So I saw a post from @auransmoltenhair (about Fitzmama’s design, fun read 10/10 would recommend) and I just noticed that she’s holding something in her hand. It looks like a key or a random object at first, but looking closer, it’s a baby bird and then I connected the dots and ITS HAMUEL (no “ifs”, “ands”, or “buts”, I confirming it).
MAMAFITHERBERT LITERALLY SAVED HAMUEL AS A BABY MY GOODNESS
That’s too sweet-
This really solidifies that she’s a really gentle and caring person, having her and Rapunzel interact would be something to watch. And thennn thinking about how she and would be with Edmund and she would love Eugene unconditionally

When I was cleaning out my drive, I stumbled across this old sketch of Eugene’s mom and a gothic-looking Hamuel, so I thought, why not finish it?
I’ve definitely improved since, and had a lot of refining to do, but they’re finally finished! I decided to do a flatter, simpler style than what I had attempted with my Edmund drawing, because I think it looks more fitting with the cartoonier proportions and all.
And like...IT’S FITZMOM!
(Wow! Hamuel doesn’t look like Edgar Allan Poe anymore!)

PUT SOME RESPECT ON LUNA/ELEANOR/VICTORIA/ELANIA FITZHERBERT’S NAME!!1!
Image 1 Description: Eugene’s mother holding his face saying “You’re doing just fine, Eugene”
Image 2 Description: Eugene standing on the right side of his mother looking over her shoulder at a wanted poster of him. Eugene’s mother is saying “So Corona is the most powerful orbit out of the seven kingdoms and they can’t even draw my son’s nose right? Now they’re just being mean...” Followed by Eugene saying “That’s what I’m saying!”

Stop Calling Him 'Horace'! - A Dark Queen & Edmund Story Chapter 2: Child of the Moonstone Current word count: 3440 Rated T I can't exactly explain why, but I always agonize over new material when is released for this fandom. Multiple reasons. I had begun to see several spoilers crop up on Tumblr today (May 12 2021) regarding the upcoming novel about the supposed origin story of Flynn Rider.
So far, I have only actually read ONE (the very first) spoiler-filled excerpt. No worries, I will not spoil my readers. I'll just say that I see some fun things that I do like but a whole lot that frustrates me....and all within one mere excerpt.
As such, I can promise that this fic will almost certainly not be canonically compliant with this upcoming novel.....especially given the fact that I started writing it over a year ago. (As evidenced by published dates.)
I've had most of this 2nd chapter written since perhaps 30-40 days after the first chapter was posted over a year ago....I just couldn't ever polish it to a degree that I liked it and the spoilers I read helped to solidify a lot of my own headcanon vs Disney canon vs fanon. General Story refresher: King Edmund had always assumed his late wife Queen Alexys had come around to accept the fact that he was going to name their son "Horace". While they had fought on it quite a lot, to Edmund's surprise, Alexys had dropped the subject entirely once their son was born. Not long after that....the unfortunate incident with the Moonstone happened and Alexys was killed.
It would take an inordinate amount of stubbornness, an unusual series of events, and interminable amount of time before Edmund would finally discover his wife's secrets about their child and how, even without present-day Eugene's admonitions, Edmund had always mistakenly used the name "Horace" when addressing their son. Chapter 2 Summary: Queen Alexys is consumed with visions. King Edmund is consumed with.....what, exactly?? With next-to-nobody to discuss her visions, Alexys writes and journalizes everything that she can, with the intent to discuss it all with Edmund once he becomes himself again. The Queen, prompted by both hunger to learn and divine anything of value in her visions and a desperation to get through to her ever-fracturing husband, pours her heart out within several epistles. After a particularly jarring dream, it seems that her cherished newborn has finally decided to try joining them in the real world!
Chapter Two: Child of the Moonstone
Queen Alexys had had that same vivid dream several nights in succession, sometimes more than once per night, and always with little variants each time. As a result, she began cataloguing everything in her diary.
One time, Alexys continued the first conversation with her little boy, regarding the baby girl.
“And…..is she a friend of the King?” She wished to know so much more about this baby girl, but not knowing quite how to ask. The little boy nodded rapidly. “And friend of the Kingdom?” More toddler nodding. “And me?” The little boy seemed genuinely stymied by this question. It was the only thing she’d asked about so far for which he didn’t have an instant answer. He finally settled upon saying, “She does….love you a lot too, mama.” For the first time, he seemed a little bit...sad? Why did he appear to show confusion upon her question about she, herself, being friends with the mystery child too?
Hmm...Alexys thought…..this is such a conundrum! Supposedly this baby sunshine girl wasn’t her friend but loved her anyway…..oy. Divining toddler speech was proving to be particularly difficult. Especially when it’s coming from your own knackered preggy-brained mind, thought Lexy with some frustration.
Within this dream, Lexy couldn’t help emitting a lengthy dramatic sigh. She suddenly noticed the little boy was copying her motions and the way she had just sighed. She laughed in spite of herself. He laughed with her. Little angel, she thought, and not for the first time. His lips were so red, his cheeks so rosy pink, and his eyelashes so long that he almost resembled a life-sized doll.
“So….what is your name?” Alexys suddenly asked the boy, wishing to settle the outside argument with Edmund once and for all.
“Name?” he echoed.
“Erm….yes, Little One. What do people call you?” Lexy continued.
“I am….the Child of the Moonstone,” he answered solemnly. His sweet exuberance had been quelled almost instantly. It was the longest sentence she’d ever heard him say, and it was with a weariness no toddler should possess. The babygirl squeals of laughter had quieted entirely with his declaration. In fact, Alexys could’ve sworn she could physically feel emotional pain roiling off her small child. As he mentioned his connection with the Moonstone, all the light and joy hadn’t merely seeped out of her son’s face….it was seeping out of Lexy’s very dream…..until even the sun itself had begun to dim. Although the stark change in their environment shocked her….she nonetheless felt compelled to continue the conversation with her son.
“And does….does the Moonstone make you sad?” Alexys carefully asked him. She had always fretted that the gloomy Dark Palace was no place to raise a child.
The boy nodded, his limpid dark eyes filling with tears. “So lonely,” he said, cautiously approaching Alexys. “But with our Sunshine, we don't hafta be lonely again.” He reached out to touch the ethereal baby girl’s button nose and gave her a toddler “kiss” on the forehead in the form of nosy-nuzzles. Sunshine Baby herself was again babbling and laughing. Lexy’s heart nearly filled to bursting when her little dream boy looked up at her once more, smiling beneath his tears, the child-like wonder restored within his expressive eyes. And just like that, all the light and happiness was restored within her dream. Please, don’t ever be sad like that ever again! Ever!!! Alexys willed her vision, almost hyperventilating with emotion. Exactly who is this child of light that makes my son so happy??
“Who are you, Baby Sun Drop?” Alexys asked the glittering image within her arms. “Why does she make you so happy, Little One?” she asked of her boy. For the first time, she allowed herself to physically reach out to her vision-son. As her hand made contact with his cherubic rosy cheek, he leaned into her touch, causing Lexy’s heart to warm with happy tingles once more.
“Before her, everything went dark. It’s ‘cos I lose you, Mama,” her boy explained softly. Lexy held her breath without realizing….not sure if she should just let him speak or encourage him with more questions. She never wanted him to lose her!! Whatever did he mean by that?? It was quite difficult to interpret his meanings, due in large part to the way he constantly mixed verb tenses and timelines. Then he continued, “I lose all, all of everything...my home, my mama, my daddy…. even my own name. So things are even darker for awhile.” Scant though his details were, Alexys’s natural instinct was to protect him, somehow shield him from the very words that her boy was speaking. So she raised her right arm -- the one not cradling the ethereal child -- and invited her son into her one-armed embrace. The sweet toddler boy readily accepted and snuggled up right against her. Rather than any dream child, to her, he feels so alive and warm and….real. The mere thought that she might lose him the way he says, especially now, before she had even gotten to meet him in person….why, Alexys could scarcely bear thinking about it.
“But one day, Mama -- I do find the light again. I will find you again. Daddy, too. And it’s all because I find….my Sunshine.” He reached down and the glittery babygirl clutched his own small thumb in her tiny fist and they both giggled together.
Yet Alexys’s reaction was far more subdued. What he had just said rocked the queen to her core. Could this possibly be true? That their son eventually loses everything? Please just let this be my own overly tired mind and not an omen of the actual future! she pled fruitlessly of the Fates. Although her boy had basically said everything turns out okay, Lexy couldn’t help but fret over exactly what happens during the intervening years before he finds himself again. This vision felt far more detailed and possessed a more heavy realness than any dream or nightmare she’d yet had. And so she wrote about it. For even if Edmund had become impossible to speak with right now, she would definitely tell him later about these….visions of hers.
(0)(0)(0)(0)(0)
Suddenly, Alexys found herself within another powerful waking vision: the boy toddler who started out by her side was instantly on top of the tree again, within the span of one eye-blink. With his back toward Lexy, her boy turned around, only to fling the dazzlingly bright Drop of Sun directly at the Dark Palace. And it wasn’t merely dark….the whole structure now appeared dead, nothing lighted from within, and it was already half-destroyed by enormous black spikes.
As if in slow motion, the Sun Drop blazed a tiny comet-like path from the top of the tree and it impacted the miniature Dark Palace dead-center of the Black Crystal Canyon. The entire shrunken Palace and its surrounding environs lit up with the impact and were enveloped within a blinding nuclear whiteness that spread out in concentric rings and consumed everything it touched. Then all that had been painted with this whiteness -- all from the prime tower of the Dark Palace radiating outward to the edge of Crystal Canyon, abruptly exploded in a blue-white-hot supernova, sweeping away everything in its path.
(0)(0)(0)(0)(0)
Immediately Lexy’s eyes flew open and she sat bolt upright in bed as quickly as she could following this dream. “Edmund! Please -- wake up! We have--” but she looked over to her side and saw that the bed was empty. She was sleeping alone. Again. It was the third night that week they turned down their bedlamps together and the third night Edmund had been bothered enough to quietly get up and abandon her in their bed chamber. Just what was it that kept eating away at her husband so much that it was now robbing him of sleep? Alexys had a feeling she may already know the answer and fervently wished she could lend just a little bit of her own family’s natural resistance to the Moonstone’s effects to her husband. Maybe then he would stop spending so much time alone in the orb’s cavern, obsessing over how he could possibly destroy it once and for all. Yet before she could swing both legs over the edge of the bed, Alexys had flung open the comforter and saw that everything surrounding her from the hips down was soaked in warm liquid. Alexys coached herself not to panic; she had been preparing herself for this for months now, after all. When the queen tried to push herself off the bed, however, she was instantly seized with dazzling blue-white lightning pain that shot out across her lower back and bisected her pelvis up the center, cut down her legs and to her knees, causing her to scream mightily at the top of her lungs. "Screw not panicking!!", she half-cried, half-yelled to herself. "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDMMMUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNDDD!!! roared the lionesse, her voice ringing throughout every corridor in the dark palace.

***NOT MY ORIGINAL IDEA***
@duckydrawsart posted this beautiful comic and proposed the idea that someone else finishes it and I honestly jumped on that opportunity as fast as I could. I learned so much from coloring this and I’m so happy that there are people in the tangled fandom who ship these two as much as I do. <3
Again, original comic here.

(repost from the original chart)
By combining random screenshots, I think I can loosely say that if the Dark Queen was animated, her height would be a nearly perfect combination of Eugene and Rapunzel’s height.

My new muse lol
...or another quick rough sketch. I might actually spend time on another in the future
A little disappointed that we never got her name, but I do adore all the fandom names. After much deliberation, I have chosen the the name Gwenllian (Gwen for short)
Tag/comment your name (or at least your favorite) for the Dark Queen! I’d love to see them!

Do we ever get a reason why fitzmama and Varian's mom never got a name?
An "official" reason? Not to my knowledge. I believe it's simply that they weren't important enough to the story for them to warrant it (even though that's ridiculously bogus).

Headcanons from Eugene P.I. and basically everything else.
(I’m a Eugene Roleplayer (....shush I still am D: ) so these are Eugene-centric headcanons.)
So I pretty much keep thinking about this episode. I keep getting some ideas about headcanons.
New Headcanons: It’s inevitable I’ll get new ones. Some have circulated on their own, others have been more cemented while chatting with @runningracingdancingchasing.
Boots - The only job he seemed to have a knack for was cobbling. My theory here is while he had a few pieces of quality clothing, he only had THOSE pieces for a long time. Specifically the doublet and boots. Both are worn in the movie but well taken care of. (I also believe he’s had that satchel forever.) My theory is in the beginning he had to spend a bit more than he’d like having the boots repaired until he realized he could just learn how to do it himself. (In fact, that’s probably why he stole the crate of boots to begin with. He wasn’t going to practice on his own boots!)
Cassandra - I think this dynamic is part jealousy and dislike. Probably on both ends. Cassandra’s father would have spent the better part of Cassandra’s childhood chasing Eugene around. At least her teen years. She is probably equal parts jealous of the times he took her father away and dislike because he's Flynn Rider. Equally, I think Eugene would be jealous of Cassandra for the attachment Rapunzel has to her. And he dislikes her because, well, she dislikes him so obviously she's wrong about everything. (Except Rapunzel. They both agree on her.) I was really pleased with her actions and reactions in Eugene P.I. and the advice she gave.
School - I know he said he went to school for three days, but I tend to think of it more like 'ug summer break only lasted a week what happened.' I think he loved school, he just wasn't able to go nearly as often as he would have liked.
Genius - It comes across as a throw away and silly line and it probably is. However I keep thinking it's something more. Imagine you're 'poor orphan Eugene' and, well, the guy's smart. He was most likely smart as a kid. Very smart. Sometimes probably more so than the adults around him. People don't usually like to be told they're dumb, even if it's indirectly and accidentally. He probably got called 'genius' a lot while another kid or someone knocked some 'sense' into him…
Thieving - For some reason it's gotten into my head that he became a thief because that's what he's been told that's all he'll ever be good for in life. But! He took his own Eugene spin on it. "What are you talking about? I won't be a no good rotten thief. I will be the best thief this country has ever seen!" I also think his first attempt at stealing, because that's what he's been told he'll be, was of a widow with like...five kids. And he felt so bad he returned her coin purse crying even though he knew his confession could lead to the headmaster of the orphanage boxing his ears and sending him to bed without supper for the next week. (And that's why he moved on from Petty Theft to Grand Larceny 8D Less harm to the Little People!)
Proven Headcanons: Because I had some that were right!
Teaching - He’s teaching the guards how to outsmart a thief. Though I believed he would be a sort of guard for this, this is so darn close I basically screamed in delight.
Intelligent - He speaks like five thousand languages. It’s not even episode five yet and I’ve already had to look up one word he said only because I wasn’t 100% sure on it and my vocabulary isn’t tiny. One thing I learning in Fitzherbert P.I. is that the guards aren’t stupid. He’s just smart.
I Was WRONG!: How can this be?!
Froo Froo Collars - Man, I was SO convinced he would hate those things. But noooOOoooo. He just HAD to wear one. IN THE MOVIE! WHY! Eugene! They’re...WHY! (Actually he didn't look bad in it, I'm just salty he wore one and proved me wrong xD)
Hiding A Lot - I was pretty sure he’d hide in the rafters but nope he’s enjoying the opulent life. (Though really, can you blame him?)
All The Guards Don't Hate Him - I'm actually glad about this one! I keep wondering about Stan. How did they get so close? Was it all within the time since Rapunzel's return, or did the infamous Flynn Rider save a young Stan while the over-eager green behind the ears cadet decided to Go Big or Go Home? And did this give Stan an opening to catch said Flynn Rider but let him go because of this rescue? INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!
King and Queen Role Reversal - I knew one would be far less trusting or accepting of Eugene as the other. However, I'd felt it would be the Queen who made it clear she couldn't trust him as far as she could throw him. So far Arianna seems more accepting of him than Frederic.
Headcanons That Won’t Be Proven or Disproven: Because, you know, Tangled BEA has a Y-7 rating...
Basically anything involving alcohol and up in the rating scale of things. (Shhhh Disney characters smooch and hold hands that’s all!)
Comfort Sleep - This one mostly fits here because of how it can be construed. I believe that Eugene sleeps best next to Rapunzel. Even if there is a literal wall of pillows between them (with a hole somewhere so he can sneak his hand over for a chaste handhold in their sleep) of a dozy summer afternoon in a field somewhere.
Headcanons I’m Waiting On: Because some of these are life.
‘Oh Mah Word How Untoward!’ - Yes. I still firmly believe that in a select few instances Eugene is a true Southern Belle. Even if he doesn’t do it literally, in some circumstances he will figuratively flutter that fan in front of his face. He may be able to hold his own against The Snuggly Duckling gang when it comes to...um...you know...cupcakes and not alcohol haha...but if one of them even acts curious on how many times he’s smooched the Princess on the cheek? Goodness me oh my!
Pie - Oh my gosh even if it's shown that pie isn’t his favorite dessert of all time, if there’s ever even a scene of him holding a pie and gazing at it lovingly I would figuratively die of literal happiness.
Coffee - Black. Actually, any form of coffee would be amazing. Eugene may be a nightowl according to my brain. (Oh hey! Another one!) I'm waiting for a scene where he's
Eugene The Nightowl - He’s a thief, right? I legit think Eugene is a nightowl. Maybe not by nature but by necessity. It would be amazing if this is brought up in some form even if it’s to prove my headcanon wrong. Like, if he says, ‘Man, I won’t miss the late nights of being a thief!’ I’d be okay with that!
Parentage - Is the Fitz part of Fitzherbert a clue on who his dad is? (Or was if I’m wrong.) Was his dad actually loving? Either way, please let Fitzmama have been amazing!
Continued Education - I personally think Eugene would try to learn as much as he can now that he pretty much has unlimited resources. Heck, he may be doing that now. I keep picturing him crashing Rapunzel's lessons under the guise of being bored only to really be there to learn about the kingdom's cabbage taxation policies.
Bromance - Usually this is reserved for the boys only but Eugene is pretty much all for women's rights. (Hello, his girlfriend could probably bench press him and she has tiny noodle arms and he's not bothered by that.) But I legit want to see Eugene and Cassandra slowly and organically forming a sort of bromance together. (Even if it's a bit on the 'rushed' side, as long as it makes sense! :D Which I think the writers and everyone of this show would do even something like that pretty well. And we're not even five episodes in and I have this opinion!) Eugene P.I. has planted seeds for if not this exactly then at the very least a mutual understanding in the nearish future.
I think that's it for now.
I got to say, there aren't a lot of cartoon series I've been seriously invested in. In recent years the HTTYD series comes close, but not enough for my brain to go on like this. The most recent for me has been the Avatar series and before that it was Kim Possible.

Canon hasn’t denied it, so I’m going to say that Edmund’s ravens originally belonged to his wife (she was holding one in the royal portrait, after all!).
This is a very lazy sketch but I wanted to draw Fitzmama and Hamuel :).
I mean, Hamuel looks like Edgar Allen Poe, but it was my first attempt so...

A Eugene and Dark Queen Reunion - Eugene Appreciation Week | Day 3 - Angst
Meanwhile, back in Gothel’s tower..... Rapunzel was desperately trying the healing incantation even though her magical hair was now gone. But Eugene couldn’t allow her the chance. Already too much had been taken from Rapunzel during her life and he wasn’t going to take any more from her. Not even to save himself….especially not to save himself. Eugene summoned his last tiny bit of strength with Herculean effort. “Rapunzel,” he insisted, pulling her face to him. He had to tell her. “What?” she whispered at last. The effort cost him dearly, left him gasping. “You were my new dream,” he breathed, as Rapunzel laughed through her tears with bittersweet joy. Whatever the price, it was worth it to Eugene just so he could hear the sound along with her next words. “And you were mine,” she replied with loving sorrow, fervently wishing she could just hold Eugene here in this moment with her forever. At least…..at least she could put a smile on his face before he slipped away for good. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Eugene was swiftly awoken and bidden to stand by a mysterious brunette with long flowing hair. She quietly stood next to him, dressed in an elegant white gown, and looked up at him serenely. He briefly wondered if she were an angel before reminding himself he didn’t believe in such nonsense.
He couldn't really pay much attention to her at first....as upon standing, he had turned around and was jolted by what he saw. Eugene’s gaze was instantly glued to the scene playing out before him. It turned out he was still in the tower. Rapunzel, now clearly resigned, despondently finished the healing chant he had so stoutly refused her and wept openly over his dead body.
"Oh no....." Eugene fell to his incorporeal knees in anguish. “No!” Eugene had thought dying would be the saddest thing to happen to him. Yet he’d been sorely mistaken. "Rapunzel, I...."
"She can't hear you, son," the brunette said softly. She came up behind him and put a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "I can promise you, however, she will not be sad for much longer." At the moment, Eugene felt anything but reassured.
"Who....who are you?" demanded Eugene of this...this interloper, in spite of himself. For the moment, he just wished to be alone with Rapunzel and their shared grief. The mystery woman seemed to have sensed Eugene’s reluctance to her presence and carefully moved away a few paces. She now stood opposite him on the other side of Rapunzel as she cradled Eugene's body.
"Well, I did call you 'son' for a reason, you know," said the woman, with an impish twinkle in her eye.  "Wuh--" Eugene nearly choked on his own tongue as he stood up in a rush, trying to get the words out, finally settling upon, "--Mother?" He gaped at her, openly searching for any signs of his own features within hers.
"That is one of my many titles, yes," replied the regal lady, smiling enigmatically in front of him, “and my personal favorite.” All at once he noticed she was wearing a black tiara with purple jewels. It seemed all the more stark against her crisp white dress. Eugene’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. "Alas, there is no time to discuss them all, though. You need to go very soon."
"What?" Eugene protested. "Go? But didn't I just get here? Wherever here is? How can it be that I already have to leave again?" "Observe," said his mother, gesturing to his prone self on the floor. A tiny starburst of golden sparks showered his cheek where Rapunzel's solitary tear had fallen, only to travel further down toward the mortal wound in Eugene's side. As they watched, the garish gash began mending itself closed amidst a thunderclap of bright spiraling magical tendrils that grew to encompass the entire tower. "What is happening?" Eugene cried over the thunderous roar of healing magic, shielding his vision against its brightness. "I should think that much would be obvious," his mother replied with what was now characteristic vagueness, once again wearing her Mona Lisa smile. Eugene groaned in exasperation and he found himself getting mildly annoyed with her cryptic amusement. It even reminded the young man a little bit of....himself. So that's where I get it! he marveled as realization dawned. "This time, the Sun Drop chose you, Eugene," his mother was looking him right in the eye now. "Chose me?" Eugene echoed skeptically, his eyebrows knitting together. "Why ever would it choose me? It's Rapunzel who's into this whole 'destiny' business." His mother laughed throatily and it mesmerized him; he was completely enchanted by the sight and sound. "Come here, Gene." He was utterly taken by her use of his diminutive name as he walked around to meet her. He almost couldn't ask. It seemed too surreal. An orphan wouldn't dare to hope....but he gestured to her tiara. "Are you...." She slipped an arm sideways around his waist, pulling her to him. He couldn’t help but notice how tall she was as she replied, "Yes, I was royalty when I was alive, which means you have royal blood too. And as long as you keep putting your faith in and keep choosing this young woman, you will find all of the answers you've sought about your family -- past, present, and future. And sooner rather than much later. However, I fear right now it’s time we take our leave of one another." "Now?? But--but I have so many questions!" Eugene pleaded. His mother put a quieting finger to his lips and patiently said, "In due time, dear son of mine. The only thing I want you to have on your mind during this present time is you….and her.” She reached up and lightly tapped his forehead three times and bade him into her loving embrace. Still somewhat unsure of her, he accepted, eventually melting into her arms as she stroked the back of his hair. She hummed an old German lullaby, the same way a young mother would soothe her small child. Hot tears sprang to Eugene’s eyes, completely unbidden. Just how could this song sound so familiar?? his mind cast-about wildly. He was both amazed and bewildered, yet he felt far too overwhelmed to speak.
Eugene felt himself fade out into soft white nothingness while in his mother's warm embrace. Then before he knew it, Eugene’s eyes were fluttering open again, as if he'd briefly fallen asleep and taken an unintentional nap somewhere. Immediately, his mind filled with thoughts of….
"Rapunzel?" he said breathlessly. Back! He really was back within his own body! Mentally, Eugene checked himself over.....he could breathe easily again. No more aching stab wound in his side. He remembered passing out…. Somehow Rapunzel had actually done it!! “Eugene??” gasped Rapunzel hopefully above him. Her hands reflexively held him closer. The way she whispered his name sounded like a little prayer. His eyesight was gradually returning, as he blinked and saw the blurry figure above him coalesce into his newest dream.
"Have I ever told you that I've got a thing for brunettes?" he kidded breathlessly, to let his love know that he was indeed all there for real.
"EUGENE!!" cried Rapunzel in exultation, throwing her arms so joyously about his neck that she nearly pulled him back to the floor with her. He caught her in a one-armed embrace, holding her as tightly to him as he dared. Never before had such a remarkable woman loved him so fiercely. Eugene had scarcely dreamt it was possible. A lilting voice filled his mind, But if something's not impossible, it's not worth doing... he dismissed it as his own fleeting thoughts playing tricks on him....until the same lilting voice confirmed outright his next thoughts: Yes, you really are just that lucky to have Rapunzel. And yes -- you will remember our little meeting here when the time is right.
Then Rapunzel grasped the sides of Eugene’s doublet in both of her fists and literally took his breath away with the ferocity of their first kiss. Eugene enthusiastically responded in kind. And although Eugene never completely forgot his memories of the very brief encounter with his mother, in light of recent pressing events, those memories completely faded to the back of Eugene’s mind as if it were a dream. For the greater part of two years, he was pretty certain he had hallucinated them anyway. That is, until this very moment.....
Tumblr media
When after he sees this portrait....
Tumblr media
And a light of familiarity appears to dawn in his eyes.
Tumblr media
It has always been my theory (well, I s’pose it’s wish fulfillment now -- since all the series episodes have been broadcast) that even all of Eugene’s old wanted posters wouldn’t have been enough to convince him to turn away from Rapunzel. It had to be something more....something huge. If Eugene had a visual confirmation of who his mother is prior to seeing this portrait because he’d recently already seen her during the 1-minute-40-second interval that he was dead in the tower.....then I postulate that this is why Eugene was convinced to go against Rapunzel, if even for a few hours.

Here’s my Mothers’ Day contribution. I’ve had this headcanon for a while that the ghost of Eugene’s mother takes care of the ghost of Pascal’s mother (because we know that ghosts exist in this world). Ever since the moment in “Destinies Collide” when Eugene told Pascal that his mother died (and Pascal could relate to his feelings, since his mother also died) I’ve thought about how both of their moms had to be taken away from their babies, who both got to know each other and be close friends. Maybe their moms can be friends too! Just an idea.
