This was originally released in high school. The process of recovering the audio took years really since I never had the masters. But, with a few hours, a dimly lit room, and a turkey sandwich later, I made magic! (Shout out to Floating Spirits for the assist, and Tiffani for the artwork!!)
What I learned is I aways been an activist in music form. The original title was “From Washington with Love” but probably should’ve been named “F Bush”. (Side: I will score a Bond film one day 😉 )
3 classmates helped me with this. Christine and Mike were on 2 songs a piece. What she did on “Sorry I Turned U On” is Grammy worthy and bloody criminal a star wasn’t made that night! Justin O recorded everything in his garage and I remember those nights vividly. Leave track practice, shower, then go record. I remember everyone was floored cause I didn’t use notes I just went in and said what I felt. A bunch of kids from the neighborhood actually pop up in the background of songs. (This is a trend. If you’re around me for any significant time you WILL end up in a song. Ain’t no lounging round me for free!)
Made it in a week after a breakup. Wrote and produced it myself after not being able to find a producer. So yes, this is the start of me Dr Dre-ing it. It’s the life of an introspective high schooler - so like Hey Arnold the teen years.
Weirdly, and this is the first time I did it, but I have ALOTTA songs referencing the Soviet Union over the years. 😂 Dunno why just thought it was interesting…
“Luv Wars” was extremely hard to restore but I did my best. It’s about Katrina and how blacks in general are treated during US emergencies so I felt it important to still include.
This is mainly for newer fans but for everyone who was involved in this, I hope it makes you proud! I hope it’s a core life memory, I hope you understand how much you’ll always mean to me!! ✌🏽 ❤️
This song dropped Valentine’s Day 2015 and expresses how I felt about love and relationships at the time. Sometimes you need something simple. Happy Leap Day!! ✌🏽 ❤️
“Lent (Vocal Version)”. Link in bio. Just beautiful. I made this song a couple days ago, it’s the only song with vocals from the upcoming “Mozart is Black 2” project. Don’t forget to peep the “Unplugged” series which is currently only on ITV. #art #soul #hiphop #mozart #r&b #classical #music #paris #london
“Graves of New Orleans” from 2014’s Bloody El! I wanted to write a tale about one of the great black American cities: New Orleans! It’s a blues inspired creole infused story about death, not really dying, after life, and hurricane Katrina. The imagery was inspired by the above ground graves. I’ll never forget the response to our own people, from our own people, and the effect that had on my young mind. Our cities matter just as much as those without a big number of minorities! One love ❤️
I sneakily remastered and rereleased 35 albums this past 4th quarter. That’s 367 songs! Made in 7 different countries. Some played on radio, one was in a movie, and all are on streaming (some are only available on bandcamp atm)! I’m in the middle of remastering an album I did in high school that I’m excited to share… 😆
This is about the high school to prison pipeline that plagues black and brown communities in America. The more we talk about it, the less this’ll happen. ✊🏽✌🏽
