It's Complicated
It’s Complicated
Life can indeed be complicated, and sometimes it may seem like you are weak. We’ve been there before, haven’t we? We feel overwhelmed by the challenge and wonder if we’re up for it. It’s natural to be scared or to feel like we don’t quite have what it takes, but all too often, the fear can take over and keep us from starting and trying. (more…)

Feelings
I’m feeling kind of down today for some reason. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the weather. It’s freezing out, and I went to church this morning. It was nice, but I didn’t feel connected with God. (more…)

Change is hard; there’s no doubt about it. But it’s also essential for growth. Whether we’re talking about personal or societal change, progress always involves some transformation. (more…)

Life is a Series of Changes
Life is a Series of Changes
Nobody likes Mondays. I think that is pretty much established across the board. After a weekend of rest, everything that can go wrong will go wrong on a Monday. The problems that a long Monday presents are so cliche at this point that we have t-shirts now that chronicle their pain. (more…)

If It Isn't Yours
If It Isn’t Yours
We’ve all been there. Someone in our lives makes an outrageous claim- like they did all the work on a project or are the best at something. When somebody over-claims, they are taking credit for something they didn’t do and taking credit away from someone else. We are essentially telling the other person that they owe us something. (more…)

Who Does More?
Many of us have experienced the frustration of feeling like we are doing all the work around the house while our partner seems to be slacking off. According to Jonathan Haidt’s Happiness Hypothesis, this is a common phenomenon. When husbands and wives estimate the percentage of housework each does, they estimate more than 120 percent. (more…)

Focus On Your Strengths
Focus On Your Strengths
We’ve all been there – we think we’re nailing a presentation at work or a project we’re working on, and then someone comes along and poops on our parade. Maybe they point out an error we made or challenge our methods. It can be deflating, especially if we thought we were doing well. (more…)

Reflecting on Virginia
One of the things that I was most excited about in moving out to Virginia was the past we would take in. The east coast of America is pretty rich with it. From the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, you are constantly being presented with a part of our nation’s history. Also, much of this requires very little driving to see it. (more…)

What About Your Friends?
What About Your Friends?
They say you can’t choose your family. You’re born into a particular set of parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, and uncles, and that’s that. And for the most part, that’s true. You don’t get to pick your parents, grandparents, or cousins. But you do get to pick your friends. (more…)

Cherish Those Memories
There is a saying that I am sure everyone has heard that says “You never know what you have until it is gone.” This saying is so old and clichéd that it has become almost meaningless. However, there is a lot of truth to it. (more…)

That To-Do List
We all have a never-ending to-do list. I know I do. I keep it on my phone. Some days it feels like we’re just checking things off, only to have more things pile on. There’s always a list of things we need to get done, whether for work, school, or just around the house. It can be tough to try and focus on these things when other things on our minds seem more critical. Getting bogged down by the…

Being Busy isn't Always Bad
Being Busy isn’t Always Bad
In today’s fast-paced world, it can sometimes feel like we are expected to be always busy. We are constantly bombarded with demands on our time, and it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We are juggling work, family, and social obligations, and there is always something else that needs to be done. It can be easy to feel like we are not doing enough or not…

Don't Forget To Breathe
Don’t Forget To Breathe
You get the idea. Life is busy. You wake up in the morning, and you’re already behind. There’s no time for breakfast, so you grab a coffee on the way to work. You’re in meetings all day and barely have time to eat lunch. You’re so busy that you don’t even have time to think. All you can do is react to whatever comes your way. This is no way to live. (more…)

What's Beneath the Surface
What’s Beneath the Surface
Every time I get into the water, I feel my heart racing. There is something about the water that fills me with anxiety.   I tell myself it’s because I’m excited to swim, but I know that’s not the whole truth. The truth is, I’m terrified of what might be lurking beneath the surface. I can’t see what’s down there, and that scares me. Either way, an irrational fear comes over me every time I take a…

Crippling Fears
Yesterday, I wrote about the importance of facing your fears. Many of us are afraid of things that are entirely rational and capable of being overcome. I encouraged you to push past your fear for your personal growth. However, the more I thought about it, the more I considered that there might be some fears that a person cannot overcome. These fears, or phobias, can be lifelong and crippling.…

Everyone has fears. For some people, it’s a fear of heights or spiders. For others, it might be a fear of public speaking or failure. Fears can be big or small, rational or irrational. But they all have one thing in common: they can keep us from living our best lives. (more…)
