Joining a discord dedicated to hating on terrible booktok books was one of the best and worst decisions I've made (but I keep the Casey McQuiston channel muted cause I could never hate them, idc). "New Turkey" Introductory Reader

I did so much research for my paper that the final product barely scratched the surface of what I've read or looked up in the course of writing it. As such, I feel like the scope of my paper is very basic compared to the depth of the issue. (And considering how quickly I wrote it, frankly I'm not that sure of its actual writing quality.)

My research topic was current Turkish politics, centering on recent policies of President Erdogan and his party, the AKP, who have dominated the country since the mid-2000s. In particular I wanted to look into the roots of, and meaning behind a sort of party motto/discourse/policy umbrella which started in 2014 when Erdogan became president and announced the arrival of a "New Turkey."

This motto has frequently been compared to "Make America Great Again," and is just as bold and lacking in specific meaning. It is also the mission statement behind much of what's happening in Turkey's social and political climate right now, so for anyone interested in what's been going on in Turkey in the recent past, or curious about where the country's current direction is leading, the "New Turkey" idea is central to everything.

Rather than just delete all my references I thought I would share them here for anyone who's interested. Consider this a bit of "New Turkey" intro. It includes most of what I used in my bibliography and some other sources I looked at but didn't get to include.

I'm including some newspaper articles here-- these are all very introductory-- they're helpful for people with no background at all on Turkey, as well as for anyone who's interested and doesn't want to go through an entire paper's worth of books and articles. All these should be accessible for most people, I think.

I was going to take before and after pictures of the dinner I made (bc I finally had time to cook again 🙌) but I was filled with so much euphoria when I finished cooking my taco filling and frying my tortillas that I completely forgot to take the after picture 😂 You’ll just have to trust that it was good

I’m thinking about adding green pepper next time because it’s a little bit heavy) #oh! and drain most of the fat before adding the beans. and remove any remaining once the beans are cooked #it would probably be good with ground turkey in place of beef

I love season 9 for how real it is in its portrayal of everyday tragedies and it is very much so the case with Joan's ending too. Her ending is bittersweet because on one hand, Strange adores her and he *is* the best person she could have married (just to be clear--a far better match for her than Morse). But on the other hand, for Joan, marrying him is if not accepting defeat then certainly accepting a reasoned compromise against the societal pressures she fought so hard against for so long.

Her job means the world to her and yet we don't see or hear any mention of it in s9. She'd said she didn't want to end up in her parents' marriage with a two up two down and a pram in the hall and yet that is the house in Kidlington, where they are moving to because of her copper fiancé's job with her full blessing.

And the tragedy of it is that if there is one person who would listen to her hesitations and do his best to understand and accommodate, it's Strange. But. He is a excellent prospect for her in how kind and loving and stable he is, and there is a limit to these things you know? The society has roles for a wife and a husband and as a woman of that era you have to be very careful in the battles you choose -- if you push too much you can very quickly realise that you found and crossed the line with no way back. And so she doesn't trust him enough to be honest with him--or to ask for anything for herself. It's just a little sad in just how real it is.
