Alot of people make the horror for themselves, it's kinda cute. Like being scared to play Resident Evil (any of them) or Bioshock.
Ya really do just have to make the horror of the unknown for yourselves. Trust me, none of these games are scary, they're just action comedies pretending to be serious. They have themes of horror, but they will never explore them.

supergiant games are 3 for 3 [sorry bastion..... i haven't played u bastion.....] to me. transistor, pyre and hades BEEEELOOOOOVEEEDDDD
#bastion regularly gets knocked down to like.. a quid on the playstation store. i should pick it up and play it at sum point..#but yes.... cant believe they are making their first sequel.. treading into new territory.. CANT WAIT😃#idk what my favourite of the three is.... very different flavours#with the throughline ofc being incorporating gameplay mechanics directly into the story.. Delicious#and jen zees art and darren korbs OSTs and LOGAN CUNNINGHAMS VOIIIIIICE YIPPEEEE#i think realising he voiced both hades and achilles was the most surprising to me just because how close together they are in the house#like...those r different guys. and i looooove him as the transistor itself😵‍💫ooooooouuuuuuuuuuuaaaaaahhh#really love that the original pitch for transistor was ->#greg kasavin and jen zee shooting the shit in a long car journey coming back from e3#fantasy world. unassuming women working as a singer in taverns falls in love with a travelling wizard#group of people come for the wizard and kill him with powerful demonic blade. blade is lost in the struggle. she finds it#and miraculously hears the guys voice coming from inside the sword. wields it herself. goes out for revenge#and they enjoyed the idea but accepted it was never the sorta game they were gonna make. then transistor development starts hitting a wall#wonderin why they arent making the story the wanna make. and greg goes..because a demonic rune sword doesnt work in a scifi setting#jen designs red and the transistor. nails it in one. like the original concept art is just.. how they look in the final game#RIGHT TRANSISTOR DEVELOPMENT TANGENT OVER#i love the fleshy..marble design of The Process... eating up the city....#LOOOVE sunkrish balas performance as royce. that third act with headphones on. he gave me chills. his intonation is soooo perfect and eerie#luv the ps4 controller lighting up when the transistor talks hehehehe#this became ramble city. Pyre. PYRE!!!!!!!! fire off points about pyre. go go go:#the Cast Of Characters😃....AUUUGH. the downside as a setting.. hello boundless purgatory.. endless plains and roiling seas to travel across#how TIED the gameplay of the rites is to the story of pyre. its kinda crazy how well integrated it is#pyre is soo Lore heavy. and most of it is optional. no voice acting in this badboy#only played it once but i fucking loooved reading all the entries in the book of rites...#its just so DENSE. I LOVE U HIGH FANTASY BASKETBALL SHOOTING HOOPS INTO FLAMES TO ASCEND FROM PURGATORY GAME <- greatly simplifying#it has fucking interactive music that changes depending on what team u are fighting against in the liberation rites COME ONNNN MAAAAAN#everybody and their nan knows how fucking good hades is. im running outta ramble space in these tags#tightest controls. weapon and boon combinations up the wazoo. drool worthy gameplay loop. just one more run: the game. pet doggy#i looooooooooove supergiant games i looooooooooooooove supergiant games. IGN reports that Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft will all be skipping E3 2023.
Microsoft will reportedly be doing a summer showcase (with some PR speak about timing that translates to ‘probably right around when E3 traditionally is,’) per the article, but not having booth presence.
Microsoft is ON THE ESA BOARD, so if the report is accurate and they’re skipping it is DEAD dead.

May 2023 Sony State of Play
May 2023 Sony State of Play - Yesterday was a big Sony State of Play event and this morning I talk about some of the games that excited me.
Hey Folks! Yesterday was a big Sony State of Play event revealing a good number of games to be released largely in the remainder of this year. It has been a while since I have done a post where I talk about a game presentation so I thought I would do so this morning and cover my personal highlights. There are some big-name games that I am not going to spend much time on. For example, a remake of…

The 2006 E3 demo for Super Mario Galaxy contained a unique element of visual design that is absent from the finished game: upon starting, the game's logo appears in a loading circle which then seamlessly turns into Mario floating in a bubble. Upon bursting the bubble, Mario falls down to the level and gameplay begins.
It is unknown if this was merely something created specifically for the demo or whether it was planned to be implemented in the finished game, but scrapped later in development.

At what point in time did you see a giant hammer and go “yeah, that’s my main.”
Monster Hunter: World is a 2018 action role-playing game developed and published by Capcom. The fifth mainline installment in the Monster Hunter series, it was released worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2018, with a Windows version following in August 2018. In the game, the player takes the role of a Hunter, tasked to hunt down and either kill or trap monsters that roam in one of several environmental spaces. If successful, the player is rewarded through loot consisting of parts from the monster and other elements that are used to craft weapons and armor, amongst other equipment. The game's core loop has the player crafting appropriate gear to be able to hunt down more difficult monsters, which in turn provide parts that lead to more powerful gear. Players may hunt alone or in a group of up to four players via the game's online multiplayer.
Announced at E3 2017, Monster Hunter: World adopts the series' standard formulas from its older home console roots and recent handheld games to take advantage of the higher processing power provided by modern consoles and computers. Changes made in Monster Hunter: World include creating environmental spaces that are fully connected and removing the "zones" that were necessary for the PlayStation 2 and handheld games, more advanced monster artificial intelligence and physics, a more persistent cooperative multiplayer experience, and a refinement of the game's tutorials and user interface to help with bringing new players into the series. These changes led Capcom to plan for the game's simultaneous release worldwide, since Monster Hunter as a series has generally languished outside of Japan partially due to disparate release schedules. Capcom also opted to support online play between these different geographic regions for similar reasons. The delay for the Windows release was attributed to Capcom seeking to make sure its first foray into the Windows market was optimized for players on computers. By April 2020, updates to the game were synchronized among all platforms.
Monster Hunter: World received critical acclaim upon release, with critics praising how Capcom was able to make the game more accessible to new players and to Western markets, without detracting from the series' core gameplay elements and enjoyable difficulty, and fully taking advantage of the computational capacity of modern consoles to create living ecosystems, with some even calling it the best in the franchise. Monster Hunter: World is the single highest-selling game in Capcom's history, with over 21 million copies shipped by July 2022. A DLC expansion pack, subtitled Iceborne, was released for home consoles in September 2019 and for Windows in January 2020, and reached 10 million sales by December 2022. The next mainline installment, Monster Hunter Rise, was co-developed alongside World and announced for a worldwide release on Nintendo Switch in March 2021, with a Windows version released the following year.

Obscure Far Cry Promos and Content
I'm a big far cry fan, which means I have to make my own food in this economy. But sometimes I just want some ACTUAL canon or canon-ish or even just canon-adjacent content, y'know? It has gotten to the point I go into youtube rabbit holes or watch a remarkably below average hallmark movies for 5 minutes of an actor's screentime to hopefully hear Jason or Ajay or whoever talk. And so in these quests, I've found a couple obscure promos. Gonna compile them here for myself mostly :)
Far Cry 3
Far Cry 3 - The Voices of Insanity: Doctor Earnhardt //a live action video with Alec Earnhardt's VA
Far Cry 3 - The Voices of Insanity: Vaas //same thing but with Michael Mando
Hoyt Audition Far Cry 3 //the last part of "The Voices of Insanity" videos, couldn't find the one from Ubisoft's own account but someone else had posted it on youtube
Far Cry 3 for PS3: TV Spot
Far Cry 3 -- Island Survival Guide: Psychopaths, Drugs & Other Dangers // video narrated by Willis Huntley
Far Cry 3 -- The Savages: Vaas & Buck // this video shows a rare render of vaas with tataus on his arm!
Far Cry 3 | The Tribe: Citra & Dennis //this video has a deleted scene where Jason hallucinates the tatau snaking up his arm
Far Cry 3 -- The Tyrant: Hoyt
Far Cry 3 - Insane Edition // this is a promo done for a special edition for the game, Michael Mando probably couldn't shoot the promo himself and just voice acted, and so they used another actor and made it so the camera never sees Vaas's face.
^ There is also a survival guide titled Face Your Insanity written by post-Rook events Jason Brody as part of the Insane Edition.
Far Cry 3 | E3 2012 Step Into Insanity Trailer [NORTH AMERICA] // this has a few close-ups of Jason and Vaas switching places with each other
Far Cry 3 Interviews (via @lulu2992)
Far Cry 3 Tweets by Jeffrey Yohalem, the lead writer. (also compiled by @/lulu2992! Thanks again!)
Far Cry 4
Divya Kandala's Blog (archived on the Wayback Machine) // Divya Kandala is a fictional journalist who wrote a blog about her travels to Kyrat, her blog's basically world-building promo for FC4. You could also find the house she stayed at in Kyrat!
Far Cry 4 TV Commercial
Far Cry 4 | Kyrat Tuk Tuk Stories //this is the MOST we see ajay in third person in promo content
Far Cry 4 - CGI Trailer // this isn't exactly RARE but it took forever for me to find that clip of ajay's eyes reflecting from the kukri. plus he looks EXTREMELY caucasian which really doesn't help the rumors I've heard that they originally wanted Jason again as FC4's protag
Comedy Central Far Cry 4 Commercial feat Danny Pudi & Donald Glover
Far Cry 4 and Childish Gambino: The Collaboration | PS4, PS3 // a music video for Crawl by Childish Gambino done as a collab
Old Archive.Org link to the Far Cry 4 webpage that had a choose your own adventure campaign
^ and the youtube video to promote it
Far Cry 4 | Behind the Scene Trailer 1/3 [Europe] // developer vlogs when they visited Nepal and interviewed the ghurka that became base for Golden Path, you can see the village that resembles Banapur a lot!
Far Cry 4 Performance Capture Interview // you can see Janina Gavankar, Amita's actress doing some mocap in this
Janina Gavankar Talks Far Cry 4 - ^ and the interview with her after
World Gameplay Premiere - Walkthrough E3 2014 - Far Cry 4 // this was to showcase gameplay but they eventually took out this entire mission where you have to wingsuit to Ratu Gadhi (Yuma's fortress), which is a shame because it looked very nice.
Far Cry 5
i'll be honest, im not a fc5 girlie, so i dont usually do a lot of digging, and im pretty sure these are actually not obscure at all. but these are trailers i found that really blew it out of the park. the marketing team for 5 really went HAM
Far Cry 5: Teaser Trailer | Ubisoft //this has a peggie banging someone's head to a church bell rhythmically with the gorgeous view of Montana mountains as backdrop and i for one, find it hilarious
Far Cry 5 | The Sermon - Live Action Trailer
Far Cry 5 | The Baptism - Live Action Trailer //somebody once mentioned this one has Joseph looking like Trevor GTA and i have never quite known peace ever since. it really also shows the reality of how Joseph is actually just really Unwell, and lore that Joseph killed Pastor Jerome's daughter that never showed up in-game.
Far Cry 5: Anything Can Happen, Everything Will - Live Action TV Spot | Trailer // mixes live action and game CGI renders, pretty cool actually!
The Making of Far Cry 5 | Behind the Scenes of Ubisoft [Documentary]
Far Cry 6 Comics
not gonna put in FC6 stuff because they're actually very easy to find! lots of trailers and mocaps and interviews on youtube :) Far Cry 6 actually has a more obscure lore in their comics
Far Cry: Esperanza's Tears comic // this is a Juan-centric prequel comic that features a completely new country, lore about Far Cry universe's political landscape, and lots of cameos from 3-6's characters! very interesting read especially if you're a sucker for backstories like me
Far Cry: Rite of Passage comic // this is more popular as it features Anton telling Diego the backstories for 3-5's villains.
There is also a book titled The Official Far Cry Survival Guide written by a fictional character called Hunter Nash, who supposedly grew up with Hope County-level of a doomsday prepper dad and winds up as a journalist who travels to the locations of 3-6 and wrote how to survive each location accordingly. It's adorned with official artwork of the games and plenty of survival tips. Not much lore-wise, but cool nonetheless! it also fuels my co-workers au ideas but that's personal.
i have actually found stuff like a really old MTV show called Undressed with Gianpaolo Venuta where he uses his Jason voice for his character, and how Patrick Kwok-Choon, the new voice actor for Ajay does voice acting in Thomas the Train Engine and Paw Patrol, and an indie movie with Greg Bryk where he wears fun sunglasses like Joseph, but that's neither here nor there to the franchise, so eh. // i'll edit this post if i find more, so maybe check back sometimes!

I'm grumpy about Silent Hill again...
TW for discussions of suicide, self harm, abuse (both parent to child and amongst peers) and general spookiness. Y'know... the usual Silent Hill rigmarole of trauma and despair. Also be warned that I'm going to spoil a lot of the Silent Hill series, in particular Silent Hill 2 and the Short Message game that just came out. ***
So... one of my most popular posts out there is this one. It's about Pyramid head and the loss of subtlety in media. And I couldn't help but feel like we hadn't moved an inch from when I posted that back in... *checks date on post* hrrk. my bones... 2017. I'm going to die soon. Anyway. Today I watched Second Wind do a run of the short, free-to-play Silent Hill: Short Message. I admittedly had a good bit of trepidation going in just because of the marketing. Which, for all of you marketing majors out there, that is called "Not a good sign." Marketing should make you want to play a game... especially if you're a fan of the series already. But this... it was a bit of a wet blanket, largely due to the fact that it spoiled a lot of the focus of the game. It basically said "this is a game about how bullying and being chronically online is real bad. We're gonna be spooky about it now." And... straining to push aside how incredibly reductive that is... why give it away? Why say it out loud? Why did you tell us what you are doing? Can you imagine Silent Hill 2 if we'd known it was about James killing his wife from the jump? We didn't. We hadn't the first clue. We knew nothing other than that he was looking for her and she was maybe dead? But we didn't know how... possibly lung cancer or TB given that she had the most pointed coughing sequence since the movie Tombstone. And hey... the last game had someone looking for a loved one too. Maybe that's the deal with Silent Hill. Who knows? No one did at that point. It was still a big old mystery for the most part. And then the E3 trailer... like there's the weird pretty lady in jail? But what's she talking about? Who the fuck is Mary? Is that... his wife? Well then who the hell is Ms. Miniskirt? No wait... is that his wife in the VHS tape? What the hell is going on? Oh look gameplay! And... a little girl? And a weird guy with a gun... This soundtrack slaps. I'm gonna go see if it's up on Napster yet. (this was 2001... again... my bones etc) I remember combing over low-res copies of that video for HOURS when it came out. Why are the nurses different? It's not snowing? Who are all these people... And why do they all sound like they put ketamine in their coffee. It was like a great big puzzle to work out and we had a ball theorizing and researching so when it came out we were HYPE. And that was largely because in short... we knew SOME things at release. Fog. Nurses. Big stick. Weird people. Banger soundtrack. Dead (but probably not) wife. And we presumed or supposed more... cult activity? New beasties? Radio maybe? But we effectively knew nothing about the plot. And the best part was, while they had a solid hook (Find dead lady who we love so huggy buggy much) and instant intrigue (Angela in the cemetery being weirder than a film by David Lynch), and a very familiar setting (we may have improved draw distance on the PS2, but we don't have to use it!), we still didn't really know what was going on. The plot was essentially unfolding out of a black box. Silent Hill 2 was quite content to be a slower burn than trying to boil the Lake Superior with a signal flare. You don't even see the main "villain" Pyramid Head until a few hours in and, as I pointed out in that other post, there's no flashy cut scene to introduce him and go WOOOOOO SCARYYYYY. He's just chillin' behind some prison bars (which that totes is normal in an apartment complex) and staring at you like I stare at the inside of my fridge when I really would like some cheese to materialize.
And then... like we're not even really sure what the hell is going on for the longest time. We meet our wife's hot twin with the key to a strip club and she keeps getting killed over and over... and things keep getting increasingly rapey and lewd in a way that's just uncomfortable more than anything... But even at the end. Even with the big reveal of "You killed your wife." they still don't ever explicitly state "And you killed her because you couldn't have sex with her anymore." It wasn't until you finished the game, and talked to someone else about it, or let your brain cook on it for a bit that you went... heyyyy... he's a horndog! (In fact... if I'm going to chide SH2 for anything it's that right at the very VERY end they tried to frame James's actions as understandable because the woman who was dying and frightened and in pain was mean to him. Yes, being a caretaker is hard. But Christ... pick a topic for discussion.) But contrast all that with Short Message. The marketing and such all said out loud "THIS IS ABOUT BULLYING" so even going in... I was already like "yep. The bully is probably us, but we had reasons because we have to be complicated and you aren't allowed to make the player feel bad" And lo was I correct. There was no... intrigue. I was never curious about the character or the people around her because I knew this story. They already told me what story they were telling so I could practically sing along, especially as a millennial that had to grow up watching little videos and skits in school about the evils of bullying. And when you are going to tell a trope-ish story, and you tell the audience what the trope is, it becomes "say the line" writ large. This isn't me advocating for super twisty unexpected plot arcs (looking at you, Supernatural). Far from it. You absolutely should tell a story in such a way that the audience understands how you got from point A to point Z, even if there are some surprises along the way (See Sixth Sense for that masterclass). Rather, what I'm missing from this (and frankly a lot of the Silent Hill games and honestly... media in general these days) is a sense of restraint. A sense of trust in their audience to "get it." They can't just plonk us in the fog with a radio and a stick and say "You're here to find your best friend/dog/cousin/wife/business partner. Good luck. Here's a weirdo to prattle cryptically at you in order to unsettle you immediately. Bye!" No! They have to tell us what kind of story they're telling and what themes are important. They can't just... give us a Silent Hill Game and trust that we know what to do with it. It's... insulting frankly. Especially as a longtime fan of the franchise who remembers when they did trust us and they did have faith in their work. I will say this in compliment to Short Message. The environment design was pretty cool. Especially the sticky-note hallways... they looked like leaves... and sometimes teeth... and like tightly packed bones in an ossuary. It didn't... say anything really. But it looked cool. And you can't go wrong with Akira Yamaoka's soundtrack. But... while I'm on the subject of design. Y'all. An animate sakura tree in an oversized hoodie is not scary. But bless you for at least having the restraint to not make her Pyramid Head.

Meet the Team - Sorbet
You can also find @sorbetowl on: Twitter @ sorbetowl Instagram @ sorbetowl
Tumblr media
Heya all, Sorbet here! I’m a fan-artist from Germany and discovered Horizon with the iconic e3 gameplay trailer from 2015 where Aloy fights the Thunderjaw and it was all over for me. I got the Collector’s Edition on Day 1 and have been in love with the series (and Ereloy) ever since, although I didn’t join the fandom until Forbidden West came around. It’s my first fandom to be a part of in well over a decade, and easily the one I’ve created the most for. Shaking off that art rust, one drawing of the blorbos at a time.
See the Q&A with Sorbet below the cut!
Q: What is a favorite piece of work you've done (completed, working on, in concept)?
The companion art that I did for the fanfic "Love Games" is near and dear to my heart, and my Burning Shores artwork because I felt that my art was heading in a direction that I liked.
Tumblr media
(Below Left: "Bear Hugs", Below Right: "Two Minutes")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Q: What are some of your favorite tropes to write, draw, or read?
In reading, I’m a sucker for Friends To Lovers, Hurt/Comfort and Opposites Attract. In art, I’m inspired the most by the comics and animation of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s that I grew up with.
Q: What is an unexpected thing or fun fact about you?
I work as a galvanizer in the aircraft industry, which means that I make metal more metal by submerging it in acid and electrocuting it so it doesn’t corrode for cabin pressure systems. Which is pretty metal, if I do say so myself.
Q: What has been your favorite thing about working on this project so far?
Seeing so many creators and fans of Horizon find common ground to make this visual novel a reality, fueled by the shared love for the franchise has been incredibly uplifting and inspiring.

having vague thoughts about E3 and the current state of AAA game development in general..
like yeah direct promotions have had more of an impact than Big Events for me, and the main thing I'd want to see out of E3 are trailers for new games or the conversations that follow online - but a few points on that
I can just as easily look up “new games for [platform] [year]” on youtube
Something about the way AAA games are built these days makes me get bored of them ⅔ of the way through, if I even make it that far, on top of them charging more for less content and hiding away the rest behind multiple DLC packs
I've mostly been buying indies the past few years and have gotten a lot of fun out of them; they continue to deliver a nearly unrivaled experience of fun gameplay mechanics and interesting/emotional stories at a ridiculously low cost
I also have emulators for going back and playing old games I really liked so I'm not exactly desperate for new games
and idk!! weird to see E3 officially ending but I also think the landscape is very different these days including the game companies themselves. I'm not a game dev so I can't rly speak to what the change has looked like on their end over the past 10-20 yrs.

35: Pictures from the deleted in-game encyclopedia
Extracted and posted by @xbaebsae here.
36: Render
The picture I posted was my screenshot, but you can find the full, original render here (3,840 x 4,937 pixels):

Extracted by @vls-gamingscrapbook here.
38: “Seeking Absolution - Interview with Urban Waite”
Watch the video on Ubisoft North America’s official YouTube channel here.
39: Holly in Far Cry 5
NPC line about Holly Pepper:
I remember a girl named Holly used to live here with her girlfriend Charlie. They were the first people I knew to join Eden's Gate.
You can hear it in the game.
40: Drew Holmes interview
It was deleted so the link doesn’t work, but you could read it here:

I posted a screenshot of it here in September 2018.

Watch the video on Ubisoft UK’s official YouTube channel here.
An article about it was also published on the now-deleted UbiBlog here (retrieved thanks to the Wayback Machine again).

46: Tennis courts?
Listen to Sharky and Nick talk about John’s tennis courts (which don’t exist in the game) here on @voices-of-hope-county.
I tried to trigger Nick’s comment in the game but couldn’t, so it may have been cut, but Sharky’s line still exists.
47: Seed Ranch
Picture by Environment Artist Brian Harries found on ArtStation.
48: John’s “sex room”
I tried to find more information about this mysterious room here.
49: Survivor’s comment in New Dawn
Find it in oasisstrings here. I know it’s in the game because someone recorded it once, but I couldn’t find the post...
50: Cultists’ lines at Seed Ranch
I recorded two videos and posted them here and here. The comment about John being so busy he barely goes to the ranch is in the second one.
51: “Your Question”
John’s letter for a cultist named Terry. See the screenshot of the complete answer on the Far Cry Wiki:

Note
On the "cozy" genre discourse; I am working in game marketing. For games in the last few years there has been this big surge of wholesome games that were also heavily marketed as such (thats why we now are having a Wholesome Direct and all that during E3 season) and overall successful with it, trend is rising - people want in, even if the game is not fully wholesome (bc of setting or more "violent" gameplay ect.) - thats where cozy comes in: marketing label for wholesome adjacent ime

Yeah, the minute people brought up games, the whole thing made so much more sense to me.
That other person was right that game genre definitions work differently because you have both gameplay mechanics and the look and content of the game to consider. It's much more obvious to me how a game can be both cozy and horror than why various other media should be called this rather than "goth but not scary" or "set at Halloween" or "I failed to understand this actually very creepy movie".
