“Okay,” he says, when she’s tripped well past far enough. Then, “Yeah, ha ha.”
Rhea’s head picks up, the spark to her laughs slowing.
“Would be funny,” he mutters.
She makes a noise, analogous to a confused moorhen.
His head tilts back, toward Elizabeth’s — at least previous — position (growing eyes out the back of his head not having represented an achievable aim as yet). By the way Rhea’s eyes narrow at a point behind him, with some distance, he’d judge she’s not moved off far.
He should bite his tongue. Instead he says, “It’d piss her off.” Confiding companionable feels — too comforting.
Rhea’s eyes flail over him, and he just cannot wade through questions right now, requires some shortcut. His mind reels through potential bargaining chips like a rapid flick over a fruit machine’s full display, lighting on an absolute payout of one.
“Gimme,” he demands summarily, grabbing for her nearest ankle and trying to swing it into his lap.
All saints day month!

say a bnf fan writes a popular fic that defines the ship for the entire fandom, and it really makes an impression on you. then say the fan has a falling out with the entire fandom and there's legendary drama whispered about for years, though the specifics have been lost to time. people move on and the fandom experiences a great migration. then say, several years later, this fan writes a book that becomes very popular, but it's weird because some scenes in the book are reminiscent of the popular fic, even though you know the book is not fic with the serial numbers filed off because of various important differences re: plot, characterization, tone, etc. and then this book gets turned into a movie even though it admittedly has several issues; sloppy pacing, a shallowness of world building, a lack of rigor when it comes to craft, etc. and the crowd goes wild. and it keeps coming up in conversation. and there's no way to express to ppl who weren't there that you will not be seeing the film because you could reread the fanfic at any time, and arguably it is BETTER than the book, and that's enough (though of course the fanfic has been taken down and you have a bootleg copy you have memorized, so in fact the last time you read it was in 2013).
anyway. life is a rich tapestry.
