when a character is written inconsistently because nobody thought about it that hard and you're like it's time for me to get in there.. and think about it that hard

I forgot how lonely it is to write original fiction.
Where are the kudos? The subscriptions? The comments? The people cheerleading me chapter to chapter? Where are the kind words and compliments and reassurances that what I'm writing isn't complete crap? Where are the unhinged emojis? The asks on Tumblr? Where are my mutuals in my dms apologizing for not reading the latest chapter right away (side note, you know you don't have to apologize at all, right??). Where is the fanart? Where are the recs?
Where is my motivation to keep going?
It's something I've been thinking about a lot, actually, lately. How the experience of writing fanfic is so unique. How you already have an audience, willing and waiting and captive. And that's really it, isn't it? You have an audience. It's almost performative, writing fanfic. It's being on a stage, a one-person show (or two, if you do it with a friend); it's getting live reactions to your performance, it's feeding off the energy of the crowd and informing it back in a feedback loop; it's improvised, sometimes, in almost-real-time. It's building something that you couldn't have built by yourself. A thing that takes on a life of its own.
It's an experience you can't get writing original fiction, and, honestly, not having it is making it hard to write something original at all.

all roads lead to...
fandom: percy jackson pairing: valdangelo words: 2.1k
Rolling down the window, Nico sticks out his arm to feel the wind brush across his skin. Inside, the music that reverberates is something not-quite electronic, not-quite alternative, but somehow a combination of those, resulting in the most grating sounds Nico’s ever heard. He frowns and turns to Leo, otherwise good mood immediately soured, and tells him, bluntly, “You have the most atrocious music taste known to man.”
“How dare you!” Leo, who had been singing along to the music, pauses just long enough to look disproportionately offended. More than he has any right to be. “This is the perfect road trip song.”

Nico kicks at the water as he approaches, feeling the smooth glide of droplets rolling off his bare feet, a waterfall cascading down his ankles. The tide comes up to kiss the shore, then recedes. He’s hardly ever been this close to the sea and finds himself oddly captivated by the way sunlight reflects blue-green off the waves. But in a way, it’s familiar. Maybe because he’s known Percy for years now, so long that the water has become a source of comfort by extension of their friendship.
It’s a weekday during school hours and, looking around, Nico doesn’t see anyone else at the beach. The emptiness makes the place feel bigger, the coastline seemingly never-ending as it wraps around the borders of the water bank and disappears somewhere beyond the horizon. With his arms spread out, Nico closes his eyes and breathes in, the air fresh and tasting of saltwater.
Summer is finally here.

enemies to friends to lovers prompts
being forced to work together for a project/mission and absolutely dreading it
separating themselves as much as possible if allowed (ex: booking different rooms, camping out in different places, stalling when they do have personal time)
“you really aren’t making this any easier.” “as if you are?”
“you put this here on purpose!” “okay, for once, i wasn’t trying to put you in any danger.”
annoying any other surrounding friends/teammates with their consistent arguing
“you left me! don’t you realize i could have died?!” “that was the plan!”
finding out they both have another “enemy” in common, so they work together to either bother/get back at them (and maybe they realize they had lots of fun)
“you didn’t have to help me…” “yeah, well, unfortunately, i did. now come on, we don’t have time for this.”
“did i just hear a ‘thank you’??” “do not get used to hearing that.”
one making a snarky insult that was just so good, the other had to laugh
“what is that? poison?” “it’s literally just lunch that i figured i should kindly share, but if you’re not hungry then…” “no, wait, i am! thanks, i guess..”
both being unable to sleep one night, bored out of their minds, and somehow spending hours talking to each other
one is injured and is hesitant of the other taking care of them
^ they then are shocked by how gentle they’re being treated
going from spending no time, to most of their time together
“i know i was just there, but i think i forgot my keys.” “if you needed an excuse to see me again, you could have just asked..”
old (insulting) nicknames still being thrown around, but now it’s kind of endearing
“we swear we saw you leave their place last night.” “that must’ve been someone else.”
“that cute little face you’re pulling didn’t scare me before and it definitely won’t now. put it away.”
hiding their relationship from other friends because they know the reaction they’ll get
“no way, you still have this?”
sometimes their differences still clash, yet they learn to work through them

everyone hate my loquacious swag. its always "why did you make this sentence so long" and "why do you use so many commas and em dashes" and never "how did you come up with that run on sentence" or "writing that run on sentence looked fun"

the one thing i want to be able to do as a writer is make people come back to something ive written. i want that piece of text to haunt them, i want their thoughts to be briefly consumed by this. i want this to be something they remember long after its time. thats the one thing i want to do

like the passage of time
fandom: haikyuu pairing: iwaoi words: 2.3k
Time seems to move fast and slow all at once. Before Hajime knows it, the countdown has begun. An eruption of noise follows, rippling down busy streets, the entire crowd of people coming to life as hundreds of voices chant along to the flashing numbers displayed in front of them: 10, 9, 8…
Hajime, Tooru, and the celebration of holidays over the span of a year.
