I'm glad we got 1,000 Years Old first in the Year of Vampire BLs because it is ridiculous in a very enjoyable way for me.

Like the property manager's story was so stupid! Girl saw a body with bite marks in the neck, and came to the conclusion that it was really big mosquitos, so the room has a bug problem. Sis, really?

Then Yoh thinks Pun is actually an alien who is just saying he is a vampire as a coverup story. Sir, really?

But puts on a scarf after giving Pun the most knock-off looking cross necklace because his friend convinced him that Pun was actually a vampire.

A vampire who wants to have a sleepover and not like a BL sleepover but like a 10-year old girls slumber party sleepover.

Because it's his birthday!

This feels like a 10-year old wrote a story about a lonely vampire who just wanted friends for his birthday. And I mean that in the best way possible.

BECAUSE THE CROSS ACTUALLY BURNS HIM!

I hate the blood soup, but I'm liking this adorable story. So stupid. So cute.

Maybe it's because I love colors, but I love how colorful these subtitles in 1,000 Years Old are because, apparently, in Thai, Somchai was saying Pun was getting so upset that he was turning red, but the subtitles picked this phrase:

I like how the entire scene plays into what Somchai is actually saying - Pun IS a vampire, and if Yoh isn't careful, Pun will be out for blood. Somchai proved that Pun can't control himself, and once he starts, he can't stop.

And all while the boys were in their pink and purple (💕love💕). I noticed that supporting image for your argument, @avorbl

Catching up is Hard to Do

Wrote a one-shot during Nano to help with some background for the next part of Allie & Kaidan's journey. It's been kind of proofread/beta'd so any mistakes are all mine. Brain's been a bit mush lately - hitting 50 & the changing hormones that come with that have really wrecked havoc on my mental health; working 2 jobs/6 days a week doesn't help, either, but I'm muddling along.

Enjoy! > > > > > > The cafe was a small place, tucked away in a quiet corner of Tayseri Ward. Though with the influx of war refugees, it was far less quiet than it used to be. Still, Kaidan found it was one of the few places he could go without being recognized as The Second Human Spectre. Rather, if people <i>did</i> recognize him, they left him alone. Regardless, Kaidan was thankful for a peaceful change of scenery to get his paperwork done.

After he paid for his coffee and pastry, he took a moment to juggle his datapads around so he could carry everything to a table. When he turned around, he spied a familiar face tucked away in the corner, sitting at the spot he usually claimed. He hesitated, not sure if his approach would be welcome. After all, he and Rahna hadn't spoken since he broke up with her and broke her heart. He let out a heavy sigh, realizing if he only had one good talent left in him, breaking hearts seemed to be it.

Still, there was a war on, and he didn't want to not at least say hello. Everything after that would be up to her. So he walked to her table and acted surprised to see her.

“Rahna? I thought that was you. How are you doing?” he asked, bracing himself for a verbal lashing or for her to throw her drink in his face. Instead, she startled, realized who was talking to her, and gave him a huge smile.

“Kaidan!” she exclaimed, nearly knocking her chair over when she jumped up to hug him. “How are you? I've been keeping up with Normandy things on the news and wondering how you've been!”

Rahna gestured for him to sit down, and he immediately took her up on her offer. He was thankful she wasn't mad at him – she had every right to be – and happy she was willing to at least (maybe) still be friends.

“So, second human Spectre, hm?” she teased, giving him another smile. “How's that going for you? Seems like you already have enough to do,” she gestured to the datapads, “or is some of that Spectre stuff?”

“It's a little of both,” he admitted. “Training rosters, mainly. Plus some stuff I was doing before the war that I'm still responsible for. But the Spectre thing, yeah.” he let out a sigh and shook his head. “Allie set the bar pretty high there. Everyone I've talked to seems to think I'll be ok, so I guess I'll be ok.”

He noticed Rahna tense a little at the mention of Allie's name, so he quickly changed the subject. “How about you? Did you get in with the Alliance and that research project?”

“Oh, I did!” Rahna's face lit up and she leaned forward, happily telling him about how much things progressed.

“I know it's a terrible thing, Kaidan, this war and all, and I know I'm probably a terrible person for saying this, but there is some good coming out of it all. We talk to soldiers who've been around Reaper troops a lot and people who are presumed indoctrinated and we run all sorts of tests... blood work, cat scans, MRIs, all of it.”

Kaidan listened as she explained that her team was running the gamut of tests to try and figure out just what indoctrination was and how it worked. They ruled out any kind of radiation because that, by default, changed a person's DNA and people didn't really change physically until they were put on the Dragon's Teeth or otherwise manipulated by the Reapers.

“And you should see that bit of research,” Rahna marveled. “A huge team of people trying to reverse engineer those monstrosities and figure out exactly how they take human flesh and turn it into machinery. It's incredible.”

She went on to explain how, through process of elimination, they were able to figure out Reaper tech put out an ultra-ultra low sound frequency. “It's barely detectable to even the most sensitive equipment. Things are almost on hold until we get something built that can pick up soundwaves that low. But now that we have that much information, we're trying to figure out how exactly it's changing brain waves and basically reprogramming how people think. Then the next step will be trying to figure out how to shield it. From there we can develop new helmets for troops to wear, or maybe some kind of implant to block those sound waves...”

Kaidan smiled as Rahna continued to explain her research. He couldn't help but notice she had the same kind of excitement in her voice that Allie did when she talked about astronomy. His smile faltered a bit when he found himself wondering, yet again, if he was ever really over Allie's death when he started dating Rahna. Doubt quickly turned to guilt and he questioned if he should have stayed single or maybe not have let things get serious. He still cared about Rahna and truly wanted her to be happy.
