AUDIO STORY
The Emergence of Joni Mitchell
"The Emergence of Joni Mitchell," is a two-hour examination of one of the most heralded songwriters of her time. In this third installment of his series on the seminal work of important figures in popular music, Ingles and his guests explore how Joni Mitchell crafted her artistry and connected with audiences over four decades. Mitchell put the experience of being a woman and being human on artful display through her blatantly honest and confessional lyrics, innovative open guitar tunings and jazz-inflected vocals. The program focuses on Mitchell's key releases to illuminate the musicianship of the woman "Rolling Stone" called "one of rock's most daring and uncompromising innovators."
By mixing Mitchell's music from these pivotal moments with informed commentary from musicians, fans, music critics and archival interviews with Mitchell herself, "The Emergence of Joni Mitchell" articulates what music lovers have found so compelling about this thoughtful and innovative writer and performer. Over 50 Mitchell songs are featured. Special guests include music writers Ann Powers, Anthony DeCurtis, Paul Zollo, Lydia Hutchinson and Holly George-Warren. Also featured are musicians Shawn Colvin, Lucy Kaplansky and others.
The two hour version is adaptable to a newscast necessary clock.

Preparations under way for a royal visit to Sydney
By Samantha Hutchinson and Stephen Brook for The Sydney Morning Herald
Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport flung open its arrival gates to international tourists on Monday for the first time in two years. And not a moment too soon given the preparations that are now officially under way to welcome a very, very important visitor Down Under.
Step forward Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.
Everyone’s favourite royal - we don’t have to pretend anymore, do we? - is pencilled in to attend the opening night of the Sydney Royal Easter Show as the guest of honour - if the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW and the state government are able to pull off what could be the most audacious plan in years.
The princess is the society’s president and patron across the Commonwealth.
Already, things are looking positive. This week, four representatives from Buckingham Palace jetted into Sydney for discussions on the potential royal visit and to scope out locations, an itinerary and how the trip would unfold. Within the state government, there are hopes the Princess Royal will be able to squeeze in a trip to some farming regions across the state at a time when agricultural production is booming.
And while NSW Governor Margaret Beazley is likely to be an official host of the princess while she is in Sydney, our bet is that Victorian Governor Linda Dessau is likely to be doing her best to ensure Victoria is also included in the royal visit. The princess was a stoic representative of Queen Elizabeth and the royal family at the Black Saturday memorial in 2009 where she stood alongside then-governor general Quentin Bryce, former Victorian premier Steve Bracks and state governor David de Kretser. She then toured areas ravaged by the fires. At the service, she praised the “individuals and towns [which] responded with resilience, ingenuity, courage and selflessness to situations that were changing at terrifying speed”. A message which still resonates today.
But we digress. It was only in September that this column put out the call to polish the ceremonial silverware and to ready the state’s red carpet for the potential arrival of Her Royal Highness at Easter. It’s good to see there’s been significant progress.

Romantic Fiction: Titles You Should Read
A Complicated Love Story Set in Space by Shaun David Hutchinson
When Noa closes his eyes on Earth and wakes up on a spaceship called Qriosity just as it’s about to explode, he’s pretty sure things can’t get much weirder. Boy is he wrong. Trapped aboard Qriosity are also DJ and Jenny, neither of whom remember how they got onboard the ship. Together, the three face all the dangers of space, along with murder, aliens, a school dance, and one really, really bad day. But none of this can prepare Noa for the biggest challenge—falling in love. And as Noa’s feelings for DJ deepen, he has to contend not just with the challenges of the present, but also with his memories of the past. However, nothing is what it seems on Qriosity, and the truth will upend all of their lives forever. Love is complicated enough without also trying to stay alive.
Happily Ever Afters by Elise Bryant
Sixteen-year-old Tessa Johnson has never felt like the protagonist in her own life. She’s rarely seen herself reflected in the pages of the romance novels she loves. The only place she’s a true leading lady is in her own writing—in the swoony love stories she shares only with Caroline, her best friend and #1 devoted reader. When Tessa is accepted into the creative writing program of a prestigious art school, she’s excited to finally let her stories shine. But when she goes to her first workshop, the words are just...gone. Fortunately, Caroline has a solution: Tessa just needs to find some inspiration in a real-life love story of her own. And she’s ready with a list of romance novel-inspired steps to a happily ever after. Nico, the brooding artist who looks like he walked out of one of Tessa’s stories, is cast as the perfect Prince Charming. But as Tessa checks off each item off Caroline’s list, she gets further and further away from herself. She risks losing everything she cares about—including the surprising bond she develops with sweet Sam, who lives across the street. She’s well on her way to having her own real-life love story, but is it the one she wants, after all?
Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto
1 (accidental) murder 2 thousand wedding guests 3 (maybe) cursed generations 4 meddling Asian aunties to the rescue! When Meddelin Chan ends up accidentally killing her blind date, her meddlesome mother calls for her even more meddlesome aunties to help get rid of the body. Unfortunately, a dead body proves to be a lot more challenging to dispose of than one might anticipate, especially when it is accidentally shipped in a cake cooler to the over-the-top billionaire wedding Meddy, her Ma, and aunties are working, at an island resort on the California coastline. It’s the biggest job yet for their family wedding business—“Don’t leave your big day to chance, leave it to the Chans!”—and nothing, not even an unsavory corpse, will get in the way of her auntie’s perfect buttercream cake flowers. But things go from inconvenient to downright torturous when Meddy’s great college love—and biggest heartbreak—makes a surprise appearance amid the wedding chaos. Is it possible to escape murder charges, charm her ex back into her life, and pull off a stunning wedding all in one weekend?
The Heiress: The Revelations of Anne de Bourgh by Molly Greeley
As a fussy baby, Anne de Bourgh’s doctor prescribed laudanum to quiet her, and now the young woman must take the opium-heavy tincture every day. Growing up sheltered and confined, removed from sunshine and fresh air, the pale and overly slender Anne grew up with few companions except her cousins, including Fitzwilliam Darcy. Throughout their childhoods, it was understood that Darcy and Anne would marry and combine their vast estates of Pemberley and Rosings. But Darcy does not love Anne or want her. After her father dies unexpectedly, leaving her his vast fortune, Anne has a moment of clarity: what if her life of fragility and illness isn’t truly real? What if she could free herself from the medicine that clouds her sharp mind and leaves her body weak and lethargic? Might there be a better life without the medicine she has been told she cannot live without? In a frenzy of desperation, Anne discards her laudanum and flees to the London home of her cousin, Colonel John Fitzwilliam, who helps her through her painful recovery. Yet once she returns to health, new challenges await. Shy and utterly inexperienced, the wealthy heiress must forge a new identity for herself, learning to navigate a “season” in society and the complexities of love and passion. The once wan, passive Anne gives way to a braver woman with a keen edge—leading to a powerful reckoning with the domineering mother determined to control Anne’s fortune . . . and her life. An extraordinary tale of one woman’s liberation, The Heiress reveals both the darkness and light in Austen’s world, with wit, sensuality, and a deeply compassionate understanding of the human heart.

The Taming of the Shrew(s)
By William Shakespeare
Directed and Adapted by Katharine Cognard-Black
September 24-26th Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm Sunday 2pm
Bucknell Hall Free Admission
Taking a fresh look at Shakespeare’s classic but challenging play The Taming of the Shrew, director/adaptor Katharine Cognard-Black ’21 will be exploring three interpretations of select scenes from The Taming of the Shrew(s) and will provide distinct, and sometimes even contradictory ideas, about gender dynamics within the play and in Shakespeare’s work. Cognard-Black’s new adaptation examines and questions the play’s complex depictions of gender and identity within a contemporary context.
“Shakespeare’s plays do not answer questions; they are not definitive about characters, themes, and concepts. Rather, they raise questions that are subject to interpretation of every new century, every director, every reader, and every sensibility.”
Emma Smith, author of This is Shakespeare

The Fall Theatre Mainstage 2021: Two Shows in Rep
Repertory theater, a method of producing theatre from a resident company in alternation or rotation, has been a popular style of offering plays through-out the history of Western theatre. The benefits of companies being able to produce multiple shows ‘in rep’ are many. In commercial theatre, companies can offer increased variety and riskier, more controversial productions when paired with (and subsidized by) plays that have been more popular in the past. The tradition of repertory theatre values a commitment to a more experimental rehearsal style, rich with time for exploration. This style tends to embrace a minimalist approach in small spaces, offering an intimate atmosphere within which audiences can experience plays more viscerally. Attention is also given to the possibility that costumes, props and sets can be interchangeable between productions in creative ways.
At Bucknell, we chose to explore the idea of two plays in-rep because we see the value in experimental projects as well as the rare opportunity for the audience to be up close to the story and the actors. More than that, we saw it as an opportunity for these two plays to be more profoundly in dialogue with each other. As we often enjoy in our theatre courses, the chance to read, compare and contrast two stories is a treat which inspires much conversation and gives us a richer understanding of the subject matter as a whole. In classes, comparing plays seen through the eyes of differently gendered playwrights can be astonishing. In our collaboration, the identities of the playwrights is just the beginning. We seek to compare, contrast and connect these two plays in multiple ways.
Two different families, two different time periods, two totally different settings seemingly having nothing in common - and yet each play is centered on the devastating complexities of race in America. What does it mean when a white family in the early 2000’s is forced to come to terms with a painful past steeped in oppression? What does it mean when a Black family in the mid 1950’s tries to imagine a better future and hurts one another trying to find their way forward? Further, how is the possibility of "family" formation pitched into crisis in the afterlife of slavery?
Do these two families have anything in common? Are they connected? Or are they merely ghosts in each other’s stories, haunting one another with secrets, pain, and the regret of choices never made. Our two plays in-rep: Appropriate by Brandon Jacob Jenkins and Crumbs from the Table of Joy by Lynn Nottage offer our community at Bucknell the chance to experience, question and struggle through the many ways in which all of our stories all intersect.
We are excited to present these two shows, not as separate productions, but as a connected project. Two plays, one stage. Two productions, one weekend. Two casts, one company. Two extraordinary experiences. One sensational program. Join us for the Bucknell Department of Theatre and Dance’s Fall Theatre Mainstage Productions 2021: Crumbs from the Table of Joy and Appropriate. It’s about time we look deeply at the challenging stuff that continues to haunt us, together.
- Anjalee Deshpande Hutchinson in partnership with Jaye Austin Williams
Crumbs from the Table of Joy
by Lynn Nottage
Directed by Dr. Jaye Austin Williams
Friday Oct 22 @ 7:30pm, Saturday Oct 23 @ 2 p.m., Monday Oct 25  @ 7:30pm
Tustin Studio Theatre     $12 general /$7 students
Crumbs from the Table of Joy tells the story of the Crump family - a recently widowed father, Godfrey, who heads up north to Brooklyn, New York from Florida in 1950, with his two daughters, Ernestine and Ermina. Ernestine, from whose perspective the story unfolds, wants to become a writer. She bonds fiercely with her dead mother's sister, Lily, who has already migrated north in search of a life beyond the formidable struggles black people are facing every which way, and a platform upon which to fight against them. Godfrey, in search of a sense of belonging to wrench him from his grief, takes solace in the teachings of Father Divine. Young Ernestine studies these two survival strategies and draws some conclusions of her own when, by play's end, we find she has foreseen more of the twists and turns to come than we could ever dare imagine.
Congratulations and Welcome to the Cast of Crumbs From the Table of Joy:

Appropriate, by Brandon Jacob Jenkins, takes us on a journey to a decaying Southern plantation home whose deceased patriarch leaves behind an unexpected legacy for his estranged children returning to divide up the estate. The grown children include a disgraced high school principal, a wealthy New York businessman, and the black sheep of the family who climbs through a window after having been disconnected for over a decade. In addition to bringing their own baggage to this dysfunctional family reunion, each sibling brings their new family members, including a wife, children, and a fiance. As they begin the process of painstakingly going through the contents of their father's years of hoarding to give, sell or throw away his treasures they come across a disturbing photo album. One which contains nothing but page after page of photos of black men being lynched. The family’s discovery about their father cuts right to the heart of their identities; as individuals, as a family, and as a part of an American history they thought they understood. Part ghost story, part family drama, part black comedy; Appropriate offers an unflinching look at one American family and their very own racial reckoning.

Lewis Hutchinson (1733-1773)
Tumblr media
Lewis Hutchinson, also known as the Mad Master, was a Scottish immigrant to Jamaica, and was the 1st recorded serial killer in Jamaica’s history, as well as one of its most prolific. It is believed that he studied medicine in Scotland. Hutchinson came to Jamaica in the 1760s to head an estate called Edinburgh Castle. It is said that he legally obtained ownership of the house but that he maintained his group of cattle by stealing strays from neighbours. This wouldn’t be the only accusation made about Hutchinson. Shortly after his arrival in Jamaica, travellers started disappearing, and suspicion grew. Edinburgh Castle was the only populated location for miles on the way from Saint Ann’s Bay, and unsuspecting travellers would rest at the castle – only to become victims of the Mad Master. Hutchinson killed for sport, what would be described today as thrill killing, as people of all races, shapes, sizes, and incomes were considered fair game. It’s not entirely known what is true about Hutchinson’s murders – he would shoot lone travellers and was said to feed on their blood before dismembering them. According to some sources, he or his slaves would then throw the remains into a cotton tree or a sinkhole for animals to eat. The sinkhole became known as “Hutchinson’s Hole”. At the height of his killing spree, he would invite guests to the castle to be entertained before killing them.
Hutchinson’s reputation meant that many would avoid him through fear. His slaves’ tales of awful treatment and the gruesome details of his killings made him a legend – this is why he was allowed to be free for a time, until he shot John Calendar, an English soldier who was attempting to apprehend Hutchinson. After shooting Calendar, he ran south to Old Harbour and boarded a ship. The Royal Navy, commanded by Admiral Rodney, caught him before he could escape. Shortly after his arrest, Lewis Hutchinson was tried and found guilty. In 1773 he was hanged in Spanish Town Square. Although his final murder count is unknown, searches carried out in his home after his arrest turned up a large amount of clothes and 43 watches. During his trial, slaves’ stories suggested that he did not act alone. Planter James Walker and Roger Maddix were sentenced to death for their roles in the murders of farmer William Lickley and schoolmaster Timothy Cronin. Dorcas, Maddix’s wife, Miss Susanna Cole and Miss Elizabeth Thomas watched Cronin’s death by strangulation as he was pinioned in stocks. Cronin’s watch and seal were found in Thomas’ possession – she was found not guilty.

Dramaturg Guy Cools veranschaulicht eine gewünschte Form von Missinterpretation von Zeichen sehr schön mit Charles Sanders Peirce: „The signs we create are invitations to be interpreted.“ - „which you misread as 'interrupted' and which makes a lot of sense too.“ Mira Loew beleuchtet in diesem Sinne auch die Lücken, Verfremdungen und Ergänzungen ihres Projekts.
Dunlops „possibility as a space“ könnte Pate für David Altwegers Exercises in Storytelling 1-3 (2017) sein. Was passiert in diesen mysteriösen Bildern?

Page 6: A Delaware state trooper went above and beyond the call of duty when he surprised a little boy with a brand-new pair of Steph Curry sneakers -- Trooper Joshua Morris and nine-year-old Ra'kir Allen got to be pals when they played basketball together, along with other youths in the area and when the good-hearted cop learned that Ra'kir thought NBA star Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors was his idol, he got an idea, and after running the idea past Ra'kir's mother, the cop presented the aspiring sports star with his own pair of shoes -- Morris says cops should never be strangers to the people they protect, and he lives his belief every day
Page 7: Screen legend Bette Davis believed she had psychic abilities, says her assistant Kathryn Sermak, who met the legend in 1979 and was hired within five minutes of meeting her -- as her personal assistant, she was at Bette's service 24 hours a day, but the star was also very generous like if they were going to a film set, the job was seven days a week, but when it was over, she'd give Kathryn a paid vacation anywhere she wanted for as much as six weeks -- few people know that the screen idol loved to pull practical jokes on people; for instance, at cocktail hour, Bette would serve drinks in gag glasses that dribbled, and then when the liquid would pour onto her guests' expensive dresses or suits, she would innocently ask if they were okay -- the assistant also knew Bette's only child, Barbara Davis Hyman, known as B.D., whose father was Bette's third husband, Grant Sherry. Bette and her next husband, Garry Merrill, her co-star in All About Eve, also adopted two more children, Michael and Margot Merrill, but diagnosed with brain damage at age three, Margot has spent her life in institutions

It's a mix of doctor-recommended treatments and those from their own research

Page 20: Cover Story -- Queen Elizabeth is on the warpath -- palace aides are walking on eggshells around Her Majesty ever since Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle dropped the bombshell on American TV that the royal family is a racist mess who completely ignored Meghan's mental health problems, among other horrifying accusations, and the queen will never get over the fact that Harry, without warning, turned his back on his own country and the people Elizabeth has served every day of her 95 years and she's also terrified the royal family's circus-like antics will bring on the end of the monarchy
Page 22: A California couple who were just about to retire drastically changed their plans when they adopted seven children -- Pam and Gary Willis have five children of their own and have been foster parents to many others and just as their last child was about to leave home, Pam spotted a Facebook advertisement searching for a forever home for seven kids from ages 15 to 4 whose parents had been killed in a tragic car crash -- Pam says she couldn't stop staring at their faces, saying she can't explain it, but she just knew she was supposed to be their mom and when she told Gary, she thought he'd call her a wacko because they were just about to retire, but surprisingly he agreed and they both felt it was what God wanted them to do
