Concepts like this are not discrete points, they’re clusters - collections of a bunch of traits that seem to reappear as a pattern. We can make a giant list of thousands of things that describe ‘cat’ - furry, four legs, meows, temperamental - and it gives us a lot of leeway for changing a few traits and still getting cat. You can have a shaved cat, a three legged cat, a mute cat, a cuddly cat, but it’s still cat because the rest of the thousand list items is the same. Asking “which of the list of a thousand items makes a cat truly a cat?” is nonsensical. Some are more unique to cat-cluster-lists than other lists, but no single entry is the truth.
Identifies as woman is not the core of being woman in our collective conceptspace, it’s one descriptor out of many for being a woman, because womanness is not fully described by identification.
..
This is why I think the narrative “you are a woman if you identify as one” is cruel. It tells people that the power over their gender is entirely in their hands; it places the responsibility of womanhood on them, if they only believe it fully enough, and then expects them to survive in a world where gender is actually a list of clustered traits we spent millions of years evolving around. If they falter, “I’m not woman enough” then becomes a thought with enough power to make them not woman enough.
Trans people often talk about how their existence is threatened, and in a sense this is actually the case. If womanness exists in mind only, then it is actually existentially threatened by stuff like tweets or blog posts. I think this is at least to some degree an explanation for why some segments of trans people seem to be so aggressive.
My point is, treating womanhood entirely as an internal identity is psychologically fucked up and places trans people in a shitty position where they are forced to associate only with social realities that validate their identity, silence anyone who disagrees, or else risk being wiped out entirely. This seems like an unsustainable approach to womanhood.
...
In general, I advocate for treating trans people as their preferred gender, regardless of how much they overlap with their desired gender cluster, because it seems like a kind thing to do. For example, misgendering is often very painful, and it usually takes little effort to use the correct pronouns.
If your grandmother with severe dementia keeps thinking you’re her long-dead brother, you’d probably have no problem playing along with it. I’m not saying trans people are demented, or that you’re being patronizing to them, I’m just trying to point out that we already have norms installed where we sometimes go along with narratives we don’t believe because we are kind, and if you tell me you won’t use someone’s preferred pronouns because of your unfailing commitment to the truth then I am doubtful.
..
It also seems reasonable to treat trans people differently when they actually meaningfully do not share traits with cis women. Different medical treatment seems like a clear example. Sexual preferences too - lots of people have genitals really enmeshed with what turns them on, and it’s okay to not want to date trans women - or to want to date exclusively trans women! Sports are divided by biological sex for mostly good reasons, for now. And if you want to start a women’s discussion group to talk about being sexually harassed by men from an early age, it makes sense to request this be limited to women who were sexually harassed by men from an early age.
It also seems reasonable to hold the same wariness towards at least some trans women that exist towards men; if you don’t want to allow men into your bedroom alone with you because you’ve had experience with men being sexually pushy, it isn’t insane to not want a poorly-passing trans lesbian to stay out of your bedroom, because you’re processing her as having traits that overlap more with the male cluster than the female one.
But most circumstances seem to hold no meaningful difference, and I suspect lots of people overly focus on the above examples as excuses to justify an unexamined disgust reflex.

someone please get ziz a new ontology, like, this is a philosophical approach to ordering things and talking about what is and isn't; categories are objective but which ones you magnify to importance are not

Is math discovered or invented?
Okay so here's my take: inventions are discovered. Assuming inventions are invented, then they're both invented and discovered, in the same way as math.
Elaboration! When we say something was discovered, what do we mean? I think we mean that it was already there, and someone just had to find it, it wasn't created "from scratch". Well, why might we think math was already there, rather than created from scratch? To me the obvious reasoning is thst math was already there because if you have two totally disconnected societies they're going to discover the same math (or at least,Some of the same math), ergo there must be something already there that they both find, rather than something they create.
But the same is true of inventions! Given the same materials provided, and needs that must be met, I fee certain that societies allowed to evolve separately would invent (some of) the same things! Which is exactly what we should expect! Developing the steam engine isn't like writing a book, a fundamentally arbitrary exercise, it lies implicit in math and physics, and we just happen upon it while searching conceptspace!
(Perhaps you might make a Borges library argument for books being discovered. But that would be stupid)

I keep hearing people proposing ideas that sound, roughly, like "back in the 19th century people were revolutionising scientific fields every other week working alone or with a handful of assistants, now we don't do that even with huge teams of scientists working together, therefore we need to [read the classics/bring back the aristocracy/whatever other thing 19th century scientists did we don't do any more]"
and y'know i'm not gonna declare that 21st century scientific practice has no problems. but it seems to me that if there's One Weird Trick (or N weird tricks) that let you become the modern-day equivalent of Darwin or Maxwell or Laplace then surely someone out there would be doing that? even if the entire scientific apparatus is broken there's people outside it who are curious about things and free to do whatever they want; some of them are already rich and don't need to work for a living and so have all the free time required. Why aren't those people unifying quantum mechanics and general relativity?
I know what my answer is: because unifying quantum mechanics and general relativity is hard, and for the most part all the things that are easy to discover already have been and we're left with the stuff that requires a dozen people working together, or a budget to build a giant particle accelerator, or a huge scientific community exploring conceptspace in parallel.
You can say "yeah, it doesn't work if you're outside the scientific establishment entirely, you need access to some institutional resources, but the people who do have those resources could do a lot better" but at that point it kind of seems like you're admitting that doing science did get harder since the 19th century, not because people are doing it wrong but because we're answering different questions, and if so then the appeal of "well it worked back then" vanishes and you have to argue for your proposal on merits other than its 19th century track record.
(alternatively you can declare that they have gotten amazing results and our scientific process is so broken that not only are we unable to discover things but also if someone had a unified theory of everything and published it without institutional affiliation nobody would acknowledge it even to plagiarise it. i am sceptical but you can)

STE(A)M??
I am confused about STEM and STEAM as acronyms. The letters stand for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math—that part is straightforward.
But STEM seems like a really useful mental bucket to describe a particular cluster of interest or training...
...and STEAM seems sort of like saying "We're a combination pizza hut and taco bell and laundromat". It's not a natural cluster.
Looking into this briefly (I googled `stem vs steam`) it seems that the issue falls out of confusions related to descriptivism vs prescriptivism. A bunch of prescriptivists saw the STEM concept (and probably saw people saying good things about it) and said "What? What about Art?" They were making a genuinely good point—a well-rounded education can help people think better.
But they decided to make that point by muddying conceptspace. Why?
Ahh, further investigation yields that the STEM term came from the context of educational and curricular policy, and may have had the effect of arts getting dramatically deprioritized because it didn't seem competitive.
Another piece is that a bunch of people seem to be emphasizing Design, and doing almost a weird motte & bailey thing with Art/Design being the A.
Despite having more context now, I still smell unclear thinking around this.
(Also posted to facebook 15 minutes ago, where people are having interesting discussions about it already!)

If a tree falls in a forest...
It's that time of the semester again when I have to rationalise why I have to stay in physics.
The undergraduate physics curriculum of University X is frustratingly...banal. Here's a rough outline:
Classical Mechanics (Newtonian, the T - V kind, the T + V kind)
Electromagnetism (using Victorian-era vector calculus)
Quantum Mechanics (done to make you feel like it was written by a tight-knit circle of friends who all happened to meet each other at just the right moments in history)
Statistical Mechanics (using numbers and a curious doggedness for infinitesimals of various "exactness")
Experimental Methods (*shrug*)
And a bunch of in-betweens that are neither important to the story or are only used by People Who Actually Want To Do Something Useful.
Why wade through a sea of arrows when Geometric Algebra exists? Why introduce quantum mechanics as Hilbert space gymnastics when a perfectly acceptable complex-valued probability-theoretic approach is available? Why do we not get to pick which kind of formal system we can use according to our own sense of elegance and aesthetics?
'Cause the world's not made for us, is why.
I have developed a sort of 'learned helplessness' in solving problems. Somewhere along the way, I began the habit of sweating beads when confronted with a physics problem, such as:
A rigidbody of moment I_z spins freely on the XY plane. If \theta is the angle between the rotator's axis and the x-axis, provide a quantum mechanical description of the system via Schrödinger's equation and solve for the allowed energies.
Here, my eyes begin to glaze over somewhere around 'rotator' and 'quantum'. I think of having to go Skitter-mode1 on all my plans about bringing the people of Organisation X closer. I think of the meeting I have to attend in 9 hours and the fact that I have yet to try getting some sleep. I think of the e-mail I sent to my adviser, asking for another opportunity to give excuses on why I have been ditching our thesis meetings.
How can one survive in this machismo-infused problem-solving culture whose people denigrate the kind of mental processes you dared to be born with? The physics department of University X is filled with half-serious asshats who think comprehending massive chunks of text, noticing semantic patterns in conceptspace, and being quick on the draw in pointing out logical implications and inconsistencies are trivial uses of one's brain and are best left to people who will flip their burgers in due course. And of course, don't forget the guile to insist that understanding == being able to solve exercises.
This is an instance where more knowledge makes you feel more helpless. You understand why people are acting the way they do, but you have very little in the way of rapport or political influence to change anything. Heck, the set up is optimal for their kind of brains2. You have to fight that incentive to even begin to tackle the problem. And well, it's not hard to see that physics needs people heavily skewed towards pattern recognition. A physics problem is fundamentally a deduction problem. You are given elements of a physical system: a force, an energy level, a distribution, and you are tasked to derive other elements of the system by using well-known (or well-things-you-should-know-already-when-you-take-the-exam) laws and intermediate laws.
But I'm a Verbal. I elaborate and explain3 each step when I solve a problem. I detest accepting things as true until a pattern emerges. I look between data points, not AT the data points. Surely there's a place too for folks like me, right? Perhaps in building theories (which you don't do much as an undergrad) or exposing holes in arguments (which is less useful during undergrad) or thinking up new, more efficient ways of saying the same things (which is only useful in undergrad research, which you can't do when you have to take two replacement exams to save your GPA). FUCK.
So here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to get myself one of these:
and make myself a code of rules. Adding creatively (like adding 0 to both sides of an equation to force a particular form on one side) counts as a rule. Using Gauss' Law given a symmetric charge distribution counts as a rule. Every single time I solve a problem, I have to have this notebook and a timer in hand. Any formal step I make must be referenced from this notebook and this notebook alone. Why?
It will help kill the 'conversational' style of problem-solving I do, supplanting it with a "let's see what tools apply to the previous step or given" attitude.
It will curb all my cravings for 'solid mathematical foundations' every time I get distracted while solving.
And to encourage me to solve my problem sets, I shall post about them here. Deal, myself?
Deal.
The ever-competent protagonist of Wildbow's Worm, which you should definitely check out if you haven't. I'm just beyond halfway done. ↩︎
