Bob Dylan, More Than Just a Musician
"While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked"
-It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
Bob Dylan is personally one of my favorite musicians, and my favorite song by him is "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" from the album Bringing It All Back Home. He is so much more than just a musician and this song proves it.
The song as a whole, points out the hypocrisy in the values of American society and criticizes the basis of the "American Dream". The stanza above is a straightforward example of it (disclaimer! This is mixed with my own personal interpretation),
"Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates"
The school system is known for leading people to believe that knowledge and hard work can lead you to the top. In reality, there are so many more factors that stop ordinary folk from reaching those goals. People are taught to believe they can make it when in actuality they are being led into submission to work for life in a capitalist society.
"But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked"
However, Dylan reminds us that those on top with power will also be judged, and are not shielded from the eyes of the people.
There are so many more instances of Dylan's poetic genius and how he wrote these songs filled with reference and meaning amaze me. Let me know other lines or songs from him you like!! :))
