The closest international airport that doesn’t require Raneem to make the dangerous and expensive journey from the Houthi-controlled areas where she lives to those under the authority of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) is in the city of Sana’a. A Saudi-led military coalition, which includes the United States, bombed that airport multiple times during the war, and closed it to commercial flights. In April 2022, Saudi Arabia entered into a truce with the Houthis and, working with the United Arab Emirates, another country on the Saudi side of the war, established the PLC. This eight-member council came to power without an election, replacing President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. The United States now considers this the “internationally recognized government” of Yemen. The truce was supposed to reopen Sana’a airport to commercial air travel, a development that has been touted by the Biden administration as proof of progress in a humanitarian crisis for which the US bears considerable responsibility. But there are so few flights that the truce hasn’t changed anything for Raneem’s family. The PLC permits only three round-trip flights a week from Sana’a airport (down from six in June). They are all operated by a single airline, Yemenia Airways, which charges around $720 for a round-trip ticket to Jordan. (Yemenia is partially owned by the Saudi government.) [...] Of Yemen’s 30 million people, an estimated 80 percent “require some form of humanitarian or protection assistance,” according to the United Nations. [...] The PLC obtains its legitimacy and firepower from the Saudi-led military coalition that bombed Yemen for eight years, and imposed an aerial and naval blockade on the country. The Biden administration says that this blockade does not exist. “For one year, Yemenis have benefitted from a halt to airstrikes, regular civilian flights from Sana’a airport, enhanced and unrestricted humanitarian and food assistance, and the increased flow of fuel to northern Yemen,” said Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, in an April 2023 statement marking the first anniversary of the truce. And while some incremental improvements have been made, particularly with respect to fuel and food imports, they fall far short of meeting the needs of a country devastated by a war in which the Saudi-led coalition repeatedly targeted civilian infrastructure like mosques, schools, hospitals, and markets. Today, Yemen is the site of one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises: 21.6 million people need humanitarian assistance; 17 million are food insecure; and 2.2 million children under 5 need treatment for acute malnutrition, according to the World Food Programme.[...] According to the Health Ministry of Sana’a (where the Houthis are the dominant power), some 71,000 cancer patients and 8,000 kidney-failure patients need care outside of Yemen. In August 2019, the Norwegian Refugee Council, a humanitarian organization, reported that in the three years since Sana’a airport was closed to commercial flights (starting August 9, 2016), “as many as 32,000 people may have died prematurely because they were unable to travel abroad for treatment, according to the Ministry of Health in Sana’a.” The extremely limited United Nations mercy flights permitted to leave Sana’a airport in 2020 barely began to meet these needs. [...] There are other airports in Yemen that have international flights, but these are in areas that are under the control of the PLC. The biggest such airport is in Aden, but distances are far and expensive to traverse, and the travel comes with risk and hardship. For those who live in Houthi-controlled areas, which account for roughly two-thirds of Yemen’s population, traveling to airports in PLC territory may not be an option.[...]

Throughout the war, the Saudi-led coalition repeatedly bombed hospitals. (The United States provided arms, intelligence, training, maintenance, and political support for the coalition. While the Biden administration said it suspended support for “offensive” operations in 2021, the United States continued to send arms.) In November 2015, the International Committee of the Red Cross said that it was aware of “close to a hundred” incidents where the Saudi-led coalition attacked health-care facilities over an eight month period. In January 2016, an MSF-supported hospital in Razeh, in northern Yemen, was hit with a coalition projectile, killing six people. Another bombing of an MSF-operated hospital in Hajja province in August 2016 killed at least 11 people.[…]

“The health system in Yemen has completely collapsed,” he said. “Very few public hospitals are operational.”[…] Key materials used to treat cancer are either unavailable or in extremely limited supply. For example, Dr. Alhadi said radioactive iodine, commonly used to treat thyroid cancer, “is not widely available in Yemen due to the ongoing conflict and blockade.”[...]

The Health Ministry of Sana’a told us that radioactive iodine has been banned from import into Houthi-controlled areas.When we reached out to the State Department to confirm this ban and to request a full list of items that are prohibited from import, a spokesperson referred us to the United Nations Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) for Yemen.

UNVIM, which did not respond to a request for comment, is the UN inspection body tasked with facilitating the transport of non-humanitarian goods into Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen, by verifying that these goods do not violate United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216. That resolution, which was drafted by Saudi Arabia, places an arms embargo on the Houthis. Once UNVIM grants clearance, the “internationally recognized government of Yemen,” now the PLC, gets the final say over which goods can enter ports in Houthi-controlled areas.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have exerted considerable influence over the “internationally recognized government of Yemen” since this resolution was implemented at the start of the war. The resolution has been a key means these countries have used to impose the blockade, alongside the bombing of airports and ports, and the placement of Saudi warships in Yemeni waters.

Shireen Al-Adeimi is an academic and nonresident fellow at the Quincy Institute who has campaigned to end US support for the Saudi-led war and blockade. She said that, given the role of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in influencing the PLC, and given past coalition action to block humanitarian aid, this amounts to foreign control over what goes into and out of Yemen’s ports in these areas. “A blockade is an act of war,” she said.[...]

The war has been defined by a lack of accountability and transparency, including from the United States, a fact acknowledged by the US government’s own internal watchdog. A June 2022 report from the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that the departments of Defense and State “have not fully determined the extent to which US military support has contributed to civilian harm in Yemen.”[...]

There have been some reports that the United States may be “slow-walking” peace negotiations by introducing conditions for a deal. The Biden administration, meanwhile, has signaled that it remains a partner of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and in August 2022 approved $5 billion in total arms sales to both countries. This comes on top of at least $54.6 billion in military support to these countries from 2015 to 2021, according to the GAO.[...]

With a presidential campaign ramping up, Biden has an incentive to emphasize relief and openness in Yemen; the US role in the humanitarian crisis—including rolling out the red carpet for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last year, and ongoing weapons sales—goes against the president’s claims to embrace human rights as a foreign policy principle.

Ten years ago, Solomon Maina's daughter, Debora, was one of 276 schoolgirls kidnapped from their dormitory in the middle of the night by Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamist militants.

Global outrage was swift. A ubiquitous "Bring Back Our Girls" campaign, drawing support from the likes of Michelle Obama and Sylvester Stallone, shined a spotlight on the abductions. Then, in 2016 and 2017, negotiations led to the highly publicised liberation of around 100 of the captives. 

Debora was not one of them.

A decade after that fateful night in April 2014, the world has largely forgotten the plight of the so-called Chibok girls.

But for the victims and their families, the tragedy is ongoing.

"Especially at night, I think about my daughter," Maina, in tears, told Reuters in an interview at his home in Chibok, a Christian enclave in the West African nation's majority Muslim north. "I will never forget her."

Abductees who have returned home have struggled to resume their interrupted lives. Some are raising children fathered by their captors. Others have waited years for funds promised by the government to continue their education.

Those who spent the longest time in captivity have often had the most difficulty reintegrating with civilian life.

Dozens freed only in the past few years are living inside a military-run rehabilitation camp with surrendered Boko Haram fighters they married in the bush, according to the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, a charity that advocates for them. With them are more than 30 children.

"I'm tired of staying in the camp," one Chibok survivor told Reuters, asking not to be identified for fear of reprisals by the military. "I want to go home and stay with my family. There is no place like home."

Three of the surviving women told Reuters that in at least five cases women who arrived at the camp unmarried have been married to surrendered fighters once there. Government officials have officiated over such weddings, in an apparent effort to appease the surrendered fighters, family members say.

Aid groups and relatives say there is no clarity surrounding when - or even if - the women in the camp will be allowed to return home.

"They were brainwashed and their psychological thinking and mindset were changed to favour their abductors," said Dauda Yama whose daughter is inside the camp.

The state official in charge of the rehabilitation project did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Still missing

Roughly 90 Chibok girls are still missing. Based on the accounts of former abductees, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation believes a third of those have died in captivity.

"Some died of childbirth, some of starvation or snakebite others in government air strikes" against Boko Haram, said Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, the foundation's head. A parents association for the Chibok girls also estimates dozens are now dead.

Nigeria's president's office and the interior ministry did not respond to requests for comment on how many of the missing Chibok girls were believed to still be alive.

Early on, as the girls began emerging from captivity in the bush and their fate was still a rallying cause around the world, the government pledged to fund their studies in "any field of their choice."

Some liberated captives are attending universities as far afield as the United States. But some say the assistance never arrived.

Yagana Yamani waited for government funds for six years after escaping her captors. She finally asked her mother, a farmer, to help. Now 25, she is studying public health.

"They didn't fulfil their promise," she said.

The federal government did not respond to requests for comment on the question of whether it failed to provide promised support.

Nigeria's military has been fighting Boko Haram since 2009 in a conflict that killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 2 million.

While the group aims to topple Nigeria's government to establish a state based on its own interpretation of Islamic law, to many people around the world it is best known for the Chibok kidnapping.

Soon after the raid, then-President Goodluck Jonathan promised that the girls would be brought home. Solomon Maina feels he is alone grappling with his daughter's fate.

Through a freed abductee, he learned that Debora had been injured but survived a bombing raid on Boko Haram. He believes she's still out there, alive.

"Where is she now? Is she in a comfortable place?" he said.

"I think about this all the time."

I don’t know. There’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot. I tried to weave it into the story, but my readers don’t come to me for Bridgerton family history lessons, so —

Suffice to say, I left it out. 

But I don’t know. I just — I keep thinking about it.

Did you know my grandfather was stationed here at the end of World War II? He came here in ‘44, about a year before it all went shit for the Germans. And when it did, he was given the option to leave Vienna and immediately return to London. At the time, he hadn’t been home — hadn’t seen my gran — in over three years. They wrote hundreds of letters to each other during that time — all of which are stashed in a box at Aubrey Hall, in case you were wondering. But anyway…

When the war ended, as much as my grandfather wanted to go home and see my gran’s face again, he wrote to her and asked if she would be willing to wait a little while longer. If she could stand it if he stayed here. If he remained in Vienna while the allied forces first occupied the city — to continue carrying out his duty. 

She said yes. He stayed here another two years. He arrived back on English shores on April 6th, 1947. Two days later, they got married. They did at a courthouse, just the two of them together. Like they were the last two people in the world.

I, uh — I didn’t piece this all together through the letters alone. My dad actually told me about it a few weeks before he died. I remember asking him why granddad stayed in Vienna for so long after the war technically ended. How he could stand to stay away from the woman he seemed so desperate to return to.

I remember my dad telling me: “There are times when duty surmounts passion.” Which I didn’t understand. Mainly because I was eight and had no fucking clue what the word “surmounts” meant, but…

Now, I understand what he was trying to say. That duty and passion are separate. That my grandfather’s duty lied in war, while his passion lied with his love. That his duty went beyond his required deployment period. That he stayed in Vienna those extra two years because that’s what he felt was right, even if he would have preferred to go home and be with the love of his life. 

Now, I —

I think my dad was wrong. He described my grandfather’s duty to his country as passionless — as if it was something he had to do when he wanted to be elsewhere. But I’ve read my grandfather’s journals from that time, and he never wrote about his life like he was carrying the weight of the world on his back. He may have been homesick and distressed at times — it was a bloody war, for god’s sake. But he — he was also proud of what he was doing. He was fulfilled. He was not drowning in a lack of passion. 

I think we —

I think some people, at least, have multiple passions. Passions that are at war with one another. That make it impossible to achieve everything we want all at once. Some that beg us to go home, some that beg us to stay. 

I think my grandfather made a choice. I think he chose one passion for a while, and one forever. I think he knew that once they married, he wouldn’t be able to bear living without my nan ever again.

ML Production Timeline (Movie and Show)

Just a tool for reference to put things into perspective.

There was rumor of a Movie since 2016. It was at least in the script phase and people suspected it to be a live-action movie, before the project change hands and became a musical under Jeremy Zag. But even then, they were opting for a cinematographic Origins story as the Movie was meant to introduce new audiences to Ladybug and Chat Noir.

Also, once the Movie was in Jeremy's hands, it became independant from what was going on in the Show.

Series wise, Season 1 was being broadcasted from October 19 2015 to Octobre 30 2016 on TFOU. The Christmas Special which was a musical aired on December of that same year. And we got a year hiatus before Season 2 started airing.

Movie was officially announced in Sept 2018 (according to Wiki as the footnote lead me to nothing). One song that was initially included in the Movie -- The Wall Between Us -- got released toward the end of 2019. Around then, we started to hear rumors that the Movie would be in theater for the end of S5 while still telling the Origin story.

To give you an idea where in production the Show was at that time, Thomas made a tweet in July 5th 2018 revealing an episode titled Truth which was the name of the first of that season. And Qilin was inspired by what was going on with the Yellow Vests Protests which began in Nov 2018. Meaning that as we audience started to see on-screen S3 episodes on April 2019, the show writers were finishing wrapping up S4 if it wasn't the case already at that moment.

S5 started being written around late 2019 from what I could gathered. There was notably the Japan Tours 2020 conference given by the show writers in France where they are vaguely talking about an episode that would turn out to be Reunion (S5 Ep08) as they were answering a question about "meeting up past Holders".

Okay, here's a collection of three short clips from an episode of the Elis James/John Robins radio show I heard recently, episode 115 from April 2016. The first clip is from the podcast intro at the beginning, then one from near-ish to the end of the live radio show. Then one from the podcast outro, which is their Keep It Sessions Sessions, where John and Elis take turns picking a band that they love but can't play on the radio because it's not on the Radio X playlist, so they play a bit of one of their songs for the podcast.

So... is everyone reading this the same way as I am? I feel like I might be missing something, and I hope I am. Because it looks like what happened is John Robins was booked on a charity gig, but then Stewart Lee said he'd do that gig only if John Robins was kicked off the bill, and then they did kick John off because obviously Stewart Lee is going to bring in a lot more people than him. And fair enough if that's what happened, if the gig is for charity then the organizer (who in this case was Elis James) should be booking comedians based on who will sell the most tickets.

Fair enough on the organizer's part, I mean, I don't blame them. But what the fuck, Stewart? I'm really hoping I read that wrong, because that would be a really fucked up thing for Stewart Lee to have done.

The context, if anyone's wondering, is this routine from John Robins' 2014 stand-up show:

Obviously that was not a nice thing to say about Stewart Lee. But as John points out, Lee is the one who has claimed repeatedly that a comedian talking shit about another comedian on stage isn't personal, it's something he does in character and doesn't really mean any of it so no one should read anything into his actual personality about it. If Stewart Lee turned around and starting trying to retaliate in actual real life against the first person who did it back to him, that's not just being a colossal dick in one situation, that's invalidating his entire argument that what's said on stage can stay on stage and should be taken as just a joke and/or character. If Stewart Lee wants to start saying that actually that stuff does count in real life and should be taken personally, that opens a lot of other stuff.

I still think I must be missing something here, because that seems like too ridiculous a thing for everyone to have just been fine with. John Robins is being way too chill about it for that to be what happened. When Elis James got a Twitter verification checkmark before John did, John spent the entire episode and several minutes of several subsequent episodes constantly bringing that up. It is really weird that Elis James could kick him off a bill at the insistence of Stewart Lee, and John Robins would keep his on-air complaints to just a couple of little comments following the plugs for it and then one dig at Stewart Lee's music taste at the end (the clips I cut out for that audio file are the only references to it in the episode). So there are two options there, I guess. Either I've misread this and that's not what happened, or it turns out that John Robins does actually have a line past which a tension-causing subject is so tense that he'll refrain from constantly going on about it on air, and this is past that line. Because I can't imagine he's genuinely that chill about it, given that no normal person would be, and he is much less chill than a normal person.

One point in favour of the idea that I am reading the situation correctly: I do actually remember once having read, on some message board at some point last year while trying to look up something else, that Stewart Lee refused to appear at gigs with John Robins because he didn't like what John Robins had said about him in his stand-up. I tried to find that thing again today, but I couldn't find it. I just remember reading it, but I thought that just meant Stewart Lee avoided wherever John was. Not that he actually went around seeking gigs where John was already signing up and getting him kicked off of them.

You know, this does make that Tweet John Robins wrote about him more recently seem slightly more justified. John Robins wrote some Tweet a couple of years ago comparing Stewart Lee to Joseph McCarthy, and obviously Stewart Lee is not Joseph McCarthy, that was a stupid thing to say. But I can't blame John as much for thinking that way, if Stewart Lee has been going around using his considerable influence to get someone kicked off bills for talking badly about him. Specifically for doing the same thing that Stewart Lee does all the time and justifies by saying you can't hold stuff against him if he does it in character on stage. Fucking hell.

About 18 months ago I made a bunch of posts weighing in on the feud between Mark Watson and Frankie Boyle, giving my opinions as though that were a current issue and not something that happened in 2011, because I'd only just learned about it so it seemed current to me. Well, at least I'm getting slightly more recent with the comedian feuds on which I weigh in, moving from 2011 to 2015.

I'm quite annoyed about this, so as a slight lift to the mood, here's a clip of the next time they brought up that charity gig, in the following episode when it was still coming up so Elis plugged it again, just because it's a fairly adorable exchange:

The A-10 is retiring and the USAF has no replacement for approximate air support

The U.S. Air Force plans to retire its legendary A-10 Warthogs in the next five years and it is not yet clear how the service will be able to provide ground troops with the approximate level of air support that the A-10 brings to the fight.

Although Congress has prevented the U.S. Air Force (USAF) from retiring all or part of its A-10 fleet five times since 2014, lawmakers' opposition seems to be decreasing. The House version of the National Defense Authorization Tax Act of 2024 would allow the USAF to retire 42 A-10 jets, but would stop new cuts in the A-10 fleet until the service tells Congress how it plans to keep crews proficient in approximate air support using other aircraft.

“The U.S. Air Force has other aircraft that can carry out approximate air support missions, including F-16, F-15E, B-1 bombers, AC-130 helicopters and F-35 Joint Strike Fighters,” said Ann Stefanek, a spokeswoman for the USAF.

The USAF also recently announced that it will replace the A-10s at Moody Air Base in Georgia and Gowen Field ANG Base in Idaho with F-35s and F-16s, respectively, signaling that the service is advancing at full speed with its efforts to retire the A-10.

The precisely guided weapons allow all U.S. Air Force combat aircraft, including B-52 bombers and MQ-9 Reapers, to conduct approximate air support missions to troops on the ground, said U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General David Deptula, dean of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies Air Force Association think tank.

"It is imperative to understand that approximate air support, or CAS, is a MISSION and NOT an aircraft," Deptula wrote. "If you are a friendly force being attacked by enemy ground forces and the enemy forces are put out of action, the friendly force does not care about the origin of the weapons that put enemy forces out of action."

In recent years, U.S. Air Force officials have suggested that the F-35 could provide close air support to troops on the ground, albeit in a different way than the A-10.

“The F-35 will not carry out approximate air support missions in the same way as the A-10,” Frank Kendall III, then the Pentagon's chief procurement officer, told the Senate Armed Services Committee in April 2016. "He will do it very differently. The A-10 was designed to be low, slow and close to the targets it was engaging, relatively speaking. We will not use the F-35 in the same way as the A-10".

However, the Government Supervision Project, or POGO, discovered a U.S. Air Force memo that the service does not require any active, reserve or National Guard F-35 pilot to conduct approximate air support training.

In fact, the latest Memorandum of Tasks of the USAF Open Crew Program, which tells commanders what missions pilots should be trained to do and how many training sorties they need to do to be proficient in them, describes the approximate air support as a secondary mission that F-35 pilots should only be familiar with, according to POGO, a non-partisan surveillance group.

"Just to be clear: no F-35 pilot of any level of experience in any component of the Air Force is required to carry out a single approximate air support training mission in 2023 or 2024," Dan Grazier, a senior member of POGO's defense policy, wrote in a February report.

Outside its A-10 fleet, the U.S. Air Force does not have a single squad dedicated exclusively to providing close air support to the troops, said retired Air Force Colonel Derek Oaks, who led an A-10 squadron in Afghanistan.

The A-10's 30mm cannon allows you to attack targets up to 100 meters from American troops, much closer and more efficiently than other Air Force aircraft, said Oaks, who has almost 3,000 hours of flight time on Warthog.

Although the F-15, F-16 and other multifunctional aircraft can perform various types of missions that include close air support, they are not as effective as single mission aircraft such as the A-10, he said.

"As a CAS pilot, I made some air-to-air awareness, I would never say it was an air-to-air pilot, because it wasn't," Oaks said. "I understood the basic maneuvers of the fighter, but I would not speak or act as well as an F-15 guy or an F-22 guy, because they are the experts in this. I wasn't the specialist and I didn't want to be the specialist. That was their job."

Oaks added that although a surgeon can understand the work of an anesthesiologist very well, this does not mean that the surgeon should try to be an anesthesiologist.

Despite the U.S. Air Force's concern that the A-10 is too old and slow to survive against advanced Chinese air defenses, Oaks argues that Warthog would have some advantages over other U.S. aircraft in a war against China.

Not only can A-10s carry much more weapons than other U.S. Air Force combat aircraft, but they also burn fuel much more slowly than more modern fighters, so they would be much less dependent on air refuelers than the F-15Es, F-16s, or F-35s, Oaks said. The A-10 can also take off and land from small runways, and this would become invaluable if China destroyed large U.S. Air Force facilities.

With its large cannon, the A-10 could be used to destroy Chinese ships, he said.

“We could do the CAS in a contested environment, we would just have to approach it differently,” Oaks said. "You need to worry about e-war, you need to worry about air threats and there are experts who know how to do it. It's the same thing as Afghanistan, you're just employing different experts."

You’re right, you’re right, the fertilizer’s good— it wasn’t a gang of dullards came up with chucking a fish in the planting hole […]—yes, the magic dust our bodies become casts spells on the roots […] which is why a couple springs ago when first putting in my two bare root plum trees out back I took the jar which has become my father’s house, and lonely for him and hoping to coax him back for my mother as much as me, poured some of him in the planting holes and he dove in glad for the robust air, […] and good lord this year he was giddy at the first real fruit set and nestled into the 30 or 40 plums in the two trees, peering out from the sweet meat with his hands pressed against the purple skin like cathedral glass, and imagine his joy as the sun wizarded forth those abundant sugars and I plodded barefoot and prayerful at the first ripe plum’s swell and blush, almost weepy conjuring some surely ponderous verse to convey this bottomless grace, you know, oh father oh father kind of stuff, hundreds of hot air balloons filling the sky in my chest, replacing his intubated body listing like a boat keel side up, replacing the steady stream of water from the one eye which his brother wiped before removing the tube, keeping his hand on the forehead until the last wind in his body wandered off, while my brother wailed like an animal, and my mother said, weeping, it’s ok, it’s ok, you can go honey, at all of which my father guffawed by kicking from the first bite buckets of juice down my chin, staining one of my two button-down shirts, the salmon colored silk one, hollering there’s more of that! almost dancing now in the plum, in the tree, the way he did as a person, bent over and biting his lip and chucking the one hip out then the other with his elbows cocked and fists loosely made and eyes closed and mouth made trumpet when he knew he could make you happy just by being a little silly and sweet.

Peace Trail

We've been honoring the passing of Karl Wallinger, the guy behind the one man band World Party, all week in the Dollar Bin. On first blush Wallinger and Neil Young have little in common: Wallinger made white man pop music in the spirit of Prince and Lennon/McCartney; Neil Young has always made pop music in the spirit of Neil Young, and no one else.

And so the oddest and most bizare footnote I read about Wallinger this past week was that he was all set to open for Neil and Crazy Horse during the Weld tour in 1991 before World Party's record label cancelled the tour and ordered Karl back into the studio.

Wallinger was forever grumpy about it all; he never got such a chance again and he reasonably argued that it forever lost him the chance to make a new legion of US fans. I can get behind that statement: if my blissed-out next door neighbor had not been rocking World Party at the time I would not have known about the band at the point myself.

And when I saw Neil with the Horse that April for the very first time World Party was definitely not on stage. Nor were Sonic Youth, who famously opened many of that tour's shows. Rather I had to sit through a set from these losers:

Talk about posturing, muscle-bound charlatans. Yuck. Neil had a unique gift in that era for choosing terrible opening acts. Two years later I had to sit through Blind Melon sets two nights in a row.

I can't begin to tell you how disappointing this all is in retrospect. Truth be told, in April 1991 I was more into World Party (and Tom Petty) than Neil Young. Sure, I had Ragged Glory, but as I've written elsewhere, it was still kinda over my head.

But had I seen Karl preach Peace, Love and Prince on stage in 91 then seen Neil blow up the arena with Blowing in the Wind, complete with air raid sirens and Pancho's screaming, it would have been a top five musical experience of all time.

Plus, my famous brother wasn't there that night (he was 12 years old at that point and probably spent the night with a Great Brain novel, prepping for adolescence). Just imagine how wonderful it would be to have lorded World Party + Crazy Horse over him for the last 35 years. And, seeing as he's famous and about to drop his second Prairiewolf record and play a soon-to-be-sold-out gig in LA, I'm desperately short of things to lord over him.

Even my cat prefers my brother. Here she is this afternoon while his record was spinning.

Anyway, how would shared gigs between Neil and Karl have affected each of them? Always a student of the masters, Wallinger would have soaked everything up, surely. And then maybe he'd have gone and made a Shakey-style brilliant mess of a third record next instead of the somewhat precious Bang!

Meanwhile, Neil might not have even noticed World Party's presence. I remember standing outside his touring van two years later for a few hours before and after a show, hoping to shake his hand and say "dude, like, what's up Neil?" Nothing doing: he never emerged. So maybe he was too busy freaking out at whatever was on CNN in his van at the time to even notice that his stage was being desecrated by Social Distortion.

But, whether he recognizes it or not, Neil did come around, almost 30 years later, and lay down a great track in the supremely homemade-yet-layered style of World Party. Just take a listen to the song Wallinger would have likely opened with on that 91 tour, Is It Too Late.

Talk about a one man stoner band: the drum machine is programmed haplessly and it takes some time for the layers to build. But build they do. The singing is terrific; the guitars quickly shred; keyboards hold the middle and there's a clear message to be had: let's do something quick before we kill the planet.

Every one of those same descriptors can be applied to the title track of Neil Young's 2016 record Peace Trail. Sure, the stoner in Young's song is way older, and (amazingly for 21st Century Neil) he's more concerned about telling himself that it's not too late to make even more out of his life rather than preaching about the environment.

And yes, Neil's too old to follow Karl's lead and program a simple drum machine, and so he's hired the ubiquitous Jim Keltner to beat on things behind him.

But take a listen as Peace Trail assembles similar layers as Is It Too Late; hear equally gnarly guitars churn around the keyboards. Enjoy Neil vocal layering and soulful singing. Sure, he sounds 70 years old here; he is! But come on: clearly, it's not too late for you, me Karl and Neil to get on the Peace Trail:

(Wow, cool video. We've seen plenty of cinematic amateurism in Shakeyvision since we started this project back in December. But Neil clearly handed this one off to a professional.)

Anyway, can you dig the comparison between these two sweet, earnest, rough and masterful anthems? Let's add Peace Trail to the list of songs we hope Wallinger covered during his final years of yet-to-be-released studio work.

And meanwhile, to my ears Peace Trail is possibly Young's best song this century. Seriously. What compares with it? Walk Like a Giant? Okay, maybe. I Do from Colorado? Sure. And then there's those great two songs on Toast... Well, anyway, this song is freakin' great.

It'd be wonderful to report that the entire album is just as good. But, oh my good Billy Talbot, that's not the case.

No other track on the record carries any of the same ambition, drive or depth. Yes, Neil occasionally blasts his harmonica either through his big red effects board or through the muffler to his link-volt super sonic veggie burger powered Hummer. Yes, Show Me has a bit of swing. Yes, the rambling story within John Oaks makes it sounds like a Greendate outtake, if that's your thing. And, yes, one song is titled Terrorist Suicide Hang Gliders.

But beyond the title track, Peace Trail sounds like it was written and recorded on one of Neil's slightly below average weekends while Stephen Stills snored on the couch. Only one other song sounds like it required more than 15 minutes of Neil's time.

After all, it takes more than 15 minutes to program your new robot. I don't know what to say about the album's closer, My New Robot (Home Host-Bot), other than thank god for Neil Young. He's truly unique among all humans.

Daredevil Timeline Thoughts

Assuming that Matt and Foggy weren't exaggerating all that much when they told Karen they had been lawyers for a couple of hours, I submit the following two timelines for how this might have happened.

POSSIBLE TIMELINE 1

Late December 2013 – Early January 2014*: Apply to take Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE).

Late March 2014: Takes the MPRE.

April 1, 2014 – April 30, 2014: Apply to take the New York Bar Exam (NYBE).

Late April 2014 or Early May 2014**: Get results from MPRE.

May 5, 2014 – May 16, 2014: Take end of year exams.

May 22, 2014: Attend graduation ceremony from Columbia Law School.

May 22, 2014 – July 28, 2014: Study for NYBE.

July 29, 2014 – July 30, 2014: Take NYBE***

October 28, 2014: Get results from NYBE.

October 31, 2014: Receive Notice of Certification from the Appellate Division, submits application for admission to New York Bar.

November 2014: Has fitness and character interview, mandatory orientation program, and admission ceremony where the oath of office is administrated in open court.

November 2014 – July 2015: Try to convince a bank to give two baby attorneys with no trial experience a business loan to start their own law firm while doing some kind of work in order to pay for things like rent and food.

July 2015****: Events of Daredevil Season 1 begin.

*I could not find exact dates for MPRE except for this year (2023) so I'm guessing based on those dates.

**MPRE typically gives the results about six weeks after taking the exam.

***Consisting of the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), Multistate Performance Test (MPT), and New York law oriented exam consisting of 5 essays questions and 50 multiple choice questions. New York doesn't start using the Universal Bar Exam (UBE) in combination with the NYLC (New York Law Course) and NYLE (New York Law Exam) until 2016.

****MCU and MCU-related stuff are presumed to take place in the same year they aired unless specifically stated otherwise so Daredevil Season 1 took place sometime during 2015. Judging by the weather we see in the first season, I using the month they began filming in New York City which was July.

April 2014: Apply to participate in the Pro-Bono Scholars Program*

Late July 2014 – Mid-September 2014: Apply to take Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE).

October – November 2014: Accepted into the Program.

November 1, 2014 – November 30, 2014: Applies for New York Bar Exam (NYBE).

Early November 2014: Takes the MPRE.

Mid-December 2014: Gets results from MPRE.

February 24, 2015 – February 25, 2015: Takes NYBE.

March 1, 2015: Begin Program of combination of pro-bono legal work under supervision of attorney + classwork under supervising Columbia faculty member.

April 27, 2015: Gets results from NYBE.

ca. May 22, 2015**: Complete Program.

June 2015: Receive J.D from Columbia.

June 2015: Receive Notice of Certification from the Appellate Division, submits application for admission to New York Bar.

July 2015: Get their business loan for Nelson & Murdock.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Matt would be encouraged to apply for his exams as soon as possible since he has to apply for disability accommodations and that requires some additional forms and documentation.

Doing the Pro-Bono Scholar Programs satisfies the requirement for 50 hours of pro-bono work for admission to the New York Bar that came into effect in January 2015.

FURTHER THOUGHTS

Alternately, Matt and Foggy passed the bar a couple years prior to series and worked for a couple of years at a law firm or as a judge's clerk while they built up a fund / prepared a business plan to convince a bank to give them a business loan*. AND actually learn how to be trial attorneys since law school doesn't teach you that.

*Given that they reference being in debt and how expensive Columbia is, any money Jack left Matt was long gone so they would need a loan to cover their start-up costs.
