Thought I’d share these for anyone who hasn’t seen them :) They’re the official descriptions for each of the Anemoi albums on The Oh Hellos’ website!

Notos

Notos, the first installment in an ongoing series, is named for the ancient Greco-Roman god of the south wind, who brought storms in the summer. Musically, the record draws from the siblings' memories of summers spent exploring the Pacific Northwest with their grandparents, as well as their experiences with the frequent threat of hurricanes as they grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast. Thematically, the series considers the question: "where did our ideas come from?" Notos recounts a time when the duo weren't even aware there was a question to ask, and reflects on the backfire effect we experience when confronted with new information for the first time.

Eurus

Once that first question posed in the Notos EP is asked — "where did my ideas come from?" — it opens the floodgates to more. While wrestling with them all can ultimately lead to a fuller understanding of the world around you (and leave you with more empathy than you started with), it can also leave you feeling alienated from the communities you used to identify with. Eurus, released in early 2018 as the second installment in a series, is a continued interrogation of our own beliefs, and as Eurus was the wind most closely associated with autumn, the record seeks to capture the feelings of dark woods, dry branches, dead leaves, and wondering who had migrated — you, or your flock?

Boreas

Boreas, the northern wind, ushered in the harsh frosts of lonely winter. The arrangements of this third installment evoke images of snow-blanketed darkness, candlelight behind cupped hands, and a vast night sky ribboned with stars and auroras. As we wrote these songs, we found ourselves confronted with the ways we’ve personally and communally reflected the character of this wind — how we often avoid discomfort, even at the expense of others, until we are left cold, hard, and unfeeling. In this record, we ask the winter to instead kindle us into something warmer and softer than who we’ve been.

Zephyrus

The series concludes. Zephyrus, the final cardinal wind of this project, brought the gentle warmth of spring that summoned up a new year of growth rooted in the fertile ashes of all the structures that keep us isolated and unfeeling — the kind of growth we can see in ourselves, if we can muster the courage to be vulnerable. The arrangements mirror and embrace this shift, rising up like tender leaves breaking through concrete and cascading down like mountain rivers surging with the first thaw of the season. It’s been a long year; thanks for listening.

Someone perfectly lovely, called Paul Hendricks, put together this thoughtful map of the Four Winds community. His website, where this map was obtained, is HERE. What follows below the cut are Paul’s own words, detailing how he went about putting this together this map, complete with thorough book citations and explanations of inconsistencies!

“This is the rough map I've put together, based in the clues mentioned below, which are taken from various of the Anne books. (See note on the format of the references.)

The map uses a 'browser-safe' palette, so you should see roughly the same colours that I do. The orange/brown lines are roads. The dark-green areas are woods. The light blue is, of course, the sea.

Reconstructing the setting for the four books based on Four Winds and Ingleside has proved much more difficult than for Avonlea. Beginning with the premise that Four Winds is about 60 miles from Avonlea (AHoD, ch 1, 10th page), I tried a layout based on the area around Sturgeon, Gaspereaux and Georgetown, in the south-east part of the Island. Eventually it proved impossible to put together a consistent map on this basis. What is more, I realised that there was no evidence in LMM's diaries that she had ever been to that part of the Island.

I then tried a construction based on the area around New London, as there were many similarities of detail, and the area was well known to LMM. This fits in reasonably well with the descriptions of Four Winds in AHoD. There are some difficulties and inconsistencies noted below, but alternatives (such as putting the House of Dreams and the Lighthouse on the East side of the bay) have turned out to be unworkable. I have also managed to reconstruct the area around Ingleside, on the assumption that it is in the position occupied by Clifton/New London. Given the basic framework of roads that results, the result is more convincing than I had hoped, and seems to fit in quite well with the text of AoI, RV and RoI.

House of Dreams 'looks to the sunset and has harbour before it'. Dining room looks out on the harbour (AHoD, ch 2, 4th page). Living room windows and front door look towards the lighthouse (AHoD, ch 2, 5th page). There is a brook going through the corner of the garden.

The entrance of the harbour is between a bar of sand dunes and a sandstone cliff. The fishing village is where the sand bar meets the harbour shore (AHoD, ch 5, 1st page).

It is dusk, but there is no mention of seeing the setting sun. This suggests that going from Glen St Mary towards the house they are facing north or east. This is consistent if Glen St Mary is south, and the house is on the west side of the harbour (AHoD, ch 5, 1st page).

There is a chapel on the far side of the bay. The lighthouse is to the north, as they approach the house from the Glen. The house is 2 miles from the Glen, and 1 mile from the lighthouse. Miss Cornelia's house is between the House of Dreams and the Glen (AHoD, ch 5, 2nd page).

Poplars line the lane from road to house; fir trees between house and sea (confirms that the sea is to the 'back' of the house (AHoD, ch 5, 4th page).

Leslie's house is further up the brook, 'among the willows' (AHoD, ch 6, 4th page). The lane of Leslie's house opens onto the 'upper road' (AHoD, ch 9, 2nd page). Miss Cornelia's house is half a mile from the house of dreams (AHoD, ch 6, 5th page).

'From the deceit of the McAllisters...' (AHoD, ch 6, 5th page) is a paraphrase of an actual saying referring to LMM's relations, the Simpsons, the McNeils and the Clarkes, see also page xv of introduction to volume one of selected journals. Confirms the view that the families referred to in the 'over-harbour' area are modelled on LMM's own family in Clifton, Cavendish, etc.

As Anne and Gilbert are walking towards the lighthouse, the house 'up the brook' is to their right (AHoD, ch 9, 2nd page). There is some difficulty in fitting this in with my map. We might perhaps conceive an arrangement where the house by the brook was to the right hand side of the road to the lighthouse, though the road would have to be not so close to the shore as the modern road.

The distinction (AHoD, ch 10, 1st page) between the 'harbour shore', the 'sand shore' and the 'rock shore' is consistent with New London Bay - corresponding respectively to the shore inside the bay, the shore on the north side of the bar, and the shore to the north of the lighthouse.

'North shore' presumably means 'North shore of PEI' (AHoD, ch 14, 1st page). It was this which first alerted me to the possible inconsistency with my original presumption about the location of Four Winds.

'North-western sky' (AHoD, ch 18, 1st page), implies that the lighthouse is north-west of the house of dreams.

The Fishing Cove (AHoD, ch 27, 1st page) must be on the shore by the sand bar (therefore the same place as the fishing village). Anne and Gilbert go there via the lighthouse because intending to row over to avoid the long drive round by road which would otherwise be necessary.”

While the Hamon user heals the brunette, Rose steps up to the plate and delivers a round house kick to the succubus' head. Her heel makes contact with the being's skull, a loud crack being heard. "Such an arrogant brat!!"

"Out of the way Rose, the next blow is mine!"

Kikumi summoned her stand once more, Four Winds materializing as the elf makes her way back over to the enemy.

"Girls, she's getting weak, I can feel it!!" The elf shouted. "I believe that if we combine out efforts and attack as a group, all at once, we'll have her!!"

"SHANNA!!" As the succubus drew close again, rising to the brunette's provocations, Kazeko threw herself between them, shoving the demoness back with a burst of hamon, looping her arm around Shanna's and yanking her out of the way.

"KKGHYAAAAAAAAAA-!!!" The succubus reeled backwards in pain, falling to the ground, her chest heaving from the blow.

"Nh-nkh!! Shit...!" Shanna hissed between her teeth as she was sat down, Kazeko kneeling behind her, holding her younger friend gently. Warm, healing pulses, quite different from the unrefined attack burst from before, wash over the noble girl's face, healing the gash.

"You were getting too carried away, Shanna... just sit down for a minute, please? ... show me your hand, too. You're going to be fine." She offered her a soft smile, trying to help her calm down.

"But... that damn bitch- Ghahnnhgg-!!" She tried to stand up, her temper still flaring, but Kazeko firmly placed her hand on her shoulder, sending a practiced shock of paralysing hamon energy through her muscles.

"Not until your head is clear again, sweetie."

Meanwhile, before them, the succubus held a hand to her chest, staring at the woman in shock. "What... what in the hell is this...?! It... it burns-!!"

Looking closer, a burn could be seen on the creature of the night's chest. They were right, hamon inflicts damage!!

"This is it... Kazuno, quickly, get her attention." Rose raised her voice, glaring towards the pink haired demon. "Before she tries to attack Shanna again-!"

"You don't need to tell me twice, Rose." Kazu cracked her knuckles, falling into a fighting stance, eyes locked on their opponent. "Oi, pinky! You clearly don't know who you're dealing with! Why don't you surrender nice and quietly? We can avoid any more unpleasantness..." Her hands sparked, confidence palpable.

"You INSIGNIFICANT HUMAN CHILD!!" The succubus pushed herself up and flapped her huge wings, launching herself into the air again, turning her attention to the taunting brunette. "YOU'RE the one who doesn't know! YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!!!"

"Really? You're sure you don't just want to talk about it?" Her feet shifted, prepared to dive in either direction. Confident or not, she's not about to drop her guard.

"RRRAAHHGHH!" With an infuriated, almost feral scream, batlike wings flap, sending the succubus flying toward Kazuno, who ran at her in turn.

"FOUR WINDS!!!" Kikumi shouted, summoning her stand. "Lift her up, give her the high ground!!" The pastel stand's tail flicked, and she raised her arms, a whirling vortex blowing upward beneath their friend's running feet, throwing her up into the air, matching heights with the flying creature.

"Wha-!! ... Hah! Thanks Kikumi~! This is exactly the edge I needed!" Kazuno breathed deeply, the air around her mouth seeming to crackle with electricity, followed quickly by the rest of her body as she wound up a kick, not letting the opportunity go to waste.

The pink haired demon snarled. "You... what ARE all of you?! These powers... I've never-"

"We did warn you!!!" Kazuno cut her off, and launched her kick, potent hamon flowing down her muscular leg as she planted her foot forcefully and squarely in the centre of their attacker's chest, throwing her backwards with the sparking, bright sunlight energy.

"H-HHAAAAAAA!!" She crashes to the ground, her shoulders shaking as she pushes herself up to her feet again, and tries to lift her wings, one hand on her burnt stomach... but they won't move. "N-No-!!"

IN SOAP THEY SAY:

ITS A DIRECT LYRICAL REFERENCE TO NOTOS AHHH

I love this so much because Notos is the narrator realizing their mistakes and taking that first step towards change!

And in Soap, the narrator is trying to help their partner embrace change, so they’re teaching them the same lesson they learned wayyy at the beginning of their journey!

Not to mention Notos is the start of the Anemoi EPs and Zephyrus is the end, adding even further onto the cycle motif repeated throughout all four albums :)

So playing through the Fell Xenologue a strange thought sorta dawned on me... I kinda wish the Four Winds were the lords of the game instead of Alfred, Diamant, Ivy, and Timerra.

Okay, look I know I’ve talked about it before, I like the four lords for the most part. I think they’re charming and have some good supports. But I found my issue with them was sorta a reverse issue I had with the Three Houses lords. In 3H the main lords had so much contribution to the plot and practically moved it all on their own and focused on their arcs while the player character was basically a non entity, but in Engage, Alear has an arc and lives up to being the main character, while the four lords don’t contribute that much to the main campaign in terms of ongoing character arcs or plot relevance. Not helped by Veyle who ultimately eclipses them. 

Now obviously, the Fell Xenologue is a short DLC episode with chapters that get devoted primarily to one member of the Four Winds plus Nel and Nil. So it would be hard for me to say with certainty what a game staring Zelestia, Gregory, Madeline, and Mauvier would be like instead of the four lords. However, what I think stood out to me the most is the willingness to write the Four Winds as an actual group. Like they all clearly have a history and a dynamic and play off of each other. I think that was something missing from the Engage lords. They mostly focus on the relationship with Alear and the Emblem as this is really their first time all being together, but there isn’t like any real witty banter or characters bouncing off one another in a way the makes the lords feel like a unit. Which is sad because you spend time with them for so long and yet all four will just huddle together by the end of the game and usually exposits or make observations while the real dynamic of the game is Alear and Veyle.

Again, I don’t think these were bad characters, but with the time I spent with the Four Winds, I could tell that with was a group. That they all benefit as characters when you have them all together. Maybe InSys writers didn’t want to make supports seem less important if you put in characters interacting in the main campaign, but I feel like when you’re juggling four characters who are all essentially in the deuteragonist for most the game and don’t really act have any real interaction in the story it feels like a missed opportunity.

But yeah, Four Winds fun.

Teyvat’s map is upside down, how can I prove this? Mondstadt

Now we know that mondstadt’s protectors are venti and the four winds, which are: wolf of the north (andrius), dragon of the east (dvalin), falcon of the west (Venessa), and finally lion of the south (grand master of the knights of favonius), each one is assigned a direction, now let’s look at where they’re symbols or current locations are

In term of how the map is portrayed, they are in the opposite direction of which the represent, why is the wolf of the north the farthest down? Why is the dragon of the east farthest left? We’ll there is one explanation, the map of teyvat as it’s presented is not correct, while the map in game is portrayed like this

(Yes I know this map is incorrect but it has the correct general locations of each region, so bear with me)

Realistically if we follow the four winds it should be like this

In the real world winds are named according to which direction they come from, not the direction they’re headed to, so why isn’t teyvat’s map following that same principal? The abyss has us ascending stairs even though we should be going down, maybe if we follow that logic then it means that all of teyvat and the abyss are portrayed upside down, and if so, why is that? Is there possibly a deeper meaning to all of this?
