Review Everything 23 - Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance.
I think the thing I'm actually enjoying the most from the Rebuild movies is that the characters are much more fleshed out.
Asuka has always been my favorite pilot, for example. In Advance we actually get to see the reason she's a cocky little jerk. She's already graduated collage, takes her time off to actually train so she can fight in and out of an Eva, and is a Polyglot who speaks at least 4 languages. It's very clear that she is the best Eva pilot, which she demonstrates more than once, because she's worked the hardest, there's no nepotism involved in her selection like there was for Shinji and Rey.
I’m really enjoying this iteration of the story. I don’t even really have any deep thoughts or critiques so far because I’m just having too much fun.
Getting to see the new pilot, Mari, in action was cool. I knew she existed but not what her deal was, and had decided to like her before watching this. If they’re gonna stretch the original story out into four movies we would either need a lot more about these kids [not super possible, given that they’re only so old and we learn all the most important things about their back stories in the OG series] or they’d have to add another one to change the dynamic. And I like a confident character who knows what they want, Mari is that to a T. It’s interesting to see that they, in the same scene, where like, “Mari can do stuff none of other other pilots can.” And then, “OH YEAH WELL SO CAN SHNJI.”
The animation remains gorgeous, watching the Eva flop around after going beast/berserker mode is particularly fun. There’s also a lot of really nice color grading in scenes where we’re not at NERVE HQ, like the cool blue tones of the ocean restoration plant. I’m also a sucker for world building that a character in the show doesn’t explain to me, which we get a lot of here. A better understanding of what a geofront is, how the shelters work, what the kids get up to when they’re not at school, how this version of Japan differences from the one usually shown to us in Anime. Lots of yummy little world building tidbits. I also like that we had time for the kids to go and be kids, get to know each other more outside of school and NERVE, without it making the pacing any less enjoyable.
I am also greedily gobbling up the hints that Kaworu is a Roland from The Dark Tower like figure, where he has some understanding that this has all happened before, but differently, in ways he wants to change. Curious to know if the red eyes are gonna pan out to mean anything. Used to be that just Rey and Kaworu had them, but Shinji does when using his new powers in this anime, as does Mari.
In Summery: Power creep is fun in a series were the bad guys are trying to remake God.
Overall: 8/10

Evangelion is probably, hands down one of my favorite franchises. If not one of the most formative series I was introduced to in late middle school (doctor who being the other). I rewatch it a lot. When 3.33+1.01 (Thrice Upon a Time) was released I rewatched the entire series in order starting with the orignal anime season.
I was introduced through the rebuilds. Around 2015, Adult Swim’s Toonami block did a special airing of 1.11(you are (not) alone), 2.22(you can(not) advance), and 3.33(you can(not) redo). I remember DVR’ing them because they showed at like 3am Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in order.
There’s not a lot of experiences from my early teens I actively wish to relieve, but sometimes I rewatch the Rebuilds late at night just to try. Just to, for 2 hours, feel like I’m 14, witnessing Shinji Ikari’s three movie mental breakdown for the first time again. It’s midnight and I have the volume way down and the subtitles on because I’m definitely not supposed to be up but I can’t look away. I understand for the first time, the appeal of mecha anime, a subgenre that up to then never interested me. I also think NGE played a significant part in why I like psychological horror (and what I like in psychological horror) with the way the series systemically picks apart each major character in a uniquely way tragic.
Shinji is a loser, and he has his father to blame and himself to blame and being human to blame. And the series is about giant robots and confusing plot lines but it’s also fundamentally about humanity and human connection and as someone who, at the time was the same age as the kids, who struggled with connecting with other people despite wanting to, Evangelion hit me in a way that I’ll likely never fully articulate.

Been meaning to watch Neon Evangelion, any recommendations of where to start??
ok so i just finished it for the first time i was advised by several friends here is what you need to know:
watch the original series on netflix. the netflix version is remastered and includes the director's cuts of the final few episodes. it is a new dub but i like it better than the old dub (yes and as a new fan i know this is controversial). unless you like subs better - in general for all of this i suggest dub, but with english SUBTITLES (not cc unless you need it) on, because sometimes things are translated differently. one thing to note is that the closing credits songs are not the originals because netflix couldn't get the rights, look up all the different versions of fly me to the moon on youtube.
watch the "end of evangelion" movie on netflix. same deal, new dub voice actors, etc. the TLDR here is that this show has three different fucking endings because of running out of budget, fan outrage, etc, and this movie was the creator's FUCK YOU to the fans who didn't like the original ending. it is...extremely jarring but very important. there are a few other movies like death true and death and rebirth but these basically were theatrical releases of pieces of either this movie, or the final few episodes, mashed with recap content, so they're not needed.
watch the 4 rebuild of evangelion movies, the directors cuts, on amazon prime (you don't need to buy them, they're included). the dub here is the original dub VAs so you can get an idea of what those were like, and i suggest the english subtitles (not cc) here too. for additional context, these four movies were made throughout the 2000s and 2010s so the creator (Anno) could build the story as he originally intended, without network or budget or time constraints, and it starts out the same but then changes the ending dramatically. again, the three endings all layer on top of each other, the experience of evangelion is a metatextual one. the films are, in order: Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone, Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance, Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.
content warnings: body horror, many MANY references to christianity, suicide, sexual assault and harassment, weird underage shit, abuse of various kinds, depression - this show is VERY VERY dark, but with some very hopeful messages, so please go into it carefully and well prepared, especially if you have traumas yourself.
I would suggest at least SKIMMING these 4 articles (maybe dodge around some spoilers) before watching to get an idea of how the text speaks to itself and the audience. while every piece of media is influenced by the audience, this one especially is a LOT:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2019/06/27/how-evangelion-opened-my-eyes-my-depression/
it does seem like a lot but unlike a lot of classic anime it really is not that long, it's like 26 episodes plus the four movies so, i finished it in a week lol. once you watch it you can read more about it and see how it influenced (and was influenced by) SO many other things you know, it's a very cool experience!

Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone (2007)
Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance (2009)
Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo (2012)
Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time (2021)
A wonderful re-telling of the Evangelion story in four amazing films! I watched the first two again over the weekend and am reminded as to why this is the ultimate anime. I watched them in English and now might rewatch them again in the original Japanese language. Yep, that’s how obsessed I am.
