Random Thoughts on Persona 5 Royal - Part 3

I've been thinking a lot about what it'd be like if I were a Phantom Thief. Perhaps I'll draw that sometime.

God damn, this game is long. I consider myself someone with pretty good JRPG stamina, but I'm about 103 hours into this game and I'm nowhere near the finish line. For reference, my Persona 4 Golden playthrough maxed out at 100 hours.

It took me far too long to notice that the letters on Caroline and Justine's hats spell out "oxymoron".

The Doraemon reference in the movie theater got a chuckle out of me.

I like the little quips from your party members while exploring Mementos. One of my favorites is Morgana complaining about the tiny school desks in the suggestion box.

Ryuji and Yusuke's Showtime attack is the funniest shit I've ever seen.

The fact that Futaba's All-Out Attack splash screen says "Git Gud" is pretty indicative of when this game initially released. If the game came out now, it'd probably say "Skill Issue" or something.

Haru's Phantom Thief costume is probably my favorite. Hats with feathers in them are guaranteed to look cool.

Add Futaba to the list of characters who desperately need a hug. I like the idea of someone willingly asking for their heart to be stolen. After all, the Phantom Thieves don't just beat the shit out of scumbags: they help those who can't help themselves.

I also like how Futaba's awakening is somewhat of a callback to Persona 4, as she awakens to her Persona by facing her Shadow directly (no face-bleeding required).

How is she so goddamn short (then again, I guess being a shut-in could've stunted her physical growth)

You can tell that I have some stuff to say about Futaba. Yusuke has some competition for favorite Phantom Thief.

Another Persona game, another awkward beach scene... (except for Yusuke's lobster gag, that amused me).

Shadow Okumura needs to speak up, man. It's like they lowered his volume compared to the other characters (which kind of makes sense with the space helmet he's got on, but still).

Unfortunately, I have been spoiled as to the Black Mask's true identity. I don't care how old this game is, tag your damn spoilers!

When I was in middle school, I went to a water park on a school field trip, and the county schools rented it out for the students. I thought that alone was magical. Imagine getting a whole Disney park rented out just for you and your homies.

With the death of President Okumura, and the tanking of public approval, the Phantom Thieves' resolve is starting to waver...

The sixth calling card is addressed to Sae Niijima. I can't wait to see how this story will unfold.

With the way that Futaba peppers her speech with video game references, I see a bit of my 15-year-old self in her. I've noticed references to Pokémon, D&D, and RPG terms in general (EXP, trash mobs, etc.).

Imagine meeting a cute nerdy girl and the first thing she does is ask if you're a NPC 💀 poor Mishima, I would've never recovered from that

I like Iwai's little quips about gun terminology.

I would do anything for a politician like Yoshida.

As I have discovered, there are some unused voice lines implying that Sae was planned to be a romance option at some point. That would've been one hell of an enemies-to-lovers.

Well, I've gotten the Faith and Councillor Confidants to their proper ranks before their deadlines. I guess I'll wait and see what happens next.

So, I played the first bit of the Triangle Strategy demo, and I'm happy to report that I've added it to my list.

I love JRPGs, but oddly enough, I've never played a strategy-based RPG, and I was worried that I wasn't going to like the combat. The tutorial battle alone was enough to sell it to me.

Honestly, after I'm done with Persona 5 Royal, Triangle Strategy might be the next long-form JRPG that I take on. Problem, though: it's going to have to compete with the rest of my backlog (Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, the Octopath Traveler duology, several Final Fantasy titles, etc.).

Also, Frederica is really pretty, so I had to draw her.

Vent Art

Grappling with some complex feelings, Persona 4-style.

Listen. I agree that representation in media is important. Everyone deserves to feel seen in their favorite book, comic, TV show, movie, or video game.

But you have to know one thing about me: I hate being told what to do, almost to a childish degree. This is exacerbated further if the command has a specific tone that puts me off, such as being authoritative, combative, or guilt-trippy.

The dialogue in the second image wasn't an exaggeration: I have genuinely seen so many posts on here that demand the reader to draw or write an underrepresented group or suffer a consequence, such as being barred from creation, or even death. It's to the point that I've begun questioning if I really am a "good artist" or even a "good person" if I don't meet a criteria for representation. But... the criteria varies so much from person to person that there's no way that I could appease everyone. And don't even get me started on tokenism.

However, I don't feel like I'm allowed to openly discuss these feelings, since it comes off as privileged whining. And... maybe it is? I don't know. At least it feels better than bottling it up.

Random Thoughts on Persona 5 Royal - Part 2

One thing that this game does better than previous Persona titles is the satisfaction upon beating a boss. Taking down a Palace ruler feels so much more rewarding than beating a Shadow Self or a Full Moon Boss, especially watching them break down from guilt.

Speaking of rewards, Social Links (now called Confidants) have way more rewards for ranking them up. This is such a nice change, but I'm surprised that it didn't make its way into Persona 3 Reload. Granted, I think it's because Confidants are, lore-wise, slightly different from Social Links, as they're based on accomplices in crime rather than just bonds.

THE PERSONA COMPENDIUM CAN BE SORTED ALPHABETICALLY. Where was this feature two games ago?

Who let this small child into the magical catacombs?

Yusuke might be my favorite Phantom Thief so far. I feel a slight kinship with him, being an artist myself. Plus, I like his voice.

The Madarame arc gives me somewhat similar thoughts and feelings to the real-world AI art debacle. Y'know, with the whole plagiarism-for-profit thing. Someone smarter than me could probably word it better, but you get what I'm saying, right?

From what I've seen, I think that this is the most a principal in a Persona game has been relevant to the story. I don't know about Persona 1 or 2, but the principals in 3 and 4 were just no-name whatever guys.

Okay, the hot pot scenes were really sweet, with the squad just hanging out at Leblanc and talking.

That one Shinjuku scene is one that I've heard horror stories about, and... yeah, even after it was altered in Royal, it's still bad. At least it's brief.

As it turns out, I am far better at video game darts than real-life darts.

Makoto had it rough before she became a Phantom Thief. Glad that she did, since her Persona and costume are dope.

Fusion Alarms are way better than Persona 4's Fusion Forecast.

⚡️ Confidant Lightning Round:

Chihaya is too goddamn cute. She scammed me out of ¥100,000 with a block of salt and I couldn't even be mad.

Imagine if you were shopping for medicine and the pharamacist asked "Why do you have such a serious look on your face?"

I think Kawakami deserves a hug. And also five billion yen.

Yoshida's got my vote.

I remember reading somewhere that it's possible that Kasumi was planned to be a female protagonist, but was scrapped? Like, if you hack the game to give her Joker's guns, she can actually wield them (unlike other party members, who will just freeze the game). I could be wrong, though. Anyway, I can't wait to learn more about her.

Mad sus that I have to rank up Maruki's Confidant or else miss out on a whole third semester. He seems pretty nice so far, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled...

Overall, the story and gameplay loop have me hooked, even more so than previous Persona titles. Can't wait to see where the story goes next.
