A Tale of Two McCarthys

Abdul El-Sayed has an article in TNR about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' latest endeavor to stake out anti-vaxx turf, promising a full-scale legal investigation into "any and all wrongdoing in Florida with respect to Covid-19 vaccines." El-Sayed dubs DeSantis' strategy "vaccine McCarthyism", which is a term I appreciate. After all, is not today's GOP little more than equal shares of Joseph and Jenny McCarthy?

I tend to think that anti-vaxx politics are a trap for the GOP. Yes, anti-vaxx views are passionately held by the conspiratorial Republican base, which means that under the God-given rules of media fairness we must treat that position with the utmost seriousness. But anti-vaxx politics remain broadly unpopular even with Republicans, to say nothing of independents (or Democrats). Much like (either) McCarthy, opposing vaccines may gain DeSantis press and clout for a little while, but it's likely to make him an irrelevant laughingstock in the long term.

You had me at old Egyptian movies. Abdul haleem hafez holds a special place in my heart. My mum brought me up on abdel haleem and the Beatles. It couldn’t get better than that. I memorized his 13 minute live songs by heart. To be very honest though I just never vibed with Lebanese pop…especially the newish ones and I include, Haifa, Nancy, elyssa. The 90s one however we’re sooooo much better.

It’s so funny that you say that about the Lebanese accent (every dialect of it) because all my life I’ve said that we are the valley girls of the Arabic language. We sound so trashy when compared to others. I used to wish I had the Egyptian accent because it was like the “British” equivalent 😂 I’d try to speak it but I failed so bad!

For fairuz, I love your choice but I’d have to go with “biktob ismak ya Habibi”. I hear the melody and Im immediately transported to an old traditional Lebanese cafe having breakfast. Phenomenal. She is not just a musician, she’s truly an emotion.

Anyway this has been so fun! I’ve moved away 4 years ago so it was good to reminisce. Thanks for the ride!

Same with my grandpa alah yerhamo had so many cassettes of him, he was quite keen on Egyptian music oldies, I mean he was an oldie 😂 he even named my aunt Chadia after Shadia, and he was so in love Mayada El Hennawy I understood why, a voice and a face of an angel ahhahahah. Truly the whole Egyptian artistic scene and culture is magical

Also about fairuz gosh yes 😭 that line "byehko anak ya habibi w ana bentassa" from the song is just so.... She truly taught me the sound of love, I'd love to visit an old Lebanese cafe some day!

The reason why the reporter asked him again because 1) she was caught off guard with his answer, not thinking Abdul Aziz will answer the way he did and 2) she wanted him to elaborate his answer but really that is the answer honestly what else is there more to say? His answer stays:"Zay el Khara!"

MARKET BUZZ: Palm Oil Prices May Correct More, Underweight On Malaysia Plays-CGS-CIMB KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 6) -- Palm oil prices may correct further in 2024 as supply concerns ease, says CGS-CIMB flags and tips investors to remain Underweight on Malaysian plantation sector. House forecasts average crude palm oil prices per ton at MYR3,800 for 2023 and MYR3,700 for 2024 in absence of material supply shocks. "We believe it would be difficult for CPO to trade significantly above MYR4,000 levels for an extended period in the future," writes analyst Afifah Abdul Malek. Notes, El-Nino weather conditions turned out to be less severe and shorter-than expected, and production will likely come in at 18.6 million tons in 2023 and 19.2 million tons in 2024. In terms of earnings, house expects 48% decline in aggregate sector core net profit in 2023 before recovering 29% and 10% in 2024 and 2025 driven by lower production costs following decline in global fertilizer prices. Benchmark palm oil futures for February delivery now at MYR3,693.

GADDAFI

Most libyans lived in an impoverished state. Their ruler pro west King Idris The First was a highly corrupt man. An army officer aged 27 Muammar Gaddafi, while the ruler was away for treatment at Turkey, staged a coup detat which didn't suffer much resistance (Operation Jerusalem). He built many schools, hospitals, infrastructure with the oil money flowing in the country.

Gaddafi's ideological father figure was Gamal Abdul Nasser. On Nasser's death, he saw it as an opportunity to take over. The Palestinian group responsible for 1972 Munich Olympic killings was Black September which was funded by Gaddafi. The terrorist bodies were brought by flights to Libya and the terrorists later freed were also brought to Libya to demonstrate Gaddafi's power.

Gaddafi funded Nelson Mandela because he knew that with the size of his population (6M), he could hardly have a say in geopolitics. Gaddafi funded many terrorist and rebel groups like IRA(Irish Republican Army), various groups in Germany, Italy.

He writes a book which was introduced in schools. Gaddafi declares himself a brother leader not a head of state. He had a vast police network so nobody dared say or goagainst him. He orders execution of a person in front of a whole crowd including bunch on 6 yo's. Gaddafi made sure that his assassinations were done in public.

The US navy in 1986 was performing naval training in Mediterranean Sea as they had before . Gaddafi threatened the Us but Us retaliated saying it was training on international waters. Libya fired 6 missiles. America destroyed 3 Libyan petrol carriers and 1 missile installation.

A bomb explodes in The American place, a club in Germany, where Us soldiers used to hang out. 2 serviceman killed. Gaddafi's house is flattened. Gaddafi escapes unharmed but he claims his adopted daughter wasn't so lucky (Operation el dorado). Earned sympathy.

A passengers plane is blown up which crashes in Scotland and caused 270 deaths. 4 years later, investigation revealed 2 libyan agents planted the bomb. Oil sanctions were imposed on Libya. Gaddafi's former foreign minister who had turned against him was now kidnapped by his men. He keeps him in his freezer.

Gaddafi invented more ludicrous titles for him such as Imam of all Muslims, Dean of Arab Rulers, King of African Rulers. His attention seeking tendency made him wear absurd flamboyant clothes. His billboards were everywhere. He set up a guard made up entirely of women called Amazonian Guards (Revolutionary Nuns)which had several beauty standards to be eligible. These women to became a part of his harem. Wives and daughters of various critics of Gaddafi were picked up and violated to humiliate them.

Gaddafi condemned 9/11, put out an arrest warrant for Osama and offered to donate blood to victims. Libya ties with West are resurrected.

In 2011,the Arab spring started. The revolts are crushed by Gaddafi. NATO comes out in support of the Libyan opposition and air strike Gaddafi's forces. By Oct 11,he's fleeing from city to city. After 42 years, Gaddafi's reign is over. The 2011 revolution has quickly turned in a civil war. The country is still struggling.

The Associated Press: In Lebanon, boat tragedy kills 94 but others plan to migrate

NAHR EL-BARED, Lebanon (AP) — Thousands of Palestinians held prayers on a small soccer field in a refugee camp in northern Lebanon on Saturday, to mourn one of the scores of migrants who died after their boat sank off Syria’s coast this week, even as others vowed to undertake the same perilous voyage.

Abdul-Al Abdul-Al, 24, kissed his father goodbye Tuesday before boarding a crowded boat leaving from a nearby town seeking a better life in Europe. It was his 14th attempt to flee the crisis-hit Mediterranean country, this time ending with the return of his dead body. He was to be buried in the camp where he was born, his father, Omar, told The Associated Press during the funeral procession.

The death toll rose Saturday evening to 94 after several bodies were found on the coast by the town of Banyas, according to Syrian state TV.

Earlier in the day, the head of al-Basel Hospital in Syria’s coastal city of Tartus said that the death toll has reached 89, adding that of the 20 others who were receiving treatment at the medical center, six were discharged.

The Lebanese army announced Saturday that troops have detained the man who allegedly organized the deadly trip.

The incident was the deadliest so far as a surging number of Lebanese, Syrians, and Palestinians have been trying to flee Lebanon by sea to Europe in search of jobs and stability. In Lebanon, tens of thousands have lost their jobs while the the national currency has dropped more than 90% in value, eradicating the purchasing power of thousands of families and pulling three-quarters of the population into poverty.

Alongside 1 million Syrian refugees, the small country of Lebanon is home to tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees and their descendants. Many live in the dozen refugee camps that are scattered around the country. Palestinians suffer wide discrimination in Lebanon where they are deprived from doing specific jobs or own property and since the end of the 1975-90 civil war many have migrated.

After noon prayers were held at Nahr el-Bared, hundreds of people gathered in a yard used to play football where Abdul-Al’s coffin was placed in the middle. Prayers were held before the body was carried to a nearby cemetery where thousands of people had gathered to witness the young man being laid to rest.

Omar Abdul-Al said that his son had tried to leave Lebanon before but did not succeed as sometimes the migrant boats he took had technical problems or faced high seas. Sometimes he had to swim back to shore, the man said.

“We don’t want to live here anymore. We want to leave,” said Omar Abdul-Al, adding that he encouraged his late son to leave and now he is encouraging his four other sons to leave Lebanon. He added that his sons are all well educated but they cannot find jobs.

“We are passing through a severe crisis. There is no medication or bread or anything,” the father said. He added that many other Palestinians were planning to go on the boat but it did not fit more people.

Another relative of Abdul-Al screamed that “there is a disaster in Nahr el-Bared” saying that there are about 30 people missing from the camp who were on the boat. He said people are selling their homes and cars in order to go.

Several others have been buried since Friday.

There were conflicting reports on how many people were on board the boat when it sank, with some saying at least 120. Details about the ship, such as its size and capacity, were also not clear.

In the aftermath of the disaster, the Lebanese army said troops stormed Friday the homes of several suspected smugglers, detaining eight people involved in trafficking people abroad.

Residents in northern Lebanon say that people pay about $6,000 for an adult and $3,000 for a child to reach Europe.

At the morgue, Omar Abdel-Al said he found his son’s body “intact” though it was difficult to identify many of the dozens of other corpses kept there.

“Anyone that comes with a boat, people are ready to go,” he said.
