Garden Report 20.2.29
Funny how plants sometime remind you of people. Perhaps it was a plant you have in their honour or was gifted to you or perhaps they are some plant that just remind you of them. I associate glads with my maternal grandmother and calendulas with my paternal grandmother. Lilacs with my great aunt (and chocolate covered cherries with cordial), snowball plants and lemon squirt under the hedge of snowballs of my mother’s eldest sister.
Today as I was pulling up buttercups and onion weed  Asphodelus fistulosus.  I was reminded of my cousin Leah. Leah was/is/ could be still (she is angry at me and won’t speak to me) a malcontent every since I can remember. She was the child who came in with dirt clods and leaves mixed in her berry bucket or the child that would pick a huge bouquet of dandelions and blow them all over this one neighbors manicured, perfect lawn.... and Leah loved onion weed. Even as an adult she would pull them out of peoples rubbish heaps in the alleys, dig them up along the road side and then plant them thickly along her neighbors adjoining fences.
So I have onion weed colonies I have been dealing with in this garden (not because of Leah). It is an ongoing process.  They are now pretty thick and getting ready to bloom in the remaining strongholds. I have a new patch that started in my glads. I am carefully trying to weed them out because they will kill my newly emerging gladiolas.  I can see the glads tender little heads poking through the soil and here are these big, stinky, slimy ‘flowers’ taking up precious space, nutrients, sun and all the goodness these poor little glads need.  Then I slipped into contemplation thinking about God being the ultimate Gardener and how He watches over us, taking out the big, slimy, stinking weeds in our lives if we just let him. Or how some people are the big stinky slimy weeds and just won’t give way to the goodness around them, just covering everything in their path with rotting stink and blocking out the goodness of others …. yeah, I can get pretty deep in the garden and not just in mud :)
Finally got the garden berries out of the front and planted to the back. I also planted Mary’s lemon tree in the ground.  It was a kick; today she demanded “how’s my lemon tree? have you killed it yet?” She is so funny but I do live in dread that I will kill it and she will want it back. No, I did not put it in the ground to kill it; it is just so unhappy and soggy-cold being in that pot in the garden. My soil has a good percentage of natural sand and with it warming, I am hoping it will all even out for the poor thing.
I still have ants in the worm bin.  I threw the top layer out the door with a goodly amount of ants then proceeded to sprinkle mint tea across the top. I don’t know if it is myth or fact (I know they do not like fresh cut pennyroyal) but it won’t hurt.  I did see a bunch crawling all over a worm but the worm didn’t mind and it didn’t look like they were biting/ eating/ hurting the worm but I don’t know about the infant worms or the worm eggs. So I am also smashing the ants as I see them. I am hoping they don’t think to get in the bags of potting soil … or maybe (!) that is where they came from. That will be sad. Now I will have to take a look at it tomorrow if its not pouring rain.
