I always find it particularly funny when people say that Ranni is just manipulating the player and that she’s using them as a means to a much more nefarious secret end, because if you actually pay attention to the game and character then one thing becomes abundantly clear.

Ranni literally cannot lie to save her life.

No seriously, she’s a cunning mastermind but she is a fucking terrible liar. When a random tarnished comes looking for her and accuses her of the assassination of Godwyn, she just goes “yeah? And what of it?” as if she’s not admitting to being the one behind the biggest act of heresy in known history. That's not something you should just say to people, least of all a tarnished!

You get her alone with you and within seconds she’s rambling about her plan, her past, her family, her friends that she adores with all of her heart, how you’re actually a lot like them, nevermind forget that last part please-

Sorry to burst the bubble of all the nihilist theorists out there that really want age of stars to secretly be a bad ending but if Ranni was planning anything nefarious with her godhood then I’m willing to bet that she wouldn’t be able to keep quiet about it until the end of her questline.

Hi.....Do you mind if I ask you some random thing? I used to love shounen and shoujo manga equally....But ever since I found BL manga 3 years ago, my interest in shoujosei (especially het romance) decrese a lot, and what I search for is just the dynamic between mc (male) and male lead...I don't want to read mc (female) and male lead or mc (male) and female lead...And what I want to read mostly are just mlm or wlw stories....

What do you think is happening to me? Is it really weird?

I’m not a psychologist, but it sounds like you just really like queer stories. Which is perfectly good and normal! 

From your ask, it also sounds like you didn’t read much of these stories before, so now maybe you’re making up for lost time by exploring these dynamics. Plus, let’s be real: in many cultures, LGBTQ+ acceptance is a new thing, so the popularity and prevalence of these stories most likely grew fairly recently. Culture is saturated with straight love stories, so I think queer stories by comparison can be quite fresh.

Don’t pathologize yourself for liking something or having specific reading preferences. You’re not hurting anyone; you’re just reading what you like. It’s... okay, normal, and good to read what you like. :)

I really like other ships aside from just the main ones. Canon is good, fanon is good. But I can't stop feeling guilty about it. May I ask if MXTX ever made a statement on how we ship the main characters with the others sometimes?

Not exactly.

During the writing of MDZS, MXTX's author's notes mention that the romance is just Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, no third-party. But this is strictly a comment on canon.

During an interview, when asked about Xiyao, she said she did not intend them as a romantic couple, but then said people can view it as they like. So I'd say she's fine with shipping, and given that her friend and canon artist Changyang has drawn many non-canon ships like 3Zun, Nielan, etc., I don't think she's against shipping other characters at all.

If I may offer unsolicited advice: I don't think you should ever feel guilty for shipping characters, even main ones. One person's preference is different from another's, and if you like Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian with other people, you do you in your fanfiction and fanart. Don't feel guilty at all. I strongly dislike Nie/lan and Xi/Cheng, but I support their shippers' rights to ship and enjoy it.

If you wouldn't ask Lan Wangji to move on from Wei Wuxian, you shouldn't expect Lan Xichen to do so either. Lan Xichen, by the end of the novel, decides to enter seclusion for Jin Guangyao just as Lan An did for his wife. Whether or not you subscribe to the Lan only love once theory, Lan Xichen has made his choice. In the novel, you see, even months after, through the eyes of Wei Wuxian, that Lan Xichen behaves as if his soul has left him. In The Untamed behind the scenes, Lan Xichen's actor even stated that without Jin Guangyao, Lan Xichen will not return to the world. Enter the world for one person and leave when they go, leaving only dust in the wake (Wei Wuxian's observation upon seeing the Lan murals).

Lan Xichen was a gentle, compassionate being before Jin Guangyao, equal in his love and care for all living beings, heart the surface of deep calm waters. He was the ideal of Taoist goals, a person without waves and attachment. Lan Xichen, after Jin Guangyao entered his life, was a person brought alive, finally bound by the red threads of emotion and living, a statue become human.

Lan Xichen looks at no one the way he looks at Jin Guangyao, treats no one the way he treats Jin Guangyao. Just as Jin Guangyao considered Lan Xichen the impeccable, flawless moon in the sky. To Lan Xichen, Jin Guangyao was the scorching, life bringing fire of the sun. Here existed a man who was born in the mud, but rose above to stand above all men. Not only did he command the world, only in his hands was power a force for good. Jin Guangyao alone, saved the most lives in Mo Dao Zu Shi. He built a temple to Guanyin for his mother, and through it, offered food and medicine for those the cultivational world were only willing to offer their pity and unwilling to lift a finger to help. He built the watchtowers when all of the cultivational opposed it, fought day and night, endured his father's abuse so that places considered beneath other cultivators would receive timely aid. When others took power, they just wanted to elevate their own family and oppress others. Jin Guangyao took power and saved the world.

Lan Xichen loved exactly this man. The man who was covered in scars and bruises from the circumstances of his birth, who was smeared with the biased opinions of others and the crappy luck that plagued him wherever he went, who was oppressed and abused by those with power, and yet never broke, never stopped lifting his head to the heavens and standing up again to climb. The man who saved him from the moment they first met and repeatedly after. Jin Guangyao rebuilt the Cloud Recesses for Lan Xichen. Lan Xichen decided to build ties with the world for Jin Guangyao. The man who acquiesced to pressure in the treatment of the Wen, bore the scorn of the cultivational world beside Jin Guangyao to build the towers, to elect Jin Guangyao Chief Cultivator.

Lan Xichen loved him and only him. With the long life of a cultivator, and the reliable promise of human greed, that coffin will open while Lan Xichen lives, and he will be ready. Just as Lan Wangji regretted not standing beside Wei Wuxian in his first life, Lan Xichen will finally be able to stand beside Jin Guangyao in his next.

The knife in the dark is effective because you cannot see it. Lan Xichen won't repeat his mistakes this time. He will be prepared to support A-Yao.

Heya Mercy! I'm the person who made the teen!wangxian fic rec list yesterday and it wasn't until you reblogged it that I remembered YOU WROTE ONE OF MY FAVORITE FICS EVER (i.e. The Oriole Behind You) so anyways if you don't mind, I would love for you to talk a little bit about that fic. I know it's been a while since that fic was published, but how did you come up with the idea? How did you come up with the ships? What was the process like when you wrote it? How did you come up with the twists and turns?

I didn’t come up with the forced marriages part. My sister @hamliet came up with the idea of Wen Ruohan setting up all these pairings. We both adore Wangxian, Xiyao, Xuanli, Nie Mingjue/Wen Qing, and Sangyu. I’d recently written a fic with Jiang Cheng and Mianmian (Sentiment), and Xue Yang/Chang Ping (Everything But a Father), and Hamliet pointed out that Jiang Cheng and Mianmian is perfect because he always blamed the fall of Lotus Pier on Jin Zixuan and Lan Wangji defending her. If his siblings married the respective defenders, it only fits for Jiang Cheng to marry Mianmian, and I love that idea.

As for Qin Su/Wen Ning, and Su She/Jin Zixun, I’ve written them in Brothers and Sisters and I adore the respective two cinnamon rolls and enemies-to-lovers aspect to our two bitter boys (Yes, I stan Jin Zixun because if I don’t, who will?). 

Hamliet asked me to write it instead, and I was all to happy to oblige. I initially set out to have a happy/cracky tone.

And then... Writing the twists and turns was really one of those things where characters take the pen and run with it. I opened with Meng Yao, and by the end of the first chapter, it was entirely different than the idea I’d had when Hamliet first texted me. A-Yao started revealing all this angst, and then Xue Yang arrived and still revealed more angst. Lan Wangji gave me even more angst with his pain in the second chapter. 

I wrote it faster than most stories, and the characters just kept choosing where to go. Some plot points remained unchanged: Wangxian had to have their questionable ‘first time,’ Xuanli needed to have Jin Ling. When I began to realize how many characters were having kids and that it wasn’t realistic... that’s when I side-eyed Meng Yao and realized it would make perfect sense for him to have slipped a potion in Qin Su and Jiang Yanli’s food. 

Jiang Yanli as the one orchestrating the rebellion was a surprise, but I really liked the idea of the gentle but brave Yanli as the driving force. She may be nice and sweet, but she’s incredibly brave in the novel, and I think she’s the type to risk everything for her son, just like she did for Wei Wuxian at Nightless City. 

I’ve always felt a little less comfortable with Songxiao, but diving into the stoic Song Lan’s feelings was really fun to try out and led to the surprising and humorous (to me) reveal at the end that he and Xiao Xingchen had never actually defined their romantic feelings before.

I think I was able to write it so quickly in part because this story was a great retreat during the tumultuous Spring of 2020. A comforting distraction from the outer hellscape. And... everything just kept falling into place based on how the characters worked out.

As I'm currently working on high school AU wangxian fic inspired by To All The Boys I Loved Before, it got me digging through ao3 to look for canonverse teen romantic comedies so I can nail down some characterization stuff. All of the following fics take place during the Cloud Recesses Arc and are incredibly hilarious, fluffy, and awkward. Hope you enjoy:

it's just (aah) a little crush (crush!) by @sweetlolixo: ~10k words. Lan Wangji starts courting Wei Wuxian after overhearing him bluff to his friends that he has a crush on Lan Wangji. Hilarity and miscommunication ensue.

Five Minutes in the Closet with You by @danegen: ~5k words. Nie Huaisang invents Truth or Dare and shoves Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji into a closet, Seven-Minutes-in-Heaven-style.

Orchids in Lotus Pier by @vamillepudding: ~22k words. Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng accidentally become friends. Wei Wuxian, an idiot sandwich, thinks the two of them are in love and is very upset about it.

Wangxian are Married and Have a Son (But Not Necessarily in That Order) by @mercyandmagic: ~25k words. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji try to hide their teen pregnancy without accidentally outing Wei Wuxian's trans identity and their secret relationship. Use protection, kids.

Saw a comment saying that tang jiu qing has once badmouthed mxtx and her fans, any idea about this?

I couldn't find much about this, which leads me to opine that she probably did no such thing and people are just being dramatic. :) Mostly I found people praising both authors, along with priest and a handful of other danmei writers.

The only controversy was a rumor that one or two MXTX fans accused Tang Jiu Qing of plagiarizing MXTX. Most commenters thought it was stupid, but there's always going to be one or two wild fans.

That being said, if anyone has more information, let me know.
