I'm high and extremely emotional about Livinia Falcone (Penance) being the such a great complement and contrast to Margaret Nearl. It's like... so apparent. It had to be intentional or it's just a genius coincidence. This'll be long because I ramble, but please bear with me.
Like, first off,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, you have the obvious white-black contrast in their outfits. You also have the contrast in their weapons, a nimble swordspear and a heavy hammer OF JUSTICE (and it might be cheating to mention that Nearl has long hair and Penance has short hair) (EDIT: I forgot her braid sorry), but then, then! You have the compliments! The glowing dagger in Nearl's hand, the codex in Penance's.
You also have like, the way their backstories complement each other in certain ways. Nearl was a competition knight, a hero to the masses and a symbol of safety and hope that was ultimately controlled by the interests of the bureaucracy. She was forced to leave her hometown, and live in the wilderness. Penance, on the other hand, is a judge. An enforcer of the law that supposedly keeps the people safe but was actually in the pocket of the Bellone famiglie. Despite doing everything she could, to believe in justice and try to uphold the law, she was shackled by her limitations especially to mafia affairs, even if she wasnt as tightly leashed by the Bellones and allowed to give guilty sentences sometimes. Both women were basically pawns to the powers that be in their countries, and it was an open secret that they weren't much more than that.
Where they differ is their outlook. Nearl's family motto, "Fear neither hardship nor darkness" lives through Margaret most visibly. She says it often, and she exemplifies what a platonic ideal of a knight would act like. She's noble, courageous, kind, she fights for what's right. She is uncompromising in her values but not close minded. It's beautiful and inspiring to see.
Penance is not so lucky. She's disillusioned. She has hope but it's faint and tricky. By the end of Il Siracusano she's ready to leave Siracusa behind and try to atone for her past inadequacy (hence her Operator name). She is a woman with honor that had to be compromised. She drinks, and apparently to blackout sometimes. Her codex, the toke of law she values so much, is literally bound in thorny vines and can in fact prick her. She's an idealist who had those ideals challenged, and while she didn't break, she did bend, and she has yet to recover.
Penance is the Tarnished Knight; a weapon of justice that was misused and as a result her faith in justice shaken, the hope that Don Bellone gave her in his final act a tenuous one and one that fosters complicated emotions. She fights for what's right, what's truly right this time, but she may never feel like she's cleansed herself of her previous wrongs. She fights for what she hopes is the right thing, for something to believe in. It's a realistic goal. She is beautifully tragic in that sense.
Nearl is the Radiant Knight; a symbol of hope that was discarded by her country and as a result found firm footing in her faith in the wilderness. She fights for what's right, affirmed in her beliefs by the Followers, by Rhodes Island. She fights for a better tomorrow, a very idealistic and optimistic outlook. It makes her all the more impossibly dazzling.

When a home like this historic example of American colonial style is so well-preserved, I can’t resist- it’s like living in a museum. Built in 1825 in Foster, Rhode Island, this 3bd. 1/5ba. home is listed for $475K.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at this- it’s just like a museum house. It also helps that they have some amazing antique pieces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dining room has the original hearth, closet door, oven, and there are wide plank floors throughout the house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a wonderful kitchen. It’s so great to see that everything was preserved and they modernized beautifully around it.  I love the fireplace and red cabinetry. Look at the beamed ceilings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the back of the house is a cozy family room in a 4 season porch.
Tumblr media
The hall is so original- notice the hardware on the door.
Tumblr media
The spacious main bd. even has a cute little window seat that doubles as a chest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, here’s another large bd.
Tumblr media
The added bath reflects the color and decor of the period.
Tumblr media
This room with another original fireplace is used for display, but it can be a bd., home office, whatever.
Tumblr media
This room would be another small bd.
Tumblr media
A nice big garage was added to the home.
Tumblr media
Here you can see the original house and the additions, that were skillfully done.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, the house comes with 7.18 acres of land.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, you can have horses.

FIC LIST + SUMMARIES:
TRIAL DE NOVO When his court-assigned public defender quits on his first night as an arraignment judge at Manhattan Criminal Court, Leon decides to reach out to his old foster father, Harry Stone, for advice. He finds Harry's widower, Dan Fielding, instead. ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION All things considered, Dan’s first month as a public defender in Leon’s courtroom passes relatively smoothly—until a blast from the past forces him to defend his behavior after Harry’s death. SWEETHEART DEAL Love is in the air: Leon works up the courage to ask out Rene Robinson, and Dan considers if he's ready to date again after a chance reunion with old flame Joan Hobson. CONTRIBUTORY NEGLIENCE (coming soon!) After being hit by a car while out on an early morning bagel run, the last thing Leon expects is to wake up in a world where his court clerk is a stressed out single father, his prosecutor is a perky blonde half his size, and his public defender is none other than his former foster father, Harry T. Stone. RESIDUARY LEGACY (coming soon!) After the sixth anniversary of Harry’s death, Leon joins Dan in scattering Harry’s ashes off the coast of Rhode Island. On the way, Dan reflects on his and Harry’s love story, from the beginning to the end.

Gabrielle Canon at The Guardian:
For about a week, the cluster of tents raised by students at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, stood in solidarity with Palestinian civilians in Gaza and with students protesting at other campuses across the US. Then, on Tuesday, the tents quietly vanished from the grassy quad at the heart of campus. There were no riot-gear-clad crackdowns from police and no assaults from masked groups to spur disbandment. Instead, Brown chose a different path: it negotiated. While semesters at other schools speed toward a violent close – complete with canceled classes and commencement celebrations, scenes of brutal yet unsuccessful attempts at quelling the protests, and aggression from opposing groups that has heightened already inflamed tensions – Brown is one of several universities that have sought a more amicable solution.
Northwestern University in Illinois, the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, Rutgers University at New Brunswick in New Jersey and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis have also brokered agreements with students, while others, including Wesleyan in Connecticut and the University of California at Berkeley, have allowed the protest encampments to continue. . The outcomes from these divergent approaches remain uncertain; while some of the more extreme examples of suppression have been met with public shock and condemnation, protests have persisted. At Brown, students who agreed to dismantle their demonstration in exchange for a seat at the table in an upcoming meeting with the Corporation of Brown University did so knowing that a satisfying answer to protesters’ demands for divestment is far from a guarantee.
But the movement, which erupted in response to a conflict thousands of miles away, has brought one closer to home into sharper focus. The protests in support of Gaza are testing the bounds of students’ rights to free speech and shining a spotlight on the deepening political divides over the culture on college campuses. “Students are pointing out contradictions between being asked to be free thinkers and then finding themselves challenged when they think they are thinking freely,” said Dr Manual Pastor, a professor and the director of the Equity Research Institute at the University of Southern California, whose research focuses on the power of social movements.
Schools have long grappled with this balancing act, both encouraging diverse perspectives and limiting its expression in the name of safety. But these simmering tensions have come to a boil as political divides widen.
Since the start of the protests on campus last fall, conservatives have argued they’re a symbol of how an “out-of-control left” has come to dominate US campuses. It’s an issue the GOP-led House has pursued with vigor, launching an investigation into federal funding for schools where protests have lingered, and scrutinizing presidents of some of America’s most prestigious universities whom they allege have allowed an escalation in antisemitism. That intense scrutiny, and the response of prominent university donors, has incentivized some schools to take a heavier hand, Pastor said. In December, the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard were forced to resign after a heated hearing on their actions to limit pro-Palestinian protests. The president of Columbia University, Minouche Shafik, who was called to testify in April, vowed to take a strong approach. The next day, she unleashed swarms of New York police department (NYPD) officers on student protesters. Meanwhile, tensions on campuses have only intensified. That’s why some universities have tried to use this moment as an opportunity, choosing to foster dialogues around the emotionally fraught issue rather than trying to remove it with force.
[...] As the semester draws to a close, it’s also not a sure thing the encampment will be allowed to continue. Security at the school is keeping a close watch, Mogulof said, and is ready to step in if they deem campus life is being disrupted. Other schools that first prioritized dialogue have shifted course. Dartmouth, an Ivy League university in New Hampshire, scheduled several events and discussions in recent months discussing the situation in the Middle East. But on Wednesday, soon after the first tents of a protest encampment were raised, officers from the Hanover police department cleared the site, arresting 90 people including history professor Annelise Orleck, a former chair of the school’s Jewish studies department who has taught at the school for 34 years. And, some protesters have succeeded in getting their calls answered. The Evergreen State College agreed on Tuesday to set up a task force that will map out its “divestment from companies that profit from gross human rights violations and/or the occupation of Palestinian territories”. Meanwhile, the cause aligning these protesters across the country has largely been lost in the rhetoric over whether their tactics are wrong or right. While crackdowns against student protesters feed the news cycle, updates about the carnage that continues in Gaza has been pushed to the background.
The Guardian takes a look at the campuses that are allowing Gaza Solidarity Encampments and negotiations with dialogue-- rather than heavy-handed enforcement and arrests-- as the way to tackle the role of funding Israel Apartheid, such as Brown University.

Just before 7 am on March 3, Danny Lemoi posted an update in his hugely popular pro-ivermectin Telegram group, Dirt Road Discussions: “HAPPY FRIDAY ALL YOU POISONOUS HORSE PASTE EATING SURVIVORS !!!”
Hours later, Lemoi was dead.
For the last decade, Lemoi had taken a daily dose of veterinary ivermectin, a dewormer designed to be used on large animals like horses and cows. In 2021, as ivermectin became a popular alternative COVID-19 treatment among anti-vaxxers, he launched what became one of the largest Telegram channels dedicated to promoting the use of it, including instructions on how to administer ivermectin to children.
But despite Lemoi’s death, the administrators of his channel are pushing his misinformation—even as his followers share their own worrying possible side effects from taking ivermectin and some question the safety of the drug.
Lemoi, a heavy equipment operator who lived in Foster, Rhode Island, “passed away unexpectedly” on March 3, according to an online obituary post by his family last week. He was survived by his parents and brother. The obituary gave no details about the cause of his death.
In the Telegram channel, administrators broke the news of his death to his followers. “Though it was obvious that Danny had the biggest heart, it was unbeknownst to him that his heart was quite literally overworking and overgrowing beyond its capacity, nearly doubled in size from what it should have been,” the admins wrote, adding: “We understand that this is going to raise questions for those who were following him.”
The admins added that Lemoi had undergone testing on his heart last year, but the results had shown no cause for concern.
Lemoi began taking the version of ivermectin designed for animals on a daily basis in 2012, after he was diagnosed with Lyme disease, according to a detailed account of his medical history he gave on a podcast last November. He said then that five months after first taking the drug, he quit all other treatments and believed ivermectin had “regenerated” his heart muscle.
During the pandemic, Ivermectin became hugely popular among anti-vaxxers, many of whom were taking and recommending the veterinary formulation of the drug, rather than the one designed for human use. While ivermectin for humans is used to treat serious illnesses like river blindness, it has repeatedly been shown to be an ineffective treatment for COVID-19.
And according to the Missouri Poison Center, ingesting large doses of ivermectin formulated for animals has a long list of side effects, including seizures, coma, lung issues, and heart problems. Veterinary ivermectin is not a cure or effective treatment for COVID, the FDA has repeatedly warned, and is highly concentrated because it is designed for large animals like horses and cows. “Such high doses can be highly toxic in humans,” the FDA cautions.
“Danny was fully convinced that his heart had regenerated after his incident with Lyme disease that almost ended in congestive heart failure,” the admins wrote, before claiming that “a family history of heart disease and chronic stress” were why his heart had ultimately become engorged. “All of his other organs were unremarkable,” the admins wrote. “And this was determined to be a death by unfortunate natural causes.”
The admins of Lemoi’s channel did not respond to VICE News’ questions about where they got their information about his death. Lemoi’s surviving family did not respond to VICE News' request for comment on the cause of his death.
But a review of Lemoi’s Telegram channels shows that many of his followers who are taking his dosage recommendations, or “protocols,” for veterinary ivermectin are experiencing numerous known side effects of taking the drug.
“I’m 4 months now and all hell’s breaking loose, all pain has hit my waist down with sciatic, shin splints, restless leg syndrome, tight sore calves & it feels like some pain in the bones,” a member wrote on Friday.
Lemoi explained away the negative side effects of taking veterinary ivermectin by describing them as “herxing,” a real term to describe an adverse response that occurs in people who take antibiotics as a treatment for Lyme disease.
“My wife has been taking ivermectin for 3 months,” a member wrote Friday. “She is being treated for autoimmune hepatitis, thyroid, and vertebrae issues. She has had some serious HERXING. Today she has a migraine, vomiting and severe stomach pain. Does anyone have any ideas how to help, and are these HERXING symptoms?”
Some members of the group are taking ivermectin not only as a treatment against COVID, but as a cure-all for almost every disease—from cancer and depression, to autism and ovarian cysts—believing that every disease is caused by a parasite that is removed from the body by ivermectin, just as animals are given the drug to treat parasitic worms like tapeworm.
Lemoi also formulated an ivermectin regimen for children, and numerous members of the group reported that they were using it. This week alone one member wrote that she had established another group for “parents of children on the spectrum, cerebral palsy, pans/panda, downs etc.,” who are using the Lemoi’s recommended children’s dosage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When some members of the group blamed Lemoi’s death on ivermectin, they were criticized in the Telegram channel; their fellow group members claimed they were spreading misinformation.
“No one can convince me that he died because of ivermectin,” one member wrote this week. “He ultimately died because of our failed western medicine which only cares about profits and not the cure.”
Despite Lemoi’s death, administrators said this week the Telegram channel would live on, and the group is attracting new members who continue to take ivermectin despite suffering serious side effects.
“I am very new to this... I’ve been on Bimectin paste for 20 days,” one new member wrote on Friday morning, explaining that he too was suffering from Lyme disease. “I have severe chest pain. Costochondritis symptoms. Air hunger, internal tremors, brain fog, headaches on the back of my head, anxiety, depression, doom and gloominess.”
Oh...just remembering all the MAGA freaks on here that were foaming at the mouth over ivermectin and wondering why @staff never gave us a "report medical misinformation" option...

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man accused of faking his death and fleeing the U.S. to avoid rape charges in Utah denied at a court appearance Tuesday that he is the suspect and, in an apparent British accent, called allegations that he wasn't giving his true name “complete hearsay."
Nicholas Rossi, whose legal name is Nicholas Alahverdian, is charged with the rape of a 21-year-old woman in Orem, Utah, in 2008, prosecutors said. He wasn't identified as a suspect until about a decade later due to a backlog of DNA test kits at the Utah State Crime Lab.
Rossi, 36, was extradited from Scotland earlier this month. He identified himself Tuesday as Arthur Knight Brown and gave a birthdate in British English — listing the day first, followed by the month and year — that is different from Rossi's, KSTU-TV reported.
He appeared from jail via video wearing an oxygen mask and did not enter a plea at the initial court appearance. He was difficult to understand at times and had to lift up the mask to be heard.
Deputy Salt Lake County attorney Tamara Basuez said Rossi has not admitted his name or birthdate since he returned to Utah.
“Objection, my lady, that is complete hearsay,” Rossi told the judge.
Rossi is jailed without the possibility of posting bail in the Orem case. The judge set a detention hearing for Jan. 26.
Tumblr media
The judge said a lawyer would be appointed for Rossi. He said he has one, but that the attorney did not receive notice of Tuesday's hearing.
Rossi, who grew up in foster homes in Rhode Island, made a name for himself there as a vocal critic of the state’s Department of Children, Youth and Families.
Four years ago, he told media in Rhode Island that he had late-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma and had weeks to live. An obituary published online claimed he died Feb. 29, 2020.
He used at least 10 different aliases over the years, prosecutors said.
Authorities said his run from the law ended when he was arrested in December 2021 after being recognized by someone at a Glasgow, Scotland, hospital while he was being treated for COVID-19. He insisted he was an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight and had never set foot on American soil.
The man had said he was framed by authorities who took his fingerprints while he was in a coma so they could connect him to Rossi. He has repeatedly appeared in court in a wheelchair, using an oxygen mask and speaking with the apparent British accent.
After a protracted court battle, Judge Norman McFadyen of Edinburgh Sheriff Court ruled in August that the extradition could move forward. The judge called Rossi “as dishonest and deceitful as he is evasive and manipulative.”

I heard they’re a part of a BAND called IMMY, yeah they’re a BASSIST. to be honest they sound a lot like BEABADOOBEE, REMI WOLF AND CAT AND CALMELL. they’re actually A RISING STAR.
trigger warnings found: child abandonment/neglect, addiction, death and overdose.
𝙱𝙰𝚂𝙸𝙲𝚂
FULL NAME:  Josephine Azalea Turner
NICKNAMES: Josie, Jo
BIRTHDATE: July 20, 1995
AGE: 28
ZODIAC: Cancer sun ☀️, Libra moon 🌙, Aries rising ⬆️
BIRTHPLACE: Providence, Rhode Island
SEXUAL ORIENTATION: homoromantic homosexual
GENDER & PRONOUNS: cis woman, she/her
OCCUPATION: bassist for IMMY's band, artist
𝙱𝙸𝙾𝙶𝚁𝙰𝙿𝙷𝚈
Josephine was born on a sunny morning of July 1995 in Providence, Rhode Island. Her parents were freshly out of high school, and had a pretty complicated/toxic relationship. (tw addiction and child abandonment/neglect mention) They were also addicts, who usually neglected little Josie in favor of their vices. That was… until one night where they preferred them and decided it was best to leave their kid behind to start the hedonistic careless lifestyle they always dreamt of together. They drove down, then made a stop in New Haven, Connecticut to tell Josie to wait for them in a bench at a church downtown, to never be seen again. When Josie was found, she was too small to explain what had really happened. All she could babble was ‘mamma’ and ‘pappa’ as she looked around without luck. It was clear to locals that the poor child had been left for her luck there, so she was immediately placed into foster care. Josie moved around a lot in different foster homes, yet never found a family to call her own. All she's ever known is the fact that she's on her own. Growing up, Josie was a pretty quiet kid, she didn’t have many friends at school or at the foster care. She found solace in her drawings and the music blasting on her headphones. She always carried a little notebook around to sketch whenever inspiration hit her: that was her first real love, the arts. She loved to draw, paint, sketch, you name it... it was her escape. When turning 18, right after graduating high school, it was now time for Josie to leave foster care. She was now on a mission to survive out there in the real world. Deciding to do a full 180 and try new things and step out of her comfort zone, she moved to Los Angeles to start a new life in the west coast. While looking for a job in the city, she met an old lady kind enough to let her work at her house, and stay with her too. Her name was Alyssa Turner. It was in L.A that Josie broke out of her shell and for the first time in her life, connected with people with the same passion as her: art. These new artsy friends were the ones who allowed her to truly explore her other biggest love: music. They wanted to start a band and needed a bassist, so that's how Josie ended up learning. She fell in love with it so much that she eventually learned guitar and drums too. The band didn't last long, but it was the thing that made her discover she wanted to keep on doing music for the rest of her life. Josephine worked for, and lived with Mrs. Alyssa until she turned 21. Having saved enough to find a place of her own, and thinking that was the perfect age to begin her real independence. Mrs. Alyssa became the only family she’s even known (tw death mention) up until her passing in late 2021. It was thanks to her that Josie got her last name, never having one before. At 19 she legally changed her name to Josephine Azalea Turner. “Azalea” was the middle name Mrs. Alyssa picked for her. She was an avid nature fan who owned a big garden, and that was her favorite flower type. And Turner, of course, after the woman who sheltered and loved her unconditionally, never asking for anything in return. It was at 21 that she discovered she could actually make a living out of music too, which is when she started to take it all more seriously. First as a session musician, then a touring member... till her biggest opportunity to date came to her in 2020: joining IMMY's band as a bass player, it was a no brainer and that's what she's been primarly doing since, having found her new family there.
𝙷𝙴𝙰𝙳𝙲𝙰𝙽𝙾𝙽𝚂
Josie never stopped making art, at this point she's established herself as a respected artist in the west coast, and of course her growing following after joining IMMY's band helped her gain exposure. She mainly paints and sometimes holds exhibitions in the city. You can definitely find her at Urban Artistry Studio often. She also works on IMMY's art for her socials, merch or artwork!!!
(tw overdose mention) She's unaware of this (yet), but her biological mother tragically passed away due to an overdose when Josie was only 5, causing her father to decide to get clean... he got married a few years later and Josie has two younger siblings (possible wc i end up sending to the main!)
She's a cancer so she feels... A Lot. She's constantly in her own lil world crafting new ideas for paintings or melodies for songs (she really values her alone time). Yet she can also be incredibly impulsive and easily get into trouble (that Aries rising sigh).
Too gay to function™ . Has a crush on every pretty girl she sees (can u blame her tho??). Also a hopeless romantic (oh, that Libra moon...), can't hook up with anyone without falling in love... I'm sorry, I don't make the rules.
A regular at PRISM club... has performed DJ sets there for the funsies.
Definitely an astrology girlie.
Went to community college to get a degree in visual arts.
Josie's never been about fame, she performs music because that's her passion... it's always overwhelming (in the best way) if she ever gets recognized down the street, and she really appreciates it every time!!
Umm yeah I named her Josie after the blink-182 song and Turner after Alex Turner u got me there!!!
I think those are the basics atm... I'll update if I can think of more!!
𝚆𝙰𝙽𝚃𝙴𝙳 𝙲𝙾𝙽𝙽𝙴𝙲𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽𝚂
It'd be cool to have some of her og crew around when she first moved to L.A!
Fans of her art (either paintings or music), would be cute to be some sort of mentor to someone omg??
ART FRIENDS!! Someone she can gush about art and visit every museum/local exhibition with (her own tortured painters department)
A FWB (we all know she'd be secretly in love with them but shh), or a one night stand, bonus points if the other person is super shy about it and it's extremely awkward every time they run into each other lmao.
An ex girlfriend... pls gimme that heart heart-wrenching sapphic drama.
First love!!! Could be wholesome friends now, or lingering feelings.
A crush... can be one sided, bold of u to assume she only ever crushes on (1) person???
EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING!!! I promise I'll excitedly yell about it with you ♡

massive TW: child+medical abuse, suicide, ableism
Contrary to the hospital’s suspicions, Beata had never been diagnosed with a mental illness, and prior to the DCF investigation, Jack says, she’d never suffered from depression. She had even undergone a court-ordered evaluation by a licensed psychologist who found “no evidence that would support the conclusion that Beata has falsified her daughter’s medical condition for any psychological purpose” and who concluded that “factitious disorder by proxy may safely be ruled out.” The psychologist did note that Beata may have been suffering from an “adjustment disorder” resulting from Maya’s illness and removal from their home. (Another report, written by Teppa Sanchez, observed: “Mother states that she is extremely tired and is very stressed and at times feels like she ‘wants to die.’”)
At the Kowalskis’ next family court hearing, All Children’s attorneys continued to argue that Maya needed to be kept away from her family and transferred to long-term inpatient medical foster care. The Kowalskis’ attorney handed Judge Haworth a letter Beata had addressed to him before taking her life. “Your heart is made out of iceberg!” it began, in her imperfect English. “ACH, DCF have destroyed my daughter physically and mentally … My daughter will never be who she was before October 13, 2016.” Haworth read the note, folded it, and put it away. He ruled that Jack could take Maya to Rhode Island to be evaluated by Pradeep Chopra, a professor at Brown University’s medical school who studies CRPS. Later, after Chopra wrote that Maya’s symptoms and response to treatments were consistent with CRPS, and that the diagnoses of Munchausen by proxy and factitious disorder were “incorrect,” Haworth remanded Maya back to Jack’s custody.
When Maya left All Children’s Hospital in January 2017, she weighed less than she did when she was admitted — a dark verdict on the separation test meant to detect Munchausen by proxy. She was so weak that it was difficult for her to sit up on her own, and Jack remembers having to put stuffed animals in the back seat of the car to support her body. At home, he says, Maya cried nonstop. Jack took her to physical therapy, installed solar panels to heat their pool for aquatherapy, and bought her a teacup Yorkie puppy. CRPS abates over time in most patients. A year and a half later, as Jack watched, astonished, Maya stood up out of her wheelchair, picked up her crutches, and slowly made her way across the room. After 12 more months of swimming, yoga, and exercise, Maya took her first unassisted steps in four years. “I bawled,” Jack said.
[...]
Much of what happened to the Kowalskis at All Children’s should not have occurred. It was not true that the parents could have been legally arrested if they had taken Maya home on her second day at the hospital. “Against medical advice” discharges are legal and occur every day in the United States; a 2007 study shows that one to 2 percent of all hospital admissions result in one. Also, Smith’s decision to access Maya’s confidential medical records through the All Children’s portal on October 8, 2016, appears to have violated the privacy law known as HIPAA, according to Blaise Wabo, a health-care-compliance expert at a cybersecurity audit firm. Only treating physicians are allowed to access patient records unless a parent gives written consent for another party to do so. Smith was never one of Maya’s treating doctors, and on the day she opened her confidential records, there was no active DCF investigation. HIPAA violations are punishable by significant fines and up to ten years in prison. When I asked All Children’s about how child-abuse pediatricians like Smith are able to access patient records, the hospital did not answer. (Smith disputed that any HIPAA violation occurred.)
this is an actual horror story. holy fucking shit.

A Rhode Island man who promoted ivermectin died from a common side effect to the veterinary medicine, sparking concerns from his followers about their own reactions to the drug.
Danny Lemoi, of Foster, had been taking a daily dose of veterinary-grade ivermectin since 2012, after he was diagnosed with Lyme disease, and he said he quit all other medical treatments five years later because he believed the drug intended for large animals like cows and horses had "regenerated" his heart muscle, reported Vice News.
“Though it was obvious that Danny had the biggest heart, it was unbeknownst to him that his heart was quite literally overworking and overgrowing beyond its capacity, nearly doubled in size from what it should have been,” wrote the administrators on his Telegram channel. “We understand that this is going to raise questions for those who were following him.”

I’ll be attending Rhode Island Comic Con 2022 all weekend! I will be cosplaying as Lindi from Allegra’s Window on Friday and Sunday, and Mac from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends on Saturday! Due to the prices going up and there being a ton of guests I want to meet this year (as well as things going on in my personal life), to save money I decided to reuse some of my previous cosplays.
I’ll be with @chasing-dreams-since-1995 all weekend!

“AMPHITRITE, the consort of Poseidon, was generally thought to have been a daughter of Nereus (although an alternative tradition presented her as a daughter of Okeanos, and it is stated in one source that she was the mother of the Nereids). She was a reluctant bride as was commonly the case with the Nereids, who preferred to live a carefree life as virgins in the company of their parents and many sisters. According to one account, Poseidon abducted her from the island of Naxos after she had emerged from the sea to dance on the shore with her sisters; or else she fled from him when he tried to court her, and hid herself in the depths of the Ocean near Atlas (i.e. in the far west). In the latter case, Poseidon sent many envoys in search of her, including his special beast the dolphin, who discovered her in the outer Ocean and carried her to Poseidon on its back (or at least let him know where she was hiding). The god was so grateful that he declared the dolphin sacred and placed an image of it among the stars (as the northern constellation Delphinus). After finally becoming the wife of Poseidon, Amphitrite lived at his side in his golden palace beneath the sea, enjoying high honour as the queen of the seas. Although she is depicted quite frequently in works of art as a goddess of noble aspect, often enthroned beside her husband, she rarely appears in mythical tales. According to a fairly ancient legend, she offered a gracious reception to Theseus (here regarded as a son of Poseidon) when he threw himself off a ship to prove to Minos that he was a son of the god of the sea; and a story of later origin claimed that she caused Skylla to be turned into a monster after discovering that her husband had embarked on a love affair with her. Poseidon and Amphitrite are credited with only a single child in the Theogony, the sea-god Triton, ‘who holds the depths of the sea and lives with his mother and the lord his father, a fearsome god’. Apollodorus adds two daughters, Benthesikyme (Wave of the Deep) and Rhode, the nymph or personification of the island of Rhodes. Rhode or Rhodos became the consort of the sun-god Helios, whose cult was especially prominent on Rhodes; conflicting accounts were offered of her birth. Benthesikyme is remembered solely as the foster-mother of Eumolpos.”

Additionally, she has a permanent pair of bone antlers growing from her skull thanks to a series of ‘experiments’ at Essex.
HISTORY
The early years of Dani’s life passed in relative normalcy; she was born the first of four children to a Czech immigrant couple in Providence, Rhode Island, and spent her childhood running around the suburb they lived in befriending anyone who’d stop long enough to talk to her. Kids her own age, their parents, the mailman, no one was too big or too small for a healthy dose of Dani’s cheerful chatter. At school her teachers despaired of ever getting her to keep quiet for an entire class period, but most simply encouraged her to write things down and save them for later rather than reprimand the one little girl almost everyone liked.
When she was nine, Dani made her first real best friend - a boy named Matteo, who’d just moved into their school district when he was placed with a new foster family. The two quickly became inseparable, and for four years they played together, studied together, shared secrets and planned adventures without a thought to all the ways the world might separate them.
That separation came far too soon, provoked by a middle school bully who couldn’t resist making Dani a target, though she no longer remembers why. The other boy got too close, made a threat that was a little too genuine, and all of a sudden Matteo is between her and the bully while the florescent lights overhead burst like balloons. Everyone in the room stares, but Dani’s eyes are full of wonder and admiration rather than the fear that seems to have struck their classmates and teachers.
Of course they hustle Matteo to the principal’s office to wait for his foster parents; Dani doesn’t want to stay behind in class, but the teacher insists and so she grabs Matteo’s hand and promises she’ll wait for him at their bus stop the next morning. And she would have, if only she’d gotten the chance, but when she tells her own parents what happened they tell her in no uncertain terms never to go near ‘that boy’ again. Her father says he’s dangerous, her mother says they won’t let him go back to school tomorrow anyway, and Dani begins to realize that she may never see her best friend again.
Her own mutation makes itself known later that evening, when her father catches her trying to sneak out a window and grabs her arm to pull her back inside. Furious and distraught, Dani barely feels the bone pushing through her skin until Ivan lets out a yell of pain and jumps back clutching his now bleeding hand. She is dangerous now too, and with very little deliberation Ivan and Sofia make their choice: she can’t stay.
One phone call and a four hour drive later, Danica Reznik becomes a resident of the Essex House, and her former life becomes little more than a memory. Through it all she thinks of Matteo, looks for him in every new face she sees, sighs with relief every time a dark-haired boy turns around and isn’t him. Wherever he is, it has to be better than here.

tw: abandonment trauma, emotional trauma
How cruel life can be to offer at such a young age the sensation that you’ve been unwanted? Although in the grand hazal eyes reacting to every movement of her parents she craved for their attention and security, her parents didn’t share the same connection. It lacked love from the ones that were supposed to raise her and the only one to be able to share this perspective for Meryem was time. During the two years spent in Turkey and later once they moved to Lunar Cove.
Growing old, the innocence of her childhood was shattered by the silent atmosphere of her house, the place she was supposed to call home. It felt colder than it should be, and although they provided what was needed financially — in the best way they could; Meryem was unable to summarize her experience until she was twelve years old as having a family. They were far from it. And once she couldn’t sustain it all anymore, Meryem packed her bags and left. The idea shaped in the midst of adrenaline seemed easier said than done, despite their lack of love towards her, they still provided a roof on top of her head and being away from her house made her scared, at first.
Meryem was ashamed to ask for help, but slowly she would aim for friends to give her shelter for a day or two, always leaving when she felt she was taking too much space, that whispers were an indicator parents wanted her out and didn’t know how to say so. Her last stop would also be her first experience at being loved. The Erkals.
Although there was a two-year difference between Meryem and Nesrim, Mer considered her one of her best friends, and perhaps that was why it took her so long to be able to claim for help from one of the people that mattered the most to her. Then, instead of noticing whispers about wondering when she would leave, it was about what they could do; instead of assuming it was a matter of time until they’d ask her to find somewhere else, their question was if she would like to stay. An adoption. It scared her in the same proportion that made her feel secure for the first time.
Her parents, the biological ones, claimed that she would be a nightmare in the Erkals life, but if they wanted the challenge, they’d gladly help them get Meryem. The disappearance of her biological parents once the case was over was a great example of how they were there mostly out of obligation. The moment they felt the freedom of not needing to raise her, they were no longer in the picture.
It should’ve been easier, being raised by a family that actually wanted her, but during her adolescence Meryem couldn’t actually believe it. She was constantly getting in trouble, irrationally trying to make them assume she was indeed a nightmare in their lives and would want her out of their house, but they never did. Meryem understood, then, that she had found people to describe as her family, as people that she could and should count on. And perhaps she could be that change in someone else’s life.
Meryem had no perspective of raising a family, but she could have an impact in children’s lives. Aside from being a witch and having magic in her to aid others, she focused on an career path that led her to becoming a school counselor, and whenever she wasn’t working at school, she’d be providing lectures both at schools and colleges, or any place her words would be able to aid someone that once felt like she did.
It isn’t to say that Meryem is healed from everything she had faced in the past. Scars are deep and carved in her memories; eventually, it also shaped her personality. It’s transparent to see how challenging Mer can be sometimes, in her distaste towards authorities and positions of power, in the act of needing someone else to help her. To the point that she’s mostly in the coven for the sake of her older sister.
After all, in the same proportion that she hated depending on others, Meryem is frightened by the idea of being left behind, of abandonment. In her own twisted perspective, if she’s present in others’ lives and their favorite activities, then she won’t be forgotten. And knowing how important the coven was to her sister, made her stay. She just never shared her relief that Nesrim was unable to become a Supreme.
Despite the hard armor Meryem uses to protect herself, she’s softer than expected. Someone to count on whenever needed. She just needed to learn how to be loved in return.
.♡    — CONNECTION IDEAS.
SOS: you’re both bad influences to each other but sometimes you’re also the one to restrain one another from doing something that could either get you in trouble or make you feel bad in the long run; either way, it works, it really works.
OPEN ARMS: you took meryem under her wings when no one else would, or when she felt no one else would, meeting you helped her understand that it’s nice to have friends and to actually allow people in, to the point that life upgraded your connection and you became family. — TAKEN BY: nesrim
GOOD DAYS: you’re friends ever since you were children, you met meryem while she was still dealing with her biological parents and you saw the nightmare it had been, maybe it’s one of the reasons why you still stayed; you knew she needed a friend and could use it for her life.
LONELY SOUL: there’s no attachment and no romantic feelings aside from how much one cares for another and how lonely sometimes you both can be... it’s just a mutual agreement of being around each other when silence is simply too much.
AWKWARD: you were together for awhile, but meryem never introduced yourself to her life completely, she was too afraid of you leaving to the point that it was easier to already give you reasons to prove her right; it isn’t to say that she didn’t love you, she just wasn’t ready to be vulnerable with someone that was willing to stay.
I HATE U: someone she can’t stand, there wasn’t really a clear reason why but she’s annoyed to be around them but the tension is there, it’s even tangible for those surrounding them; a rare thing to happen since it takes a lot to get on her bad side.
THE WEEKEND: texts usually reach you over a friday night, meryem always invites you for a night out, some adventure, anything that could make both of your weekend more entertaining than staying at home and you usually accept it.
