Tartarus and Trauma
If HOO was YA (part one?)
I feel like this opinion is unpopular, but I want to give my take on it. Many things in HOO could’ve been altered or changed if the series was young adult. Don’t get me wrong I love it as is, but imagine how much deeper trauma and Tartarus could’ve been explored, if the series was targeted towards an older audience. Imagine how much deeper “dark” Percy could’ve ben explored.
First, subject: Tartarus. Yes, Tartarus was odd and kind of creepy in its own way. But it could’ve been so much darker and harder to survive with way worse challenges and close calls if the series was written for an older audience. Tartarus could’ve been mentally and physically destructive.
One thing I do admire about Tartarus fanfics is they are normally full of death, close calls, stakes, and insane amount of angst and pain. It’s insane. That’s what Tartarus could’ve been. Not that I want our characters to have more trauma, but it would’ve main the experience more realistic. Because with how dark Tartarus was, having nightmares and trauma would make sense.
Now, trauma. I get it, even in HOO, Tartarus wasn’t as big and bad as it could've been, but still. Two characters watched their significant other nearly die once or twice, and they’re just like WOOP. Another thing I like about some BOO fanfics is that they have trauma. Nothing about HOH is changed. Percabeth just has a rough time, which I hate to see but ✨angst✨. Nico’s trauma could’ve been touched on as well. I feel like it could’ve added so much more to BOO.
Like enough about Tartarus trauma but the other kids’ trauma in general. Hazel could’ve gotten a much deeper story with Leo; I would’ve loved to see that. Annabeth, my poor girl, could’ve had some series problems😭 Like she was pretty much gr00med. I’m not saying let’s make these kids suffer, but if these kids have dynamic pasts and lives already why not take it a whole step deeper with a matured audience. And in my opinion, this kind of YA still would’ve been safer for the younger end as well. Like 12 and 13 year olds.
Dark Percy... Yeah this man could’ve been unhinged. In HOO already, Percy mentions how he understood why Luke did what he did. Imagine if Rick took this another step deeper in this YA HOO. The main character and protagonist of the last series, not only understanding the villain but letting it get to his head? Maybe he could’ve became stronger in Tartarus.
Maybe he still came out the same but showed more grudge against the gods. It only adds up since they’ve messed with Percy so many times before he just snaps. Definitely not as insane as fanfics take it, but still deeper than before.

Percy Jackson Writing Prompts
Why not mix two of my favorite things? Here are some Percy Jackson writing prompts or scenarios to get you thinking/inspired!
If Frank was alive back when Hazel lived in New Orleans with her mother, what would he have done for Hazel? How would they have met? Why was he in New Orleans?
What if Percy was a demigod from the sea? Would he still be as powerful and dangerous if he was a merman, had siren/merman kind of features and powers? What kind of person would he be?
What if Annabeth Chase was the spy? How did Luke persuade her to spy for him? Why did she agree to spy? This this, how would Percy and the others react? What would they do? If she turned around for the good like Silena, would they consider her a hero?
How comfortable does Percy get with Paul? Does he get to a level where he starts calling him dad? What does Poseidon think of this? Does the god even notice? Does Paul fill that gap in Percy that was there for years from Gabe and Poseidon’s absence?
What if Piper continued onto a path of crimes? Would her charmspeak continue to improve even though she didn’t know she was using it? Would she have ever found Camp Half-Blood? How would this shape or break her character?
Did Nico use Hazel to fill the hole in his heart from Bianca? For whose good did he retrieve her from the underworld for? Did he realize Hazel could live and be his sister? What were his TRUE intentions?
What if Tartarus was 100 times not middle grade Tartarus? What would it look like? How would Percy, Annabeth, and Nico be after? What would they be like during? How would Tartarus change them, for the good or the bad? Would Tartarus have any physical and mental forever lasting effects? Could they have been killed? Who/what would’ve killed them? What kind of new powers would they discover?

Annabeth is Autumn
Annabeth is the reader, the bookworm, the hot chocolate and coffee girl, with the boots and the sweaters and flannels. She is the embodiment of fall. She sits in the park on a cool fall day reading. She loves the peace and the colors and the cooling weather. She doesn’t like one thing about fall; Halloween.
Annabeth already hates most holidays, being jealous of the “family traditions” that comes with each of them. She always felt left out whenever her family carved pumpkins or made leaf piles to jump into. She hated how she never felt loved on Valentines Day. She’s just hated holidays, but Halloween was always the worst.
With all of the scary monsters, she was always reminded of her real life. Her demigod life and that’s why she didn’t fit in. It shocked her back to the real world after her fall reading. She has always hated spiders, more than others. With the spiders that always visited at night, seeing life-sized ones never helped her fear. She wasn’t a coward or a baby, but Halloween always hit somewhere harder than the rest of the holidays.
After the books, she’s learned to LOVE most holidays. Having her friends and Percy’s family around to carve pumpkins, open presents with, and to put ornaments on the tree, she grew to love them. She felt invited and loved now. But one holiday never changed. Halloween.
After seeing the biggest spider in her life (Arachne), and walking through Tartarus, seeing the ghosts, goblins, zombies, and monsters that halloween brought with it only made her think of the bad memories. She didn’t like Halloween at all. Sometimes, seeing large faux cobwebs and spider decorations caused her to have a small panic attack or flashback.
But other than that, Annabeth Chase is fall. No one else can even compare. She is fall and fall is her. No argument.🍂🍁🎃👻🪦🧟‍♀️☕️

CHB CHRISTMAS
I know I just talked about Fall/Halloween, but that post got me thinking. Why the heck would the kids at camp half blood celebrate Christmas? It’s literally a Christian holiday. I know a lot of people that aren’t Christians still get presents and celebrate this holiday, but I’m sure the gods aren’t very happy that the demigods would be celebrating a holiday in honor of another deity that isn’t them, and that is far more powerful than them.
Like imagine it’s after thanksgiving and the demigods are all hauling a tree into the center of camp. Dionysus sees and is like, “What is going on, in the House of Commons?” And the demigods are like “ChRistMaS🎄🎁🎅” And he’s just like, “HOW DARE YOU CELEBRATE MORE CHRIST WHEN I’M STANDING RIGHT HERE?!” The demigods are like: 👁👄👁
I swear the gods would be so insulted. Dionysus would turn the people bringing in the tree to dolphins right there. The demigods would get the message. No more. They don’t decorate but of course they still give presents to each other. Like who wouldn’t? But yeah, Chiron’s just there like: “Nobody cares😒. Why you gods gotta be like that.”
Poor little Annabeth and all the young campers are like 👁💧👄💧👁 They’re all so offended that the gods are offended but they’re not surprised. In fact, the campers have debated on making up a holiday like “Gods Day” on Christmas so they can decorate and convince Dionysus to let snow through the border so they can all celebrate properly without getting sausaged by their parents.

Jason's Personality Type:
ISFJ
The ISFJ personality type is literally called the defender! Jason Grace is perfect for this personality type! He leads Camp Jupiter and the seven into many battles, but he has the loyal tendency to protect others. Remember the scene in The Burning Maze? yes, he gave his life for Apollo. He knew Apollo had to finish this quest, he as a fighter and leader, understood what had to be done. Jason is very hard-working and he pushes himself. Imagine how he felt knowing that Percy nearly defeated him? He wouldn't never accepted and would’ve worked harder than every before. He is so devoted that he doesn’t know when to stop. Jason remembers everything I swear (well, except for that one time). He remembered his toddler years VERY clearly. He is a great listener and takes great interest in Piper’s stories. He loves to spoil her and make sure she feels loved. From one of the first times he met her, he called her a knockout. Jason gets energy and pride from making others feel better. He loves spreading kinds and showing others how much they mean to him. No doubt Jason is an ISFJ.

I don’t know if I was meant for Percy Jackson, or if Percy Jackson was meant for me. Here are odd, and probably not coincidences at all that prove I was made to read Percy Jackson and become obsessed with it in every life I live.
Exhibit 1: Even from the a young age, I always loved the idea of kids of princesses, villians, monsters, etc. I watched Descendants, Ever After High, and Monster High. I don’t know what it was, but I loved this idea.
Exhibit 2: Superhero like movies were the only thing I wanted to watch. I wanted to watch Marvel, DC, Lab Rats, Mighty Med, and pretty much anything else where people had cool magic or special super human abilities. I always wanted to watch Stranger Things as well.
Exhibit 3: When I was around ten, I discovered Disney’s Hercules and was immediately obsessed. I loved it so very much even though I couldn’t explain why. Around the same time, I discovered Mary Downing Hahn’s books, and learned that reading was actually cool.
Exhibit 4: In the first half of the school year before I read Percy Jackson, I wrote a ‘book’. The main characters name was Katie, her brother’s name was Jason, and they were the Piper family. 💀💀💀 Okay, but for real how does this kind of prophetic thing happen???
Exhibit 5: As explained before, I used to have a blue hairbrush around this time, and my initials are RED. I was also in my “I want to be an artist era” at the time.
Exhibit 6: Percy Jackson and I are very similar. We’re both sarcastic, sassy, and loyal (I know, I’m loyal, but no where near Percy level). My favorite color was also blue at the time when I first read PJO, and I recently discovered a love for swimming.

Dark!Percy vs. Soft!Percy
Yes, this is a debate that goes on in my head about every single day of the year. We get canon soft! and dark! Percy, but both content is very limited. This is the ultimate debate. Of course, every one is entitled to their own opinion.
CANON
Alright so I think dark!Percy wins the canon debate. We all know the scene in House of Hades where he chokes Akhlys with her own poison. I see this scene as survival instincts and protecting Annabeth. Now, the scene in Last Olympian where Annabeth is hurt and he yells to “Stay back!”, gets me every time. I’m definitely missing some, but canon dark!Percy, is still Percy. He doesn’t go crazy insane, but he’s still protecting himself and his girlfriend which is totally Percy. I love how Rick writes dark!Percy. I just can’t explain it. It’s perfect and I love him. Soft!Percy in canon is also amazing, but it’s not as good as dark!Percy in canon. He goes out of his way to protect his home and his family, all the while still being aware of his power and what he’s done. He doesn’t loose his mind and I love it. It’s just perfection.
FANON
Okay, I have to say, fanon is a hard battle. I’ve read a few good dark!Percy fanfictions, but they’re not very common. Maybe I’m a little bias because I want to see something in character, or even Percy and Annabeth being dark together, but either way not all of them are good. Sometimes Percy runs away from camp if Annabeth simply breaks up with him, and then he sets a goal to come back and destroy her and the camp for betraying him. These get on my nerves. Like that’s so out of character for Percy! I know, I know, it’s fanfiction, but sometimes I even come across Percy x Anyone on God’s Green Earth and I despise that personally. Soft!Percy in fanon just hits different. Like sometimes he's a bit OOC, but it’s in a way that I enjoy it. Like cuddly, hugging, sweet, Percy makes my heart explode. Seeing him love on his mom and Annabeth makes my heart swell. Like it just wins for me. Whether he’s with Annabeth or not with these it’s just such a refreshing thing to read about a good boyfriend or guy in general. I love him so much in those it’s unbelievable. I am almost always satisfied with the stories I read of Soft!Percy!
