Film 123 of 2020: IT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN TO A DOG. It really is delightful to see how Carole Landis evolved from being little more than a pretty face and a big pair of b**bs, into an accomplished, versatile actress. She isn't a name that springs to mind when one thinks of the great actors of the 20th century, but a remarkably high proportion of her films were very good indeed. The film in question here is a jolly newspaper flick (and I love a good newspaper flick), which suffers, somewhat, from a preposterously convoluted plot. Dog lovers will enjoy this a lot more than those of us who love them not; there is a lot of dog in this movie. The real star, however, is not the doberman, or even Ms. Landis, but a young, but instantly recognisable Harry Morgan - M*A*S*H fans take note!

#101 Extermínio, de Danny Boyle (2002)

Eu gosto simplesmente da ideia de jogar um homem sozinho no meio do caos, e ele ser perseguido por um bando de maluco esfomeado. Claro que existem referências aos clássicos de George A. Romero e outras obras do gênero, mas podemos dizer que Extermínio (28 Days Later) mais influenciou do que foi influenciado. O remake de Madrugada dos Mortos, de Zack Snyder (um dos poucos filmes bons do diretor, diga-se de passagem), que o diga.

Jim (Cillian Murphy) acorda peladão no maior estilo Milla Jovovich, na franquia Resident Evil e descobre que Londres foi pro saco. Tudo está destruído e a maioria das pessoas foi contaminada com um vírus da raiva feroz (desculpe o trocadilho). Jim encontra um grupo de outros sobreviventes e eles tentam escapar juntos da ameaça.

Para os iniciados em The Walking Dead, é praticamente impossível não olhar para Selena e lembrar logo de Michonne. Especialmente porque Selena é cruel com os inimigos e costuma andar acompanhada de um enorme facão. Ela é apresentada desta maneira para ir se revelando uma pessoa mais frágil e deixar uma margem para a investida romântica de Jim. Na maioria das vezes em que os roteiristas tentam enfiar romances no meio de filmes como Extermínio, o resultado é uma merda. Para a alegria geral, o romance de Jim e Selena é desenvolvido naturalmente. Sem pressão. E o espectador torce para que eles consigam escapar com vida e ficar juntos.

O elenco também conta com o experiente Brendan Gleeson, que interpreta a figura paterna que Jim precisa. Ele é carinhoso, responsável e cuida para que os personagens consigam escapar da cidade com vida. Christopher Eccleston (9º Doctor!), parceiro de Danny Boyle em Cova Rasa, dá as caras como outra figura paterna para Jim, mas desta vez representando a autoridade e imposição.

O roteiro de Alex Garland possui diversas passagens expositivas, com diálogos contando para o espectador o que está acontecendo. Esse probleminha (que incomoda tanto algumas pessoas inteligentes e passa tão batido para outras menos exigentes) é compensado com diversas rimas interessantes. Extermínio é uma obra sobre o medo e a solidão. No primeiro ato, Jim acorda e se descobre sozinho no mundo. Pouco depois, quando os personagens estão acampando, ele tem um pesadelo e acorda acreditando que foi abandonado. E por fim, no terceiro ato, ele acorda mais uma vez, mas agora ele têm segurança e aguarda pelo resgate.

Se você ainda não assistiu a Extermínio, e se for um fã de zumbis, tente corrigir isso o mais rápido possível. Além de oferecer uma interpretação diferenciada dos mortos-vivos, o longa-metragem possui todos os elementos que fazem Danny Boyle ser um dos grandes cineastas da atualidade: o uso de uma trilha sonora forte em momentos chave, aliados com uma montagem ágil e um ritmo alucinante. E tudo misturado com muito sangue, e babas, e essas coisas que a gente gosta de ver em filmes de zumbis.

Film Review | Call Me By Your Name (2017)

It’s a beautiful and breezy slice of adolescence, and it kind of covers a lot of romantic ground. Timothee Chalamet absolutely kills it - I wouldn’t be surprised if he nabs that Oscar. 

It all just seems so effortless and I think that’s what is mystifying and captivating about it. All the scenes just kind of happen and play out without seeming out of place or abrupt or sudden - this’ll be a masterclass in both editing restraint AND indulgence, because it IS both. It’s crazy. It touches on really evocative emotions in super simple scenes and it’s this natural dialogue that anchors everything that keeps it from spilling over into soap opera/melodrama territory. 

Maybe not a “run out to the theater” but definitely watch it when doing Oscar catch up.

365films2024 | #8 - Whisper of the Heart

It's been a while since I've watched a Studio Ghibli film (or any animated film) and this was a pleasant surprise.

As I watch it, I can't help but feel endeared to the characters, because they're so innocent and full of life. My favorite scene was actually when Seiji went to Tsukishima's classroom and asked for her. Her classmate's teasing was just so cute!

This movie reminded me of the joy of everyday life, of finding and working towards your dream. Also those two are cute together--oh, young love!

Film 119 of the year so far: THE MAN FROM TEXAS, 1948. A film which swings violently between accomplished, urbane comedy, and super-serious melodrama. The comedic moments are very successful, the melodrama is clunky and a chore. Without those overly serious sections, this could have been a very good film; to make matters worse, those are the only sections to feature the great Lynn Bari. Una Merkel is excellent. Una Merkel is always excellent. Quality 6/10 Entertainment 6/10.
