Hiatus kaiyote tour 2017
Tumblr media
Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote) at Woolly Mammoth Tune in today and catch Hiatus Kaiyote over the coming months. Through the ups and downs and the starts and stops of the process, Mood Valiant arrives as a symbol of the act of love, of courage, of altered perspective, of sister-and-brotherhood. Visit Hiatus Kaiyote’s Official Store for more information. The band were also recently announced as the headliners for Astral People’s 10th Birthday as part of 2021’s Vivid LIVE program and they will also play the rescheduled Bluesfest in Byron Bay come October. Taking the album on the road, Hiatus Kaiyote recently announced their Mood Valiant Australian tour, playing at some of the most beloved venues in Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. Furthermore, they have received glowing coverage from the likes of NME, Pitchfork, The Fader, Rolling Stone, The Guardian and more. Beloved across the globe, the Melbourne-based act have received praise from worldwide industry heavyweights, including Annie Mac, Gilles Peterson and Benji B on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music, as well as homegrown support from Double J, triple j and community radio stations nationwide. Also, it’s not everyday you get to ride a velociraptor in space.” Hiatus Kaiyote is Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield (guitar, vocals), Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keys), and Perrin Moss (drums). Can’t wait to share it and make more weird nerd art visuals for people to see. Jeremy was the ultimate legend, and all hands on deck were super loverly and creative. I’m usually pretty camera shy, but everything about this video was a joy to make. Nai Palm added about filming “Get Sun”, “I have never laughed more on set, ever. The band came to me with a huge idea that featured them attempting to get to the sun by various DIY methods, so we met up to chat over the concept and next minute we had a goddamn giant beast to create… I wanted it to look shitty and beautiful all in one, to be stoopid and breathtaking and to take you on a strange journey into the warped imagination of one of the dopest living bands.” Director Grey Ghost (Jeremy Koren) shares more about the concept behind the video: “The ‘Get Sun’ video is a wild and wonky space journey inspired by Red Dwarf, The Young Ones, Mighty Boosh & Le Voyage dans la Lune. The accompanying video takes an absurdist sci-fi trip, perfectly matching the single’s buoyant energy. Featuring Verocai, the track came together during a session in Australia’s Byron Bay, though Nai Palm had largely written the song before the band formed in 2011. Alongside the album release, Hiatus Kaiyote are also sharing the video for the album’s debut single, “Get Sun”. Behind everything is Hiatus’ familiar sense of musical adventure, their knack for making the complex sound simple, evident in previously-released singles “Get Sun”, “Red Room” and “Chivalry Is Not Dead”. The result is an album, bookended by Verocai’s strings, that relaxes into a groove: sunlit, beguiling, masterful. The follow up to their critically acclaimed 2015 album, Choose Your Weapon, Mood Valiant came together after six years during which the band spent time touring, writing and recording, culminating in a 2019 trip to Rio de Janeiro that led them to work with legendary Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai. Today, the twice Grammy-nominated group Hiatus Kaiyote share their highly anticipated new album, Mood Valiant, out via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune. Another giant leap for Hiatus Kaiyote.” – Guardian “Rousing.” – The FADER “…a blazing return that is packed with energy, fusing their jazz-leaning melodies with a potent sense of rhythm.” – Clash “Triumphant.”- Pitchfork “Mood Valiant…is an undeniable showcase of the band’s vast musical range and talent for arrangement.”- NPR Praise for HIATUS KAIYOTE “Mood Valiant is both spacious and ebullient…. This weeks guest is not from Adelaide, but after i heard her music I had to find out more about how she got into music and more. Here is Majelen.
Can you tell us a little about Yourself and How you got into music?
I've played music since I can remember, my mum took me to my first baby's music group thing before I could walk. I was so young I don't even remember going! I've played every instrument under the sun and then I discovered an old guitar in my dad's garden shed in grade 8 and started teaching myself until my parents got me into lessons, and then eventually I studied Jazz Guitar at the Conservatorium and have been travelling around the world and playing music since.
I love it and music has been the main thing in my life since day dot.
The other big love of my life is horses and travel - so I have spent many years backpacking around the globe and working as a horseback trail guide, and performing and touring at the same time.
I didn't grow up in a horse family, but in suburbia in Logan (south of Brisbane). I decided when I was 23 to learn to ride, so I went to Tamworth to a working cattle and sheep property that also trains people in natural horsemanship and learnt to ride through the hills and farmlands using energy and body language to communicate with the horses there.
One day (hopefully soon!) I'll have a property of my own with a beautiful recording studio where I will be able to record artists music and work on their projects, as well as give people the life changing opportunity and experience to learn to communicate in the language of animals. A lot of people seem to think that communicating with horses is an esoteric, magical thing that few people could ever experience or understand, but it's actually not the case.
Big fan of your music, really love Running with the wolves. What is that song about?
Firstly, thanks very much for checking it out!
That song is actually about being kicked out of a Jewish synagogue after the head rabbi told me he was going to leave his wife cause he wanted to be with me!
I told the other leadership of the synagogue and instead of him getting kicked out, I did.
Ridiculous really, but it's basically about not being able to trust people who you thought were safe.
I don't really feel like that song reflects me and my vibe much these days though, it's funny that you picked that one in particular out! haha
When you record, how does the process go?
When I record I work in my own studio (Liondance Records) which is currently a mobile recording, mixing and mastering studio inside a bus.
I do the whole process myself these days (my first tracks I released were partly done by other local mix engineers) and so the whole thing is very chilled and I fit in recording, mixing and mastering my own stuff around the other work I have for clients who come through the studio.
I am currently working on my next 6 singles, and for each of these tracks I record a scratch vox/guitar track, then add in a fair bit of the production, then go back and record the final vocals and guitar parts, then mix and master.
Was is your career highlight?
My big career highlight was probably performing at the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast a few years back.
I've also played at the Qld Music Awards with Katie Noonan and a bunch of other amazing musicians, that was cool too.
These days I'm really enjoying starting to get approached for collaboration projects with amazing artists around the world and I'm stoked to be releasing a bunch of new music and getting back into touring soon.
I've got a gig coming up with the amazing Tessa Devine at The Bearded Lady in Brisbane on the 31st of August.
What do you think of the Adelaide/australian music scene?
The Australian music scene has always been a tricky one as "covers gigs" are such a huge part of the live music scene here.
I've also found it interesting how much the scene in Aus is kinda ruled by one radio station (Triple J), rather than the college radio scene that is so big in the states, which enables a wider variety of music and artists to be played and shared.
I have loved the scene in particular cities around Australia though - Cairns has a great little community up there, and Adelaide has a great collection of venues that support original music and so does West End in Brissie.
I find the Gold Coast to be a little behind on the original music space compared to many other cities, but it's getting there as the scene round here slowly grows.
What are\were some of your favourite venues to play?
My favourite sound wise around here is Eleven Dive Bar on the Sunshine Coast, but I also love little places like the Bearded Lady in West End cause the community and culture around that venue and that area is so awesome.
I've played bigger venues than those, but to me the vibe is super important and they're probably my favourite still for that reason.
Who are some other Australian bands/musicians we should have a look at?
Tessa Devine, Tullara, Karl S Williams 😄
What are your long and short term goals?
Short term goals:
Finish my next six singles and then start on the next 6!
Long term goals:
Sell out a world tour, find the perfect property to put Liondance Records and continue to grow my career as a producer/mixing/mastering engineer
Continue to put out fully sick music into the world and hopefully it makes it a happier place!
If you were stuck on an island with only one album, what album would that be?
Probably Stadium Arcadium by Red Hot Chili Peppers, that's been a favourite for many years, or Graceland by Paul Simon cause it reminds me of my time living, working and travelling in Africa 🙂
Finally, we can people find you? Socials etc?

Let Hannah Sands sweep you into her starry-eyed new single 'La La Land'
With her eloquent neo-soul finesse woven through powerful alt-R&B influences, Brisbane songstress Hannah Sands is returning with her fifth single of the year ‘La La Land’.
The dream-chasing ‘La La Land’, drifts untethered through limitless lo-fi grooves and romantic jazz-inspired freedoms. In a romantic mist of feathery vocals, nostalgic crackling production and a seductive bassline, the song floats outside of reality, drifting with an infectious optimism as Sands’ silky tones carry us effortlessly into a starry-eyed world of hopes, dreams and boundless possibilities.
Flexing her lyrical storytelling prowess once again, Hannah Sands paints a vivid picture within this track, written about chasing dreams and sharing your hopes with the people you love, as she explains: “'La La Land' is a song about an artist's journey pursuing their dreams. Often it's not only about the artist, but the team behind them. The partner, the families, the support network. The track is about an artist telling her partner of all the amazing places they are headed for in the future, where hard work pays off and dreams come true.”

Hazel Mei - The Funniest Thing (Indie Pop)
Tumblr media

HERE HEAR :: AUSTRA-SOUL TIANA KHASI :: MEGHALAYA :: It seems there is something in the water... That surrounds and runs through the sunshine state of Australia, including Brisbane, the home base of the loverly miss Tiana Khasi (say: Kah-see). The Brisbane-based artist is another product of the current thriving jazz/soul incubator in Australia, delivering a sound that is unique to her eclectic lineage, a colourful heritage threading back to the hills of India and the sands of Samoa, Tiana Khasi (say: Kah-see) is carefully carving her name – and voice – across the national stage. Soul singer, jazz musician, songwriter, performer - pick any of these and you’re only just scratching the surface. :: As a trained Jazz vocalist and member of the 7-piece Jazz-Hop band, Astro Travellers, Tiana is no stranger to variation, improvisation and/or collaboration... in the instance of her debut EP "MEGHALAYA" [7 songs. One song short of an LP? Is that still considered a Maxi-Single?] the 'collaborator' is Maestre DJ/Producer, Sampology whose sample based and beat-science rich, tracks form a perfectly organic feeling earth-bed for Tiana Khasi's heartfelt, soulful lyrics and vocal song-slinging. :: Another of the Alternative Soul-Jazz jinxes seemingly in abundance in the antipodes.  :: Welcome aboard, little sister. We're rooting for you out here! :: @TianaKhasi @Sampology @SoulHasNoTempo #Jazz #NotJazz #JazzNotJazz #JazzVox #JazzInBrisbane #JazzInAustralia #AustralianJazz #SoulJazzFusion #ModernJazz #PostModernJazz #JazzAtLeftOfCenter (at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwdezG0jTkD/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=19vdmxevalyq6

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - #15
Tumblr media
Keelan Mak - Warm Blooded
Brisbane singer, songwriter, and producer Keelan Mak is channelling everything perfect about art pop on ‘Warm Blooded’. Uncanny brooding vocals are sultry smooth, and synths pulsate so impactfully you can feel them flowing through your bloodstream. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and a true piece of art.
HeyRocco - Destroyer
American trio HeyRocco transport you back to golden age of 90s alternative, with a hint of modern-day indie psychedelia. Vocals drawl on top of metallic, repetitive guitars, sending you into a trance. This is a classic moody, but slightly chirpier than the usual, grunge jam.
MAYVE - Head High
Long Island trio MAYVE are all about the groove on ‘Head High’. Subdued vocals add depth to wonky, 80s style synths, which whirr like a machine with a mind of its own. The hook at the chorus gleams, and there are only good vibes  allowed.
Joe Robinson - Anything But Love You
Joe Robinson is an Australian musician living in Nashville, and has played over two thousand concerts in thirty countries. This impressive accomplishment resonates on the songwriting on ‘Anything But Love You’. It’s singer-songwriter perfection, but with an edge, soul, and pop genius reminiscent of Savage Garden. Watery tones and latin jazz stylings keep your interest and your heart yearning.
The Nightmares - Watching Thunderstorms
Kent grunge punk trio The Nightmares have birthed their first chaotic child into the world with ‘Watching Thunderstorm’. The tempo is nuclear from the get go, guitars thrash around and drums persist. The vocal on this track is particularly interesting, they evoke a feeling of American folk punk and emo, which classify The Nightmares as multi-dimensional and completely their own.

Today 2 years ago, the Savage Garden compilation album "The Singles" was released in Australia to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the formation of the band :D I want 2 share the incredible album’s 'prologue' written by journalist Cameron Adams <3<3
AUSTRALIANS have always had a strange relationship with pop music.
On the one hand we're the country that first embraced ABBA - at one point one in three homes own the Swede's greatest hits.
On the other we're quicker to hail pub rock icons from AC/DC to Cold Chisel as 'serious music'.
The irony is our biggest musical exports have been unashamed pop bands: Kylie Minogue, pop's great survivor with Olivia Newton-John opening doors for her before that, Air Supply and Little River Band showing America they didn't have the monopoly on making iconic ballads.
In the `90s, in suburban Brisbane, two men would become Australia's most successful duo of all time.
It started the way many bands before them had - musician Daniel Jones placing an advertisement looking for a singer in covers band Red Edge.
The only application was Darren Hayes, a man who knew his way around a classic hit, raised on a healthy diet of Madonna and Michael Jackson.
No one knew they'd go on to write their own classic hits.
That journey started 20 years ago in 1995, when they'd outgrown other peoples' songs and found themselves in the studio recording their own.
There was a name change, from Crush (a title Darren Hayes would later recycle) to Savage Garden, from The Vampire Lestat.
First single I Want You was released in Australia in 1995, a year dominated by the angst of Alanis Morissette and not one but two versions of the Macarena.
Against the odds it soared to No.4 in Australia, with Hayes' rapid-fire vocal delivery and that immense chorus seducing radio.
Hayes and Jones had spent years preparing for this moment and weren't going to be one hit wonders. To the Moon and Back (still many peoples' favorite Savage Garden song) displayed their prematurely mature approach to panoramic pop and Hayes as a lyrical surgeon penetrating the heart.
The pair were profilic in writing instantly familiar pop tunes, and who knew one of Australia's most special and most successful voices of all time would come from a dude from Brisbane with an ET fixation.
Hayes and Jones had what would become a not so secret weapon in waiting - Truly Madly Deeply. In becoming one of the most successful songs ever written by Australian musicians it transformed into 'our song' for lovers everywhere.
The beauty of the first Savage Garden album was how naive it all was. Songs written in suburban bedrooms became global anthems; the intimacy and innocence of their tunes was immediately genuine and untouched by corporate fingerprints. It was home-made world class music.
Australia conquered (their self titled album sold over 850,000 copies and sits aside their heroes Madonna, Queen, ABBA, Crowded House and Michael Jackson in the Top 20 selling albums in Australia) Savage Garden then dominated the world, song by song.
Ironically it was following those hits around the world that would divide the duo. Hayes was born to be on stage, Jones born to remain behind the scenes. What made it work initially ultimately tore it apart.
The show went on for second album Affirmation, arguably their finest work, especially as it was made with a skyscraper-weight of expectation knowing that, unlike their debut, the world was listening. And impatient. That flawless run of singles - The Animal Song, I Knew I Loved You, Affirmation, Hold Me, The Best Thing - is a snapshot a pop band in their imperial period. Everything was going right – the album also contained ballads I Don't Know You Anymore and Two Beds and a Coffee Machinewhich mined a darkly emotional streak the likes of Adele would later re-introduce to the mainstream.
Touring Affirmation fatally wounded Savage Garden with Jones retreating to the shadows as Hayes went solo. Both men have admirably politely declined increasingly lucrative reformation offers, letting the songs continue to ably represent them instead.
In hindsight, they've left a short but perfectly formed legacy. They followed up the debut nobody thought they could better, they sold millions right at the tail end of the period where people still paid for music they loved, they shared their highly personal songs with audiences on stages around the world.
And if you want stats, they sold over 20 million albums in under three years and join the Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John, Helen Reddy and Men at Work as the only Australians to score two American No.1 singles. Those chart toppers, Truly Madly Deeply and I Knew I Loved You are still American radio staples.
They never had a dud album, never had a major flop single, never had an awkward jazz odyssey moment, never forgot what or who they were doing this for. Thousands of bands claim they'd stop when it ceases being fun, Savage Garden actually did it. And as modest masters of pop, in just two albums they provided enough classic, timeless songs to fill a Greatest Hits album. And if you're going to be a pop band, being wildly, globally, permanently popular is the whole point.
