Also, really tired of people saying āviolence is never the answerāā like what?? Why is everyone acting like a saint now? Put yourself in Wills shoes. Sure, maybe he couldāve done some different, but I feel like he acted like any human would. He acted human. He made a mistake, but Chris shouldāve watched his mouth.
About the Chris Rock/Will Smith postā¦
You say that verbal violence is almost as bad as physical violence by why does there have to be violence at all? Everyone acts like Willās only choices were to sit in silence or verbally/physical assault Chris. He could have approached him after the fact to explained the situation and asked for Chris to apologize to Jada either privately or publicly. He could have even pulled a Kanye and took the mic. That would have been a better approach imo. Iām not denying the joke was in bad taste but Will could have handled it better rather than letting his emotions get the best of him.
āRather than letting his emotions get the best of himā
There. You know why his emotions got the best of him? Being a celebrity is hard. Your every move is on display. Every decision you make in your life is televised and commercialized as articles on social media. I canāt imagine the heavy toll that takes. The constant abuse that they canāt escape, either on social media, television or outside of the internet. Itās insane. The price to entertain others is tainted and full of entitled people who believe you should behave this way because they would believe it would have been the better choice.
Sure he could waited and taken the joke like a good boy. Itās easy to analyze and say after the fact what someone should have done. However, the slap was a statement of self defense. Violence WILL ALWAYS EXIST. I think itās utterly bunkers, obnoxious and frankly quite entitled to say āwhy should there be violence at all???ā.
I should have also mentioned previously, especially with the recent actions of The Academy on banning Will for ten years, that violence is also systematic. Itās why POC and people with disabilities/on the spectrum understood and sympathized with his actions. Chrisā actions not only stigmatized black womenās hair but the stance of a woman being bald in society as well, no matter the reason. A light slap is quite frankly an understated reaction to an off script joke.
People are only against and scared of (defensive) violence when it means that itās use is a chance their actions that cause harm on others will be quickly corrected. Itās a good use to break oneās ego and cause shock/sense on the harm they are causing. A lot of the freedoms we enjoy exist because people were willing to use violence.
The fact that so many (white) wannabe peacemaker people are taking opportunities to make this about themselves, especially by annoyingly spreading toxic positivity or saying how their āchildren being shockedā caused them ātraumaā and pitting all the cause on Will proves us once more that we as a society have a long way to go.
Iām going to assume this is also you as well. You calling it āabuseā is so disgusting. Youāre also part of the problem. What can fuel the cycle of abuse is backing up the abuser and putting the (victim) defender in the same bracket as them.
Donāt compare being scared of calling someone a cunt because you donāt want the possibility of being smacked for it as āabusiveā. Itās called consequences. There are context that matters so letās not act obtuse and ignore them.
For others reading, simply donāt fuck with people. Donāt unnecessarily provoke them if you donāt want to face the consequences.
I agree that plot wise, Encanto was set up better because the story wasnāt super complex and vast like Rayaās was, and the ending felt more complete, but I donāt think thereās a need to put down Raya to hoist Encanto upš
Iāll still never forgive Disney for coming up with the names Yelana, Honeymaren and Ryder instead of using actual SĆ”mi namesā¦ or the fact that the Northuldra with speaking lines were all voiced by white actors and yet, they had a SĆ”mi choir appear within a scene shortly after their introductionā¦
Also, the fact that Raya and the Last Dragon was a melting pot of 11 different Southeast Asian countries, and not one of them had its people portrayed accurately or respectfully. Also Sisu and the dragonsā designs are purely disrespectful and downright disgusting.
Disney really stepped up their representation game for Encanto though by actually setting the movie in a real country during a real period in time. And it had good songs. And it had better world building, it didnāt try paint a picture too big for the canvas they were given. And the plot was just more consistent. And Abuelaās little speech at Antonioās gift ceremony was written better than Benjaās speech. Encanto is superior and Iām right and I should say it
Kinda tired of seeing people say that RATLD was wasted potentialā¦I feel like the world the movie was set in and the characters and faces it showed, showed all of us what Kumandra was and what it could be. Then we all started wondering what it would be like as a series and wanting to see more of it. I feel like thatās where the whole āwasted potentialā idea comes from just because the ideas we wanted to see in the movie werenāt in it. The movie simply needed more time to be fully immersed into the world. I doubt this is the last time the visit Kumandra though. The world is too interesting.
