#Ayoade on Top
Text
I'm currently listening to the Ayoade on Top audiobook once again and I love Richard Ayoade so much. He really saw View on Top and thought it was so terrible that he needs to write a whole book to pick it to pieces (in a highly hilarious and eloquent fashion of course).

Flick of Flight
#BOOKREVIEW - Flick of Flight - #AyoadeOnTop #blog
Through an analysis of the argued-to-be-brilliant nuances found within the mostly forgotten 2003 airplane dramedy View From the Top, Ayoade on Top by Richard Ayoade explores and comments upon those nuances in greater detail while he takes readers on a humorous ride throughout his book about a movie about a journey. Written with plenty of cheeky asides, clever footnotes, and an entertaining index…

I haven't read Richard Ayoade's book on View From the Top (because I do not yet have a copy), but I hope that it includes a scientologist reading of the film. I say this because there is a lot of cultist behaviour displayed by multiple characters in the film and some of it can be ascribed to the organisation that (allegedly) killed Shelley Miscavige.

As a follow up to my favorite books of the first quarter of the year, here are some of my favorites from April, May, June! In no particular order, just in the order I read them.
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty is a fun, pirate fantasy adventure featuring one of my recently realized favorite tropes: getting the band back together. A retired female pirate just wants to live a quiet life raising her young daughter, when she is recruited to rescue the child of a former crewmate. She must reunite with her old crew and save the day. Killer cover, fun story.
Chlorine by Jade Song is a coming of age body horror novel about a teenaged girl who will do anything to become a mermaid. Slow burn- you know what will happen from the beginning, but it's a deep dive into the mind of this queer young swimmer to watch her get there.
Malice by Keigo Higashino is a Japanese novel translated by Alexander O. Smith about a detective determined to uncover the motive behind the murder of a famous novelist. Loved this why-done-it.
We See Each Other: A Black, Trans Journey Through TV and Film by Tre'vell Anderson is a nonfiction exploration of Black trans representation in pop culture and history, as well as moments from the author's own life. Looks at everything To Wong Foo to Pose to Survivor.
Don't Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones is the second book in the Indian Lake Trilogy. SGJ is my favorite horror author but his work and ESPECIALLY these books are not for everyone. People either love or hate this series and what can I say? I get it. Graphic here.
VenCo by Cherie Dimaline is about a young Indigenous woman who has to go on an adventure with her unusual and elderly grandmother after she discovers that she's one of seven witches to usher in a new era of power.
Madame Restell by Jennifer Wright is a nonfiction book about a famous abortionist in pre-Gilded Age New York. I found it fascinating, if not incredibly depressing, with how much we recycle the same arguments over and over again. Great read. Trigger warnings for this one, from childbirth to abortion to racism to misogyny.
Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati is a Greek mythology retelling on the titular murderer. As a Clytemnestra apologist, I really liked this. I kind of think so many of Greek retellings these days are all very similar, in writing style & theme so I feel like if you've read one of these recent retellings you've read them all, but I liked it!
Hamra & the Jungle of Memories by Hanna Alkaf is a Little Red Riding Hood retelling set in modern Malaysia, where a girl in a red hijab must help a tiger return to his human form. Really a beautiful story about humanity, grief, and what it means to make mistakes. Also just a fun adventure. Loved it. Graphic here.
You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron is another final girl horror novel. Look, I'm gonna read all of them and I'm gonna love all of them! You give me a final girl and I'm gonna eat it up. You give me a queer Black final girl trying to survive the night at her camp recreating a famous (fictional) horror movie while trying to protect her girlfriend? Yum, yum, yum.
Honorable mentions: Ayoade on Top is Richard Ayoade's definitive tome on the Gwenyth Paltrow film View From the Top. Get the audiobook for this one for sure! The Three Dahlias is a fun cozy mystery, and Saint Juniper's Folly is a fun queer modern fantasy adventure.

I haven't done one of the Chortle roundup posts in a while, mainly because I just haven't seen that many headlines on there that have particularly grabbed my attention. But when I opened the website yesterday, the two at the top seemed worth a screenshot.
Tumblr media
What a combination. I have to admit I've dropped off from following The News Quiz lately, for the first time since I first got into it in about 2009, back in the Toksvig days. Followed it through the Miles Jupp days and into the Zaltzman days.
So you'd think I'd have gotten more obsessed with it as I became increasingly obsessed with Andy Zaltzman due to The Bugle, but it sort of had the opposite effect. The News Quiz feels like a somewhat watered down version of Andy Zaltzman, where I can hear him make a lot of the same jokes he makes on The Bugle that week (not that I blame him, he can't be expected to turn over two sets of material every week), but with certain parts cut, for time and/or BBC radio rules and/or format points. I'd rather hear him in the format where he's allowed to go on as much as he wants with fewer restrictions. And most News Quiz guests who are all that great get invited onto The Bugle anyway, so I hear them there.
In early 2023, I started skipping News Quiz episodes if they featured a TERF or a Tory. By mid-2023, I was noticing how often I skipped episodes, and realizing just how frequently they feature one of those was souring the program in my mind. It's worth noting that zero of the TERF or Tory guests have ever turned up on The Bugle, meaning it's not Andy's choice to have them on The News Quiz, I assume it's a BBC balance thing.
The final straw of a long loosening of that show's grip on me came when those quotes about Graham Linehan's book came out and we were all disappointed (but not, like, completely and utterly shocked) in Richard Ayoade, but Simon Evans had added a supportive quote as well. Simon Evans is one of the Tory comedians who turns up on The News Quiz fairly regularly, and I'd thought of him as someone who will make me skip an episode, but not that bad really, I disagree with him but he's not one of those really hardline right-wing horrible people. Is how I thought of him, until I read that he'd thrown his lot in with the absolute worst of them in the Linehan quote, and then I decided that his regular inclusion on The News Quiz is enough to make me not just skip his episodes, but not want much to do with the show anymore. Like I said, I don't blame Zaltzman at all (if Simon Evans turns up on The Bugle that's a different story, but I can't imagine that happening). It's a BBC thing.
Cancel culture, I know. Sorry, right wing. I'm personally canceling all of you by not wanting to take the horrible viewpoints I listen to every day in serious news and then hear them in my entertainment as well.
Anyway, that all makes that Chortle headline extra hilarious. Picking The News Quiz as their example of anti-right wing bias. I was about to write several paragraphs here about why that is bullshit, but actually it's 6 AM and I have to get up for work soon and I cannot be bothered. Everyone reading this already knows why that is bullshit, and I'm at a point in my life where if anyone doesn't know, I don't want to waste energy explaining it, I just want to not hang out with them. Cancel culture, I know. I'm a big fan of cancel culture these days.
Having said all that, that second headline is really worth a look. This is a bit of a ridiculous thing to say given the subjective nature of the genre, but that stand-up show - the tour that Nish Kumar's just announced (via his mailing list that the Chortle article pretty much just copy-pasted, everyone should get on his mailing list so you can get your comedy news from correctly spelled sources, usual disclaimer that I reserve the right to make fun of Chortle misspelling things even though my Tumblr blog misspells things because no one pays me for my Tumblr blog) - might be the best stand-up show. Like. Of all stand-up shows out there. It might be the best one. Nish might do his tour in late 2024 (following an Edinburgh run, that I desperately hope will include dates in the first week of the festival because I would love to see the finished show live) and then everyone might be able to just pack and up and say "Well, it's okay that the world's ending, because at least stand-up comedy has been done to perfection. We can all move on now." (I mean, except some people on some comedy message boards whom I'm pretty sure won't like him no matter what he does, and also I guess the Daily Mail won't like him no matter what he does for very different reasons, sorry he's not Fin Taylor and some people stand for something, also sorry for dedicating a sentence of my Tumblr post to responding to a message board post I saw last week for which no one on this website has context, I'd say about 5% of my posts these days are doing that.)
I realize this is a weird thing to say about a tour that hasn't started yet, and a show that hasn't been completed yet. But I've heard some of the WIP material, and if you put all that material together, and wrap it around some structure and stuff - which is what I assume Nish Kumar intends to do before touring it as a full hour - I'm pretty sure that's a recipe for the best stand-up comedy show I've ever heard. Absolutely everyone who has the ability to do so should check this show out. I think Nish Kumar's at his best ever right now, and that means a hell of a lot when you consider how much I've venerated his previous stuff. He keeps improving on perfection and I think everyone should just stop bothering making comedy after this one. After I get the chance to gaze upon the eighth wonder of the world in Edinburgh 2024, that is.

just wanted to say i'm in a similar situation to you with the ayoade situation although personally i've been just. trying to avoid talking/thinking about it bc it's too painful & just hoping none of my friends comment on it so i don't have to engage with it. but tonight it's finally hitting in a way i can't ignore it anymore..... it really feels like a betrayal which sounds so silly since i Don't Actually Know The Guy but.... just spending years feeling like his films were tapping into some part of *me* that hasn't always been understood. and then finding out how he really feels about.... people *like me.* that hurts no matter what. ESPECIALLY since it seems so out of left field & almost out of character for him based on what he's put out there of himself in the past? it just feels like i've been deceived somehow on top of everything? idk it's a weird, shitty time
yeah i'm right there with you... i really felt like his films and he as the creative mind behind them understood me in a way that most people don't. and now...this. i feel you, it does feel silly to call it a betrayal but i don't think we can really help how we feel about art and artists in these sort of situations when there's such strong and deeply personal feelings at play. weird shitty time for sure. i'd recommend talking about it if you can, though, or at least some form of journaling or putting it into words somehow, doing that has helped me a lot.

I've gone down a rabbit hole of the Big Fat Quiz of the Year and it's spinoffs. It's all I'm watching. When I close my eyes I see Richard Ayoade and hear Jimmy Carr's laugh. Jack Whitehall and Jonathan Ross are eating. Noel Fielding is dancing with Russel Brand and they're wearing over the top clothing
On a side note, 2022's hasn't been fully uploaded to YouTube yet so I'm outsourcing

Rhys with a beard, Jeff Goldblum, Jemaine just some names floating about- I spend a little too much time thinking vaguely, but obsessively about Izzy Hands and his probable past and potential scenarios. This is a subjective masterlist of redemptive endgame boyfriends and the actors who might slot into OFMD as Izzy's intended.
Tumblr media
I'm not a very thorough or expansive thinker, so this is purely a speculation/headcanon exercise and not an attempt at meta. I just want Izzy to find some solace and an ideal counterpart whether it's reconciling with the past or finding acceptance in the future. I dig the idea of the show being about changing or accepting your true self at any age. I think Izzy can get there, and I'd love for him to have a companion who helps him in that journey or is a reward towards the end of it.
Firstly some potential endgames:
#1: He dies in efforts to save Ed/Stede/Revenge crew. I'm ok with this outcome but would hope his internal/external conflicts are resolved. Maybe he and Stede have to work together and find some mutual respect doing so. Same with Lucius. A kiss is in here somewhere.
#2. Ed retires with Stede but another pirate takes over for Blackbeard and Izzy is his first mate. He's had many "come to jesus" moments and this new Blackbeard is his match in every way.
#3. Same Blackbeard retires with Stede/fakes his death and Izzy takes over the mantle/captaincy. Maybe he has his own first mate/scribe who idolizes him/appreciates his expertise
#4. We learn about his past and the owner of the ring is still alive and back on the scene or they are dead but their backstory together is heartbreaking.
#5. Same as number 3, but it's Anne Bonny or Mary Read, or both! This is maybe better suited to Frenchie, but could be good for Izzy too.
I prefer to keep Ed and Stede's relationship separate/sacred for the time being.
Ok now the fun part casting. Con has crafted such a nuanced and batshit committed performance, some actors I feel better suited to match his ferocity. I was thinking about them in categories - you have your queer actors, taika universe actors, my faves, good fits, wishful thinking - basically a giant mix. I'm gonna list them with the scenarios I think they best fit.
Lee Pace 2,4
Luke Evans 2,4
Ian McKellan 2,3,4
Andrew Scott 2,3,4
Richard Armitage 2,4
Jemaine Clement 2,3,4
Rhys D with a beard 2,4
Rory Kinnear as a 3rd character 2,3,4
Jeff Goldblum 2,4
Kayvan Novak 2,3,4
Matt Berry 2
Richard Ayoade 2,3
Dev Patel 2,3
Oscar Isaac 2,3,4
Mark Ruffalo 2,3,4
John Cho 2,3
Andrew Garfield 2,3,4
John Gallagher Jr. 3
Russell Tovey 3
Harvey Guillen 3
Ben Schwartz 3
Hugh Laurie 2,4
Richard E Grant 2,4
Richard Jenkins 2,4
Anjelica Huston 5
Valerie Mahafey 5
Katherine Moenig 5
Naomi Harris 5
Sofia Boutella 5
Ideally want someone adept at comedy, but with a depth of emotion and also banked menace that's why my top pick is Andrew Scott. Here's my near and dear rom com trope to mine: They get a new crew member, a little nerdy, straight cliche with glasses and everything, math whiz. Izzy's teaches him his navigation techniques/calculations and newbie is so impressed - praise ensues, methods expanded. Then there's a raid/fuckery and glasses come off She's All That style and a lethal, vicious pirate emerges. Izzy's heart is lost.

ok. this will be fun but playlist for your life right now? with explanations on why you like them / how they related to you. (idm whether its 5 or 20 songs, i need recommendations and i need explanations AHAHA)
omg best question ever award. initially I wanted to keep this like ‘album length’ (max 15 songs) but we’ll see how it goes :’) also so sorry this took like forever I kept changing everything LMAO
track 1 — ‘the 1975’
being funny in a foreign language, the 1975
a pretty obvious choice for the opening song. was a toss up if it was either going to include the bfiafl version or the self-titled version — in the end decided to go with the bfiafl version because of the lyric “I’m sorry if you’re living and you’re seventeen”, because I am seventeen. therefore it was more appropriate to include this one whilst I can! like I said, I was undoubtedly going to start with a version of ‘the 1975’ because it’s the perfect representation and reset of the things that I love.
track 2 — ‘you belong with me (taylor’s version)’
fearless (taylor’s version), taylor swift
now the next two songs are basically the representation of my childhood. before I even fully knew who taylor actually was, I was obsessed with watching the music video for this song and I was absolutely in love with it. when I got older and went my own way before finding my way back to her, the amount of nostalgia I got from this song was insane — making me love her even more now. fearless will forever & always (pun!!!) be my favourite taylor album.
track 3 — ‘red (taylor’s version)’
red (taylor’s version), taylor swift
much like you belong with me, the whole red album was the album that I actively remember listening to the most when I was in primary school and actually grasped taylor as a person for the first time. madness to think how full circle I’ve actually come now that I’m going into year 13 (over a decade later).
track 4 — ‘roxanne’
outlandos d’amour, the police
this has been one of my top spotify songs for quite some time, and I first started listening to it because it came from one of my favourite films / musicals of all time — moulin rouge! my uncle also has the picture disc for this album (if my memory serves me right) so it’s also nostalgic to have that family connection to it, I always love what music is capable of doing in terms of relationships. it’s absolutely magical.
track 5 — ‘stuck on a puzzle’
submarine soundtrack, alex turner
I was introduced to this song through the film ‘submarine’ (richard ayoade) as it was one of my set texts for a-level media studies. majority of my class heavily disliked the film, but it instantly shot to one of my favourites of all time — the cinematography along with the soundtrack is some of the most masterful work I’ve ever had the pleasure of viewing. the lyrics themselves in the song also just gives me that mellow feeling when listening to it (as alex turner’s voice itself is amazing). I’m also welsh, so watching the film gives me the same feeling as gavin & stacey, constantly picking out locations that I know and also sharing almost the exact same accent as to the ones in the film haha!
track 6 — ‘thick skull’
this is why, paramore
these next few songs I’ve placed in the playlist to sort of represent my long battle with mental health problems (which I’m very happy and proud to admit that currently I’m the happiest I have ever been since I was like 9 lol), and thick skull does that perfect representation (also whilst being sung by hayley williams, what more can a girl ask for). the sinking feeling that I get from listening to this song truly does feel like drowning in the best of ways, mimicking that battle that you have to have with yourself. from the slow start to the layered buildup towards the end, it truly does feel like an explosion.
track 7 — ‘i always wanna die (sometimes)’
a brief inquiry into online relationships, the 1975
I feel like I am constantly talking about this song so I probably won’t elaborate on it that much, but from suffering with a personal loss that’s represented almost to a t through this song is why it’ll always be so important to me. from “your death it won’t happen to you, it happens to your family and your friends” to “if you can’t survive, just try”, anything else I could possibly say is in the lyrics themselves.
track 8 — ‘fine line’
fine line, harry styles
this songs included because it reminds me of one of my bestest friends in the entire world. although this doesn’t have the deepest meaning behind it, when we both went to a harry styles concert together, a group of girls in the row behind us snapped a photo of us hugging each other during fine line and it’s become my favourite photo of all time. I’ll include it at the bottom, so then this song just became our song :)
track 9 — ‘the crow & the butterfly’
sound of madness, shinedown
this song comes from one of my dads favourite albums, and the instruments in this song are just breathtaking. my nan also vehemently hates the idea of me getting tattoos, and when I asked her what I should get for her, other than being like don’t you dare; she said get a butterfly (with the most annoyed look on her face ever hahahah). therefore this song also reminds me of her :)
track 10 — ‘symptom of being human’
planet zero, shinedown
this other shinedown track is also included because one of the best concerts I’ve ever been too was on the planet zero tour. also, listen to this song and pay attention to the lyrics because it’s so emotional and the meaning behind it is insane. it really makes you feel seen and special!
track 11 — ‘i’m so sick’
flyleaf, flyleaf
this is included because it’s just one of my favourite songs of all time, and the vocalist on the track (lacey sturm) is just an absolute powerhouse! no other reason other than that hahaha.
track 12 — ‘aimee’
ozzmosis, ozzy osbourne
pretty obvious, it’s my name (and I love ozzy anyways).
track 13 — ‘funny how love is’
queen II, queen
queen have always and will always be one of my favourite bands of all time (as I’m absolutely in love with roger taylor) and queen II is just my absolute favourite album by them, and one of my tops of all time. this song reminds me of me first starting my vinyl collection and going record hunting for the first time, in which I bought first pressings of their debut self titled album and queen II.
track 14 — ‘all I need to hear’
being funny in a foreign language, the 1975
one of my favourites on the album that means so much to me, so had to include it for that reason. I love singing along to the track over any other 1975 song, and also getting to hear tim healy sing this live at finsbury was just magical.
track 15 — ‘sunshine baby’
in the end it always does, the japanese house
again, one of my favourite artists of all time, and one of my favourite albums of all time. this is my favourite song on the album and it just gives me vibes haha! some of my favourite flowing lyrics of all time as well, “the feeling when the windscreen wipers line up with the song”.
track 16 — ‘sincerity is scary’
a brief inquiry into online relationships, the 1975
had to include this because it comes from my favourite 1975 album, and I wanted to include it because I feel like it perfectly demonstrates meaningful but satirical lyricism.
track 17 — ‘mean (taylor’s version)’
speak now (taylor’s version), taylor swift
again, a pretty simple reason (I’m running out of things to waffle about at this point, only so many times can I say I love a song) but this one goes out to all the negativity that people have tried to feed into my life, because they will never define you :)
track 18 — ‘i am the fire’
into the wildlife, halestorm
halestorm are also another band that my dad introduced me too, and seeing them live for the first time and getting a pick from a concert for the first time will always be a stand out memory to me. also, I love the message behind the song and how uplifting it can be!
track 19 — ‘i bet you look good on the dance floor’
whatever people say I am that’s what I’m not, arctic monkeys
this song reminds me of my other best mate in the whole entire world, who I’ve known for years. she’s always been a bigger arctic monkeys fan that I have and I am so proud of her for accomplishing everything she has today. although she’ll never see this I’m so proud of her! more than she’d ever know.
track 20 — ‘left behind’
plush (released as a single)
from another one of my favourite bands of all time, this is their newest single release. it’s hard, it’s heavy, and I absolutely love jamming out to it. a girl rock band all under 22 — sign me up!
track 21 — ‘girls, girls, girls’
girls girls girls, mötley crüe
recently saw mötley crüe in wembley with my dad, and it was so emotional being able to see his all time favourite band with him. this was one of the first mötley songs that I ever listened to and realised oh shit my dad wasn’t lying!
track 22 — ‘give yourself a try’
a brief inquiry into online relationships, the 1975
favourite 1975 song. means so much to me. the message is just the most important.
track 23 — ‘people’
notes on a conditional form, the 1975
ending on a complete high, reminds of the end of finsbury (the best gig ever) when I absolutely lost my shit and had the most adrenaline ever. really sums up the person who I’ve become!
so turns out this was actually insanely difficult — listen time clocking in at 1hr & 27m. but this genuinely just sums up me as a person, absolutely all over the place, up and down, leaving you thinking ‘wtf is going on’. I hope you enjoy, and if you don’t recognise any of the songs, I would 110% recommend them :) (also could u tell I literally had to cut down so many the 1975 songs and couldn’t just have it all them LMAO)
bonus tracks:
forget (ashley suppa), all dead all dead (queen), epiphany (mammoth wvh), over there (the japanese house), nana (the 1975), I couldn’t be more in love (the 1975), nothing revealed / everything denied (the 1975)
