The First Spectre, Chapter 1: A Milk Run?
I know I said I wasn’t going to do this… but evidently I am.
Title: The First Spectre, Chapter 1: A Milk Run?
Fandom: 911, Mass Effect Trilogy.  May also have some borrowed lore from extended Mass Effect Universe as I don’t keep Andromeda stuff segregated in my head. Will probably also be pulling some 911 Lonestar people in as 911 doesn’t have a big enough cast to cover all the roles.
Pairing: EVENTUAL endgame Buddie but it’s going to be the slowest of slow burns (think somewhere in excess of 200k).  Will have Some Buck/Abby and Eddie/Shannon is at the beginning. Will also have eventual Madney, probably some slight Bathena and if I end up using LS characters will have Tarlos at the back end.
Warnings: Will have canon deaths (and one or two that aren’t) but not Eddie, Buck, or Christopher.  I make no promises about anyone else but I’m sure people will be able to guess pretty quickly how certain missions are going to end. Fic is NOT finished and is promising to be a doozy on the word count end. I will be updating irregularly and my current long-fic priority is finishing FFO FIRST (2023 is it’s year damnit).
Fic summary:
Thirty years after the mars ruins were discovered leading to the Charon Relay and twenty since the First Contact War, humanity is still striving to take its place amongst the Citadel Council as equals. Commander Evan “Buck” Buckley, the lone survivor of Akuze is nominated to become the first human Spectre.
When his test mission goes sideways, Buck uncovers a much larger threat against all sentient life. Can he convince the Council to prepare for war or will they ignore the dangers that are closing in?
A new cycle has begun. The Reapers are coming.

a very brief verse bio for all the verses.
01 // 616, main verse, canon divergent
this one has a post go find it. main verse/blog canon and how i write clint.
02 // Square Enix's Avengers Game
Pretty goes exactly as the game; and game verse Clint will also probably work for the Spidey Games, Guardians game, and Midnight Suns.
03 // Star Trek
this is set mainly in the AOS timeline, but i do know voyager and prodigy-ish. Throughout the timeline of the 3 movies; Clint is a pilot of the Enterprise on the beta or gamma shift. After Beyond, he is a security officer and eventually chief of security. ( this has a post)
04 // Wastelands
Old Man Hawkeye, Old Man Logan, Wastelanders. Verse setting that revolves around the various aus of Marvel's Waatelands.
05 // Old Man
Basically, older Clint maybe minus the wastelands or Old Man Clint from Wastelands yeetede into 616 like Old Man Logan does.
06 // Mass Effect
Clint is a human Spectre for the Citadel/Council. His ship is small crewed ship, intended for stealth, which he has named The Broken Arrow (he very much needs a new ship, hence the broken)
07 // Last of Us (or zombine in general)
Clint's a runner for the Fireflies, and then eventually he's a hunter/patrol man for a settlement. Strictly uses a bow.
08 // Dragon Age
He's an ex-templar; he got out of a criminal sentence by signing up to be a templar. He hated being a templar. Sucks how the Chantry makes all their templars lyrium addicted, isn't it. ha. ha.
09 // Pirate
Pretty straight forward. He's a pirate. My context for pirates is Black Sails, so this was a lot more serious toned.
10 // Cowboy
He's a cowboy. Duh. I'll figure this out later.
11 // Medical Drama (influenced by so many medical dramas i watch)
Clint is an ER Doctor. Yup. This man went to medical school. He likes the varied pace of ER. He's just trying to live his life man. Works way too much. Lives on coffee.
12 // Spy or Assassin
Figure this one out. What the fuck is he doing? Whose side? He works in Internal Affairs :) :) :) [that's a lie/cover made for him by Shield]
13 // Firefighter w/ 911 series influence (both)
Self explanatory. Really
14 // Baldur's Gate
Dex Fighter/Rogue multiclass (yup) // he's a Harper, possibly gonna be a tadpoled companion; he just works in fantasy settings. You know, bad/sad childhood, ran away to the circus, criminal who got into a lot of trouble (circus fault) and then he finds something/somewhere to redeem himself and use his skills for good; The Harpers.... and then if BG3, probably tadpoled and act 2, the harpers you meet are like oh shit that's where you went clint

First Contact: Ch. 1
A group of friends were playing video games like every other evening when it happened. They were laughing and playfully taunting each other.
Daniel: Bomb's away!
Jericho: Oh, come on! That's not fair!
Daniel: All's fair in Smash Bros, Jer!
Charlie: Oh? Even this?
The TV screen showed a typical Super Smash Bros Ultimate match. Charlie's Ike proceeds to smash Daniel's Samus off the ring. Daniel: Dude!
Jericho: Haha! Hashtag Justice for Kirby!
Meanwhile, a Pikachu and a Mewtwo were having their own duel.
Jessica: You want some of this?!
Matthew: No, thank you!
A white poodle laying by Jessica's feet barked happily, wanting to be included.
The match continued in the same fashion until there was only Samus and Pikachu left. Each at one life left. The showdown had begun.
Charlie: No, not Pikachu and Samus! They're supposed to be friends!
Jessica: You can be friends with someone and still kick their ass!
Daniel: I am SO glad you said that!
His Samus immediately cracked a smash ball open, giving her her ultimate smash.
Jericho: Take cover!
Jessica: Ack! Abort, Peeky! Abort!
Daniel: Nobody escapes the ULTIMATE SMASH!
And then it happened. A massive explosion a short distance from the house. The sound and aftershocks shook the building. The group were stunned into silence. The poodle began to bark loudly.
Matthew: What the hell was that?
Daniel: I swear that wasn't me.
Charlie looked out the window.
Charlie: Was that a meteor?
Jericho: It must have been. That was huge!
After Jessica calmed her dog down, she and Daniel joined Charlie at the window.
Daniel: It must have landed close by. Wanna check it out?
Matthew: Shouldn't we call someone first?
Jericho: I don't know who to call when a meteor hits.
Jessica: 911?
Charlie: It's not exactly an emergency. ...How about this? We'll go take a look. If there's a fire, then we'll call 911.
The gang agreed and gathered their spring jackets.
Jessica: Noodles, you're in charge until we get back.
The poodle woofed his affirmation. He watched through the window as the group climbed into an old pickup truck and drove toward the small forest where the explosion came from. After a short drive, they arrived at the tree line. One by one they hopped out of the vehilcle.
Jericho: If it is a meteor, I call dibs!
Jessica: Pfft. Good luck dragging it back home.
Jericho: I have my ways.
Charlie reached back into the truck and gathered some masks. Covid was winding down, but the group of friends always made sure to have a healthy supply just in case. He passed them out to the others.
Jessica: Never thought I'd use these for smoke.
Matthew: I think I see smoke from that direction.
They set off in the direction he indicated. After a few minutes of walking, the group came across a life-changing sight. There was some kind of futuristic looking pod that was broken in half, but it was the unconscious residents surrounding the pod that demanded attention. Each one more vastly different than the last. There was only one conclusion.
Aliens.
~~~
Finally got around to setting up the first part of one of my Mass Effect AUs! The beginning is a little clunky in my opinion but I think the story picks up quickly afterward. OCD was really kicking my ass today so getting this update done was a real struggle. But the important thing is that I did it anyway!
Most Popular One Shot (by kudos) this year: Foregoing of the lie (however scary) (146 Kudos)
Most Popular Multi-Chapter (by kudos) this year: I don’t have any multi chaper fics hahaha
Favourite story you’ve written so far: I’ve said it before and I’m gonna say it again: Nur wer gegen den Strom schwimmt, ist kein Ponyhof! It was so much fun, and everyone should read it ;)
Fic you were nervous to post: Probably what yields the need, because it was way outside my comfort zone.
How do you choose your titles? Uggghh. Titles are the worst and I hate them. Song lyrics. It’s song lyrics almost every time.
Do you outline? No? Not really? XD
Upcoming work you’re most excited about: I haven’t started anything yet, but I’m excited for the ME Rarepair exchange that’s happening very soon.
AO3 stats (for 2020)
Amount of works posted: 25
Total word count: 32.163
Goals for next year: Keep writing, I guess. Maybe try to write longer things? And I gotta say, deleting Tabby’s answers here and putting my own makes me feel like my fics are massively unpopular. So is it even worth it?
Hi Hayley, quick question, after the Lawsuit Cluster fic of awesome, what do you plan on tackling next 911 wise?
Hello, Nonnie!
I have a pinned post at the top of my blog that somewhat outlines my current WIPs, the largest and most ambitious of which is a Fringe AU I’m writing with @starry-eyed-guttersnipe. Idk if anyone else in this fandom ever watched/was obsessed with Fringe like we were, but we’re having fun.
I also have a bunch more prompts Ive gotten from folks tucked into my inbox getting ready to be written, but I am also pretty sure all my creative energy is going to be sucked into anxious anticipation for the season finale (and playing Mass Effect Legendary) so it might be a week+ before I have anything new.
Well when I say it like that it doesn’t seem very long.
Thank you so much for stopping by!
I wanted to write a funny story that is very based on a comedy sketch I saw and found very funny, so I hope you guys enjoy it. It’s literally just humour, no angst or anything, which is very unusual for me. I don’t know if I suceeded though, so I’m sorry if it isn’t funny. OH! And this is a human AU, so they are not sides. ^^
Title: I’m on it
Warnings: ....swearing? A little bit. And mentions of weapons? I think that’s all, send me a message if there is more!
Pairings: Platonic logince, but it’s far from the focus on this story.
The one thing Roman didn’t expect when he came home from a hard day of work was a man standing by his windowshill. He blinked in confusion as he saw said man, wearing thin green gloves and performing surgery on his window with a tool. Roman was a simple and very confused man at the sight, not knowing what he was supposed to do or to expect, nor did he know who that man even was. He was around 5′ 6 tall, wore a black hat, black shirt with a scale pattern in gold, brown shorts and black sneakers with yellow stripes, his most defining feature being that he was currently performing surgery on Roman’s window, most likely with the intention to enter the prince’s home.
Roman, frankly, had no idea how to react. Who was that guy? Was it his window-guy? Did he have a window guy? Does he have window-people? Is he part of the government to intimidate him, to look for any signs of potential harm, drugs or other heavy stuff? Would he have to dig through masses of documents if this guy found something, not that he had any dangerous substances in his home.
Roman stood still, perfectly still, completely stunned at the sight before him, thinking about what to do while he was gaping like a fish. What was he supposed to do, how was this encounter supposed to play out?! Should he leave? Should he just let the guy do his business and leave in peace? Should he get to a phone and contact the police? Or maybe contact Logan? Logan would know what to do in this situation!
The man looked up, revealing his brown eyes that were widening as he put the tool down and spotted Roman. Both of them were completely stunned for maybe a second, before a truly beautiful smile flashes across the man’s face and he suddenly yelled: “HI! HOW ARE YOU?!”
Roman, in his complete confusion stupidly answered with: “FINE, THANK YOU!”, already mentally slapping himself for such a stupid answer, why was he talking to this guy, what was wrong with him?! And the problem was, that it only got worse from that point on, because Roman’s brain clearly hadn’t caught up with his mouth yet as he stupidly continued with: “HOW ARE YOU?!” And then, even stupider, asked: “CAN I HELP YOU?!”
The moment this sentence left Roman’s lips he quickly shook his head, mentally scolding himself, seriously, what was wrong with him, what was he thinking?! Why was he offering help to this guy who tried to break into his house?! Why was he even CONSIDERING it, even if it was subconciously?!
The man tilted his head slightly, clearly not expection this answer, idly pointing to the house next to Roman’s, claiming: “Your neighbour led me to you! You have a front door buzzer, right?”
Roman, blinking, asking in his bewilderment: “Front door buzzer?!”, which was far from the weirdest thing the guy has said so far, because there was no person living in the house he pointed at. The nice old lady who used to live there died last month and now the house is empty. So the guy was clearly lying, but for what purpose?! He looked down to the man’s midsection, trying to spot some kind of weapon or gun, cautious even though he couldn’t spot anything.
The man grinned as he said: “Yeah, your neighbour told me you have a front door buzzer, so I thought-”
Roman made wild movements with his hands as he interrupted the man, not wanting to hear any of the stories he made up, quickly saying: “Nononono, forget the neighbour, forget the buzzer!” Before it dawned on him, his eyes widening as he realized: “You are a BURGLAR, trying to get into my house!”
Now it was the man’s turn to make wild hand-movements, shaking his head vehemently as he defended himself: “Nonononono, you got it all wrong! Why don’t you let me in and we discuss this situation over a cup of tea?”
Roman could only blink in bewilderment, not knowing if this guy was actually serious or if this was a test with hidden cameras of any sort to test the average intelligence of the regular american man. He really hoped it wasn’t the latter, because if it was, he already would have done poorly. He still shook his head as he grew impatient, yelling: “NO! I will most definetly not let you into my house when you were just performing surgery on my windowshill!”
The man put one hand on his hip in a sassy manner and groaned, provoking in a rather cheap but effective manner: “Oh, come ON! Don’t be such a pussy! If you are a real man you would let me in!”
Roman slowly but surely lost his faith in humanity, what even was this encounter?! What was this guy trying to say him? That he wasn’t a real man if he didn’t open the door for him?! He shook his head in a quick gesture and then responded rather loudly, convinced at least some neighbours, not the dead one, were now watching them through their darkened windows: “WHAT KIND OF REASONING IS THIS EVEN?! THIS IS COMPLETE NONSENSE!”
The burglar visibly deflated, sighing heavily before shrugging, apparently knowing when he is losing, as he suddenly asked: “Ah, well, it was worth a try. Do you want me to leave the same way I came?”
This could be exciting. He could say yes and see what would happen, if the guy would just disappear in his magical lamp until it was rubbed again or would suddenly get his jetpack out and blast off again? But what if he said no? Would the man just move in, tell him how he preferred his sandwiches and then take over his bed and live in the bathtub and refrigerator? Could Roman risk that? Certainly not. So he said what every human being would probably not say: “S-Sure.”
What Roman wasn’t expecting, was that the guy quickly shook his hand and spoke a quick: “Farewell good sir.” Before running down the front porch and sprinting down the road, out of sight in not even two seconds, just a dustcloud trailing behind him, leaving Roman completely stunned, staring after the man with an opened mouth, even when he already left. He lightly slapped his cheek to return to reality and quickly entered his home, grabbing his phone and punching 911 in. He explained the situation as quickly as possible and the police assured that they would get the man, causing Roman to nod and slowly hang the phone up, thinking
Logan was still at work at a nearby place and the guy was running past the bulding he was working at, maybe he could help Roman to decide what he was supposed to do now. The number was quickly picked and he sat down on the sofa, calming down his slightly ragged breathing, the adrenaline of the stress slowly leaving his body. A casual but polite voice answered him and Roman immediatly recognized that it was Roman.
“Hello?”
“Logan, you’re still at work, right? Look out the window, do you see a guy, uhm, black hat, black shirt, brown shorts, black shoes, running like a motherfucker down the road?”
The quiet clicking of shoes was audible on the other end of the line before the answer came. “Yes, I do. What about him?”
Roman exclaimed in a slightly panicked voice: “That guy tried to break into my house!”
Not even a second later he heard Logan’s answer that send chills down his spine. Just three words he would certainly never forget.
“I’m on it.”
“Wait, what?!”
The next moment he heard on the other end of the line glass shattering and a thumb, accompanied  by a loud screech that sounded like it came from the burglar, before he heard angry yelling from Logan and then the sound of heavy running. Roman could only stare at his phone in shock as he sprinted to the window and saw the burglar suddenly running the other way, Logan hot on his heels, a wild expression on his face as he was chasing after the guy in his working attire. “LOGAN! ARE YOU INSANE?! GET BACK HERE, I DON’T KNOW IF THIS GUY HAS A WEAPON! LOGAN!” But Logan had already hung up and slowly disappearing from his sight as the two were running down the road. How can these two be so damn fast?! He gets another idea which is probably stupid aswell, but he calls the police again, screaming into the phone in a panic:
“HI! I’m the guy from before who reported the burglar! OKay, here is the update! First guy, ehm, black hat, black shirt, brown shorts, black shoes, run’s like a motherfucker. Okay, the second guy who is now chasing after him, tall guy, short brown hair, wears glasses, black shirt with blue necktie, phone in hand. First name: Logan. Listens to: Logan. DON’T SHOOT HIM! SHOOT THE OTHER GUY!” Thinking for a moment before continuing: “Oh, and here is his number, give him a call!”
Roman didn’t expect them to actually do it. And with Logan’s coordinates, the cops knew exactly where to go to. Roman thought it was the second coming as the police-helicopter flew over his head and three police-cars were speeding down the road, what was this, GTA V?! A helicopter, on foot pursuit AND THREE cars?! And the burglar still managed to escape. He drifted into an empty parking lot and was just gone, like Hoodini, like he transformed into a snake and just slithered away, Roman never saw this guy again, he wasn’t sad about it, just very VERY confused. Roman gave Logan a very long scolding this evening, still not able to properly process the probably weirdest encounter he ever had in this state. This was certainly a story worth talking about.
morning writing drafts
I should be working on sleepless in la.
Big SHOULD there.
Instead, I think i’ve come up with a name for a 911/mass effect mashup.  And been graphic editing because who wants to finish their rom com that should have been done already?
*sigh*
Title: The First Spectre (aka previously known as untitled 911/Mass Effect space opera slowburn) chapter 1 vs prologue
Fandom: 911, Mass Effect Trilogy
Pairing: endgame Buddie (MShenko equivalent).  Assume anything else is fair game until we hit ME3 territory because i’m totally making Taylor into Miranda and Abby is going to be Liara.
Tags/warnings: i’m still not committing to writing this monster length fic(and I do mean monster length if I go for it—like 600k of the slowest of slow burns).  In the meantime i’m evidently writing a beginning, a divorce-era horizon disaster, and can clearly picture the catalyst firing/’don’t leave me behind’ scene in all its angsty goodness. Author may be in deep trouble.  First draft.  Assume Eddie=Kaidan Alenko and Buck=MShep.  Chimney is totally Joker.  Use of military terms that may confuse some audiences and be completely inappropriate as author does not have a military background and just reads too many generation kill fics.
Lieutenant Edmundo Diaz—known to his family as Eddie or everyone else as Lt Diaz or just Diaz—sat in the copilot’s chair on the bridge listening to Flight Lieutenant Han, aka Chimney, grumble about their newest mission orders.  Eddie thought that the grumbling was mostly for show—being assigned to work under Captain Robert Nash was a coveted position and good for your career.  The Normandy (known also by it’s engineering designation as SR-118) was a new type of freighter that was a joint project between the Alliance and the alien council races. There was no ship faster or with better handling anywhere in the fleet.
Chimney really should be happier he was getting the privilege of flying the equivalent of the most luxurious, high tech interplanetary transport ever made.  Instead, he was grumbling about scuttlebutt that he’d heard while getting his clearance physical from Dr. Wilson.
“Did you hear who you’ll be working with?” Chimney asked Eddie, implying that Eddie should be unhappy about his new CO.
“I heard I’d be working with Commander Buckley and there’s nothing to say.  He’s a good soldier.”
“A good soldier?!?  You heard what happened on Akuze right?  That he’s the only one who survived?”
“It means he’s capable and smart,” Eddie argued, trying to put an end to Chimney’s rant that had been going on for over a half hour.  “That’s good to have in a team CO.”
Chimney scoffed. “His entire team died except him. You going to be happy with him hanging you out to dry while he hightails it to safety?”
Eddie was beginning to think that the intel folder that had been sitting in his inbox wasn’t common knowledge as there’d just been a string of nonsensical numbers and letters as the sender’s contact information.  He’d been sent the extended—and highly classified—report on the Akuze Incident as well as the redacted official report that had been released to the press along with his official orders and a copy of Commander Buckley’s jacket. Eddie thought that Commander Buckley was lucky to have survived the first contact the Alliance had ever had with a thresher maw that had literally devoured an entire colony and then the rest of his naval special warfare unit that had been sent to investigate why the colony had gone dark.
Thresher maws were basically giant, hungry space worms with teeth the size of a small shuttle and spat acidic venom up to 3 clicks with eerie accuracy that would melt through shields and armor in less than two minutes.  If you didn’t die from the acid then you had to worry with either being eaten or crushed to death.  The damned things also hunted by noise and vibration so there was no escaping them other than getting off planet in a hurry.
Eddie might have nightmares about incidents like Akuze.  Commander Buckley had his respect for surviving one. The fact that the commander wasn’t out of his brain and stashed in some head doctor’s padded room drooling from being drugged to the gills spoke to his mental strength and resiliency.  The rest of his military jacket was even more impressive with the noted list of assignments and commendations including that he’d graduated from the Interplanetary Combatives Training (ICT) program and was one of the rare N7s.
Eddie’s only question was who had sent him the file—he was to be the XO for the ground team but it was highly unusual for him to have gotten this much intel up front…so who had given it to him?  It could be Captain Andersen since his name was also all over Commander Buckley’s file which suggested a mentor-mentee relationship but it could also have been the Commander himself or a third party who wanted to somehow prejudice Eddie in some way.
He was inclined to give his new CO the benefit of the doubt and see how things went.  Paperwork often omitted some truths and as a biotic Eddie had experienced his fair share of off-the-books blowbacks and prejudices.
Chimney, however, wasn’t.  The man was an inveterate gossip and had his ear tuned to get all the latest scuttlebutt.  Eddie had only known him for a few weeks but he knew if he needed to know anything about anybody on the ship then Chimney was the person to see.
The First Spectre, Chapter 2: Eden Prime, Part 1
Title: The First Spectre, Chapter 2: Eden Prime, Part 1
Fandom: 911 and eventual 911ls, Mass Effect Trilogy, May also have some borrowed lore from extended Mass Effect Universe as I don’t keep Andromeda stuff segregated in my head. 911ls stuff will gradually get introduced but we’re a ways from a lot of that.
Pairing: EVENTUAL endgame Buddie but it’s going to be the slowest of slowest epic slow burns. Assume any other canon pairings will make appearances.
Warnings: Will have canon deaths (and one or two that aren’t) but not Eddie, Buck or Christopher (or at least permanently 🤨). I make no promises about anyone else but those who’re familiar with both franchises will probably be able to guess in advance. Fic is NOT finished and is promising to be a doozy on the word count end. I am attempting to update every 6-8 weeks inbetween other writing commitments but it’ll EVENTUALLY get done.
Fic Summary:
Thirty years after the mars ruins were discovered leading to the Charon Relay and twenty since the First Contact War, humanity is still striving to take its place amongst the Citadel Council as equals. Commander Evan “Buck” Buckley, the lone survivor of Akuze is nominated to become the first human Spectre.
When his test mission goes sideways, Buck uncovers a much larger threat against all sentient life. Can he convince the Council to prepare for war or will they ignore the dangers that are closing in?
A new cycle has begun. The Reapers are coming.
Title: The First Spectre, chapter 2: Eden Prime
Fandom: 911, Mass Effect
Pairing: Endgame Buddie but it’ll be a couple hundred k before we’re there.
Fic summary:
Thirty years after the mars ruins were discovered leading to the Charon Relay and twenty since the First Contact War, humanity is still striving to take its place amongst the Citadel Council as equals. Commander Evan “Buck” Buckley, the lone survivor of Akuze is nominated to become the first human Spectre.
When his test mission goes sideways, Buck uncovers a much larger threat against all sentient life. Can he convince the Council to prepare for war or will they ignore the dangers that are closing in?
A new cycle has begun. The Reapers are coming.
Tags/warnings: first draft, Buddie —>MShepard, Biotic Eddie Diaz, Lone Survivor Buck, will have character deaths but not Eddie, Buck or Christopher (at least permanently). Space Opera levels of violence and alien weirdness.
They’re a few warehouses away from the space port when they run into their first and only survivor thus far, and she’s screaming for help.
“Ahhhhhhhhh!” A woman in Alliance Marine armor runs around a corner and almost smacks right into Buck face first and would have fallen as she bounced off him if he hadn’t caught her.
“Um, hi?” Slips out before Buck can check himself.
The woman shoves him aside, out of breath and raising her gun to point back where she’d come from. “They’re coming?”
“Who’s coming?”
It’s a stupid question.  The sound of a hoard of husks stampeding towards them makes her rambling explanation that follows unnecessary.
“—they’re dead.  The colonists are dead and those robots did it!”
Diaz’s biotics thrum as they cover Buck, shielding him as they prepare to be overrun. “Robots?”
“Geth!” She answers right before the first husk reaches them and then they’re too busy fending off husks to have any further conversation. Diaz continues to shine, his biotics providing the perfect compliment to Buck’s aim. The woman is no slouch either and Diaz starts giving both of them targeting assistance.  Buck can tell the biotic is tiring but Diaz doesn’t make a complaint, just keeps going and going.
Buck is going to owe the man a beer or two after this, assuming they both survive.
They’re just about done mopping up when Buck hears something mechanical and robotic make a noise he’s never heard before.  It’s low pitched, a thrum followed by a robotic trill, mimicking human speech as pitch rises at the end of sentence to indicate a question. The few remaining husks are whipping from side to side, their movements becoming even jerkier and more frenzied, mouths open and closing in those horrible alien screech-like screams.
The ground underneath Buck’s boots shakes as something heavy takes a step and then another.  The thrum blasts around him, louder, angrier as mechanical joints whir and the Geth steps into view, it’s single, lone eye swiveling on the long sinuous neck of interlocking joints as it locks onto Buck, light lancing across the space like a spotlight as it zeros in. Another whir and a muffled series of thumps and the eye seems to rotate and grow brighter, energy gathering and then shooting out at him only to smack against the biotic barrier that Diaz has thrown between them.  The wave of sound as the energy beam hits the barrier sets off a secondary concussive sound wave and Buck staggers back a step, fumbling for his rifle.
The woman fires desperately at the Geth, shots pinging off in all directions as they ricochet off the armored plating that covers the alien machine, hardly making a dent.  Diaz’s biotic shield flares, boosted as the man throws all his remaining energy into protecting Buck who’s standing there like a deer frozen in the headlight of the stuff of alien boogeymen legends.
Geth aren’t supposed to be here.  Last anyone had heard they’d withdrawn to behind the Perseus Veil after they’d decimated the Quarians and made them into nomads, their homeland of Rannoch lost to the rouge hive mind of the AIs they’d created to help them. Originally designed to be near indestructible, the Geth had been built as laborers and protectors until the AI had begun to question some of the tasks given it and the Quarians had attempted to destroy their greatest work.
The Quarians had lost their war over three hundred years before humans had opened and traversed their first relay. A cautionary tale told to any younger space-faring race about hubris and going too far.
Nobody but the Quarians had seen a Geth in hundreds of years—but the thing in front of Buck sure looked like the pictures of Geth Armatures in his alien tactics textbook. Diaz’s scream of Buck’s name as he pushed more energy into the shield around Buck finally jolted him enough to get moving again.
F it Friday writing/from a fic i’m totally definitely not writing
I have to go to a work party tonight (joy) but i’m procrastinating by putting this scene down as it’s been stuck in my head.
For the record… i now have three scenes half-written… and it’s one each from Mass Effect 1, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3.
Goddamnit plot bunny…. Can’t you give me a break??
Tumblr media
Title: The First Spectre (aka previously known as untitled 911/Mass Effect space opera slowburn) a chapter somewhere in the back third of the story that would fit in ME3 if you’re keeping track. Might end up have ME1=the first spectre, ME2=Spectre Reborn and ME3=The Second Spectre…. But who knows.
Fandom: 911, Mass Effect Trilogy
Pairing: endgame Buddie (MShenko equivalent).  Assume anything else is fair game until we hit ME3 territory because i’m totally making Taylor into Miranda and Abby is going to be Liara.
Tags/warnings: i’m still not committing to writing this monster length fic(and I do mean monster length if I go for it—like 600k of the slowest of slow burns).  In the meantime i’m evidently writing a beginning, a divorce-era horizon disaster, and can clearly picture the catalyst firing/’don’t leave me behind’ scene in all its angsty goodness and now i’m adding the actual ‘i’m here to help you relax scene. Author may be in deep trouble.  First draft with zero editing done.  Assume Eddie=Kaidan Alenko and Buck=MShep.
Tagging because they asked @shortsighted-owl, @monsterrae1 @ajunerose @alyxmastershipper  If you would like to be tagged for any updates or snippets from this one please let me know.
This scene inspired by this MShenko scene
To Eddie’s surprise, the door opens before he can knock or ask MADDIE to let Buck know he’s outside.  Buck almost walks right into Eddie, his gaze fixed on the datapad in his hands.
“Eds?”  Buck’s eyes are even bluer in the blue light from the aquarium that takes up the entire wall of the captain’s quarters, stepping to the side when he realizes that they’re almost chest to chest. “What are you—“
Eddie easily slips past him.  “Can’t sleep either?” He throws over his shoulder, inspecting Buck’s room for the first time officially.  It’s nice—if completely impractical on a battle frigate like the Normandy.  He suppresses the irritation that Cerberus thought to provide this sort of creature comfort with the hope of enticing Buck into their way of thinking.  Eddie has more than enough hard proof that Buck is on his side and not Cerberus’, otherwise he’d be dead from a bullet instead of Noah.
No more thinking of maybes.  That’s what Eddie had told himself before coming up to Buck’s quarters.
He needed to know.
No more what if’s.
Buck sets the datapad down on his desk which is cluttered with the things along with a pair of used coffee cups from the mess. Above the desk are a collection of model ships—just like Buck had on the original Normandy.  One of the ships was the Los Angelas—the last city they’d taken leave in before the Normandy Disaster had seemingly killed Buck and left Eddie to mourn his death and spend years thinking of what ifs.
“No,” Buck finally answers the question, arms crossed over his chest as he watches Eddie inspect his office.
“You can’t make yourself crazy over this,” Eddie tells him, fiddling with the bottle and glasses in his hands. ‘It won’t help.”
“What won’t?  I can’t know for sure that I didn’t miss something. Eds,” Buck draws out his name, huffing a bit in frustration and rubbing his face in fatigue. “I need to get back to work.”
Eddie makes a noise of disagreement in the back of his throat. “Five minutes.  Just one drink and then I’ll go,” he stalls for time, gesturing towards the low slung couch in the sitting area next to the bed, under the fish tank.
For a brief second, Buck holds out and then he’s sighing and giving in, unable to resist Eddie’s offer  “One drink,” he cautions as he takes a seat next to Eddie.
Eddie pours him a generous finger or two or five and hands it to Buck who sniffs at it appreciatively before giving a sip. “You know you’ve done everything you could, right?”
Buck stares at the whiskey like it has the answers to the universe in it’s amber depths.  “Everything?  It doesn’t feel like it.  I hope so.  I keep running the numbers and scenarios, wondering if I missed something.  If I could have saved one more person.”
“You don’t have to take this on yourself,” Eddie soothes, taking a drink of his own before reaching out to wrap his hand around Buck’s wrist. There’s tension in the muscles and then they relax purposefully as Buck watches him from beneath lowered lashes. Rubbing his fingertips along the tendons in a caress, Eddie tries to find the words he needs. “You’ve got a great crew you’ve built. Talented people that are all fighting by your side.”
Buck pulls away and throws back the entire glass of whiskey before getting up and beginning to pace, putting distance between them.  It’s like watching a panther stalking in front of the bars of it’s cage—lethal grace wrapped in an N7 hoodie and uniform pants, feet bare and silent on the rubber mat floors.  There’s a scowl on his face but it’s not focused on Eddie, but within and it hurts Eddie that Buck doesn’t realize how much he’s done because to him nothing short of ridding the galaxy of the Reapers will be acceptable.
Eddie steps into Buck’s path, making him stop.  Taking a deep breath, he moves to rest his hands on Buck’s hips.
Buck stills under the touch, frown melting away but there’s still a deep furrow between the eyebrows that betrays the stress that he’s under.  Eddie doesn’t resist the impulse to smooth it away and rubs his right thumb across it before cupping Buck’s unshaven cheek so he can’t look away.  There’s faint bruising under both eyes from the lack of sleep but the blue eyes are luminous and laser focused like the sniper he is on Eddie.  The hip under his other hand shifts, pressing into Eddie’s touch and decreasing the space between their bodies seemingly without awareness because Eddie has it all now.
He has Buck’s complete and full attention.
Picking his words carefully, Eddie tells him that he’s enough.  “What you’ve accomplished since the Reapers arrived has been nothing short of amazing. You saved so many people, brought so many together in this fight,” he paused, then made it personal.  “You saved Christopher… and you saved me, too.”
Buck breathes out through his nose sharply, an almost wounded sound escaping him.  “I couldn’t leave either of you,” he confesses, moving closer but there’s still just a tiny amount of space between their bodies. “What are you doing here, Eddie?”
“I lied,” he admitted, voice dropping a bit into more of a husky confession. “I didn’t just come for a drink.”
“What did you come here for?”  Buck is holding his breath, waiting on his words.
“I’m here to help you,” Eddie’s words stumble out of him, tongue tying itself into knots.
“Help me?” Buck’s eyebrows are climbing, confusion evident in his voice but he hasn’t withdrawn.  They’re still so close but not close enough.
“Help you relax.”
Eddie is never going to win awards for pickup lines but Buck seems to understand what he’s trying to say, if very badly.  His fingers seem to have a life of their own and Buck sways closer to him as he slips his hand around Buck’s waist to tug him closer.
“Relax?”  Buck’s pink tongue swipes at his bottom lip, eyes dropping to Eddie’s mouth.
“Relaxing will help you focus,” Eddie informs him before he can’t say anything further because Buck’s mouth is pressed to his.
The kiss is gentle at first, tentative like they’re both asking the other for permission to proceed.  When neither pulls away it becomes more persistent and then a curious tongue traces the seam of Eddie’s mouth and he’s opening to let Buck’s tongue tangle with his own.
When they part finally to inhale, Eddie is chuckling into Buck’s neck, pressing a quick kiss to the jawline. Buck is frozen against him, like he’s afraid that he’s going to startle Eddie and he’ll flee like a wild animal.
“Eds?”
In response, all he can do is to pull Buck back in for another hungry kiss.
Title: The First Spectre, Chapter 2: Eden Prime
Fandom: 911, 911 Lonestar Mass Effect Trilogy/Universe
Pairing: epically long slow burn Buddie (it’s not going to happen for >100k), assume canon 911 relationships will mostly eventually cross over including some Lonestar ones.
Fic Summary:
Thirty years after the mars ruins were discovered leading to the Charon Relay and twenty since the First Contact War, humanity is still striving to take its place amongst the Citadel Council as equals. Commander Evan “Buck” Buckley, the lone survivor of Akuze is nominated to become the first human Spectre.
When his test mission goes sideways, Buck uncovers a much larger threat against all sentient life. Can he convince the Council to prepare for war or will they ignore the dangers that are closing in?
A new cycle has begun. The Reapers are coming.
Tags/warnings: first draft territory. Science fiction AU, this is not a straight up fusion but if you’ve read anything else I’ve done you probably know what you’re in for. There will be character deaths (canon and NON-canon) but I will say Buddie and Christopher are safe as I don’t do letting them die permanently in stories. Space opera type hijinks including military war environment. This is going to be a very, very long fic.
Tumblr media
Buck sees Diaz nod to Jenkins out of the corner of his eye even as Chimney announces they’ve arrived.  “Ground team prepare for insertion.”
Bobby’s voice comes over the comms.  “Good luck, Buck.  Remember the beacon is your first priority.”
“Roger that. Thank you, Captain,” Buck replies and braces himself.
The airlock door opens and the pressure of the wind whipping around the Normandy presses against them then equalizes. They’re hovering two meters above the ground so they jump out, the jets in their boots slowing their descent enough that it’s not too rough of a landing but it still jolts Buck’s joints when he hits the ground.   The Normandy pulls away and they get their first look at Eden Prime.
On the surface, Eden Prime is Earth-like in that there are trees and rock and sparse vegetation that looks like they’re somewhere in the North American Rockies.  A few buildings rise above the tree line in the distance which according to Buck’s helmet HUD is about two kilometers away. They’ve been dropped far enough out from the target to be out of the immediate line of fire. but they’re going in mostly blind other than a map of the colony.
A quick scan of the LZ shows they are alone so Buck allows his HUD to calibrate to the new environment, getting feedback and intel such as relative direction and environmental feedback. Eden Prime has a breathable atmosphere with a slightly higher percentage level of oxygen to nitrogen but the air pressure difference makes its effects on human physiology negligible.
Wendell, silent until now, starts to head off to the left.  “Where are you going, Spectre?”
“This colony has been hard hit and there’s likely to be hostiles everywhere,” the Turian inclines his head as he checks his rifle.  “It would be best to keep our guard up and I move faster on my own.  I’ll approach from the west and meet you at the beacon.”
Buck knows that he really can’t argue with their appointed babysitter and he’s not against splitting up given they have a lot of ground to cover. “Roger.  We’ll approach the colony from the east.”
“I’ll feed you status updates but let’s keep the radio chatter to a minimum,” the Spectre says as he lopes across the clearing.  With a wave, he disappears into an outcropping of rock.
“Commander?” Diaz asks, waiting for him to give an order.
“Let’s move out.  PFC Jenkins, stick close—you’re our tour guide.”
“Devon, sir.  It’s Devon.”
Buck doesn’t sigh in frustration but it’s a close call. He can see Diaz’s face though, and the sparkle in his eyes says he’s still laughing at Buck’s predicament. “Move out,” he orders and points to the east.
“Is that mark on your face from Akuze?”
“It’s a birthmark, actually.  Akuze didn’t leave any visible marks on me.”  Mental scars?  Yeah it’d left dozens.  He could still hear the screams of his squad mates in his nightmares as the giant worm had smashed apart the survival capsule they’d attempted to hole up in after their ship had been gobbled up.  The engineers who’d designed those had accounted for earthquakes and dozens of other probable catastrophes but they’d never guessed or had the imagination to plan for giant building-devouring worms with acid spit and teeth sharper than an obsidian surgical scalpel.
“But it left invisible ones,” Lieutenant Diaz correctly added, pensively watching the surrounding brush for movement.  “I understand that.”
Buck supposed that Diaz did get what he meant.  In reading his military jacket, Buck had noticed that he’d received credit for prior biotic training—which was very unusual as Diaz had joined up as soon as he’d been old enough.  To have training beforehand meant that he’d been trained as a kid which had been made illegal about ten years ago after some scandal about kids being abused at a training facility without parental oversight. Diaz was just about the right age for…
Shaking his head, Buck banished that train of thought.  If Diaz was one of those kids he’d be dead.   There must have been some other training program offered before the law changed.
My brain does not want to focus on rom-com.  It’s not happening tonight.  Instead…. Have some more space opera.
Title: The First Spectre, Chapter 2: Eden Prime
Fandom: 911, Mass Effect, 911: Lonestar
Pairings: endgame Buddie.  Assume all other canon pairings may show up.
Tags/warnings: long epic slow burn.  Space opera AU.  **FIRST DRAFT** biotic eddie diaz, commander evan ‘buck’ buckley, mshenko—>buddie. We’re in for the long haul here.
Tumblr media
His ground team consists of LT Diaz as well as a former colony boy marine who’s still wet behind his ears but is an Eden Prime local so hopefully will be useful on the ground, PFC Devon Jenkins.  Buck is a little unnerved by the stars in call-me-Devon’s eyes as they suit up.  “Sir!” He exclaims, snapping into a salute.
Over Devon’s shoulder, Diaz is hiding a smile while pulling on his own armor but he doesn’t intervene, letting the young marine get over being star struck before they hit the ground is probably a smart move.  Diaz is a biotic as well as the senior officer of the marines onboard ship and he’s worked to get where he is, impressing Bobby along the way which was why he’d been handpicked.  Buck hasn’t had time to work with him yet but Buck is curious how they’ll work together given  Bobby was so impressed with him.
Buck isn’t jealous that Bobby spent the last two weeks talking about Diaz.  He’s not.  Maybe just a little bit sick of hearing about how good his record is despite him being a biotic. A true marine—as Bobby has called it.
This mission was going to prove whether or not Diaz was really all that and Buck wished that so much wasn’t riding on it.
“Oscar Mike in two minutes,” Diaz says, grabbing his assault rifle and heading for the airlock like an old pro. He pauses in the doorway and arches an eyebrow at Devon who is still gazing at Buck in adoration while making eye contact, seemingly asking if Buck wants him to handle the kid and his hero worship or if he wants to deal with it himself.
Show off, Buck mentally says but it’s without heat and he shakes his head indicating he’ll deal with this since it’s him that the PFC is gushing over. Devon is like a kid on too much sugar on Christmas morning and Buck’s about to tell him Santa Claus isn’t real.  He’s antsy and Buck worries he’ll shoot one of them by accident if he doesn’t get a grip. “PFC Jenkins.”
“I was serious.  You can call me Devon.”  The PFC practically has sparkles in his eyes as he stares rapturously at Buck, still not having his armor completely on.
“Finished getting geared up.  Diaz was right and we’re going to be in the LZ in less than two minutes.”
“Yes sir!” Jenkins fingers are clumsily finding the catches on his armor, taking three tries to get his breastplate to snap in place and he still needs his gun and helmet.
Buck watches him drop his helmet—twice. It bounces on the rubber mat flooring and almost brains the PFC who’d leaned down to pick it up. “Jenkins—“
“Devon,” the PFC insists again making Buck sigh.
“Devon,” he gives in.  “Get your ass in gear.  We’re taking you as the local expert so keep your head down and if you see anything get into cover while Diaz and I take care of it.”
“But I have a gun?” Devon picks his rifle up and, for once, is able to latch it onto his armor in one try with the mag locks. Buck isn’t going to correct him that it’s an assault rifle not a handgun—he’s not a drill instructor and they don’t have time.
“Just don’t shoot me or Diaz.”
“Never!”  Devon is turning bright purple he’s so scandalized by the idea.
From fics I’ll (probably) never finish
Damnit brain.  Stop it.  @tkwritesdumbassassins my brain really needs to stop this.  Like now.
*sigh* FFO gets finished first.  You hear that brain? *shakes fist*
We don’t even have a title yet…. Mass Effect WIP banner by @radio-chatter
Tumblr media
Untitled Buddie Space Opera/Mass Effect AU
Fandom: 911…. Original Mass Effect Trilogy
Pairing: Buddie, prior Evan Buckley/Abby Clark, prior Eddie Diaz/Shannon Diaz
Tags/warnings: first draft. Space opera.  mash up of Mass Effect MShenko and Buddie.  Buck is Commander Evan “Buck” Buckley, first human Spectre.  Eddie is an alliance marine, one of the few surviving L2 biotics (aka space mage).  Buck supposedly died 2 years ago in the wreck of the Normandy after being attacked by an unknown ship thought to belong to the Collectors but he was revived by the shadow organization Cerberus and given the means to go after the new threat to the Milky Way….
what happens when your brain wants to pair the two longest, slow burn romances of two different fandoms and says ‘what if we put one in the other?’ And you get this.  MShenko is a long, 3 game burn with a payoff that made me cry the first time I played ME3.  Buddie is at, what, 5 seasons and counting assuming it ever makes canon?
Yeah I like my slow burns….
I admit the thought of Eddie being a biotic (yay biotic booty!) is maybe also what got stuck in my brain.
So have some Buddie-divorce era mixed in a blender with that whole Mass Effect 2 Horizon MShenko divorce-era and you get this.
This is first draft.  Who knows if I’ll ever get around to writing the rest of this 600k epic.
“Eddie!” He calls before he can stop himself.
It is Eddie because the man comes to a halt before slowly turning.  All Buck can think is that Eddie looks unbearably good, his armor polished to a high shine, no dings or dents in it even though he’d been released from one of the Collector’s special coffin-like collection pods.  He’s still had the same ever-present scruff on his cheeks and his hair has a ruffled appearance like it’d been finger combed after sleep and just a bit longer than regulation standards. The two bars on his shoulders and around the collar denoted that he’s been promoted since Buck last saw him—Captain.  He’s Captain Diaz now—not lieutenant.
Buck still outranks him he notes in the back of his brain with satisfaction.  That is, if Buck still was considered part of the Alliance and hadn’t been declared dead more than two years ago.
You kept the rank you died in, right?
Eddie’s brown eyes search for whoever called his name and when they land on Buck there’s no mistaking the way he straightens and his spine stiffens as he comes to attention.  There’s a pallor to his face like he’d seen a ghost and he doesn’t look away as Buck lopes towards him, frozen to the spot and not running away.
“Eddie,” Buck calls his name, softer this time.  His hands itch to reach for Eddie and confirm that he’s in one piece.  Bobby’s message hadn’t mentioned who the Alliance officer was that had been sent to bring the antiaircraft guns back online—probably because he knew if he’d mentioned it was Eddie that Buck would have torn the entire galaxy apart to save him and the colonists be damned.
Bobby’s reticence to tell him where Eddie was had stung but now Buck suspected there was a reason he hadn’t been able to get in touch with Eddie. If Eddie had been assigned to Horizon then it made sense if he’d be out of comms range given the remoteness of the colony.
The puzzle pieces were starting to assemble in his brain and he was starting to come up with a picture that wasn’t pleasant to think about.
Horizon was the perfect target.  Human colony this far out without significant defenses and Buck suddenly suspected that the knowledge about the AA guns being inoperable wasn’t exactly a secret.
Bobby had sent Eddie here to witness a Collector raid.  Buck was sure of it.
Eddie who had a son—a son who only had one remaining parent.
Buck’s anger at Bobby was sudden and vicious.  How dare he put Eddie at risk!
The fact that Eddie was an accomplished marine and had a list of commendations almost as long as Buck’s arm didn’t matter.  Eddie had been his second in command and being put at risk like this…
Bobby had no idea how much danger he’d placed Eddie in and Buck’s blood boiled in fury.
Never mind that Bobby had been the one to send Buck the intel about Horizon that had sent HIM here…
“Eddie,” he called again, jogging to catch up. Lucy and Ravi hung back but following on his heels.
Eddie’s gaze sharpened and he frowned as he looked at Buck’s team behind him, immediately noticing the insignia on their uniforms and drawing his sidearm but he didn’t raise it.  Instead, he started to glow a faint blue as he activated his biotics and took a defensive stance, ready to react.  Violently if need be.
Shit. Buck waved Lucy and Ravi to stand down and walked the last ten paces to Eddie with his hands held up in peace.  In a one-on-one fight he knew he could probably take Eddie unless he started throwing around his biotics and then the math tilted the other way given how high Eddie spiked as an L2.  Buck had no intention, however, of fighting Eddie with or without biotics. “Eds—it’s me.”
“I’d heard rumors but I knew they had to be wrong,” Eddie growled, his voice rough from disuse and mistrust. “The Evan Buckley I knew would never have joined up with Cerberus.”
“It really is me,” Buck tried again. “Eds—“
“Don’t call me that.  Not while wearing his face, clone.”
“I’m not a clone!” Buck protested, doing his best to look innocent.
