrapnel for the Rangers. The droid still stands, but is missing an arm, part of his torso and a section of his head.

Gopor has vanished into the abandoned industrial tower.

Then, Sarkin's gunships arrive. She jumps out of the lead gunship and greets Zor by his codename "Protocol". She thanks them for ferreting out an unknown infiltrator in their midst. Because of Gopor's ambush attempt, Sarkin is able to determine his actual ID: master spy Haanen Felean, an Imperial stooge.

As New Republic Security Force organise a manhunt for Felean, Sarkin orders the team back to the actual Ranger HQ for a debriefing. As night falls, the Rangers - aboard the Elegant Format - follows Sarkin's gunship back to the real Rangers HQ on Coruscant...

Star Wars RPG The Dawn of the Rangers

S01E13 "Day Trip in the Day Van"

Location: Jar'kai City, Kitel Phard, the Atrisian Commonwealth.

With Chief Vitruan's Constabulary storming Tarn Draco's office building, the Rangers decide to go back up the stairwell as it was locked down by security earlier. They climb up to the roof landing pad where Tarn's Breon Dayvan is parked. They hear a door explode at the ground floor. Officers were running up after them.

But three officers, led by Officer Tizosar are waiting for them on the roof.

Zor Draco, Pev Tekko and Olem dive for cover, but Gev Dyson unleashes his riot gun stunning one enemy. They others combine fire on him, but Gev's second volley fells another and dazes Tizosar. Then Pev's stun bolt drops him. While they all jump into the Dayvan, Gev sets up a booby trap at the roof door with a grenade.

Zor starts the engine while Pev takes the rear cannon turret. An L1 general purpose droid named Fred activates and welcomes them aboard the Elegant Format.

Gev hops aboard. Zor takes off. The cops breakthrough the door, but the booby trap does not go off. Gev laments the waste of his favourite grenade. As they climb higher, two HH-87 Starhopper fighters chase after them, telling them to land. With Pev's help, Zor barely manages to make a jump to lightspeed. They set a course for Coruscant.

En route, after Fred serves snacks, Zor decides to contact his former New Republic Ranger CO Colonel Tyria Sarkin. Meanwhile, Olem finds a flask of brandy. With Fred's help in encrypting communication, Zor uses his codename "Protocol" to make contact with Sarkin & persuade her that the Imperial-aligned Pentastar Alignment junta has infiltrated the Rangers.

She sets up a meeting at the Generis Arcology on Coruscant, but when they drop out of hyperspace, a flotilla led by Escort Frigate Priam is intercepting the Elegant Format, which has been reported stolen on Kitel Phard.

They should have changed the BoSS transponder code.

Last week, in a one-shot Star Trek Adventures tabletop RPG session, my niece Anya plays Commander Jewel Mochizuki, XO of the Walker-class USS Bangkok. It is July 2260. Captain Adilia Morales is sent by Starfleet to investigate the SOS from the Saladin-class USS Neptune in the Anansi Aleph system.

Captain Morales assigns Cmdr Mochizuki to the rescue ops. Upon dropping out of warp, Science Officer Lt Amanda Heisenberg scans nearby gas giant Anansi Aleph III detecting a ship in its upper atmosphere. Helmsman Lt. Cmdr. Simone Tsang plots a course there.

An electrical storm under the Neptune disables scanning, comms and prevents beaming. Cmdr Mochizuki orders Tsang to launch a probe. Despite the atmo disturbance, Mochizuki succeeds [using Control+Conn] in remote flying the drone. The Neptune seems fine, and there is no sign of activity.

Then, Mochizuki leads a landing party with Tsang & Heisenberg in a Type-7 shuttle. They pass the probe on its way back. The winds and ionisation disruption buffet the shuttle, but Tsang skillfully lands them in the Neptune's hangar bay, beside another Type-7 shuttle.

They disembark and are jumped by a creature out in the corridor. Mochizuki stuns the creature with her phaser. The creature is a dog-sized leathery ball of muscle with a huge maw and sharp teeth.

Heisenberg reports that there are multiple lifesigns on the Engineering Deck - but no reply on comms. Tsang informs the XO that the ship is sinking into the storm clouds below which would destroy the ship.

With 15 minutes left, they split up. Heisenberg proceeds to the Science Department to learn more about the creatures. Mochizuki orders Tsang to find and destroy the creatures while she heads for the Engineering Deck. The XO fails to break the lock on the Engineering Room, where the Neptune survivors are trapped. Another creature jumps her but is disintegrated by her phaser.

Then Heisenberg calls. She is under attack by more creature before her signal cuts off.

The Neptune rocks violently as it descends into the topmost storm clouds. Tsang reports that an organic, egg-like object smashed through the hull & hatched some time ago. The hull breach is contained by emergency forcefields for now.

Mochizuki heads toward Tsang but en route a group of four creatures rush for her. They are pursued by a large 3-m long tentacled creature! Mochizuki and the small aliens flee together. But [by spending 2 Momentum] a lightning hit activates the corridor security forcefield and traps the creature. The smaller aliens are also happy at this development.

Then Heisenberg shows up with more of the smaller creatures in her arms. She discovered that the smaller gir-ligud are not hostile. The USS Neptune picked a group of them in space as they were being hunted by the larger sarab-bok. The predator travelled in an egg-like vessel that had smashed into the starship in search of its food.

Lt Cmdr Tsang reaches the bridge but helm power is off. The XO finds a power junction and [with Reason+Engineering] successfully diverts power to the bridge, allowing the helmsman to pilot the ship up and away from the electrical storm.

The Neptune out of danger, Mochizuki beams the trapped sarab-bok out to space and rescue the near-frozen crew in the Engineering Room – some of which had been devoured by the huge alien creature.

With the survivors safe and sound, the USS Bangkok and the USS Neptune then warp away from Anansi Aleph III.
