I’ve been thinking about Faith lately and the fact that, unlike John and Jacob, she’s really a “faceless” Herald. Rachel apparently wasn’t the first, but I realized how apparent Faith Seed’s replaceability was in the game.
In Holland Valley, John’s face appears on signs, in posters, and there’s a giant YES billboard because “The Power of Yes” is his personal philosophy, indirectly taught to him by his abusive parents. In the Whitetail Mountains, Jacob’s face is also in posters, a giant sword (his symbol) is painted on a cliff, and “cull the herd” was inspired by his traumatic experience during the war. Those things are first and foremost about who they are and what they went through as people.
In the Henbane River, however, Faith’s face is nowhere to be seen. There aren’t any posters or signs, and the giant statue in her region is a statue of Joseph, not Rachel. Slogans like “Join Us In The Bliss” or “Walk The Path” have nothing to do with her past. Similarly, the song “Help Me Faith” isn’t about who she is and never mentions anything about her story; it’s written from the point of view of a sinner asking for her help (or even just wishing they had had “faith”, the concept). If someone else takes on the role of Faith Seed, there are no outdated posters and signs to remake, no statue to rebuild, and no song to rewrite. None of these things are personalized; they work no matter who “plays” Faith.
In theory, someone else could be the Baptist, and the Project’s army could have another leader, but John and Jacob can never be replaced, as people and brothers. On the other hand, any woman who has enough faith in Joseph, is willing to proselytize his message, able to use Bliss, and deemed fit for the role can be Faith. I think Greg Bryk summarized the situation well when he said she was more of an “essence” and a “feminine energy” Joseph needed rather than a specific person.
We barely know anything about Rachel’s life before the Project, but in the end, we don’t really need to. What truly counts for Eden’s Gate is what, as Faith Seed, she can do for the Father and his followers. Who she is, where she comes from, and what she looks like, that doesn’t matter for the role. She’s an idea; her face isn’t important.
I would even argue the reason Rachel seems to be considered the best Faith Seed is that not only does she do exactly what her brothers do (weaponizing her trauma and thinking what nearly destroyed her can make people better), which makes her as good a Herald as they are, but she also understood that she could use Faith Seed’s inherent facelessness as a weapon. “You see what you want to see”, she says, and remaining a mystery helps her do her job efficiently.

FC5/NEW DAWN OC
this template came from the amazing @fc6 they are literally amazing for making such a detailed and awesome oc layout <33
Tumblr media
Name: Caleb Nelson
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual
Faceclaim: none atm, just his canon look
Personality/Myers–Briggs Type: The Defender [ISFJ-A]
Hometown: Butte, Montana
Family: Younger Half sister, Ellie and found family in Hope County
Did anyone in their family survive into New Dawn (if applicable)?: Yes, his sister lives (she’s the captain) but some of his found family didn’t survive.
Relationship status: taken !
Did their partner survive into New Dawn (if applicable)?: yes
Reason for joining law enforcement in Hope County: was in the military before joining, he loved the discipline but hated that he wasn’t helping enough people so he moved to Hope and became a deputy
RELATIONSHIPS, FAR CRY 5
Tumblr media
Relationship with Adelaide: good friends; they don’t always talk about serious topics but she can always tell when somethings wrong and she looks out for him.
Relationship with Burke: tolerates him and thinks he’s an ass but still wants to save him from and think’s he doesn’t deserve to be left in the bliss.
Relationship with Eli: respects him, with a mutual trust. Not quite friends but definitely not strangers— Dep respects Eli’s authority and looks up to him for leadership
Relationship with Faith: (canon) he feels like he needs to save her, and can see the good in her old self as Rachel. Taking her down destroy’s him mentally and he wants to see her safe. (Non-cult au) he sees her like a younger sister, and they’re good friends.
Relationship with Grace: one of his best friends and also his ex. They’re both military and understand each other’s pain and trauma. They love silence and are the best team of snipers, they have terrible people skills but love each others company since they don’t need to speak to know what the other is thinking.
They tried being a thing— not quite dating but also not just hooking up. It didn’t work for them, it was too awkward but their mutual friendship brought them closer together so it worked out in their favour.
Relationship with Deputy Hudson: friend and co-worker— trio of Joey, Staci and Caleb all get drinks from time to time at the eagle and like to banter at work pre-canon or non-cult au
Relationship with Hurk: good friend, doesn’t admit it aloud but he likes hanging with Sharky and Hurk— he’s too quiet for them but he loves listening to Hurk’s cool stories about Rook Islands and Kyrat and has a soft spot for the two cousins in terms of police protocol.
Relationship with Jacob: (canon) enemy— probably the most hated out of the seeds because he’s also military and can’t understand how Jacob could have the same life experience and turn out so evil. (Non-cult au) get’s along super well, they go hunting in the woods and have a mutual respect for each other.
Relationship with Jerome: Not quiet father figure so like close friend who he respects and loves dearly. he’s not religious but Jerome’s wisdom and caring nature keeps him sane after everything he’s gone through— genuinely couldn’t survive without him
Relationship with Jess: terrified of her because she’s dutch’s niece so he’s polite and stays clear of her mostly but they are friendly when they do work together
Relationship with John: (canon) enemy but kinda crushing on him, despite still hating what the seed’s do to people he wants to help John in some way. (Non-cult au) his boyfriend. Literally the biggest simp for him and John is the only one who could get this stoic 6”2, mountain of a man to feel flustered
Relationship with Joseph: (canon) also enemy, but he’s not as intimidated by him as Jacob. (Non-cult au) like Jacob and faith he see’s Joe like a sibling since he’s dating John but he stands out as the responsible one so he respects Joe more and is the one he asks permission to date his younger brother [like the dad of the family]
Relationship with Kim Rye: loves her to bits and sees her like his family. Pretty much in line with canon where he gets adopted into the Rye’s and she gives the best hugs too
Relationship with Mary May: good friend, he can hear his parent’s voice telling him that she’s the perfect type of woman to marry and settle down with but he views her like family and they both friend zone each other at the Christmas party at the Rye’s
Relationship with Nick Rye: the same as Kim’s but his hugs are more suffocating (and no less better)
Relationship with Deputy Pratt: friend and co-worker, they get along well and are often partnered together on shifts so he’s a little closer to him than with Hudson
Relationship with Sharky: (canon) his boyfriend. Doesn’t even know how it happened but he just loves him to bits and does a lot of his fighting so he can save Hope County and have a life with him, he’s just smitten all around. (Non-cult au) one of his closest friends next to grace where sharky makes fun of him lightheartedly for dating a fancy-pants seed.
Relationship with Tracey: kinda similar to faith where he just wants to see her happy and safe.
Relationship with Wheaty: takes the kid under his wing especially after Eli— always calls him kid and teaches him all his skills and gets him vinyl’s for his birthday
Relationship with Whitehorse: pretty similar to Jerome except he actually sees Whitehorse as the dad he never had. He totally calls him dad accidentally at work but he also trusts him with his life and the sheriff always looks out for him.
RELATIONSHIPS, FAR CRY NEW DAWN
Tumblr media
Relationship with Carmina: (sobbing) he literally adores her— teaches her everything and spoils her to bits. He feels so guilty about being gone for so long (and how he hasn’t heard from people like Wheaty) so he would literally give his life to see her safe and happy with her family.
Relationship with Gina: get along like a house on fire, not super close but they cause a lot of chaos and it reminds him of the good old days in Hope County. He’s also super happy for Hurk and Blade
Relationship with Grace: Like nothing has changed, they get even closer once he makes it back to prosperity. Both of them are so traumatised from it all but her silent friendship is all the comfort he needs to feel like he’s back with family
Relationship with Ethan: thinks he’s annoying but says nothing
Relationship with Hurk: Still good friends with Hurk and tries to comfort him whenever he starts wondering if his friends in Kyrat and Rook Islands have made it as well.
Relationship with Jerome: Literally cries for hours when he first see’s that he’s okay— he lost Whitehorse and wondered if Jerome had died too. He’s the embodiment of all moral support and stability for him and he’s proud to call Jerome his friend.
Relationship with Joseph: (sticking w canon bc my non-cult au there’s no collapse) Joe won’t ever be what his found family is to him but he does learn to accept him and they become something like friends? Dep kinda blames himself for not protecting his family so an eternity serving Joseph feels like his penance? he’s basically heartbroken and lost but he only has him left so he befriends Joseph
Relationship with Kim Rye: He misses the Rye’s so much— needs the biggest group hug from them and they don’t notice his crying cause it’s under the mask.
Relationship with Nick Rye: same for nick but they also do some scouting together and catch up on old times
Relationship with Nana: he’s kinda scared of her but she tells her stories about her sniper to him and grace because it’s something they all relate to and understand.
Relationship with Sharky: since this is the canon ending and they’re dating Dep literally collapses at the sight of him since he thought Sharky had died— sometimes he still can’t believe his eyes when he’s there and he needs like a whole week of constant cuddles in prosperity from him just so he can walk again
Little canon divergent idea I’ve been sitting on since new dawn released: sharky adopts a little girl (she’s like 3 or 4 yrs old) and wants not only a purpose but for blade to have something close to a sibling. He also can’t leave her to die so he takes her in, names her Adelaide after his aunt (and Hurk starts crying) and raises her with the knowledge that her other dad would have been Dep.
He think’s Dep died just like Dep think’s the same of him so her bedtime stories are all the badass missions he did with him. There’s nothing he can do to bring him back but she grows up thinking her other dad is like a superhero (which he absolutely is cause he saved Hope County).
They’re on the outskirts of prosperity, down by the river and she waddles off one day as Sharky turns to put something down. He has a heart attack thinking that she’s about to fall in the radioactive water but someone catches her first and holds her on their hip.
Sharky has no idea who that is and is ready to deck them if he doesn’t let his daughter go but the Judge recognises that its Sharky instantly and yeah basically that’s their little family reunion where Dep meets his daughter and the two of them cry
Relationship with Security Captain: His younger half sister ‘Ellie’. They have the same dad but Dep’s mother died when he was young and then remarried hence why they’re half siblings. Both of them hate their dad but she moved away to California to join the Security team and he left Butte for Hope County
They don’t have the best relationship but the events of new dawn bring them closer together. Dep offers to help take down the twins and Ethan (hence the gun for hire) and also he steps up if Jerome offers since he’s old and wants him to stay safe but Ellie is tough as fuck just like him and she mostly encourages him to stay in prosperity to be with his family whilst she does the fighting. His time to fight is kinda over and now he gets to be with them after so long and that acknowledgment brings them together as siblings.
FAR CRY 5 INFO
Tumblr media
Feelings on the Project at Eden's Gate in general: He hates what they do to people, how they hurt and indoctrinate others but he also wants to help them and the seeds. He respects religious people but he doesn’t like when people are hurt
How did they feel about being seen as a savior to Hope County?: He knows deep down that he’s the saviour but he’s so selfless that he doesn’t like the title. All he sees it as is protecting his family and home— he doesn’t mind when people thank him cause he feels valued but if you call him a hero or a saviour he will blush.
Peggie radio station, normal radio station, or no music?: Caleb’s low-key a fan of the cult radio in holland valley. Faith’s version gives him an existential crisis and in the Whitetails he likes silence over anything just to appreciate the view more. But only on his own— if he’s with friends he plays whatever is on or something from Sharky’s disco playlists.
However he absolutely loves the old 50’s music in faiths region
In what order were the Heralds taken down?: faith and John are interchangeable but mostly it’s John, Faith, Jacob (either way he’s always last) and then Joe obviously
Say YES in Fall’s End church?: no both times cause Johnny gets riled up ;)
Say YES in John’s bunker?: same answer above
Did they believe Joseph in the end?: not really with his belief systems but he feels so guilty because if he had listened to Joseph talk about the collapse he’s convinced himself he could have saved everyone if he got them to safety instead of trying to kill the seed siblings
Reaction to Burke and Virgil’s deaths: not overbearingly sad but every death on his hands makes him feel like he’s not good enough. Their death affects them like everyone else but he is at peace knowing Virgil is with his son in some way
Reaction to killing Eli: guilt and anger, triggers a lot of his ptsd from the military coupled with Jacob’s mind games and wishing he could have been strong enough to stop it. No amount of support or comfort will convince him of that and his death is one of the worst that affects him.
Feelings when killing Jacob: similar to Eli where it really does a number on him mentally. Even when he’s finally killed him, Jacob’s region basically destroys him so he’s left with a lot of trauma despite knowing he’s not gonna hurt anyone anymore. He really needs to rely on his found family and needs lots of physical touch to remind him that he’s not in the cages anymore.
Feelings when killing John: he definitely feels empty and responsible— John was the one he felt like he could truly save and he blames his death on his inability to try harder for him despite how he, and all the seeds hurt his family.
Feelings when killing Faith: similar with John where he really felt he could have saved her— he feels like he failed as a brother all over again and he gets a lot of flashbacks to his own sister from the bliss and yeah he basically feels really guilty.
Feelings when fighting Joseph: he’s exhausted, kinda the tipping point and he almost feels like he can’t do it but when his fam all rally together with him he feels better.
Most used weapon(s): (I don’t know weapons that well) but its a sniper, the recurve bow mostly and for fights its a rifle and the handgun w the shark on the side of it for sharkyyy
Stealth or guns blazing?: mostly stealth but that’s lowkey impossible w Hurk and Sharky so its a mix
Gun-for-hire(s) or fang-for-hire(s) most traveled with: grace and boomer together OR sharky and Hurk
FAR CRY NEW DAWN INFO
Tumblr media
What happened to them in the bunker with Joseph?: seven year long depression basically— misses his family and grieves for the deputies and Whitehorse. Only in the later years does he get close to Joe and mostly he just keeps to himself
Do they ever speak/take off the mask?: (with Joe and New Eden) he only takes the mask off when he’s on his own, and he doesn’t speak a word as its how he internalises his grief. (With prosperity) he still doesn’t talk a lot but whispers with his husband sharky and confesses with Jerome for comfort but he still can’t talk around the others yet. The rye’s, grace and everyone else are super understanding and they see it as like his trauma response so they just hug him. Similar with the mask, only sharky, their daughter and Jerome get to see his face.
Is their loyalty to Joseph genuine?: its genuine in the sense he’s loyal to him over Ethan and the twins but when he finds his family he would pick them any day and would like to think he’s gotten close enough to Joe for him to understand that his family is with prosperity.
Feelings on New Eden as a whole: likes Joe but mostly just sticks on his own and Joe— he does sometimes teach the children how to use a bow or do some gardening with them when he needs to feel human again.
Feelings on the Highwaymen and twins: they hurt his fam so he’s not a fan but it’s mostly his sister who fights them.
Thoughts on the Security Captain being chosen by Joseph: doesn’t want to see Ellie hurt so he’s protective and cautious
Did they try and help Ethan lead while Joseph was in the North?: no lol, but he knew the people respected him a little more so he subtly tried to comfort some of the people despite being new eden’s recluse of sorts
Was Ethan’s betrayal anticipated?: yes but he’s honestly not too invested in Ethans tantrum
If the Security Captain shot Joseph, how did they react?: feels sort of at peace? Like all the seeds are at rest and wants to just go home.
If the Security Captain spared Joseph, how did they react?: understands why, and he’s not mad at his sister bc they’re both traumatised so he can’t blame her.
If given the opportunity, would they have shot Joseph themselves? Did they?: probably not, because of being in the bunker and their history but he’s also so sick of killing that he just wants to be with his family.
Do they stay in Hope County after the events of New Dawn?: yes, his fam are there and that’s all he could ever asked for— plus the effort he went through for 5, Hope is like home and he can’t see himself leaving.

Joseph: Collapse secret ending dialogue:
Faith: Sorry, I can't come to the phone right now. I'm busy growing our little sprout, so leave me a message! Faith and Joseph: God bless! Joseph: Uh, hey baby, it's me. I'm just calling to make sure you got to Sarah's okay. I worry... a little. Mm. I just, uh, have a good time tonight. Okay? And, um... It'll be great to see Sarah and I know you guys have a lot to catch up on, and, uh... I am going to, uh, I got a plan! I got a project for tonight. I'm gonna build the crib while you're gone. So, you have a good time, and enjoy the chat, and enjoy dinner, and, uh, when you get back, there will be a surprise waiting for you. No, it's going to be good, I promise. Miss you, already. Bye.
Faith: Sorry, I can't come to the phone right now. I'm busy growing our little sprout, so leave me a message! Faith and Joseph: God bless! Joseph: Hey. Hey, um, so... I've been trying to put the crib together... it's looking... Pretty... pretty good, pretty good... there's supposed to be four sides to it, right? No, I'm kidding, it's uh... It's finished. And, uh, I, uh, I feel pretty good about things. I'm not saying you shouldn't check it over but, uh... it looks good. I think our baby's going to have sweet dreams in that crib someday. Um... I love you. Call me back as soon as you get this, okay?
Faith: Sorry, I can't come to the phone right now. I'm busy growing our little sprout, so leave me a message! Faith and Joseph: God bless! Joseph: Um... hey baby, it's me... uh... Phew... I'm just having a little uh... I just uh... haven't heard from you, and uh... Usually you're pretty good about calling back, so, just, give me a call, okay? I'm worried. I love you so much. Can't wait to kiss that belly when you get back home. Bye.

From the Inquisitor to the Baptist: The Evolution of John Seed
Tumblr media
So who was John Seed, the Inquisitor? And most importantly, who is John Seed, the Baptist?
All the sources and references indicated by the superscript numbers will be given in the last post.
Part 5: Conclusion
It took more than three years to develop Far Cry 5. A lot can change in three years, and as a matter of fact, when it comes to John Seed, a lot did change.
In terms of his appearance, it seems the idea has always been for him to look stylish. He’s always had a dark beard and slicked-back hair, and although its color has varied, a shirt. Then came his vest, sunglasses, watch, coat, earring, belt, and key, and his outfit steadily evolved to become the one we know today. Many tattoos, for the most part inspired by the seven deadly sins or religion in general, gradually appeared on his hands and arms as well.
Before he became “the Baptist”, his title used to be “the Inquisitor”, and although this term is nowhere to be found in Far Cry 5 (or even in its files, from what I’ve seen), John’s Gate was renamed “The Inquisitor’s Grave” in Far Cry New Dawn. Indeed, canonically, his bunker is his “grave” because John either lost his life right outside of it or trying to reach it.
Tumblr media
But in my opinion, the Inquisitor didn’t die in Far Cry 5; he was already long dead when the game came out, and the most important and meaningful changes John underwent during development were not of a physical nature.
In terms of his personality and morals, he’s always been a violent man, and while he still brutalizes people in Far Cry 5, evidence suggests he went from a threatening, conceited, hypocritical, and primarily sadistic individual to a more polite-looking, subtle, emotional, and tortured person whose ego is clearly not a big and strong as it seems, or as he wants others to believe.
When he was still called the Inquisitor, John seemed self-assured and to always have everything under control, like nothing could affect him or his (high) opinion of himself, and other people’s feelings didn’t matter. Now, as the Baptist, this air of confidence is more of a facade; he’s emotionally immature, tends to easily lose his temper when things don’t go his way, and his sense of self-worth greatly depends on what he believes his brother Joseph’s opinion of him is.
The Inquisitor looked like an insensitive, somewhat stereotypical torturer (and killer) who, although he seemed to have faith in the Project, would often use it as an excuse to cause harm and satisfy his dark urges. He was cruel and selfish, would never accept responsibility for his actions, and was mainly driven by his desire to inflict pain. The Baptist still hurts and mutilates others, and he may still take satisfaction in what he does, but what apparently counts more for him now is the result. He’s convinced himself that his childhood trauma was in fact a positive and freeing experience and that it could benefit other people, so in his own indisputably unhealthy and harmful way, he tries to “save” them.
The Inquisitor would indulge in his luxurious ranch, think some rules didn’t apply to him, and mostly care about himself and his own pleasure. The Baptist is a perfectionist who doesn’t hesitate to put his comfort aside to achieve his goals, refuses to put himself “on a pedestal”, and can work tirelessly to make his brother proud; this is what drives and obsesses him.
At first glance, it may look like John is still the Inquisitor, and I think it’s interesting that most of the things that can help us see him in a different light (Joseph’s eulogy for him⁵⁵, the message at Seed Ranch⁵⁶, the letter to Terry⁵¹, Hudson’s line⁴⁴) are usually found after his death. In his final moments, John looks heartbroken that the Junior Deputy could never “understand”, “believe” in, and “care” about what he thought he was doing all along: saving people... and that included the two of them. His last words? A prayer for their soul.
Tumblr media
It’s only when he’s gone that we’re able to comprehend who John Seed truly was, to see the person behind his carefully crafted image of a self-assured, self-controlled, and strong man. Only when it’s too late can we fully realize that, under the surface and behind the violence, was a deeply flawed individual but also a beautifully complex character, full of contradictions, who knew he wasn’t perfect and spent most of his life trying to meet others’ expectations, or at least what he believed those were, but usually ended up causing much suffering to many people in the process, including himself.
The Inquisitor essentially was a monster without a heart; the Baptist is just a human who never managed to fully open his.
Thank you for reading ♥ Find all sources and references in Part 6!

Chainsaw Man has officially become a Far Cry 5 knockoff. As I think about it further, way too many scenes in CSM parallel scenes in Far Cry 5. Makima shooting Power is somewhat similar to the scene where Faith makes one of the MC's companions shoot a man. Barem's plan and demeanor are somewhat similar to Joseph Seed's, and he even escalates the conflict in the same way, with the exact same timing with the song. The Hybrids can also be seen as analogous to Joseph's family, and the chainsaw zombies from the devil contract to the nuke from Pagan Min. There is even the parallel between Nostradamus and the doomsday prophecy that Joseph warned about, and the one both Eden's Gate and the Chainsaw Man Church was founded on. The only thing we need to create a full blown FC5:Shonen edition is a parallel to the Rookie in FC5.

Ok so NO SPOILERS PLZ
But I’m only two or three chapters into Higurashi Ch 2 and here’s all I have to say
Tumblr media
Transmasc Mion????? (This is mostly a joke. But hear me out )
She keeps calling herself “old man”, literally says “sometimes I wonder why I wasn’t born a boy!” I know it’s as a joke, but it keeps going. There’s just so much.
Even Keiichi says something later like “If Mion were a boy, we’d be like two peas in a pod. Actually, it’s kinda like that already!” 🤔
NOT TO MENTION SHION who confuses me to no end rn (is she real? A persona? The game does a great job at making it so hard to tell I love it) is described as a lot more feminine than Mion- like yeah I guess she is. But the fact that gender and femininity keeps coming up (especially when used as a contrast to Mion-) kinda 🏳️‍⚧️??
ALSO the part where Rena talks about how appearances can be deceiving, and how most people are almost the opposite of how they appear. I know it was implying that Mion has a softer side (Shion), but come ON man. That’s just… trans coded line-
Also there’s a line where Keiichi is thinking about meeting Shion (Mion) again and is like “well, I can call (Mion) Shion, right? I mean, if Mion is just having fun trying out a different personality I should go along with it”
I guess that last one only really works if Shion and Mion are the same person, but idk Mann
Tbh this whole chapter so far is pretty trans coded does anyone else remember Mion teasing Keiichi about wearing the maid outfit
AND the focus on gender, femininity, identity in general, and living some sort of double life where u act different… Like I know there’s a different good message there but I’m playing this during pride month soooo 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️ sorry Mion I’m hitting u with the trans beam 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️
I’ll update with more proof as I progress the game 🫡
