the injustice, unlimited plotline in infinity inc. is amazing. so the wizard gathers a bunch of old and legacy villains and blackmails infinity inc. and the global guardians into helping them. highlights from their evil plots:

artemis crock reunites with her loving parents by breaking them out of jail

hazard, the gambler's granddaughter, forces wildcat and tasmanian devil to get married in vegas

it's all part of her plot to force the casino to pay out to its patrons so yeah the marriage was the only actual crime:

anyway she's a villain for like two issues before she decides these people are losers and she's going to help the heroes not die

the shade takes lyta to get a trinket for his cane from some ruins, which just so happens to teach her about her unknown (after crisis bullshit) heritage

how does he know this? was he secretly helping a hero, again? no, no, he was definitely doing a villainy to power up his cane, which is definitely where his powers come from

"You're so messy." Jack laughed, looking over the girl sitting on the other couch, her head leaning on Luke's shoulder.

"Am not!"

"You kinda are." The youngest boy whispered, making Alanna gasp slightly.

"Trev's freaking out because of you." The middle Hughes brother announced, looking down at his phone. The girl rolled her eyes at his statement.

"He can survive one hour without talking to me." The singer said, making Luke chuckle slightly has his eyes focused back on the TV.

"Can you just answer him so he stops spamming me, please?" Jack begged as his phone rang over and over again. Alanna rolled her eyes once again before pulling out her phone.

Alanna scoffed as he eyes looked at the chain of message the Zegras boy had left her.

"Excuse me." She whispered before standing up from the couch and walking into the bathroom.

"Finally!" Trevor exclaimed as he answered her phone call.

"Leave Jack alone."

"Lanny, I am getting eaten alive in my comment section, and all you have to say is leave Jack alone?" The boy spoke, clearly being dramatic.

"Trev, just ignore it. No ones actually gonna send you their therapy bills or try to kill you."

"You don't know that." The younger boy sassed through the phone, making Alanna sigh.

"You kinda deserve it, babes."

"Hey!"

"You broke my heart!"

"But I also fixed it!"

"Yeah, and now you're Becky's number 1 public enemy." It was now her turn to sass the boy, who let out a gasp at her words.

"I am not! Becky loves me!"

"She said if you broke my heart again you're never gonna play hockey again."

"It's all jokes, baby. She doesn't mean it... I hope." The boy mumbled, making the girl giggle slightly. "I'm really proud of you, Lana." The boy added, all the playfulness in his voice gone. The girl smiled to herself in the mirror slightly.

"I'm proud of you too, Trev." The girl answered, and at the same moment, a manly voice spoke to Trevor in the background. The hockey player sighed a bit before focusing back on the girl.

"Listen, I gotta go back to training. I'll call you tonight, alright?" The boy announced, making Alanna frown slightly.

"I'll be waiting."

"I love you."

"I love you more, Trevs." The line disconnected after that, the girl now standing silently in the bathroom. Her phone screen black when she pulled it away from her ear and placing it into her pocket before walking back to the living room.

"I still can't believe you got back with him." Jack whispered after a couple of minutes of the three of them just watching the movie that was playing on the TV. The girl was now sitting on the same couch as Jack, since Luke had decided to lay down on the other.

The girl's eyes looked away from the screen and over to the boy, who was already looking at her. Luke's attention remained on the movie, not even hearing Jack's words.

"Do you think I'm being stupid?" The girl asked, her voice just as low has his. Jack nodded his head no, a slight smile appearing on his face.

"You make him happy, and he makes you happy. That's all that matters, Lanny. I don't know what he was thinking when... that happened, but he's so in love with you. When he came back from training camp in 2019, you were all he could talk about. It was always Lana this, Lana that. He's still like that." The boy mumbled, the memories of Trevor never being able to shut up for months because if the girl coming back to him.

"But that if that happens again?"

"Then he's the biggest idiot in the universe. You're the best thing that's ever happened to him, and he better be worshiping the ground you walk on for giving him another chance." The boy reassured her. Alanna would be lying if the thought of Trevor seeing other girls behind her back again wasn't constantly swimming inside her head.

"Thank you, for always being there for me."

"You're like my sister, Lanny, I'm always gonna be here."

Matthew wasn't sure if he should be so surprised by how resilient his son was. Hugh though wasn't looking very pleased. His expression was one of absolute exhaustion and worry. Gene of course picked up on this, honestly feeling slightly guilty over putting the alien through so much stress in such a short time. Matthew had shared that same worry over the mad scientist, knowing just how little time his son had to recover. Yet he couldn't say no. What would've that done? Make Gene all the more stubborn and make him do something just as rash as he did? No. He knew better than to do so. “As long as you don't overdo it. Of course. I don't think your friend could take much more of our recklessness.” Gene gave him an apologetic expression as he knew what his father said was true. “I know. I'm sorry Hugh. You know I have to do this. I'm not going to just stay in bed while all this goes down. I'll stay in bed rest after this all you want. I promise.” Hugh sighed, crossing his arms. “You wouldn't listen to me anyway. Don't you get yourself hurt during this or I swear I will strap you down and leave you like that while you heal up.” Gene couldn't help but let out a little laugh at that. He knew that the alien would absolutely do that. His eyes went back to the silver falcon in his hand. The mad scientist was still slightly worn out but he's never felt so revitalized like this. Given life anew in a strange way. It didn't take long for the mad scientist to get himself dressed. Alex and Tristan had wanted to intervene and keep him from joining but they knew that would've encouraged him more as well. Though that couldn't stop either of them from helping Gene. He gave them both a look that showed he wasn't going to let them coddle him. He's never let them do so before. Even when he wore himself down to the bone when Becky went missing. That thought had made him stop and looked around for her. Having lost track of the girl during his identity crisis. No one else seemed to have noticed until they heard a whoosh and saw Becky nearly tackled her father over. She hugged onto him, holding something with one hand. “Hey, kiddo. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to worry you again. I'll be fine, I promise. Confused but fine.” Becky looked up at him, still not quite believing him. She quickly then placed another item within his hand. It was the goop ray he had left behind during the chaos. She had gone back to find it to give it back to Gene. He stared down at it. “Aw, thank you for getting this for me.” In another city, they were unaware that there was another gathering. The mayor of Newport had just finished giving the heroes the go ahead to storm the B.E.A.W Labs near their city. They were met with a riled up crowd filled with villains, civilians and other heroes alike. They didn't appreciate that these people were messing with their heroes as well. Ones they've grown to love over the years. They were just as inspired by Maddrixs broadcast. Sure they were a bit more on the bloodthirsty side but they were nowhere near the level of Darius. He had angered them so much they've put aside their differences temporarily. Having a bigger goal to accomplish first before resuming the status quo. It was unsettling just how quiet they went when they had seen the heroes step out. Waiting with bated breath for them to give them instructions on exactly where to go. Hydro had been surprised to see an old friend among the crowd. J.J. the villainous jester. There were a few others they've recognized. The circus themed villains that loved to team up with the jester. A certain doll who was once part of the villain roster of Fair City. They were going to bring every single one of them to the facility. To wait for Maddrix the malicious to take lead and destroy the hellish place. Taking down all those who willingly worked within there. Experimenting on innocent lives. They weren't going to stand for it at all. Even Atomic Steele knew to finally put aside his fury whether he liked it or not. He still despised him but he trusted his friend despite what happened. He still cared.

It still felt weird to Atomic, learning all that he did about his father's biological relationship to Maddrix. From what that woman Margaret told him, it made the hero think back to moments of his childhood before the massacre. How his dad never talked about his grandfather only telling the boy he had one who died. His dad only talking in details about his grandmother. There were times his dad seemed sad and frustrated about something, when a younger version of Max tried asking his dad what was wrong, all his dad would say was that he was just worried about and missing someone. At the time Atomic had no clue his dad was referring to an estranged cousin. The last time Atomic saw his dad alive, before he told the young hero to stay put and safe, was when his dad was watching the television and seeing what was going on. Atomic clearly remembered his dad having a horrified look but also a pained and guilt ridden expression. Although Max still hated Matthew, there was a part of the young hero that took some pity on Matthew and his father's past. A part of him that was strangely glad his grandfather perished by Maddrix's hands. Gene was ready to leave with Matthew and the others to head back to city hall. He had finished assembling his gear and putting on his attire for battle. Hey this was a serious matter but Gene didn't want to look like a bum going into battle. He also was kind of unsure about putting on his old Dr. Two Brains attire, which was just his work clothes. So Gene decided to make a compromise combining his former villain attires with his own spin. With Alex's and Tristan's help, the two aliens gathered a new lab coat for Gene along with a new change of clothes. These clothes were in clean and pristine condition. They also helped him gather a top hat and a silver mask, something similar to his old Professor Terror outfit. He didn't have the original clothing since he burned his outfit after the massacre. There was also no time to add some special sequins or elegant designs to his clothing much to Gene's chagrin. Gene looked into the mirror one last time before he left with Matthew, Alex, and Tristan. Gene's still white hair was pulled back into a ponytail. This earned an odd reaction from Becky as she muttered "no sandwich words" which made Gene recall Becky once telling him about the Chucktopia incident. Becky otherwise reassured her dad that she wasn't bothered by his style. Gene's silver mask was similar to how his old one was. It was an eye mask with embedded designs. The top hat Alex got him was definitely something similar to a Victorian era top hat but with modern designs. Gene had kept his gloves as his hands were still altered. He had gotten rid of his usual goggles as he saw no reason to wear them over his mask. As Gene held his old staff in his hands, the one thing from his Terror days he could never part with, an eerie feeling went down his spine. He recalled memories of his past, when he first joined his dad into the field of villainy, when he lead his own rebellion of villains against his father, and when he took down Atomic Steele. That wasn't Squeaky in action nor was it connected to his old Two Brains gimmick. That was all him. Gene let out a sigh and small smile. He had no idea what he was going to do after everything was over. Gene definitely planned to give Steven back his name and identity since he was going back to his old name that had been established on official, yet forged, documents. Gene wasn't sure if he was going back into the field as a villain or take a break after everything he had been through. One thing that was for sure, Gene was going to determine his own path and no sabotaged experiments or crazy animals and people was going to affect what he wanted to do with his life from now on. Meanwhile back outside the hallways of the medical clinic, Matthew was learning one of the most shocking things in his life. "You were in the mafia!" Matthew exclaimed in a shocked tone. @dualnaturedscientist

Act I – The lie

“yeah mom, i’m going to becky’s wedding with a plus one,” you repeated for the thousandth time.

“but who’s the mysterious man?”

“you’ll see him on friday, i promise.”

“it’s really sad you and luke broke up, i wanted to see him so bad,” your mom reminded you of your failed relationship.

“can we please not talk about him?”

“sorry, darling.”

“anyway, i have to go, petey and i were going on a walk with milo.”

“tell him i said hi,” your mom said. “bye darling, have fun!”

“bye mom, love you,” you replied and hung up.

turning to elias, you started laughing like a crazy woman. “elias what the hell was i thinking saying i have a new boyfriend?”

“you were just desperate,” petey shrugged.

“yeah but now i’m supposed to take someone to cali in three days and i have no one.”

“i already said you could take me,” he shrugged.

“ew no, you’re like my brother, i couldn’t pretend you’re my boyfriend. besides, mom knows i wouldn’t date you.”

he stood silent for a few minutes while you thought.

“i have an idea,” elias finally broke the silence with something useful. “you remember quinn?”

“of course i remember him, i’ve spent a whole night making out with him.”

“gross but you could ask him to go with you,” he suggested. “the guy seems whipped.”

“don’t be so dramatic.”

“no i’m being serious, he gets all flushed just at the mentioning of your name.”

“shut up,” you laughed and rushed him, grabbing your dog’s leash.

alone at night, you thought about your situation. you needed someone to take to california with you as soon as possible and, besides petey’s suggestion, there was no one else you could ask. so you texted the last person possible, quinn hughes. the guy you made out while you were both at a team party and, if you were being honest, it was more than good.

hey, you up?

yeah, what happened? was his quick response.

can i ask you a question?

sure

would you go as my plus one to a wedding in california during all star break?

you sent the text and immediately shut your phone down, dreading his response. after a few minutes, there was still nothing from quinn, until your phone started buzzing and you saw his name and a cute picture on the screen. breathing in, you picked up.

“hm hi quinn.”

“hey,” he said and you could sense his nervousness. “would you care to explain the situation?”

sighing, you adjusted yourself on the cushion and started. “okay, a few months ago i was dating a guy named luke, my family loved him and bla bla bla but he cheated on me with my best friend, so of course we broke up. the thing is, my cousin is getting married and i don’t want my family to think i’m a failure, you know?”

“i’m very sorry, he didn’t deserve you,” quinn responded. “but why would your family think you’re a failure?”

“because they’re very traditional and of course for them a woman’s success is directly tied with a good relationship and kids and everything,” you said. “besides, i don’t want people asking me every five minutes why little lukey is not there and what happened.”

“get it,” was all that he said for a while. you two kept just hearing each other’s breathing through the phone while quinn thought.

“so,” he broke the silence. “i would have to pretend i’m your boyfriend?”

“pretty much.”

“all during this all star break?”

“yup.”

he spent a couple minutes in silence. “okay, i’m going with you.”

“really?” you said very loud. “sorry buddy.”

“yeah really, i want to help you,” he said. of course he wanted to help you, but also take the chance of his life with the girl that never left his thoughts since the first time you kissed.

“quinny i owe you my life, i really do,” you happily exclaimed. “i’m going to send you all the information you need, including a guide of my family so you don’t get lost.”

“i’d appreciate that,” he laughed. “well, see you… when?”

“thursday’s afternoon! see you at the airport, quinny, have a good night and thanks for saving my life.”

“it’ll be a pleasure,” he said and, after your goodbyes, he hung up.

after that, you and quinn started texting nonstop whenever you could catch a break from your daily routine and, if you were being honest, you were already having fun. he was a quick learner and you called him in your free times to talk more about your family and things he should know.

it was all a secret but it didn’t stop petey to tease quinn every remaining day asking about you and your family, while quinn just sighed frustrated and felt the heat on his face.

thursday idn’t take long to arrive and you were surprised by quinn at your door when you were getting ready. you honestly didn’t expect that when he asked for your address but it was very cute of him. not sure about the greetings, you just awkwardly hug and laughed and you invited him in.

“make yourself at home, i’m just finishing my makeup,” you told him. “you can turn the tv on and watch something or you can come with me to my room.”

he made a funny face and you noticed the double sense of the phrase.

“oh my god no, not in that way, i uh i just mean,” you stopped and started laughing with him.

“don’t worry, i got it,” he said. “we can study more about your family.”

“perfect! okay so yeah, you can come with me and sorry.”

he only giggled and accompanied you to your room and, while you finished your makeup, he talked about your family so you could judge his knowledge.

the way to the airport was good and it didn’t take long for you to arrive there. the waiting for the flight was bigger but you didn’t even noticed because the company was too good. he kept telling jokes and asking about your relatives and your life and you also got to know him more too and it was very good. he was so different from what other people thought it was funny.

at the flight, you’ve slept during most of it, while quinn read a book about something you couldn’t see. also, he was sweet and let you put your head on his shoulder to sleep better.

already in los angeles, you started feeling very nervous. noticing that, quinn held your hand, bent down and whispered “it’s gonna be okay, we got this.” while squeezing the back of your hand. you sighed, nodded and kept walking and it didn’t take long for you to see your mom and aunt already waiting for you.

their eyes shone seeing quinn and you wanted to sadly laugh because they were more excited to see a guy they’ve never heard of before than you, their relative and daughter.

when you were close enough, your mom clasped her hands together and said “so this is the mysterious boyfriend?”

quinn looked at you and smiled, “yes ma’am.”

“oh please, call me rosie! how’s your name again?”

“quinn, quinn hughes,” he shook her hand with his free one while both your mom and aunt looked at him like he was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. your aunt barbie was the next and, when quinn called her by name, she almost melted.

you forced a smile before saying “hey, i’m here too, you know”

“hi, my love,” your mom said less enthusiastically and hugged you, your aunt doing the same after her.

after that, you went directly to the car to go to the hotel where everyone was staying and, while quinn kept being the center of attentions, you stayed silent, just thinking.

you knew your mom loved you deeply, but sometimes you couldn’t help but think she liked the idea of you getting married and starting a family more than she liked you and that makes you sad. however, you kept loving her with all your being.

seeing you vaguely staring down, quinn shook your hand. “you ok, babe?”

“yeah, don’t worry,” you answered.

the interaction was quick and your voices were low but of course your mom and aunt heard everything and were smiling from ear to ear.

later, after your things were already in your shared bedroom, it was already time for dinner, when quinn would meet the rest of your family and of course you were scared.

“quinn,” you got his attention. “what if they don’t believe we’re dating for real?”

“they will, don’t worry,” he smiled.

“but they’re gonna ask everything and-“

“don’t worry,” he interrupted you and said again. “i’ve grown up with two brothers that got in trouble all the time, i know how to make people believe me.”

“really?”

he got up and stood in front of you. “really,” he said. “i would never make you look like a fool in front of your family.”

“thanks, quinn, you're the best.”

he smiled down at you and before he could say anything, you heard a knock on your door. “time for dinner, guys,” your cousin said.

Tangled Web Book Club: Jan 24th

"Now, in the days of petticoats, there were three different ways you could tell a girl that her petticoat was below her dress. You could tell it as a kindly friend who felt it a duty to help get matters righted as soon as possible before any one else noticed it, but who felt a sympathy with her as the victim of an accident which might happen at any time to yourself. You could tell it as a disinterested onlooker who had no real concern with the affair but wanted to do as you would be done by. Or you could tell it with a certain suppressed venom and triumph, as if you rather delighted in catching her in such a scrape and wanted her to know you saw the fatal garment and had your own opinion of any girl who could be so careless."

These words are nearly a hundred years old, yet they are almost exactly the same words told to me by an older woman 25 years ago. She talked about it in terms of a slip, and who wears slips any more? I hope that this advice is evergreen, no matter the garment. Her point was that our duty as humans is to always choose at least the disinterested option, even for our mortal enemy. It must have been a Sunday School lesson for the ages!

Frank Dark... lived in Saskatchewan, where his father, Cyrus Dark, had gone when his family were small, and where Frank and Hugh had been cronies during the years Hugh had spent in the west.

I love this little hat tip to LMM's time in Prince Albert.

Joscelyn, bewildered and terrified, had yet one clear thought in her mind--no one--no one must kiss the cheek where Frank's kiss had fallen. She gave them her lips or her left cheek blindly, but she kept the right to him.

I love this little echo of Gay refusing to kiss Aunt Becky hello because she had just kissed Noel.
