Tonight I went into Barbara Hale's back catalog and watched West of the Pecos. This is the only screenshot Amazon let me take, for some reason, but I really wish I could have captured pretty much the entire movie.

Ostensibly, the movie is a Zane Grey western (which makes me wonder why I never saw it as a kid with my dad, I'll ask him next time I talk to him) but really it's a romcom just with a western setting. It was so funny and so cute and Barbara Hale and Robert Mitchum had such great chemistry! Plus knowing the backstory that this movie is really how Barbara Hale got together with her husband of 30+ years after asking the director to expand his role so he'd be on set more just made it that much greater.

12/10 would recommend, go watch it.

There's not much difference between him accusing her of making up stories about him and her during my childhood telling us that our emotions are governed by the "stories" we tell ourselves. The biggest difference is I think she learned it from a book she was listening to instead of going to therapy.

"That never happened, I never did that, you're making things up to be angry at" turned into "Well, you can be upset if that's the story you're telling yourself (implying that there's nothing to actually be upset about regardless of the situation)"

No wonder I don't feel like my parents, especially my mother, take me completely seriously when at some point I was basically told to just...spontaneously rewrite or reexamine my own memories in order to not be sad or angry. Never taught how to deal with things or express myself healthily. Just told me my emotions were my own responsibility and expected me to figure it out.
