Five Go Adventuring!

Not sure how far this Enid Blyton-esque fic will go (especially since there's Regency AU also brewing in the author's mind), but here's a snippet. In this AU, Lucy Tracy is still alive....

The opinion of the Harley Street doctor was that Mrs Tracy would benefit from the fresh sea air at Eastbourne. Mr Tracy, only too happy to take his wife to the coast if it would help her recovery, soon found a house for a short term rental. It was perhaps a little small for such a large and boisterous family and, in spite of how much their parents loved their five sons, there was a feeling that the boys required a great deal more space and adventure than they could afford. Mrs Tracy, also, needed some peace and quiet to still her nerves and sleep.

Unable to fully devote himself to both wife and sons, Mr Tracy had the idea that they might enjoy the bracing air and open landscapes of Devonshire. To that end, he sent a telegram to his wife’s sister, living in the small coastal town of Lynton. The lady replied by return of post to say that, while her house was not extensive in its size, it would nevertheless be sufficient so long as some of the boys didn’t mind sharing rooms.

A local nurse undertaking to watch over Mrs Tracy for the two days of Mr Tracy’s absence, trunks were packed and Mr Tracy climbed aboard a train from Brighton to the London stations. At Paddington, he hugged each boy individually, giving instructions to his eldest, seventeen year old Scott.

Watching and waving as long as the train was in sight, he sighed and turned away, going in search of his train back to Brighton.

He was entirely confident that his sister in law and her husband would be able to keep a close watch on his boys. They were each well meaning and eager lads, brought up to respect their elders and, all excepting Scott, not over hasty. Leaning back in his seat as the train pulled away from the station, the last thought in his head before dozing off what just how much trouble could five boys really get into.

Aboard their own train, his sons chatted excitedly about whither they were bound, hoping that their time Devonshire would be full of adventure.

Adventures there would be, as well as daring feats of bravery, and had they only known how much, their eyes would have started from their heads.

The drama with the most amount characters is Kinnporsche: The Series with 10 characters: Kim, Kinn, Pete, Porchay, Porsche, Tankhun, Tawan, Tay, Time, and Vegas. They've also had the most amount of winners from it with characters from Kinnporsche winning 3 different brackets (Porsche - Babygirl, Tay - Gender Envy, and Kinn - Horny on Main).

Found this ep a little boring. But enjoyed getting to have so much Jeff and Pete.

Let’s get into the photo review

Now Pete says he can use Way later in the ep to Babe but??? What the fuck can Way do? He lives in that diner being drunk. He’s not super trusted by Tony. I guess Pete and Way are both enigmas but idk. I don’t get what Pete is trying to do. Maybe way can compel someone to show them evidence???

Nooooooo he’s celebrating your death Charlie WTF what would you do if babe died? I get that he needs to pretend to be dead to test out if you can get rid of abilities but Charlie is a very stupid protagonist.

They all are motivated by this. Every single character except for Tony who is just evil

I do love the found family element of everyone staying in Alan’s giant house. I loved getting to see Kim walking about offering breakfast. This light hearted scene with North Sonic and Alan was very sweet. The whole show is VERY heavy and I feel like this was one of the longest light scene we’ve had. Once again I love Sonic’s tie dye heart shirt. Are North and Sonic dating? I guess so?

I wonder if Jeff likes the skate park cause a future there is just scraped knees or having fun. You can also be around people but not be too close to them. I can see why that environment appeals to Jeff. The little magnet bracelets were cute Alan putting the moves on Jeff. The NC scene went on forever. So good on you if that’s your kind of thing…. For me it’s a 2x speed through. But nice! Great.

Ohhhh so Kenta is normal. I guess if he was an alpha he’d be sold off. But if I was Tony I’d want a super human watching me. So who is uncle revel’s son I’m putting my money on Kenta. I love Kenta. He’s not as precious to me as Kim but he is great I found this back story very appealing. As an enigma Pete is a superior baby maker (is that what’s going on idk?) but he’s in love with a human without the right parts for that. Very sweet.

So is this Pete’s ability to show people memories? At first I thought it was a stylistic way to show Kenta’s idealized version of the past but PitBabe haven’t done that for flash backs before which makes me think it’s a memory. Kenta really loves Pete he can’t stay away.

ABSOLUTELY I do!!

Books

Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn. This is a really charming romance about Meg, who does custom calligraphy, including wedding invitations, like the invites she did for Reid Sutherland a year ago. But now he's back, having spotted a hidden message she wove into his invitations warning him that his marriage was doomed. He wants to know how she knew, but Meg's got her own problems - but despite herself she feels a connection with Reid that's only growing deeper . . .

Everything Eva Ibbotson has ever written, especially her historical romances. My personal favourite is The Secret Countess, set in 1919, in which Anna, a Russian Countess, after fleeing from the Bolsheviks, takes a job as a maid in a young English Earl's household.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows - told in letters and the inspiration for the film, it's quite different from the movie in some respects but is just warm, gentle and a really cosy read.

Crosstalk by Connie Willis - this is a romcom with a slight sci-fi vibe; in the not too distance future Briddey Flannigan gets an implant to allow telepathic communication with her boyfriend so they can have a more open relationship, but instead finds herself connected to someone else entirely . . .

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell - this is such a gentle romance, set in the 90s, Lincoln works for a paper in their IT department and has been assigned to check emails that get flagged by their new system. One particular coworker, Beth, keeps getting her emails flagged and as he reads them, he finds himself falling in love with her . . . the only problem is he's never actually met her.

Anne of Green Gables (and sequels) by L. M. Montgomery - a true classic, that is just so joyful to read, and the love story between Anne and Gilbert is one of my very favourites.

The Boy trilogy by Meg Cabot - these are three of Meg Cabot's adult books, all loosely connected but they can be read as standlones, and are just fun, easy reads with nice romances that are really feel good.

Movies

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - since I've plugged the book let's also plug the movie. It's gentle, it's warm, it's comforting, it's lovely and it's two hours of Michiel Huisman being charming.

The Shop Around the Corner - the original that inspired You've Got Mail, with James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. It's lower stakes that YGM but still fun, romantic and really feel good.

When In Rome - this film is ridiculous but I love it, a romcom with Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel where she takes coins out of a fountain in Rome causing four men to fall hopelessly in love with her.

The Longest Ride - this is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel and one of my comfort films. There's two love stories, one in the present day and one historical being told to the heroine by Alan Alda, and they're both really sweet.

Your Name - an anime film, I watched this a few years ago and it instantly became one of my all time favourites. It's so beautifully animated, and the romance in it is top tier.

When Fools Rush In - Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek have a one night stand in Las Vegas, but when she gets pregnant he proposes marriage on a whim and they try to build a life together. A stellar romcom and Matthew Perry said it was his favourite of all his films.

Belle (2013) - absolute peak period drama romance, and a truly underrated gem of a film.

Take the Lead - inspired by a true story, Antonia Banderas stars as a ballroom dancer who teaches a class of inner-city kids to dance. Beautiful, charming, romantic.

The Jane Austen Book Club - a group of women form a book club to read all the Jane Austen books, and find they help with their own problems. Lots of friendship and a bit of romance on the side.

And since it is December some special Christmas comfort movie plugs . . .

While You Were Sleeping - Sandra Bullock saves a man from an oncoming train, but gets mistaken by his family for his financee and then starts falling for his brother. A+++ rom com.

Christmas in Boston - two penpals finally agree to meet after writing for 13 years. The catch? They both sent each other pictures of their best friends and pretended it was them.

Dash & Lily - a series rather than a movie but super cute. Lily leaves a notebook with some challenges in a bookstore, Dash finds it and does them, and leaves her some of his own in return, and thus an unlikely friendship is born.

Midnight at the Magnolia - radio hosts and childhood friends Maggie and Jack fake being a couple to drive up the ratings on their show.

Miracle on 34th Street - both the original 1940s version and the 90s remark are great, in which a lawyer and a little girl have to prove that a man claiming to be Santa is the real thing when he's put on trial.

The 12 Dates of Christmas - woman set up on a blind date on Christmas Eve has to relive the night over and over until she gets it right.

Favorite BL: Not Me. I think that might be a surprise to some because I think I probably come across as an Eclipse stan against all odds (which is true), but Not Me is my favourite. Eclipse is up there, as is Bad Buddy. But I love me some anarchic anti-capitalists.

Favorite Pairing: AkkAyan. This is the opposite of surprising.

Most Underrated Actor: AOU THANABOON. Though he's getting so much more recognition of late, which is glorious.

Favorite Character: Tinn (MSP), Ayan (Eclipse), Sean (Not Me). Don't make me pick.

Favorite Side Character: I don't really know how to differentiate side characters from characters. Alan or Heart (Moonlight Chicken), maybe. Because they're apparently supporting characters as opposed to mains.

Favorite Scene: Have... some.

One thing about me is I love a beach scene. And a good hug. And... idk, First, apparently.

Favorite Line: "It's a kitchen, Pran, not a porno." Gets me every time. I'm very deep.

Most Anticipated BL & Why: Only Friends. Because I'm basic af.

Healthiest Relationship in a BL: GunTinn. Green flags all round. The kids are all right. PatPran I think get an honourable mention here too.

Most Toxic Relationship: I've been staring blankly at my MDL for like 30 minutes and I honestly can't say I have a fav. toxic relationship? The easy answer is VegasPete, but I... #unpopularopinion don't care about the pairing. Hey maybe AlanWen. They were toxic before the split, and yet.

Guilty Pleasure Series: I feel no guilt about anything, lmao.

As someone who mostly reads indie comics, who is Hank?

The red boy out of these two. Brainwave Jr.

He's a member of Infinity Inc. which is the superteam that the JSA's kids formed after their parents refused to let them join, except he is NOT a JSA kid and is actually the kid of one of their villains who just happened to show up on the same day as everyone else with an actual problem he wanted the JSA's help with.

Except he was STUPID and decided the best way to ask them for help was to illusion himself to look like his evil dad and tear a hole in their wall. Ends up joining Infinity Inc. because the leader is his mom's (who is a superhero's) adoptive brother, but also around this point his dad switches sides briefly because he's not entirely a terrible parent but winds up getting killed trying to protect his son.

He transfers his powers to him and this is the start of a lot of mental health issue stuff including Hank's mental breakdown where he's mostly acting as a cartoon villain while actual villains make fun of him, and then his ex-girlfriend's dad locks him up in a torture asylum in a plotline that everyone who's read it is kind of ":/ Alan don't do this" about, Alan (original Green Lantern) in general doesn't really like his enemy's son dating his daughter, even though the relationship is basically 100% fluff + sweetness.

Mr and Mrs Hawkman...

Notable for having the dynamic of all time with his ex-girlfriend's gay twin brother where they warm up to each other (Hank notably always puts up with Todd's tantrums and values him a lot), have storylines that mirror each other exactly and also have a little attempted murder for fun. Also there's a rescue scene where Todd saves him and the background turns into the bisexual flag.

Also has a seperate dynamic with another commonly suspected as closeted character where he appears in that character's future dream outlined in the stars, right at the very end, like the most important character in the entire segment. No one else appears like this.

Kind of funny while getting revenge on Alan while still a villain ngl:

Basically, sweet and kind kid of a villain who gets treated really badly because he is the kid of a villain, gets traumatized, gets a worm in his head that eats part of his brain as a "cure", gets given a permanent disability, heals mentally but is still sadder than he was before, gets told by his friends they prefered him when he was happier. Never really seemed straight and should probably have a boyfriend, does also have a dynamic with Al Rothstein and Norda Cantrell which I will not get into.

Lmao okay I post this one a bit too often but it is the best way to summarize his character...

Also I lied earlier in that he is actually a JSA kid because Carter and ESPECIALLY Jay both dad him a lot and he keeps getting included in "our kids" statements. He's never actually officially joined the JSA team and at this point I am invested in seeing him a member and happy (he was last seen being tortured on panel).

Pride, Paint and Rainbow Pins!

@thunder-pride fic for Virgil’s day! (a little late but technically still on today’s theme!)

Pride! Fluff! Virgil being artistic!! Demisexuality and gayness!!!

Virgil wondered whether there was such a thing as too many pride pins.

He fumbled the backing of another and creatively swore as he poked the sharp pin into his thumb. The things he did for art.

He’d only taken the numerous pins off of his denim jacket to protect them from getting covered in paint but maybe he should’ve chanced it with the stray art supplies. Last week’s tonne of concrete dropped on him in the exosuit had hurt less. Virgil frowned at the bead of blood that welled up and sucked it away revealing the tiny pinprick wound. His medic knowledge told him he’d live. He pouted, probably.

The last pin went on one-handedly, with not inconsiderable difficulty. Or Virgil was being dramatic about it, could be either. Gords wasn’t the only one in the family with that skill.

Tubes of fabric paints were scattered across his desk, like a particularly colourful minefield. He replaced them in their packet, neatly lined up by gradient. The brushes were already washed and drying by the sink. Virgil never considered a project truly finished until he’d put his tools away.

With the pins reattached to the front panels of his jacket, he flipped it over to show the newly painted back piece. What had once been plain blue denim was now covered shoulder to shoulder in art.

Thunderbird Two soared upwards in all her painted glory, the final details just dried. She was steadfast determination from nose to wingtips, green and majestic.

However it was the background of rainbow sky Virgil was most proud of. Red to orange to yellow, green, blue, purple, blending and swirling together. Fluffy white clouds, then a sprinkling of stars finished it off. The colours were nearly pastel in hue but somehow fiercer, forming a kaleidoscopic sunset.

A rainbow, all joy and hope and Pride.

Virgil swung his jacket over his shoulders, then stood in front of his mirror to admire his handy work. See Scott, he didn’t wear flannel all of the time, just most, because hey it was comfy.

After some twisting around to see what the new art looked like on, Virgil stood there grinning because it was exactly as amazing as he’d hoped.

He fussed with a few pins that weren’t sitting right to his artist’s eye, then turned away from the mirror to look down at himself.

Coloured enamel and shiny metal caught the light, rounded button badges nestled between.

A rainbow gay flag and demisexual flag pin sat pride, get it— pride, of place near the lapel.

Over his heart lay his first badge, an artist’s palettle swirled with ‘love is love,’ which he’d found in a gutter with a broken pin when he’d been sixteen and lost. His teenage self had never imagined how far he would come.

The green ‘he/him’ pronouns pin was a few years old, worn in solidarity with the red one Alan had gotten when he’d first come out as trans. A MLM gay flag in its green and blue was next to it. The tiny astronaut waving a demisexual flag came from John’s packet of space themed aro and ace pins. A rainbow frog had been gifted to him by Gordon who had its panromantic counterpart.

The ‘queer engineers’ badge Virgil had designed himself, on request from Brains. A green carnation turned up one day after he’d been admiring Kayo’s violet pin. The rainbow Thunderbird Two pin was his newest addition, as this year everyone had convinced Scott that International Rescue pride merchandise was a priority. Scott had been first in line for what they nicknamed the Thunder-Bi One badge, sporting it on his flight jacket along with his Aro-plane pin.

A progress pride flag shone for its inclusivity.

Wrapped in trans flag colours and rainbows, a circular badge read, ‘You’re safe with me.’

Virgil had amassed quite a collection of pride pins over the years, so many cool designs by amazing artists in the community.

They were more than the pieces of metal and plastic they were made from. They were a way of showing who he was and what he believed in. A celebration. A remembrance of their history. A part of their community.

They represented Pride.

So, no. There wasn’t a such thing as too many pride pins.

After all, what else would go with his rainbow bootlaces?
