Phyrexians you control get +1/+1. Equipped creature has deathtouch and "Whenever a creature dealt damage by this creature this turn dies, create a token that's a copy of that creature except it's a 0/0 black Phyrexian Germ." Equip 1 P/U/R P/U/R (P/U/R can be paid with U, R, or 2 life.)

“Now, my dark purpose will be fulfilled, and the-”

“A demonic consultation spell? How gauche!”

Kess channeled mana through a gem lying discarded on the ground nearby. The stone glowed a bright blue, then fired a beam of light at the sinister mage about to cast a spell of his own. The light hit the hooded man in the back, disrupting his magic and causing him to scowl at Kess.

“All that power,” spat the enemy wizard, as he gestured to the ring of jewels floating in an orbit around Kess. “All that power, and you insist on using it for…parlor tricks!”

Kess shot the man a coy wink. “Yes!” she chimed, as she channeled mana into yet another beam.

The dark wizard dodged the attack, again attempting to cast his spell. “Minions! Delay her!”

With his free hand, the man snapped his fingers, and instantly a squadron of knights in black armor materialized from the shadows. The summoned phalanx moved to protect their master, locking shields in an impressive display.

“Ah, how adorable!”

Kess gave a sarcastic laugh. With a wave of her hand, she brought forth yet another crystal, this one glowing a sinister red. The knights tightened their formation, but their master merely scoffed at the floating stone.

“More lasers? I hope you can do more than one at a time. I have quite a few knights, after all.”

Kess smirked.

“I wouldn’t worry about me.”

The red gem exploded in a burst of heat and flame. The enemy knights held position, but were still swept away by the intense magic, dissolving back into the shadows from which they came. The flames continued unabated, towards the now-panicking dark wizard.

“NO! AHHHH!”

The fire greedily consumed the dark wizard, dissipating shortly after. Kess recalled the red gem from its spot lying on the ground, and returned it to its place among the other orbiting stones. Then, with a satisfied smirk, she turned from the corpse and floated away.

“How’s that for parlor tricks?”

[Apparently Kess is from Grixis. The more you know! Anyways, nothing but respect to those who use potentially oppressive commanders to run jank!]

Do you admire, in the abstract, the newly-connected shards of Alara or the interlocking guilds of Ravnica?

I suppose there is potential, even in their crude, fleshy forms. Like ants, the fleshlings begin to grasp the value of unity in their tiny minds and instinctively draw themselves together, blindly, gropingly--but they need aid, of course, which the Mother graciously offers. -A

Do you have any thoughts on vis, the magic system of grixis?

I love myself some life manipulation, and the fact it's separate from the strictly biological living makes it seem all the more mystical. It fits very well with black mana's usual way of doing things, the center of the shard, albeit it doesn't translate as well into blue nor red.

The separation of vis from biological living in magic invited immediate speculation as to whether Vis is a form of energy that constitutes one's soul, given that we also know that life is very much possible without that. It could also be a secret third component of what is thought of as "life", of course, or something related to all of the above.

Not much else on the subject, we don't know a whole lot about vis!

Magic Monday

Everyone, we’d like you all to meet Mercurius. He is a human wizard from the Shard of Esper on Alara. From an early age Mercurius exhibited an innate ability to control and mold etherium. When he came of age he was allowed to join the Ethersworn in their progress of the Noble Work. After a year with the organization Mercurius was granted an etherium heart for his attention to detail and the intricate designs he created.

Everything was going Mercurius’ way. With a slight control freak personality he reveled in his ability to mold the very world around him in the way he desired. When the Conflux occurred, Mercurius wasn’t prepared for the Shards to overlap and undo his work. This stress and defeat ignited his planeswalker spark and he traveled to Eldraine.

While there he meets a wide eyed merfolk with a fascination for human ‘artifacts’. Seeing the strange new world he was now a part of through the merfolk’s eyes woke something up inside Mercurius. He came to the realization that he can’t control everything and needs to accept the good with the bad.
