I still very loathe the Media Trope of ‘’cold genius man doesn’t feel emotions and never has relationships... UNTIL.. one random relatively bland Preddy Woman comes along and warps his entire personality and ability to think, his heart has grown and his seeming asexuality has evaporated, he is now Normal :)” or whatever like... AS a walking generic hermit archetype myself.. we would NOT act like that .... just let people be detached weirdos in peace, you cowards .. OR, don’t bother to write one in the first place if you find us too boring to exist realistically in our natural state lol.. pathetic
#the only exception to this is its okay if he develops some pesudo-romantic psychologial fixation on one of his long suffering male sidekicks#or assistants or whatever (since this character acrhetype ALWAYS has some sort of like Straight Man Every Man helper to follow#him around and be an audience stand in. sometimes multiple like a whole team of assistants. sometimes just one etc.)#like a strange not-entirely-romance-but-mutualy-unhealthy-comedic-codependence w someone you worked w 25+ yrs COULD be in character. sure.#ASIDE from that one exception though..... just keep them aromantic and asexual.. why would someone who has been that way for their#entire fucking life suddenly be like ''well I've known this woman three weeks but she's really hot! whoops!''#''guess I'm going to act completely out of character! sometimes booba so booby it fundametally alters the dna of me personality. you know ho#w it is'' .. like shut up.. explode#It's not that I project personally onto these characters (writers are bad at writing them and they're generally annoying as shit) BUT just#like... coming FROM the perspective OF a cold detached ''robot'' seeming hermit freak.. like textbook scholar wizard man locked#away in a tower somewhere type personality... You just watch shows sometimes and you can SEE that the writers are trying to write#the Character Archetype that is your actual realworld personality and you're just like 'we do NOT fucking act like that!!!' lol#you know ? like .. i don't actually care about the characters themselves but more just.. the principle of the thing. staying true to what#has been set up. You can't be like ''oh yeah this is your typical cold detached hermit weirdo with zero interest in human relationships for#the most part blah blah blah'' and then 5 minutes later be like ''WAIT GUYS!! LOOK! they're still NORMAL! look they love booba#too!!! haha hashtag Relatable!!'' .. what have you done to him.. you've massacred the archtype.. cowardly fool#Also I'm referencing them as male because this character archtetype is usually male but the same thing can apply for other gendered versions#of the archetype. it's ALWAYS annoying. no matter what it is lol. GOD AND IT'S even worse when they're supposed to be like hundreds or thous#ands of years old like.. some sort of supernatural being who's ''above it all'' because they've seen the world's cycles for so long#and blah blah and then it's like ''omg.. suddenly into romance.. for some reason all 900 years of my life nobody has ever been good#enough but YOU.. random ass person who I met 30 minutes ago and are completely average in every way or maybe you have like one#special power or are smart or something but apparently somehow I've lived 900 years without ever meeting a single other smart person#or whatever but WOW.. you... instant soulamtes.. I am no longer aromantic and asexual. I am also no longer smart.''#at least if it's a human with a normal lifespan you can be like 'well they were only 30. maybe they genuinely did just have their first#sexul awakening' or something but.. you're telling me like.. 900 years??? 1000 years?? and NOW they're like 'whooa!!' lol#Which obviously all aroace people are different.. all people with autism or schizoid pd or any other mental illnesses that can sometimes#lend people towards that type of 'weird hermit' archetype are all different. plenty of these people WILL have relationships and sex and desi#re those things. but it's like.. if you are OBVIOUSLY  setting out to write that one VERY specific archetype within the broader archetype#then GO ALL THE WAY!! you cant have someone be like HALF-detached partial-hemrit sometimes-maybe-genuis or whatever#or I guess you can but like. it should be that way from the beginning. it's the random sudden shift in personality thats jarring

Random Qi Headcanons
- He cannot cook except for the most basic dishes and some slightly more complicated fish centric dishes. Since his parents were fishermen, his mom forced him to help with dinner sometimes and so he ended up learning a lot of fish dishes but it’s been a while since he’s made any of them.
- Despite it being such a big part of his early diet, he never really liked fish. The taste and texture were just too odd for him.
- He has a secret sweet tooth he’s a bit ashamed of. If you look at his likes, his only consumable he likes not involving tea is a Milk Chestnut, which is a desert item. I feel like aside from tea, he also tends to like sweeter drinks. I also think whenever he does drink coffee, he prefers it sweeter. I just can’t see him taking his coffee black lmao.
- Even tho he does like sweet things, he rarely admits it. I have an idea in my head of someone bringing him those super over flavored sweet iced lattes and every time he goes “:/ I don’t really like sweet things…” but then he drinks the whole thing in like 10 minutes and whenever the person is like “So you don’t want me to bring one next time?” He’s like “Well uh I never said that…”
- I also think it would be cute if the reason why Milk Chestnut is in his likes is bcuz it was a nostalgic thing, like his family always used to make it.
- This isn’t rly a hc since it’s very implied, but this man has a serious problem with compartmentalizing everything. He can take almost any type of stress bcuz he compartmentalizes it, but occasionally it will lead to him just randomly breaking down in silent tears and he has no idea why (I speak from experience..)
- He is aroacespec! He just is to me idk what to say. Not many deep thoughts on this one but he is very aromantic and asexual to me. If I was to put a deeper label on it probably like demiromantic and grayasexual, but sexuality and stuff like that isn’t really a big thing in the MTU (which makes sense like not only is it way in the future but the literal apocalypse happened)
- He has a whole binder of old designs he made up when he was a kid, some he’s made a reality some he hasn’t. He’s a very sentimental person, so it makes sense he would keep things from his past close. He wants to make his young self proud and prove everyone who said he couldn’t do it that he, in fact, can.
- This one is inspired by @/mytimeatlautia, he has a weighted blanket as a sensory aid. I think it would be adorable if he made the design for it himself too. (Imagine a personal quest where you need to make it for him and he won’t say why he needs it idk I just think that’s cute.)
- He names all his plants even though he thinks it’s stupid (he will not admit he names them). I also think that despite having so many plants he doesn’t really like biology that much, like he knows a good bit abt it ofc but I don’t think he’s super interested in it. He just likes having plants, he heard somewhere it’s good for your mental health and was like “So if I get a lot of plants it means I don’t need to spend as much time outdoors” (even though those things don’t really connect my guy is out here trying to be as efficient as possible.)
That’s just a couple. He’s my little guy. I love him vm.

Prompt fill #1 for @dimension20alphabet:
Alone
Riz knows that he’s a good detective. He has solved many mysteries, big mysteries even. He solved the case of his missing friend Penny, he solved the case of his dad, he solved—or well, helped solve—the puzzle of The Nightmare King. He’s good at his job.
But there is one mystery Riz has trouble solving, and that is the mystery of himself.
He’s not good at asking for help even though he’s sure he could need some. Maybe he could talk about this with his mom. The thought of that alone makes him break out in a nervous sweat. It was already kind of the worst to talk to his dad about it. Jawbone is probably good at this, but Jawbone is poly and had sex with many people just like everyone else he knows.
Everyone else he knows is just so goddamn horny. All the damn time.
Riz stops pacing in front of his desk and stares out of the window for what feels like two minutes straight but is probably only a millisecond.
Finally he decides to be brave. He managed to walk through the forest of the nightmare king, this is going to be a piece of cake. No big deal. As easy as stabbing a huge dragon, probably.
His mom is sitting at the kitchen table buried in a bunch of papers and thick textbooks.
“Hey mom. Can I—uh. Can I ask you something?”
His mom looks up from her work and she seems a little disoriented for a split second until her eyes focus on him and she nods.
 “Sure, sweetie. What’s up?”
She pushes away a stack of papers from the second chair at the table so he can sit down. Riz feels the need to start biting his nails, so he stuffs his hands into his pockets and sits down on the chair, his leg bouncing and his throat dry.
 “So. Uh—“
He searches for the right words. Words are hard and he’s never been very good at them. He knows clues. Feelings are just weird.
“Have you ever—uh. Did you ever, like—um. Feel. Totally alone about something? Like, something that makes you you?”
Sklonda blinks for a second and then her gaze softens as she stretches out her hand to reach for his. Riz hopes that she can’t feel how sweaty his palms are as she squeezes his fingers.
“Honestly? I think that is a very integral part of being a teenager. You think you’re really weird and no one would ever feel the same way and then somewhere along the way you find out that there are actually tons of people who are going through the exact same thing”, she says.
Riz stares at the only spot on the table that hasn’t been covered with papers or books.
“So, what you’re saying is... I have to look at the clues again and—and find out who else fits the profile?”
His mom ruffles his hair and Riz can see her shake her head fondly.
“I wouldn’t have put it like that, sweetie. But. Sure, yeah. Find another suspect and interrogate them until you find the truth.”
 Riz can work with that.
“Thanks, mom”, he says and flees from the kitchen to leave Sklonda to her studies. Back in his room he looks at his pin board that, during the last two weeks, has been carefully prepped with Riz’ most difficult case yet—the case of Riz.
His eyes follow the differently colored threads across pictures of his friends and notes that he took.
All his friends are on the board and Riz looks at all their picture, one after the other.
 Everyone is horny. Everyone.
 Everyone except—
Riz grabs his crystal. He knows that, if he thinks about it too much and starts making plans, he is not going to do it because this is scary. And if he learned one thing on their quest for the Nightmare King’s crown, it’s that sometimes scary things are easier if you just rush ahead without a plan.
“Do you have time to talk?”, he texts.
Riz chews on his bottom lip without realizing that it started bleeding because his teeth are too sharp. He looks at his crystal and tries to will his beating heart to go slower but he fails miserably and as soon as he sees the three small dots that indicate typing on the other end of the line, he sucks in a breath and stares at the display as if he might will the answer to appear faster.
“I have free time. Do you want to come over? Is everything alright?”
Riz sucks the blood off his bottom lip and weighs the options. He loves the manor, but it’s loud and noisy. Noisy in a way that sometimes makes his skin crawl. He swallows, lets his fingers hover over the keyboard for a second.
If everything goes to shit he can always leave the manor, but it would be awkward to throw a friend out of his office.
“I’ll come over. Be right there.”
Riz stuffs his phone into his pocket and rushes out of his room with adrenaline pumping through his veins. Maybe he isn’t such a great detective after all if he never really connected the dots about one of his closest friends.
He remembers a conversation about “please don’t have sex in our tent when we’re also in there” and “this is too much information and I’m very uncomfortable right now” now that he really thinks about it.
Adaine isn’t interested in dating anyone. Just like him. Well. No, that’s not correct, Riz thinks, as he rushes down the street to catch the bus. Maybe he would consider dating someone. But sex. Sex seems. Well.
Maybe Adaine doesn’t want to talk about sex. Maybe she will look at him the same way Aelwyn looks at people sometimes. Riz really doesn’t want to think about Aelwyn, because that makes him think about Fabian and that on the other hand makes him think of them together and how much Riz wishes they weren’t a thing.
If Riz cannot solve the mystery of Riz, maybe Adaine can help him like when they were investigating her mom’s room back on spring break. He goes through his pinboard in his mind and comes to the conclusion that Adaine is on there, but she has only been connected to Biz by a green threat, meaning one-sided sexual interest.
He is so occupied by his own oversight that he barely registers getting to the manor. The thought of going through the whole house and potentially risking questions about why he’s visiting makes his skin crawl uncomfortably, so he uses his sword and teleports directly into Adaine’s bedroom. A loud shriek accompanied by the sound of a heavy book dropping to the floor makes him turn his head.
“Was it really necessary to do this? We have doors”, Adaine says and Riz looks around to find her sitting on the bunkbed she shares with Aelwyn. Thankfully Aelwyn is nowhere to be seen so Riz can freak out in peace about what he’s supposed to talk about.
“Yes. Sorry, uh—I thought maybe I might meet Kristen or—or Jawbone or. Someone else. And then they might look at me and ask questions or maybe Kristen would joke about something sex related and then I might have to vomit all over the stairs and—“
“Riz, slow down. Do you want to hold Boggy?”, Adaine asks and scoots over on her bed to make space for him. Riz doesn’t really feel like sitting down so he starts pacing instead but he does take Boggy into his hands. His brain has gone into overdrive, he knows it as soon as it supplies him with the question of whether or not frogs feel conflicted about sex.
“What’s wrong?”, Adaine asks, her pale blue eyes following him as he walks through the room as if the movement could calm his nerves.
“So—uh. You know. I was wondering if maybe... I could talk to you about. You know. Sexandstuff.”
 “Sorry, about what?”
“Sex. And... stuff”, Riz repeats and he can feel his face burning as he stares down at Boggy so he doesn’t have to look at Adaine’s face.
“Oh, um. Well, I’m not sure if I’m the best person for that—“
“I know! That’s why—that’s why I wanted to talk to you. Because. Like. You know. You think it’s icky when Kristen talks about sixtynine and stuff.”
Riz takes a quick glance at Adaine and is relieved to find that she doesn’t look at him the same way that Ragh looked at him the first time they met each other. That is certainly encouraging. She actually looks a little thoughtful. Maybe even understanding. Maybe he’s reading her all wrong. Maybe she’s about to punch him out of the window because he mentioned Kristen and sixtynine and—
“You mean because I’m probably asexual.”
 “Yeah, you’re—what?”
“Asexual. And aromantic, but I suppose this is about the sex part, not the romance part.”
 “You’re. Wait. Ohhh—“
Adaine pulls up her shoulders and gestures to the free space on the bed beside her. Riz’ brain has frozen over because he’s heard a term he hasn’t heard before and now he wants to find out what it means.
The truth is that he considered searching for stuff like this on the crystalweb, but the thought of typing anything sex related into a search engine had him almost vomiting all over his office floor because it made him feel so terribly embarrassed and nervous that he quickly put the thought aside.
 “So—uh. What’s... that?”
“Well, I talked about it to Jawbone and he gave me some things to read and I’ve been doing some research, because... you know, everyone is going on dates and talks about kisses or masturbation and all that and—um. Well. This stuff mostly just always makes me uncomfortable. And I thought, you know. It’s maybe because elves are a bit prudish, but Aelwyn is certainly not like that and she talks about sex like it’s no big deal, so I... I wanted to figure out what it means.”
Boggy makes a sound like a squeaky toy as Riz accidentally squishes him a little too hard in his sudden excitement in the face of new clues and he quickly hands him back to Adaine.
 “So. You’re saying that—that it’s like... normal?”
 Adaine shrugs.
“Probably not normal, if you’re going by the textbook definition of normal. But not normal doesn’t equal bad, you know. Just how being poly isn’t necessarily normal but that doesn’t mean it’s inferior to monogamy. It’s just a thing that some people are.”
“So. So, uh—can I read that stuff? That you read?”, he asks, trying very hard not to keep chewing on his bottom lip again.
Adaine gives him a smile that makes warmth spread all through his body.
“Sure. I can lend you the book”, Adaine says and gets up from the bed, hands Boggy back to Riz and goes over to one of her numerous bookshelves to pull a small, purple book out from the top row.
“It’s really interesting, from a strictly scientific standpoint, you know”, she says as she hands it to him. Riz looks down at the book. A whole book. Just about feeling weird about dating and sex. His mom was right after all.
“Thanks”, he croaks and blinks rapidly.
“I’m really glad there’s at least one other person who isn’t so terribly horny all the time”, Adaine says and Riz looks up at her, his heart twice its normal size.
 “Yeah. Me too.”

Discussing Tenten’s Sexuality
As a personal policy, I abstain from concretely assigning sexual preferences to any fictional character unless it’s clearly stated by the author or discussed within the text.
Instead, let’s take a look at what content there is within the Narutoverse that addresses how Tenten experiences attraction and her thoughts on romance.
Tenten as a Lesbian:
In Japanese anime, WLW and lesbians have a specific coding: It’s either stated/shown that they’re gay, or they’re considered ‘not.’ When you look at characters such as Michiru/Haruko from Sailor Moon, Ymir/Christa from AOT, or Chizuru from Bleach, it’s very clear to the audience that they’re lesbians. Sailor Moon declares Michi/Haru a couple, Ymir/Christa was confirmed by the author, and Chizuru is open about her orientation.
Now, I consider Chizuru a terrible representation for Lesbians–she’s written to be predatory and sexually harasses another female character (Orihime) for fanservice. While this trope needs to die, it’s par for course with shounen anime–an anime genre that caters mostly to Japanese men. Naruto does this with Naruto’s girl-on-girl sexy-no-jutsu. Kishi is not exempt from utilizing this troupe. Sadly, almost any WLW indicators within shounen will be written out as fanservice for the audience–just as Kishi does.
Ymir/Christa from AOT are the exceptions to this rule, but they were confirmed outside-of-text. In comparison, Kishi has neither confirmed her sexuality nor given Tenten a female partner (…or any partner.)
Shounen anime, as a general rule, will not waste time with implicature about certain characters unless it’s directly tied to the plot. This means that because romance is not the focus of an anime such as Naruto, preferences, sexualities, and pairings will be made clear to the audience.
In addition, Tenten has shown (brief) attraction to men early in her appearances in Naruto chapters 35 and 65.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it is indeed the experience of many young WLW to “perform” heteronormativity, I don’t credit Kishi enough to assume he has that intricate of a vision for Tenten–or, more importantly, that he understands enough about WLW experience to write it. He merely understands that WLW exist for fanservice.
**It is important to note that Tenten only comments on Sasuke/Kakashi’s appearances, not on her romantic desire in them. I’ll revisit this later.**
To summarize, Tenten is not coded as a lesbian and shows an interest in men. It’s also highly unlikely Kishi ever wrote her with the intent to be one.
Tenten as Ace/Asexual/Aromantic:
This is where it gets interesting. For what little representation there is of true LGBTQA+ in anime (and not as stereotypes), asexuality is only represented as the “absence of..” romance. This is because Japan does not have a formal (or favorable) view of Aro/Ace as an orientation.
There’s a gender-based stereotype on the sexuality within Japan that only applies towards men. Japanese men will be referred to as Soshoku danshi, or “herbivore men” if they are disinterested in romance and marriage. As you can imagine, it’s not a particularly nice stereotype either, often used in conjunction with the equally unpleasant term, NEET. For women, there exists a partner term: Nikushoku joshi, or “carnivorous women.” This refers to romantically aggressive women and is seen as an unflattering quality. Women do not have an equivalent term for “herbivore” to my present knowledge.
Aro/Ace has also never been explicitly stated in any anime/manga I’ve encountered. It’s not a heavily researched topic in Japan, and the absence of attraction is usually seen as the result of a personal “defect”. For more detailed information on Aromanticism and asexuality in Japan, I recommend this essay.
Now back to Tenten: Yes, she’s shown interest in the appearance of men. This is very different from Sakura/Ino/Hinata/Karin…and every other depiction of a crush in the Naruto anime. Post-Chapter 65, Tenten was never portrayed in any sort of romantic light. The next mention of Tenten’s romantic preferences finally came from Konoha Hiden. I’ve mentioned Hiden here, but here’s some further explanation:
Konoha Hiden: Chapter 2
“Ever since last night, for some reason or another, thoughts like that kept circling around her head. Something was nagging at her. What was bothering her? The truth was, she already knew the answer.
“Marriage, huh…well it’s a nice thing…” Tenten exhaled, leaning against one of the stakes. Her hands silently played with one of the kunai she’d collected.
This was what had been bothering her. Naruto and Hinata were getting married. It was a happy occasion. Tenten herself had always been getting caught up in thinking about shuriken or kunai or flying guillotines, so she’d never had a boyfriend. She lived her life without any thoughts for romance or femininity.
Hearing about someone close to her getting married suddenly made one disturbing thought fly into Tenten’s mind and refuse to leave: Was it really okay for her to be like this?
From morning until night, it was always Ninja Weaponry, Ninja Weaponry, Ninja Weaponry… Was it really okay for a young woman to be like that?”
The text explicitly discusses Tenten’s thoughts on romance. She’s disinterested in relationships and instead wants to pursue her interest in weaponry. Tenten is also deeply concerned with others’ perceptions of her.
To be clear: when Tenten says “…to be like this?” She is not talking about her interest in weapons. Tenten is discussing her lack of interest in romance. This phrase is juxtaposed against her comments about marriage, not weapons.
This all falls heavily in line with the would-be Japanese depiction of “Aromantic.” Tenten knows that she prefers weapons over boys and never had “any thoughts for romance or femininity.” She also knows this is out of the norm (especially for women), and is concerned as to how people might view her–which is exactly the Japanese attitude towards aromanticism.
My reservations about labeling characters aside, there’s probably a solid argument that can be made for Tenten as an aromantic character. She seems to have a preference for men, though she is completely disinterested in a relationship. I do not believe Kishimoto would use the term “aromantic.” to describe her due to different cultural understandings.
And as for me, I don’t mind however someone defines her sexuality, so long as--if they're making claims about Tenten's canon--they keep her in character. And for Tenten, part of being in-character means being single. The female characters of Naruto were strongly defined by romance–whether we like it or not. Tenten is the glaring exception insofar as her explicit “absence of..” romance/attraction. Ignoring this essential fact about Tenten is the same as ignoring Hinata’s crush on Naruto, or Sakura/Karin’s crushes on Sasuke. You can change a personality in fandom, but you can’t use [the changed personality] to say what canonically “is” or “isn’t” true about the character.
[Edit] Interpreting her scenes with her teammates as romantic at all is flat-out false and bad analysis. I want people to stop portraying their shipping desires as "analysis" of this series. All female characters with romantic interests had their interests explicitly made. Shounen–a genre that caters towards men–does NOT cut corners with portraying romantic attraction BECAUSE it is NOT the focus. They WILL NOT waste time with implicature. Kishimoto was never adverse to denoting which female character liked whom. All of the girls' crushes were obvious. The fact that Konoha Hiden was published was, in fact, Kishimoto's final say on the matter: Tenten was never a romantic character. She never held feelings for her teammates. This book was published with this EXPLICITLY said because, again, Kishimoto does not write romance. He says they either like or do not like each other and moves on. Why in the WORLD would he allude to some "great, hidden romance" of Tenten? He would–did not. He is NOT that kind of writer.
Fanon does what it wants, but that goes without saying.
When I write Tenten for Reader-Insert, I fully acknowledge that I have to make her OOC for it. She’s also the most difficult to write for because of this. I use the collective experiences of real-life friends who are aromantic and in a relationship to form her “romantic” side.
Thanks as always for contributing to the blog!

US & THEM. | monica@pentagrams
oo1. what type of body do you find to be the most attractive on your prefered sex? >> ---
oo2. do you have synesthesia? what kind? what’s it like? >> Nah. I’ve always thought synaesthesia just kind of makes sense, though. Like, if you told me you experienced numbers as colours, I’d be like “well, yeah, that sounds about right”. Cross-sense experience just... makes sense.
oo3. do you call yourself a feminist? if no, why not? >> I don’t call myself a feminist because I’m not interested in the label. I don’t care about signalling a certain kind of morality to anyone. --I’m not at all saying that’s what other people are doing when they call themselves feminists or whatever, I’m saying this is what it would feel like to me if I were to do it, personally.
oo4. for the most part, we’ve all been bullied. but have you ever done the bullying? who did you bully, and what about? why did you do it? >> That’s an interesting assumption to make. But anyway, no, I’ve never been a bully.
oo5. when’s the last time you went shopping for clothing? what did you get? >> I don’t remember the last time I went shopping for anything other than groceries, to be honest. The few clothes I’ve purchased recently were purchased online.
oo6. when you hear of a tragedy going on (be it in your area or not), do you feel a lot of compassion or are you jaded about all tragedies that happen unless it affects you personally somehow? >> “Jaded” isn’t really the word I would use; that implies that I developed some kind of desensitisation, which in turn implies I was once sensitive to it in the first place. I just innately don’t have any emotional response to the majority of things that happen in the world, unless they affect me personally somehow. I don’t understand why that’s so off-putting to other people, as if I said I’d gleefully dance on their grave if they died or something. Maybe it’s a CEN or cPTSD thing. Maybe it’s a neurodivergence thing. I don’t fucking know, but that’s the way it is, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise just to make other people comfortable.
oo7. do you find the thought of aliens comforting, disturbing, or something else entirely? >> I find the thought intriguing, and that’s about it.
oo8. what is something (movie, band, trend, etc) that everyone hates that you love? do you openly admit to liking it or do you just keep it to yourself? >> When I was a teenager, my favourite band was Creed, and let me tell you how awful that was for me. It’s almost like I was asking to get teased. That aside, there will always be things I enjoy that are unpopular to enjoy, and that’s fine. I’m still going to like it.
oo9. who’s your least favorite character in your favorite tv show? why? >> I don’t usually have least-favourite characters.
o1o. would you ever be comfortable being in a polyamorous relationship, personally? why or why not? >> I am only comfortable in non-monogamous relationships. Because they only make sense, for me -- I’m aromantic and asexual, so there’s a lot of stuff I don’t bring to relationships, and I don’t see why my partner shouldn’t be able to seek that stuff elsewhere, without having to feel bad about it. That doesn’t somehow negate the bond we have, which is unique in its own right (if it wasn’t, then there’d be no reason for us to be together in the first place...). Likewise, I wouldn’t want my own relationship options restricted either -- it’s just less likely to happen on my end, for obvious reasons. Also, I experience compersion -- I feel good when I see my partner having good relational experiences with other people, as opposed to feeling jealous or neglected (unless, of course, I am being neglected, which would definitely be a glaring red flag).
o11. when you were a kid, did you read v.c. andrews books? do you still read them? which was/is your favorite? if you have never read them, what did you like to read as a child? >> I didn’t read them as a kid. I finally read Flowers in the Attic like a year ago, actually. It was pretty interesting, and maybe I’ll check out some others later on. I’m always interested in stories about unhealthy familial relationship dynamics like that, probably because it’s a cathartic way for me to process my own experiential bullshit.
o12. what is a common misconception people have about you? >> I’m not sure.
o13. would you list some unpopular opinions you hold? >> I feel like every time I take a survey I end up giving some kind of unpopular viewpoint as an answer somewhere. Like in the polyamory question, or when I say that maybe people should be less insulting to other people, especially when they know nothing about them except that they did something you wouldn’t do.
o14. do you think that assisted suicide should be legal or illegal? why? >> I am in favour of it. I just am. I don’t have any concrete fact-based reasons to have this opinion, it’s just something I knee-jerk approve of based upon how I feel about death and dignity and personal agency.
o15. what was the cause of the charity (or anything of the sort) you last donated to? >> Technically, I donated to the ACLU when I bought that huge games bundle from off Itch.io for 6 bucks.
o16. when it comes to technology, what matters more to you: aesthetic or efficiency? >> Efficiency is prioritised, but if two machines are equally efficient and one’s ugly to me, I’m definitely not buying that one.
o17. where do you lie on the spectrum of theistic probability? it is a scale that goes from 1 to 7. 1 means you ‘know’ there is a god, 7 means you ‘know’ there isn’t. if you don’t mind talking about it, would you explain your beliefs? >> I don’t think it would be fair to my complex views and feelings to rate myself on a spectrum. I think I encompass a large portion of the spectrum, actually. I’m open to the realm of possibilities, and I have a lot of feelings about, like, the Platonic concepts of Ideas and the Nous and Daimones and shit like that, and also how religiosity affects humanity, and... man, I’m just really into that shit, okay, I don’t know what else to say. So I might not be directly religious, but religiosity definitely permeates my life.
o18. how much do material items mean to you? >> The material items I own are significant to me, because they’re mine and they enrich my life in some sense -- either by keeping me clothed and comfortable or by enabling me to connect to the internet or by just looking nice on my wall. I prefer not to take it any farther than that -- ultimately, stuff is still just stuff. But I’m not going to pretend that I don’t attribute any value at all to what I own.
o19. how do you keep your cool when you get angry? >> I just prefer to avoid getting angry. I’m not confident that I can manage myself well at that level of emotionality.
o2o. do you swear? why or why not? if you do, what do you think of people who don’t? if you don’t, what do you think of people who do? >> Yeah. Because it’s a part of language and I find it useful. I don’t care what other people do -- not swearing is a personal choice and I respect it, and if someone prefers that I don’t swear around them (or their kids or whatever), then I’ll oblige. Otherwise, whatever.

1. Tell us about your WIP!Currently I’m working on a lesbian romance novel about two girls in college, one is a double majoring in business and english education, the other doublemajors in computer science and astrophysics (the college she goes to doesn’t do“rocket science” or aeronautical engineering, so this is probably as close asshe’s going to get for programing rockets and theoretical space flightpaths/devices). The other major part of the story is that the MC (the rocketscientist) is searching for her missing brother at the same time.
3. What is your favorite/least favorite part aboutwriting? My favorite part about writing is that moment hen someone tells me eitherthat they like my writing or gives me some kind of critique/encouragement (yes,I actually like receiving constructive criticism). My least favorite part aboutwriting is trying find people to give that critique/trying to stay focusedenough to actually finish a story.
5. Top five formative books?I don’t know what this means but the books I read as a child that made mewant to write were: 1. The Magic Treehouse Series 2. Molly Moon’s IncredibleBook of Hypnotism 3. Bloody Jack 4. The Tale-Tell Heart (and other Edgar AllenPoe things) 5. The Little Princebooks that shaped my writing style/preferences though were 1. Molly Moon’sIncredible Book of Hypnotism 2. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witchof the West 3. Welcome to Night Vale: The Novel 4. The Hitchhiker’s Guide tothe Galaxy 5. Martin the Warrior
6. Favorite character you’ve written?Fandom: Sera, Leliana, Josephine, Cole (Dragon Age), Jack, Liara, Peebee (MassEffect), Pharah (overwatch), Raven (Teen Titans), Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)Original: Cassandra Tesla (the MC of the wip from question 1), Scion, Xia,Sage, Ruka, and Nvros
8. Do you have anywriting buddies or critique partners? yes! @wardenpharah @snowstorm-thirteen @uswhovianswillholdasiton and acouple others who I mostly talk to on discord
9. Favorite/leastfavorite tropes? Favorite: I don’t know trope names, but there’s trope that I didn’t know was atrope until I came across it in a few fics and a podcast where basicallysomeone is separated from their spouse and when they meet back up with themthey’re like “I missed you so much! Btw I kind of accidentally adopted thiskid/[wayward character]”; that trope “remove your weapons” *pulls a ridiculousamount of weapons out of nowhere* “ALL of them” *reluctantly hands over one ortwo more*; “will this work?” “I have no idea” *thing explodes* “was it supposedto do that?” “I don’t know but it was awesome!”Least favorite: that trope where they destroy the MCs hometown/house/familyjust so the MC has nothing tying them back to where they began and then proceedto do absolutely nothing with that plotwise and it affects nothing but gettingthe MC to actually leave their town
10. Pick an author(or writing friend) to co-write a book with@snowstorm-thirteen or @wardenpharah or one of my new friends from discordwhose tumblr I’ve forgotten
12. Which story ofyours do you like best? why? Original Works: either Light in the Dark or The Forgotten Realm of Dreams orThe Invisibles, because they’re all really really gay and really really nerdyFanfic: Is This Home Yet is without a doubt my best work ever. I’m consideringrewriting it as a novel. Wouldn’t be hard because the only thing making it afanfic and not an original work is that I used the two mcs to basically justget more attention.
13. Describe yourwriting processIt tends to be: sit down, open a notebook/grab paper/open scrivener/word/googledocs, stare at the page, start writing, erase things, write different things, listen to music, check tumblr, write more, somehow things get done or they don’tget done.
15. How do you dealwith self-doubt when writing? look at paper, say “I hate this”, cry, complain to anyone who will listen, stop writing for however long that takes, go back to writing, say “this is bad”,complain more, talk shit out, then it branches: if feel better, keep writing! Ifnot, stop writing and play video games then come back to writing two or threedays later!
16. Cover love/dreamcovers? I love me some good book covers, but professional ones are expensive orrequire talent that I do not have. Light in the Dark would be good with eithera mysterious cover, cover with a bunch of letters and envelopes, a soft gaycover with two girls that fit Cass and Ruka’s descriptions, or a cover that’s likethe soft gay cover but with space and video games/a computer incorporated intoit.
17. What things(scenes/topics/character types) are you most comfortable writing? scenes: anything not smut or fightingtopics: I’m comfortable writing about anything except incest/ddlg|mmlb/anythingthat falls in the realm of ‘not my thing to talk about’ (ie. I will write transcharacters, but not specifically about trans issues—nonbinary/agender issuesthough I will; I’ll write mlm characters but not specifically about theirissues; I’ll write poc or religious characters but I won’t write specificallyabout the issues that they face-without a lot of research and talking to peopleand such—because it’s just not my place. To explain a bit, I mean that I’llwrite characters that are not like me, and will do research to make sure I don’taccidentally do that in an offensive manner, but I won’t tell their stories forthem because I am not them. I hope this makes sense.)character types: women or nonbinary individuals, rebels, nerds, autistics, abuse victims/survivors, lesbians, ace people, the secretly nerdy femme, thesecretly nerdy butch, the secretly nerdy anyone, the tough girl who likes soft things, the soft girl who will kick your ass, thereptile person (person who likes reptiles), pirate, scientist, explorer, ectthere’s a lot of character types I love to write
25. What’s yourworldbuilding process like? this deserves its own post
21. What aspect ofyour writing are you most proud of? characterization
22. Tell us about thebooks on your “to write” listmost of them are in some way all part of the same series, but not necessarilyconnected, and not necessarily linearly or direct successors. Some/most can be stand-alonethat just happen to take place in the same universe as the others
27. Every writer’sleast favorite question - where does your inspiration come from? Do you docertain things to make yourself more inspired? Is it easy for you to come upwith story ideas?Dreams. Most if not all my story inspiration and ideas come from dreams, therest come from songs or random thoughts that just get stuck in my head. To getmore inspired I play games, bounce ideas off my friends, listen to music, orsleep. It’s fairly easy for me to come up with ideas, almost as easy as comingup with characters *shoves my like 300 ocs into the closet*
28. How do you stayfocused on your own work and how do you deal with comparison?I don’t focus, that’s the problem that’s why there’s so much unfinished shit onmy ao3. Tbh I’m usually the one doing the comparing and I deal with it bylearning from the work I’m comparing mine to and improving.
30. Do you like toread books similar to your project while you’re drafting or do you stick tonon-fiction/un-similar works?I don’t read. I can’t focus long enough to read. Instead I play video games inthe same genre or daydream or occasionally relisten to the Welcome To NightVale novel audiobook. I’m starting to branch out and try to find otheraudiobooks to listen to, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a pretty goodone on Audio.
33. What’s yourrevision/rewriting process like?draft one on one side of the screen, draft two on the other side of thescreen and literally rewriting draft one in draft 2. Sometimes I’ll rewrite onthe same document using markups like strikethrough instead of deleting thingsand other colors for the new additions, also lots and lots of sleeping andcrying, and soda (I don’t drink coffee).
34. Unpopular writingthoughts/opinions? Ernest Hemmingway sucks. He’s a terrible writer and you should not aspire towrite like him nor should you look up to him. Said is a perfectly valid word. The Oxford Comma is required not optional. Adverbs are not bad, use them if youwant. First person is a valid form to write in. Parenthetical asides (likethis) are just as valid as hyphenated asides—like this—and should be used if itfits the story/narration style. If your pov character doesn’t understand theforeign language the other character is speaking, putting the words in theother language in the text with a footnote translation is just as valid as “hesaid something in [language] but MC didn’t understand it.” Stalking is notromantic. Unhappy endings do not belong in the romance genre. Your charactercan be gay without complaining about it or it making their life hard. You canhave more than one minority character! You characters never going to thebathroom is unrealistic. Mosquitoes are a thing and if your character isoutside in the summer they had better damn well be protecting themselvesagainst them or slapping at at least one. A romance story with a character whowon’t take no for an answer, who isn’tthe antagonist/big (or little) bad, is not romantic. A romance story where thecharacters kiss or have sex when one of them clearly doesn’t want to, is notromantic. BOTH characters in your romance story need to change by the end ofthe story, that’s just good characterization. You can have polyamorouscharacters, but we are not a kink/fetish, if you don’t actually support actualpolyamorous people in real life don’t write about us in your fiction it’sdisrespectful and you’re probably going to do it wrong. Cheating is notromantic. Asexuals exist, Aromantics exist, Bisexuals exist. Romance doesn’tneed sex. … I’ll stop now, I have a lot of things I could say here.
35. Post the lastsentence you wroteShe blinked them back, willing herself not to cry.
36. Post a snippetCassandra had never been one for plans, if she had she might have actuallytalked with her roommate before move-inday. Even so, despite not planning things much, she did have goals. Her goal onmove-in day was simple: move in, preferably alone. She’d been under theimpression that she was the first one to arrive and that her roommate wouldn’tbe coming until later in the day. So, it was a shock to her when she arrived ather dorm room and found it was already open. She tapped her foot against the doorto get the attention of whoever was inside the room. She couldn’t quite see whomight be in there through the boxes that she was carrying.
“I hope you don’t mind,” a soft voice from inside the roomsaid, “it’s just that it was easier to leave the door open than to have to keepunlocking it.”
Cassandra tilted her head as she walked into the room, lowering the boxes just enough to see over them as she did so. “It’s notrouble,” she replied. “Who are you?”
The girl she was addressing, that she assumed was herroommate, was probably the most delicate looking girl she’d ever seen—wearing alight blue sundress with a ribbon around her waist and matching Mary Janes. Inher mind, the girl gave the impression of the enchanted rose from Beauty and the Beast; almost more likean idea than a person. She had long dark blonde—or was it light brown—hair withfaint, but still visible, red and dark brown streaks running through it, asthough it contained a fire within its French braid. Her smile was soft, barelyeven visible, and she looked like she might have played a sport in highschool—probably archery or fencing. Her brown eyes sparkled in the light fromthe window, like a stone of topaz against a blanket of snow. Never in her life, had Cassandra ever seen a girl that made her wonder if she was staring, but shehad now.
37. Do you ever writelong handed or do you prefer to type everything?100% depends on the story, and the day, and whether or not my eyes hurt.Sometimes ideas flow better on paper, sometimes typed, sometimes they flowbetter when I talk them out those days are bad for writing but good for gettingideas.
42. How many draftsdo you usually write before you feel satisfied? 100% depends on if it’s original work or fanfiction. Original works I’m usuallynot satisfied even after 6, 7, or even 10 drafts. Fanfiction, sometimes I justpost up the first draft without caring, sometimes I’m more satisfied with a seconddraft. It usually doesn’t go beyond that.
48. Do you prefer towrite skimpy drafts and flesh them out later, or write too much and cut itback?I just write. Usually my second draft is longer and more detailed than thefirst, and by the 5th or 6th everything has changedbecause of added or removed details.
51. Are you asecretive writer or do you talk with your friends about your books?I don’t shut up about my writing, not with my friends.
52. Who do you writefor? Myself., or anyone who pays me.
54. Favorite firstline/opening you’ve written? Absolutely nothing could go wrong, she thought just exactly as everythingwent wrong.
50. Do you share yourrough drafts or do you wait until everything is all polished?I share them, if I waited until they were polished no one would ever get toread them
55. How do you manageyour time/make time for writing? (do you set aside time to write every day ordo you only write when you have a lot of free time?) I have no job and no life. 0/10 do not recommend my method of having writingtime
