Okay I've recently rewatched series VIII, trying to see the good in it (honestly this actually annoyed me more because there is potential there! It sucks but the potential is so frustrating) and so here is a comprehensive list of the things I actually like about it:

- Kochanski's hair - Chloë looks so good I love that hair so much

- Pete: Part 1. In another series it would easily be a weak episode, but here it's a shining beacon of silly-goofy-funtimes amongst a sea of yikesness

- Kryten and Kochanski getting on. I really don't like what they did with Kryten in SVII so I feel like this should have been what they went with from the beginning with them - Kochanski gets on well with Kryten because she already knows him from her universe, and instead of Kryten getting jealous of Kris, it's Lister getting jealous that Kris likes Kryten more than him

- the way they show that Nano!Rimmer is fundamentally a different person from Holo!Rimmer - no angst over being dead and killing 1167 people! an actual friendship with Lister!

- Geraldine McEwan as Cassandra. This is probably my second favourite episode of the series, just because I think she's neat.

- the CONCEPT of the entire crew being revived (they're thrust suddenly into a deep space voyage situation and are woefully unprepared for it! Kochanski and Lister have Changed Immeasurably but everyone around them is the same! Rimmer being told there's another version of him out there, being a space hero! Such excellent scifi concepts...and yet...)

- the CONCEPT of them being thrown in the brig (Porridge is one of the best sitcoms ever written for a reason, and the brig setting could be so cool if they explored it even a little bit...and yet...)

- the CONCEPT of them becoming Canaries (I think it would have been a cool twist if it turned out the reason Hollister was so set on them going to the brig was so they would become Canaries, as they're the only people on the entire ship with actual experience of deep space travel so he Needs them there...and yet...)

- the purple prison uniforms are fun

- that's it
