Just a few hours ago, one of my heroes of all time passed away. Edward O. Wilson was one of the biggest minds of all times. And a big mind must certainly have something to do with the superorganism he loved and studied for a big bunch of his life: ants. So, why a spider image to commemorate Prof. Wilson? Cause he was among the few to witness the escape behavior of some arboreal tarantulas like this Avicularia hirschii. Suspended with just two legs at the edge of its home-leaf. The depicted behavior in the photo is rarely seen and every time it happened was after being disturbed by foraging predacious ants. In this case there was a big swarming of Labidus sp. ants on the forest floor but they already left the leaf. The spider remains suspended there for awhile until it senses the danger has passed. Predacious ants cannot get their mandibles through the tarsal scopulae nor can they walk very well on the leg pile hairs. Los Amigos Biological Station, Peru Farewell Prof. Wilson, the one who saw the “big thing” in every little being. #edwardowilson #biodiversity #spider #ant #nature @ilcp_photographers https://www.instagram.com/p/CYAROINK7BY/?utm_medium=tumblr

All arts should be participatory because we could be all artists. Here are two quotes by Edward O. Wilson first why participatory art is so important: “You teach me, I forget. You show me, I remember. You involve me, I understand.” And second is why we are not all artists yet: “We have created a Star Wars civilization, with Stone Age emotions, medieval institutions, and godlike technology.” #edwardowilson #ideasrex #quotes #philosophy #nature #instabeauty #seaandmountains #thinkingoutloud #onart #artist (at Risan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVsxusbMZpb/?utm_medium=tumblr

Vrijdag 9 oktober – The Biophilia Hypothesis. Wikipedia: ‘The urge to affiliate with other forms of life.’ Of: ‘The biophilia hypothesis (also called BET) suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life.’

Half Earth by Edward O. Wilson
While i'm out here giving book recommendations, I definitely have to include this one. This is, perhaps, the most comprehensive and most important case-study-turned-storybook on biodiversity for the layman of this decade. The book focuses primarily on the sheer amount and diversity of life on planet Earth (unfathomable) in order to set up the reader with a broad appreciation of species before delving into the real issues at hand, i.e. climate change, poaching, and human development. The last third of the book is quite unexpectedly optimistic and proposes a not-so-outlandish solution for these same problems: dedicating 50% of land on Earth to wildlife conservation. The author even specifies which biomes on Earth he suggests to protect. With the focal point on the struggle of human vs. nature towards the close of the book, Edward O. Wislon gives a beautiful perspective altering conclusion on our place in the biosphere. A true masterpiece and must-read for any and all concerned with environmental impact written by a dedicated expert in the field.

“Destroying rainforest for economic gain is like burning a Renaissance painting to cook a meal.” - Edward O. Wilson This is so true! All the palm oil in the world is not worth the extinction of Orangutans, Pygmy Elephants, Proboscis Monkeys, Bornean and Javan Gibbons and all the other life that calls the Borneo Rainforest home. This same argument can be made for rainforests and species elsewhere in the world like the Amazon, The Central African rainforest, Madagascar, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Papua/New Guinea, and other places under threat. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. #DesignedByJeriRae from a stock photo from Pixabay via Typorama. #Quote #EdwardOWilson #Rainforest #Borneo #Orangutans #ExtinctionIsForever #SaveTheRainforest #BoycottPalmOil #RainforestHabitat #DesignedByJeriRae https://www.instagram.com/p/CAxqxlqBBNg/?igshid=1nsrkafbq8o1k

This week is 'Parks Week'. I know some people who might spend a whole year and never visit a nature reserve. Insanity if you ask me! Our parks help us realise how much our physical and mental well-being continues to depend on healthy and enriching affiliations with the natural world. Conserving nature through the presence of national parks renders our lives more attractive, more wondrous, more worthwhile. Our parks represent a tangible act of redemption for having jeopardised so much of creation. When we impoverish the natural world, we reduce our potential for physical, material, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual growth and well-being. We diminish the possibilities for individual and collective development. A life of meaning and value depends on the richness of our connections with the natural world. We achieve our fullest humanity by celebrating our widest and deepest dependence on nature and life. Australia is projected to double it's population in the next 50 years. Our natural biospheres are already threatened by the putrid the breeding machines that are human beings. An ideal concept of harmonization comes to mind; to double the area of our parks in the next decade, or better yet, take Edward O. Wilson's proposal and dedicate half the surface of the Earth to nature. Visit a park, you'll feel what I'm talking about. -- #parksweek #parks #parksaustralia #parksvictoria #nationalpark #naturereserve #edwardowilson #biosphere #nature #naturalworld #biophilia #environmentalism #environment #earth #planetearth #ecology #ecologicallimits

DEPRESSION, IT'S OUR HABITAT! Biophilia - Edward O. Wilson.
DEPRESSION, IT’S OUR HABITAT! Biophilia – Edward O. Wilson.
“I imagined that this place and all its treasures were mine alone and might be so forever in memory, if the bulldozer came.”
To explore and affiliate with life is a deep and complicated process in our mental development. Our existence depends on this propensity, our spirit is woven from it, hope rises on its currents.
To the degree that we come to understand other organisms, we will place a…

Try the impossible to achieve the unusual
Try the impossible to achieve the unusual: even the fearful can achieve. #leadership #EdmundHillary #EdwardOWilson #FloydPatterson #PhDplanning
Everyone who attends a certain type of English school is given a nickname.  Mine was Floyd Patterson. In 1956, Floyd Pattersonwas the youngest boxer to become the world heavyweight champion.  I was certainly not a heavyweight but perhaps I was pugnacious in defending myself against larger and older boys.  Floyd Patterson had a maxim that drove his career: ‘you try the impossible to achieve the…
