Bokuzen Hidari in The Lower Depths (Akira Kurosawa, 1957)

Toshiro Mifune was to Akira Kurosawa as John Wayne was to John Ford: a charismatic leading man. And like Ford, Kurosawa had a kind of stock company of actors who regularly appeared in his films. Among them was Bokuzen Hidari, who was something like Kurosawa's equivalent of Ford's Hank Worden: a somewhat goofy-looking character player, usually employed as comic relief. Hidari appeared in nine of Kurosawa's films, but he had his most prominent role in The Lower Depths, Kurosawa's adaptation of Maxim Gorky's play about a collection of society's outcasts living in a decaying flophouse. As Kahei, an elderly pilgrim who seeks shelter with the group of drunks, prostitutes, thieves, and gamblers, Hidari becomes the conscience of the group, a grandfatherly presence who counsels hope and dispenses wisdom that is usually not heeded. It is a standout performance in a film that showcases brilliant acting on the part of the entire ensemble. Mifune has a key role, in which he demonstrates his usual hyperactive virility, but never overshadows the work of the company, which also includes Isuzu Yamada as the grasping landlady, Osugi, who has the hots for Mifune's Sutekichi; Ganjiro Nakamura as Rokubei, her jealous husband; and Kyoko Kagawa as Okayo, Osugi's sister, who is also attracted to Sutekichi. The Lower Depths betrays its theatrical origins in its confinement to a single set (with outlying areas), but Kurosawa's camera, under the supervision of cinematographer Kazuo Yamazaki, never makes the film feel static. The story ranges from pathos -- the death of a consumptive woman -- to violence in the altercations among the various tenants to black comedy. A high-spirited musical moment at the end, in which some of the tenants improvise a song and dance, is interrupted by the news that the drunken actor (Kamatari Fujiwara) has killed himself, which leads to a bitter, memorable curtain line. Kurosawa's reputation has declined in recent years, partly from a perception that he catered more to Western tastes than his contemporaries Yasujiro Ozu and Kenji Mizoguchi, but The Lower Depths reveals him as a master in his direction of actors.

A unique manga in which a high school girl earnestly presents her recommendations for Japanese films, including "Tatsuya Fujiwara manipulating machos and being attacked by a large group of people.

I like Japanese films and often watch them, but thanks to Houkichi's presentation, the number of films I watch has obviously increased.

As I mentioned in the article, I will watch "HiGH & LOW THE MOVIE. I can't help but wonder what kind of person Amber is. But I guess it's a seasoned movie, so if I suddenly start from the movie, I'll be confused. I can only complement that with Houkichi's (or was it Maria's?) synopsis. I can only supplement the movie with the synopsis of "Houkichi" (or was it Maria?).

I liked the situation in "Snow Flower" in Finland with nothing in hand, a situation that is very much like a Japanese movie with a lot of flair. Scenes that would be impossible in real life, but would work in such a worldview, are very interesting.

Personally, I like "Masked Ward," "Murder in the Corpse House," and "Twelve Dying Children," so I am hoping that one day you will present them.

All are live-action adaptations of mystery novels. Both of them are not well received by movie fans, but I kind of like them. As for "The Masked Ward," I went to the theater and watched it on TV. I think I like the fact that the story is told in a serious way, ignoring all the "how can that be?

Incidentally, I recently attended the previews of "Ransom" starring Yoon Sung-ho and "G-Men" starring Yuta Kishi.

Both are really interesting. I was able to watch "Ransom" a max of 3 times in the online previews, and I completed it. It's a crime suspense film about a ransom kidnapping, but it's so full of crazy settings and scenes that I never get tired of watching it.

I think I will watch "G-Men" one more time in the theater. The cast was good and the whole structure was great. It's been a while since I laughed out loud in the theater.

Kei Tanaka is really funny (including in his uniform), so if you are interested in this movie, I highly recommend you to see it.

If you wanted to know who was my favourite performer from Shiki CATS (at least currently, Yoshiko Hattori holds a special place in my heart as well), it is Miki Okudaira who plays Jellylorum/Griddlebone. She started in Shiki CATS during the Osaka 2016 run and has continued through to the current Fukuoka 2021 run, and will most likely be a part of the Nagoya 2022 run as well when it starts in July.

Elaina was third with 1990 votes, Yui Yuigahama was fourth with 1213 votes, Asuna Yuuki was fifth with 1059 votes, Rikka Takanashi was sixth with 943 votes, Chika Fujiwara was seventh with 837 votes and Utaha Kasumigaoka was last with 683 votes.

Also a favorite, this time at even money, Yuuta Togashi broke Touma Kamijou 3052-2670 to win the Sapphire Pendant, Kazuto Kirigaya was third with 1834 votes, Nasa Yuzaki was fourth with 1501 votes, Levi was fifth with 1238 votes, Kazuma Satou was sixth with 1017 votes, Archer was seventh with 873 votes and Tomoya Okazaki was last with 665 votes.

Nanami Aoyama prevailed over Tooru 3075-2875 to win the Sapphire Bracelet. There's a kind of boyish glee in even the title, The Hidden Fortress, promising secrets and surprises. This rousing, entertaining, and, yes, occasionally silly adventure story is remembered most today for inspiring George Lucas on the first Star Wars film, which is now clunkily known as Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope (1977). From Akira Kurosawa's film Lucas borrowed the spunky rebel princess and the fretful, quarreling sidekicks, and renamed them Leia, C3PO, and R2D2, but more importantly he borrowed the insouciance, the delight in cinematic action. For once, Toshiro Mifune's bravado doesn't steal as many scenes as it usually does, thanks largely to Kurosawa's employment of the disgruntled foot-soldiers Tahei (Minoru Chiaki) and Matashichi (Katamari Fujiwara), whose cynicism, venality, and outright greed serve as foils for the heroics of Mifune's Gen. Rokurota. Like the first Star Wars, The Hidden Fortress never rises to the level of serious thought -- in fact, it's more straightforward fun than the Lucas oeuvre: There's no mysterious Force to suggest spiritual overtones and to weigh down the adventure with mythmaking.
