Delaware River (2) (3) (4) by Holly Kilpatrick
Via Flickr:
(1) Near the Durham Furnace Locks on the canal. (2) Portland Pedestrian Bridge. In the 1800s and early 1900s, this was a wooden covered bridge. Damaged in floods, it was closed to vehicles and reconstructed as a walking bridge in 1958. On the closest pier you can see numbers marking what appear to be flood height markers, but the numbers can't be in feet because the bridge is probably about 50 feet high. (3) Looking north to the Delaware Water Gap in the distance. On the left bank is Pennsylvania, on the right bank is New Jersey. I am standing on the walking bridge between the two. (4) At Portland, PA, looking south to the Portland -Columbia bridge in the evening.

A Lesson in Bio-Remediation
Tumblr media
The Lehigh Gap aka the Palmerton Zinc Pile superfund site is a lesson in the importance of continuous management in remediation of toxic lands. The Lehigh Gap was once referred to as a desolate moonscape due to its downwind position from a local Zinc Smelter. From 1889 - 1980 this smelter pumped heavy metals into the air which, due to prevailing winds, landed primarily on this particular mountainside in the Kittatinny Range. Zinc, Cadmium, Lead, sulfuric acid rain turned this area into a hellscape so barren that all the vegetation died. Additionally all 3 feet of top soils washed away; fungi couldn't even survive to decompose dead tree snags whose bark was filled with heavy metals. Due to using an outdated technique, the factory shut down and afterwards the EPA declared the entire region a superfund site in 1983. For the mountainside itself the EPA wanted to incorporate 3 strategies of remediation: Prevent Erosion, Plant only native species to provide habitat for local fauna, and keep the metals under new soils. Originally an ambitious firm followed this strategy by terracing the hillside with roads, they dumped sewage and seeds then left it to grow without management. Quickly the site was flooded with invasive species which no animals could use as habitat and quickly died back down again from acidity.
Tumblr media
Gap Circa 2002. The Lehigh Gap Nature Conservancy was formed. The nonprofit bought 700 acres with the intent to remediate the region. A local biology professor involved suggested incorporating lime to neutralize the heavy acidity from the acid rain (the grounds had a Ph 4.2). The area was divided into sections, each location were tested with a slightly different strategies for successful re-establishment of plant communities. [Image below: sign of plant species and mixtures used in specific plots]
Tumblr media
The primary methodology was to reestablish plant life and contain the heavy metals using warm season perennial grasses, which would not draw heavy metals up to the top soil and create a layer of humus around the surface toxic metals. They wanted to mirror the plantings of a similar rocky ecosystems: The Serpentine Barrens in Pennsylvania. To keep the metals contained below the new loam the site must be kept in a prairie stage of habitat succession, secondary stages like early birch-aspen forests would draw heavy metals up through its leaves and recontaiminate the topsoil. An indigenous Lenape strategy was utilized keep the prairie at a constant state the same strategy once used to maintain blueberry-huckleberry shrub food forests a couple hundred feet above in the Kittatinny Range.
The result of constant management, occasional burns, public access, native only plantings, and removal of invasives? Success and reduced harm status.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we see grasses and flowers provide habitat for hundreds of species, including endanged birds, as well as rare plants such as wild bleeding heart and sandwort
Tumblr media
How do we know this was successful and not just natural succession? Unfortunately certain private property owners had their lands containminated as well, some have elected to not allow EPA revitalization due to scape-goating and reactionary politics.
Tumblr media
In choosing to leave soils containminated (red barren slopes) the owner of this hill allows heavy metals to flow into the neighborhoods and water ways of the local town as well as eventually the Delaware River. Truly this is despicable behavior as this impacts the health of the entire community.
Tumblr media
On a positive note this project shows that even some of the worst sites have potential for remediation. Please consider visiting, donating, learning about, or enjoying the Lehigh Gap area as the national park commission is in the process of expanding a trail along the Lehigh River all the way to the Delaware River. Management of this site will continue hopefully until enough soil is established to support secondary stage succession trees (oak and hickory) and a habitat restored!

Inside, the Giant on Alabama Avenue in Ward 8 was abuzz with shoppers loading up on produce, diapers and snacks for the weekend. But outside, the mood was a bit more anxious, as shoppers wandered over to Trayon White Sr.’s pop-up resource fair to hear the Ward 8 D.C. Council memberdeliver what sounded like a dire plea to save the store.
“This is a message to our community that we stand in solidarity about keeping this grocery option open,” White said to a throng of news cameras.
He had just had a meeting with Giant’s regional leadership, and had come away feeling a need to sound the alarm. The Giant on Alabama Avenueisthe only major grocery store in the entire ward, serving more than 85,000 people, and White had the sense its future could be at risk. The management reported an uptick in shoplifting and crime at the Ward 8 location. The managers had, according to White, spent hundreds of thousands on security upgrades and yet, White said, were losing hundreds of thousands of dollars per month because of theft. They didn’t say they were planning on closing the store. But still, White was worried, and now so were some of the residents who relied on it.
“If we don’t have this one, there will be nowhere else,” said Traci Pratt, a 58-year-old Ward 8 resident who has been shopping at the Giant ever since it opened in 2007.
The anxiety surrounding a single grocery store in Ward 8 underscores the limited access to quality food east of theAnacostia River, leaving officials like White to cling tightly to the community’s only available option when its future appears rocky. “This is more than just a food store — it’s a central part of our community hub,” White said.
It’s not entirely clear just how rocky things are for Giant. The store declined to provide financial information to The Washington Post about the impact of shoplifting, but in a statement, made an assurance that it does not have any “current plans” to shut down.
“However, we need to be able to run our stores safely and profitably,”read the statement, sent by spokesperson Felis Andrade. “The reality is that theft and violence at this store is significant, and getting worse, not better. As a result, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to operate under these conditions.”
The Giant filled an enormous gap in Ward 8 when it opened its doors in 2007. The grand opening drew a visit from the mayor, gaggles of reporters, balloons, elated shoppers and even serenades from violinists. At the time, it had been about a decade since the ward had its own full-service grocery store, and so the thought of losing it again — to those who have watched this space evolve from a field of weeds to a crowded retail center — is enough to cause some hand-wringing.
On Friday, the parking lotwas full, the checkout lineswere packed and, for safety, therewas a mobile police camera hovering in the parking lot and a security guard standing by the door.
Giant’s leadership began going public with broad concerns about theft and crime in news reports earlier this year. It wasn’t just about the Ward 8 location, and it wasn’t just Giant. Retailers across the country have been exiting large urban centers, citing problems with increased organized retail crime as well as lower foot traffic and inflation-related issues.
Grocery stores run on slim profit margins, so higher costs for operations, labor and rent have put even more pressure on companies. Giant Food, which has 165 supermarkets across D.C., Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, has not closed any stores yet, and has made certain efforts to avoid doing so, company president Ira Kress told The Post in May. With theft and crime being one of the more prevalent issues, Giant limited the number of entrances at itsstores to create more obstacles for shoplifters — a tactic that drew objections from the city’s fire inspector. Stores are also locking away more merchandise; skimming shelves of high-value, frequently stolen items; limiting self-checkout to 20 items; and installing wall dispensers that make noise when items are removed.
As retailers leave some cities, one grocery chain is trying to stay
“We have invested in a host of measures to mitigate the issue at this store, and across many stores, but we also need the help and partnership from the community and local officials to truly combat the theft and violence that continues to escalate,” the Giant spokesperson said in the statement Friday.
White noted Giant’s regional management planned to sit down with the city’s economic development department in the mayor’s office possibly as soon as next week, something a spokesman for the department, Ben Fritsch, said is part of ongoing talks about how the city can assist with keeping the store safe and thriving.
White stressed to any residents who mayhave been listening that they should turn to nonprofit partners that provide help with food security issues if they can’t afford groceries, rather than resort to theft.
For some reason I find this to be hilarious.

I used to feel like I had no sense of home but I’m starting to think my home is so vast that I just had to grow into it. Home is everywhere I’ve ever lived, from the Delaware Water Gap to Winston-Salem. Home is my “concert radius”, a funky trapezoid stretching from asbury park to Pittsburgh down and across North Carolina. Home is the Appalachian mountains where I’ve lived for nearly a decade, the Philly suburb where I spent most of my childhood, and everywhere in between. Home is the New River, but also the Delaware River and the Roanoke River and every creek I’ve traversed in between. I am simply too full of life to inhabit prescribed geographic borders.
