i started playing Lunar - Silver Star Story, an old ass jrpg for the ps1, and, oh no, i think im in love
both because the cutscenes are all done in 90s anime artstyle and are really good, but also because the dialogue is just. Wonderful.

So…with Isaac from Golden Sun being announced as an assist trophy for Smash Bros (which-AWESOME! LOVE GOLDEN SUN!)…I’ve been wondering what other gaming warriors they can add to smash. I know that there won’t be any more new additions but I was thinking about characters that would be 100% out of left field.
…I know that Nintendo likes to choose things that are unexpected, but if they REALLY wanted to pick something obscure, but something that still fits within the smash bros esthetic, something that NO one would see coming, my pick would be Alex from Lunar: Silver Start Story.
I mean LOOKIT DIS PURE BOI?
Tumblr media
Seriously, NO ONE would ever think to add this boi to the games. If they can have Link, Hero from Dragon Quest, SO many characters from Fire Emblem, and Final Fantasy characters (and if they’re not going to add a Tales Character-though I would vote for Kratos and not Lloyd) then one more sword weirder wouldn’t hurt.
Alex would be a safe bet. He even has an alternate costume.
His Final Smash could be either Swords Dance or Red Dragon Anger. His stage would definitely be the Grindery, especially the late stage where you fight the final boss, or Althena’s tower. (I don’t think there are any blue, crystal looking areas in Smash Bros-besides the Ice Climber level)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No one would EVER expect it…ever…

Kei Shigema wrote up a proposal for a Lunar 0, and other Lunar news
I've been systematically translating the Lunar interviews from Beep21, but there's news that I think can't wait.  In the second part of his Eternal Blue interview, series scriptwriter/visionary Kei Shigema talks about having drawn up a treatment for another Lunar—and it's not the story you might first think.
- Do you think you'll be able to be present the tale of the Four Heroes era (the so-called Lunar 0) touched upon in the PSP version of Silver Star in a game or other media?
Shigema: Lunar 0 has become a story of a bit different era!   As for the tale of the Four Heroes: the emotions and conflicts and fated bonds involved are released and resolved in Alex's story, so I don't think there's any need to depict it independently. However, I'd like to write a little bit about Laike's story after the end of the game.
- Be honest: is there even a 0.1% chance of Lunar 3 in the future?  I'm on pins and needles!
Shigema: I think the statute of limitations is up, so...  (Actually, about 21 lines of grown-up stuff was deleted here...)   ...So several years after the above was suspended, there were talks about whether we could now create a Lunar 0 about the details of how humanity moved to Lunar, and for consideration, we created a simple plot and characters.  Mr. Kubooka even drew up rough sketches of the main characters.   These were just for consideration; they didn't go to production. That means that, as for as the 0.1% chance goes: I don't think it's zero. However: an extraordinary amount of manpower and funding is necessary to create an RPG from scratch in this day and age, and when I think of getting to the point of getting that all together, I think it would be enormously difficult. I myself still want to hold out hope, so let's give Game Arts our support!
He also talks about his ideas on what may have happened after EB, which include a number of surprising concepts...
- What happened to Hiro and Lucia afterward?
Shigema: Welllll, I don't know—I suppose they went on a variety of adventures together? Lucia may have awakened the Blue Star, but I don't imagine it would have revived immediately just like that.  I wouldn't be surprised if an exhausted Hiro & Lucia had two or three more adventures on the level of Eternal Blue!  Making new comrades from people sleeping on the Blue Star—maybe everyone on Lunar coming to help, of course.  I also kind of doubt whether that would've really been the last we saw of Ghaleon-sama.   And perhaps at the end of Hiro and Lucia's adventures, the frozen earth would have changed to green...
Shigema also thinks that the spiritual successor to Lunar has already been made:
Incidentally, while it's not a sequel to Lunar, Tales of Destiny 2 (TOD2) is its spiritual successor—its emotional heir.
I'd wanted overseas Lunar fans to play it, too, but, alas, there was no overseas release! Abroad, Tales of Eternia was sold as "Tales of Destiny 2".
The role of TOD2's lengthy animated cutscenes; the expressions; the characters and story construction; the thematic material; the position of the heroine; the music production; and on and on—I think they're all connected fairly directly to Lunar.  The element of romance between the characters etc. too is that way.
Particularly thematically, Lunar is, as an action-adventure tale, thoroughly about how the hero fights to save the girl he loves and saves the world in the process. With TOD2, we tried to go further and depict the decisions and growth of a hero forced to choose between the girl and the world.
Shigema is credited as a “script producer” on Tales of Destiny 2.
So, to recap:
Kei Shigema spoke with an unspecified somebody (Game Arts seems likely, but it's not explicitly specified) about making another Lunar game, to the point where he drew up a rough plot and characters (for which series character designer Toshiyuki Kubooka drew up rough sketches).  Nothing’s gone to production, and he thinks funding would be a major obstacle.
This proposed Lunar game, "Lunar 0," would be about how humanity came to live on Lunar.
Shigema does not want to do the Four Heroes story as a standalone work.
Shigema thinks Hiro and Lucia might have had adventures after Eternal Blue in order to revive the Blue Star fully.
There are other people sleeping on the Blue Star, apparently.
Ghaleon might have shown up in some manner after his passing in Eternal Blue.
Shigema considers Tales of Destiny 2 (the Japanese title, not Eternia) to be the spiritual successor to Lunar.

Lunar Guilty Silver Gear!
I was thinking about Guilty Gear Vastedge XT, an pachislot exclusive “game”(it’s a Japanese machine) and although it’s only somewhat canon(due to Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN), I thought this scene below is interesting.
Tumblr media
I wonder if I’m the only one who thought of this(see below) when looking at this picture?XD
Tumblr media
Daisuke has secretly played Lunar: SIlver Star Story! XD Just kidding, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did. Even though the circumstances are slightly different(Alex goes to save Luna to set her free from the seal while Ky put Dizzy in the seal so she wouldn’t disappear), the general concept is similar. The only thing is romance in the Lunar series has real development and chemistry instead of forced, XD.

Fictober Day 2: Promise
Promise (1124 words) by Siver Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Lunar (Video Games) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Luna Noa, Saria Noa (Lunar), Alex Noa, Ohro Noa (Lunar) Additional Tags: Family, 100 Fandoms Summary: They promised to always look after her
100 Fandoms Challenge Prompt: Promise Fandom: Lunar
For @azurefishnets who had a prompt from Press Start that I’d been eyeing but didn’t get to, but now has partially inspired this, and who introduced me to Lunar in the first place for which I’m most grateful <3.
“We promise we will keep her safe.”
Weeks passed since Saria and Ohro made that promise. They passed in a sort of blur as they tried to navigate their new life with a baby and toddler. Saria sat in a chair by the window, cradling Luna. Moonlight bathed the sleeping village and despite her own creeping tiredness, Saria found herself content.
Luna pressed closer to her, her tiny fist wrapping around her shirt’s fabric. Saria smiled down at her. She’d be asleep again soon. It was strange to think how different she was from Alex when he was her age. It was often a battle to get Alex to sleep while Luna would wake a couple times before drifting off again quietly. She didn’t cry out much, but she was more vocal in other ways. Alex had always been quieter. Saria was fascinated to see how else they might be similar or differ as they grew.
“Mama!” Alex toddled up to the chair.
“You’re supposed to be asleep,” Saria said with little rancour.
“Want you.”
She shifted over and Alex clambered up to curl next to her. He reached out with a big yawn to touch Luna’s hair. “Sis.”
Saria gave them both a fond stare as they fell asleep.
“I will always keep you safe. I promise,” she murmured.
“Mama sing!”
Luna stared at Saria from her bed. Saria tucked the blanket around her. Alex sat on Ohro’s knee while he read a book to him.
“All right. One song,” Saria said.
Luna clapped her hands. Saria adjusted the blanket again as Ohro caught her eye with a grin before they returned their attention to their respective charges. She sung to shining blue eyes and felt herself lost in the notes.
“Ah… aah. Aah aaah!” Luna repeated and giggled.
Saria blinked. That had almost held a tune, the same tune.
“More!” Luna exclaimed.
“You heard the lady,” Ohro said.
Alex nodded. “I wanna hear more!”
“Honestly,” Saria said. “All right. One more time, then it’s time to sleep, okay? And that goes for you too, Alex.”
“Aaa!” Luna said again and Saria started the song once more.
When she finished Luna snuggled into her pillow with a humming sort of noise. Alex clung half asleep to Ohro as he brought him to his bed and once settled, he stood by Saria and they held hands looking at their children. Saria renewed the promise to herself. They would always be safe.
“Laaa. La la la lalaaa.”
Saria followed the singing to Alex’s room. Luna stood in the middle of his floor, swaying slightly to her song as she sang. Alex sat on the edge of the bed staring, rapt. Saria leaned on the door-frame. Six years old and she’d already far surpassed her in singing.
“That was beautiful,” she said when Luna wound down to a halt. Luna spun around and Alex jerked as if knocked out of some sort of reverie.
“Thank you mama!” Luna chirped.
“How are you feeling, Alex?” Saria asked. He’d complained of a bad headache earlier though he looked happier now.
Alex jumped up. “My head feels all better.”
“That’s the power of music,” Saria said lightly. And a good distraction no doubt, she added privately, not least in Luna’s singing skill. Certainly she always felt more soothed when she heard it.
Luna grabbed Alex’s hand and tugged. “Come on Alex. Let’s go play.”
The kids raced out and Saria trailed after. She half watched from the window as they met up with Ramus until all three ran from her view. May they always be so happy.
“A bit higher.”
Luna stood, her head cocked, listening. Alex frowned in concentration at his ocarina then tried again. Saria set her book aside; it was clear she wasn’t going to get much reading done right now when she couldn’t keep her eyes or ears off the practicing pair.
“That’s better,” Luna said before she launched into singing along.
Alex was still learning, but Saria thought they truly did sound lovely together. Crisp clear notes rang out around them and Luna’s voice only grew more beautiful as time went on. She leaned back into her chair with a contented sigh. Everything was well. She would see that everything always would be for her precious children.
“We promised!” Saria burst out as she paced another line across the room. Ohro rested a hand on her shoulder preventing another frantic crossing of the room.
“They’ll be all right,” Ohro soothed. “We knew this was likely.”
“Alex yes! And I wish to Althena that wasn’t the case, but why Luna? She’s not a warrior.”
“Do you really think she would let Alex go without her?”
“I…” Saria sighed. “No…”
“Alex will look after her and she’ll look after him.” Ohro wrapped his arms around her. “We taught them the skills they need in the world. Isn’t that protection on our parts?”
“I just want them to be safe.”
“We’ve done what we can. It’s their turn to fly.”
Saria nodded. “Be safe, Alex… Be safe, Luna…”
“This can’t be…” Saria whispered. She’d repeated it too many times as if the denial would make it come true.
Ohro’s face was grim. “They’ll get her back. Alex will find her.”
“Taken…” She stared at Ohro. “How could this happen? How could we let this happen?”
“Betrayal,” he muttered his eyes flicking to the door, his own anxieties plain. He pulled her into a hug. “She’ll be safe. They both will be.”
Saria leaned into his chest with a shaky breath. “They have to be,” she replied. “They have to be… I’m scared.”
He squeezed her tight. “Believe in Alex. Believe in Luna.”
“Always. Our children.”
“Mom! Dad!”
Saria raced out of the house in time to see Alex and Luna stop in front of the house. Letters were small comforts. Now, they were finally home! She flung herself at them drawing both into as large a hug as she could manage. They were here and alive and well.
Alex eventually extricated himself as Ohro joined them.
“It’s good to see you both,” he said and gripped Alex’s hand before pulling him into a hug.
Saria stepped back to stare at Luna taking in her full appearance from top to bottom. She was all right and she was here. Luna smiled at her and there was something different there, something deeper in her eyes. She clasped Saria’s hand.
“Promise fulfilled.” She blinked and was entirely the Luna Saria had always known. “I’m so happy to be home.”
Ohro pulled Luna over into another hug while Saria steadied herself against the sudden crushing relief. They were truly safe.
They all returned to the house together, a family once more.

Lunar 3 thoughts, cuz I seem to be hyperfocused on this hypothetical project.
One of the things from Lunar: Silver Star Story that really sparked my imagination was how it kinda tried to lean in to having stage musical elements. In the end, it's not much of a musical, discounting the opening theme song there's only one lyrical song and two-ish non-lyrical songs. But the setup is there, and it's easy to imagine a higher budgeted version that has a full musical soundtrack...
My ideal 3rd Lunar game would focus on and develop that "musical game" idea. :B
Like, if I do end up creating something from my project sketches and notes, it's just going to be a webcomic.
But like, I have started writing lyrics anyways. I'm completely inexperienced at lyric writing and composition. Probably won't share any of that outside of like patreon/ko-fi or anything, but it's fun to imagine something coming from it.
As for that other Lunar 3 project that's trying to get an official 3rd Lunar game made (that's unrelated to my personal hypothetical Lunar 3 and I'm not involved with their project), I kind of can't imagine they'd work more than a couple songs into a new game... I wish them the best of luck, but man after Dragon Song I really can't envision a satisfactory official Lunar 3. :-/
I know it was mostly a new studio that did DS, but there was at least one of the original Studio Alex folks on that team. Probably kinda dire of me to place my lack of expectations on that, though.
But yeah, kind of just some rambly ADHD-fueled creative Lunar 3 thoughts I've been having. I think I'm subtitling my self indulgent project "Blue Star Saga" or "Blue Star Chronicles" or something. Lol, maybe just "Lunar III: The Musical." Yeah. :B

Completed - Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Tumblr media
Oh, man. You guys remember playing video games? And not working all the time? I did that for once!
Quick question—have you ever watched "The Princess Bride"?
I'm assuming there's a good chance that you have. It's a somewhat popular cult film known for its lighthearted narrative style and trope-setting lines. Even when it gets dark, it remains pretty whimsical, which is a reason a lot of people are attracted to it. It's a perfectly fine movie! And yet, I literally cannot sit through the whole damn film without getting drunk. I can maybe manage 20-30 minutes at a time before the saccharine levels build up too much and I have to shut it off.
Is it unreasonable? Absolutely.
Is it how I feel about "Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete"? Yeah. Pretty much.
I managed to pick up a copy of this game in an actual store prior to, well, everything vile in 2020 happening. (If you're in the Des Moines area—the Southgate Shopping Center location for "Jay's CD & Hobby" happens to be where I found this. They're priced competitively compared to PriceCharting.com figures, for what that's worth!) This RPG has been on my list to get around to for quite a bit of time, and I try my darnedest to get physical copies where I can. The nice thing about the release I got was that it had a "Making of" disc that included information on the developers and translators for this game. It's a lovely feature, so if you're interested in it, you should totally check it out. There's also a music CD and a cloth map in this release as well, which is an interesting offering. It's nice that the publisher Working Designs really cared about this game. It seems like they had a bit of a family and friends operation going on, at least on the American side of the house. Makes it hard for me to pick on them.
"Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete" is the remake of the Sega CD game "Lunar: The Silver Star." Both games revolve around Alex Noa, Dragonmaster enthusiast and aspirer, and his adopted sister / love interest Luna. (Yeah, it's one of those.) As party members pile up and the plot progresses, a mystery around the previous Dragonmaster and the disappearance of the planet's goddess Althena emerges. Childish ambition gets serious, and the fate of the planet falls on the shoulders of five squabbling dorks. And I do mean that in a very nice way.
The primary draw of this particular remake involves significant plot restructures, as well as animated cutscenes, voice acting, and a whole damn musical solo by the heroine. Ya see, in the original release of "Lunar: The Silver Star", Luna gets basically dumped off at some docks, only re-entering the plot upon her kidnapping. "Silver Star Story Complete" does her the favor of not only gracing her with a song of her own, but allowing her to tag along with the party for that gap in time, developing her relationship with Alex, his friends, and most importantly, the audience. Good call. Good call.
From what I've seen in the developer documentation and IMDB listings, Working Designs did their best to try and keep as many of the voice actors from the Sega CD release as possible. (Granted, that was, like, 4 people, but it's nice they went to the effort.) The voice acting itself is okay. Of the time. There's really only one nitpick I can make here, and it has to do with a very flat line read that Mia's voice actress has for casting spells. Like, it's "Summon elemental powers 😑." Just like that. The emoji is built in. Completely devoid of enthusiasm. Otherwise, everybody's doing their best to keep lip synced and in character. It's a bit of its time, but it's fine.
Also—I suspect there may be a programming flaw based on audio sample retrieval. I had a soft lock with the game when it failed to load that particular line in one battle, and the game just refused to continue without that being played. There really needed to be a timeout for that function.
In addition to vocal work, the game has a plethora of animated cutscenes. Like the voice acting, their style and production are very of their time. Mostly, digitally redrawn from hand-drawn cells and processed with Quicktime/Adobe Premiere. It's not the highest quality animation ever, but for how much is there and the budget these developers had, I think they've aged well enough. There are some 3D models in the mix that aren't particularly great, but at least they didn't put their whole stock into using them, either. It's more in the Rough Draft studios style where they used it for machines or large buildings.
There's a lot of side mouths going on, though. Might drive a few people nuts.
Finally, the game's music has been updated. Of note are the themes "Wings" and "Wind Nocturne," which both feature actual goddamn singing. Between these two, "Wind Nocturne" is genuinely the better song, particularly in English. (The Japanese lyrics for this song are just too on the nose, especially if you know where the plot is going.) "Wings" is okay, I guess. I don't like it because of how tepid it is, especially compared to the Sega CD's "Fighting Through the Darkness." Like, "Wings" is more complex in terms of musical structure, sure. It's a crime to lose the drive and energy from "Fighting Through the Darkness," though.
The rest of the music? Eh. Fine. C. Nothing I'm going to be downloading. Not like "FIGHTING THROUGH THE DARKNESS! ALL IS EVIL, STILL WE MUST PRESS ON—"
Hey. Liking cheese is a part of getting through this game. And the translation is very loose and cheesy. Naughty, too. It reminds me of the days when you could theoretically trick one's parents into buying a hyper sexualized or violent anime at a Suncoast. Not that I did. The nearest Suncoast to me was in Sioux Falls. The best I could pull off was hanging around old Geocities and Tripod sites, trying to figure out what was censored out of the English releases of "Sailor Moon" and "Tenchi Muyo." Oh, and the one time IFC was airing the 1980s "Vampire Hunter D" movie. (Look—for as much as American TV is censored, you will remember the times you saw boobs on air.)
Was that enough dated references for you?
Being dated is a bit of a problem with "Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete." Even as a revamp, the best portions of this game are all easily obtained with either a visit to YouTube or The Spriter's Resource. I mean, bam. Motivation for bromide hunting is literally gone that quick. (Well, unless you're a completionist, I guess.) Not that the game's developers could have predicted the rise of YouTube, but the company mentions its own website in its documents. It was on the beginning edge of the Internet's rise to common use and power, and unfortunately, that same tool can easily share the best parts of the game without the game itself. (Okay, the game itself, too. Let's not pretend to be naïve about that.) It's just something to consider when deciding whether or not to play a game or if you plan on building a game of your own. The game itself has to be good, you know? It can't just be about flashy trappings anymore.
Also, as you may have sussed out, the game's target audience is pervy teenage boys. You know how people today get creeped out by Ariel and Jasmine's ages? The whole emphasis on them being sixteen and being in questionably inappropriate attire/situations for their ages? That problem's here too, but with a fifteen-year-old wearing what may only be erotic to magical clowns getting her brain scrambled into simultaneous ultimate power and complete submission to the villain. Yep. Yep. There's your warning!
The actual game portion of this game was the main reason I struggled wanting to continue playing it. When it's behaving, it's a vanilla turn-based RPG. Keynote: behaving. Several dungeons like to throw either restrictions or status ailments at you. This can be as benign as messing with player controls. It can also include robbing HP, MP, or entire party members as it sees fit. Even the last dungeon has two floors where it inflicts the party with random sleeping, which effectively locks you out of using two party members at the beginning of each battle at random (and possibly, them getting killed if they are targeted for an attack.) And yes, this does persist into a boss fight!
What really pissed me off about this game was something I learned completely on accident. See, I'm a somewhat regular visitor to The Cutting Room Floor. I like learning about what has been changed between various versions of a game, as well as what was intended to be buried by the developers. I know I have no way to prove this, but I accidentally ended up on the "Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (Playstation)" page by clicking on the "random page" option. (I was hunting for dirt on "Lupin the Third" games at the time and got bored.) And. Well. Why don't you go ahead and scroll down to those enemy statistics and get back to me?
Oh! And the bosses scale to your level! Isn't that nice?
The stat fuckery in this game bit me the hardest for two bosses in particular. I only managed to get past the Vile Crustacean through item abuse, as the party healer Jessica just can't heal enough to compensate for the damage you are taking at that point. (It's like healing 40 points vs. taking 60.) Also, unless you are forewarned well before that fight happens, you're not going to be able to load up two rejoining party members with healing items so that they can actually help in the fight. So, enjoy that.  The other one was the dog pair in the volcano (I think Bronze Dogs?). Not that they were the worst, but you get hard locked into that dungeon, so good luck if you run out of items.
I should also mention being frustrated with the menuing in this game. For some reason, it wants to default your first action on getting into a battle after booting the game to AI. And no. No. That AI? A wasteful parasite. Keep this game on manual at all times.
Also, have fun switching items around when your characters have a full inventory and want to slap on that nice, shiny bracelet you just picked up. I suppose I can't get too mad about the inventory situation because this is likely a remnant of an era where you had exceedingly limited memory for unique item storage. I.E., shit was probably in literal stacks or a hard-coded block. But, it's still annoying to work around.
Also, at the risk of spoilers—did you read on that TCRF page about what the programmers did to make sure that the player never got rid of Alex's Ocarina? That's the kind of hacky crap I'd expect out of freshmen programmers. Key item inventories exist for a reason, you know.
I think I played this game at the wrong time of my life. Not that I could have played it at either variants' original release time, but this was probably a game I should have tackled when I was 16-22 years old. Like, in high school or college. I was trying to use this game to ease back into playing longer video games again. (Working from home for six months fucked with my ability to long-term plan. Also, I spent several days working 14+ hours coding forms in July.) So, my patience for it just wasn't there.
Like, obviously, there are good parts to this game and good-hearted people behind it. (Ya know. Pervy shit aside.) I really liked party healer Jessica in particular. It's always nice to have a cleric that has the physical strength to hit shit until it stops moving. Even if the game is firmly locked in the 90s, that was a pretty fine decade. Probably the best one I've known. So, it's not the story or the older nature of the game that put me off, really. It just comes down to not having patience for a game that wants to drag things out.
I mean, I'm the first one to say not to give up on "Tales of Symphonia" until you meet Zelos Wilder. This game is kind of like that, but that point being hitting Disc 2 of 2.
I do anticipate on getting to "Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete" at some point. Might not be right away. I need a breather. But, I'm hoping my reaction to it will be like how I felt about "Shining Force 2" in comparison to "Shining Force." Hope's gotta spring up, right? Even when the world's screwed.
And no. 🙂 I do not anticipate on playing "Lunar: Dragon Song." 🙂 I saw a speedrun of that. 🙂 I'm good.
