So I have to say that the texture on your art is just *chef's kiss* and I have to 100% ask what brushes you use cause whatever it is just makes me wanna chomp your art it's so good.

So, when I was still using Photoshop, my main inking brush was Stumpy Pencil from here: https://stumpypencil.blogspot.com/2009/11/return-of-stumpy-pencil.html I use the Pencil: Stumpy 6 pt. for basically everything. :P

As for color and texture, I BELIEVE most of my brushes came from Charlie Bowater (free, here: https://charliebowater.gumroad.com/l/BoiJD) and Kyle T. Webster (uuuuh I'm not sure which set exactly anymore, though I've had good experience with everything I've used so a good ol' Google search should get you pointed in the right direction)! There are a few others as well, I think, but I've just been transferring all my brushes from install to install and I nnnnno longer recall from whom they came, I'm so sorry 😢Maybe Algenpfleger?

These days, I use Clip Studio primarily, so it's a different story--I've had to make a few myself (I had to recreate Stumpy Pencil, for instance, to my endless sorrow), and I'm not sssure how to share those or if I even can in a couple cases since I was grabbing old brush shapes, but I have gotten these brushes from the Clip Studio Assets, and I've messed around with most of these and liked them!

#ask #art advice #I'm always happy to share what knowledge I got! but also...#my knowledge sucks because I have long ago forgotten where I got my stuff lmao #to be completely honest #in an average flat-color-with-texture image I use like maybe 4 brushes #stumpy for the lines then a hair brush a sandy looking texture brush and maybe a big soft airbrush for some spots #the fur brush from clip studio is great for crunchy paint lines as well as fur and short hair #OH and a freckle brush #but I think I made that one myself in PS and Clip 'cuz it's just varying the size and scatter of your brush #and then for the few paintings I do I use some blocky rectangular painting brushes for most of the details #which are somewhere among the clip brushes but I can't remember which #gives the faintest whisper of leyendecker y'know #but having a ton of texturing brushes can be really helpful for niche situations!#even if you don't use them much it's fun to have a bunch around and then try them out when you hit a wall #hmm this fabric could look rougher #what do I have that could do that #or what could I go get and try out #that sorta thing #v experimental #lol this got ramble-y sorry

This is kind of a concept piece. My idea for Bessy's Bed & Breakfast.

It's situated on the highest rooftop of the living district on the island she lives on, overlooking a gorgeous vista of the beach and some ominous pyramids in the waters below and around. Up there, any traffic noise is pretty quiet, and together with the greenery on the rooftop, her BnB is a serene little haven.

You may begin to see what inspired this campaign's setting... ovo

I actually drew very little of this by the way. I am experimenting more with assets lately, and with using them to quickly mock up or block in more complicated ideas I have so that I can still easily communicate them. These are almost entirely assets from the CSP store or algenpfleger's brush packs.

Also, @nichtschwertart went in and refined some stuff, like adding the reflections of the pyramids. I really love how much they can add to any image with just a few strokes!

Daily Doodle - Vampire Envoy

Ok, continuing my painting journey with Vampire Envoy by Johannes Voss. (The deviantArt was algenpfleger, but the mtg card it comes from credits Johannes Voss.)

I feel like I'm still making progress, but my paintings for the last couple of days were absolutely terrible. Which is good, I think? Because it means my eyes are getting ahead of my skill, and I can see what needs to be improved. I think my biggest issue for the unmentionable weekend paintings was a lack of detail. Like, I get to a point where I just REALLY want the finished product. I tried really hard to capture a lot of the detail in this one, but I still rushed the background quite a bit.

And like, maybe that's fine? Like, I think from my attempts at painting with lots of colors, I'm losing the emphasis that I'm putting into shapes for my smaller color paintings. I think rushing some parts so I can focus on others is actually really good, and I shouldn't be doing colors and shapes and proportions and everything else all at the same time.

And I'm really happy with how this turned out. I think I succeeded in capturing the detail that I was looking for. I originally had a gradient for the background, but I'm happy that I went and broke it up into solid color sections. If I spent more time, I could have tried to capture the clouds and sea a bit better.

I think my proportions are a bit off. Like, I was really stressing about how to convey the arm that is directly in front of the body, and I think in my underlying sketch I used the arm to add some width to the torso that I then removed later. So, the entire chest, torso, hip area looks squished.

Idk. I guess that's all I really have to say. And like, still improving yada yada, so I can't be blamed for anything being bad.

Algenpfleger is an awesome artist, been following them for... wow a decade now, very worthwhile checking them out. Has a very active Patreon I believe, lots of cool mailed stuff, Magic tokens and such.

I’ve had these since WAY back, very useful brushes. Perfect for metals. Perfect for all sorts of other things too, but I’ve only ever really used them for metals.
