just finished day 1 and 2 of '14 days with you' with @randomfandomsoup. i will say i am definitely continuing it, its really good to my standards at least (this is the second visual novel i have ever played in my life).

i'm mainly a "ooo look at those graphics" person so actually having a story line is really nice. also, Ren's design is very nice on the eyes and so is the atmosphere of the game, even though knowing his back story to why he looks like that and that its a facade (thank you soup for explaining it to me/gen) is interesting to know

Happy New Year! I'm writing mini-reviews now!

For every game I finish in 2023 I've decided that I'll be writing a little review for every game I play. On my NYE stream, the only game I actually managed to finish was "I Love You Colonel Sanders: A Finger Lickin' Good Dating Sim," developed by Psyop games. Great way to start the year, I know.

It's a KFC-licensed game. Like the chicken. It's exactly what you think it is, but also it is so so much more. I believe, genuinely that I would enjoy this game even if I had to actually pay for it. It features at least four routes of content in which you can pursue two different characters. Now, of course, as a fast-food licensed game that isn't Cool Spot or Pepsiman, it's quite short and somewhat cheap, however, in the moment you would not think that.

The art, while frequently reused is consistently good, and the art style is consistent and conveys the food as well as the characters in an appealing light. It's certainly anime-fan bait, but hey, this game is absurd enough that I am willing to be pandered to.

I must mention the character design in this review, as it is easily the most "appealing" aspect of this game. Unfortunately, my two favorite characters are both not datable. This is a travesty, and you will see why in the images below.

As a bisexual who is weak for characters who fit both of these tropes I did, and perhaps this is because I was intoxicated and with friends, bark audibly at the screen when they appeared with alternate outfits.

I am a raccoon.

This does not happen every day.

Genuinely, I really don't have a lot to say. The art is good, and the game is fun if you don't take it seriously and recognize that it is fully just an ad for chicken, which they call attention to at the end of the game.

Should you play it? Maybe, I don't know, it's free, do you hate being advertised to?

Short Video Game Reviews: Odd Dating Sim Edition

Not-actually-a-spoiler alert: I loved both of these games, and you can see more of my thoughts from my liveblogs of them by clicking the tags.

I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator

What: visual novel/dating sim where you, a culinary student, attempt to woo your super-cool new classmate, Colonel Sanders. Can you convince him to take you on as a romantic and business partner?

This is an actual game made and released by KFC. Yes, the fast-food fried chicken chain. And uh, it’s good. It’s weird, but good. The team that made it clearly has anime experience--there’s an animated opening, one secondary antagonist is clearly a Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure reference, you have to fight a monster at one point. It’s so funny, and thus so fun.

You can get through the game in about an hour, and the save mechanism didn’t work super well for me (so when I got a sub-optimal result the first time around, I had to start over) but since the game goes so far, it wasn’t a big problem. And for the low price of free, I can take a few annoyances. Plus, the replay value of what other chaos can I wreak is pretty high.

A highlight of this is that it’s incredibly fun to recommend to people because the phrase “KFC Colonel Sanders dating sim” gets reactions.

Hatoful Boyfriend

What: visual novel/dating sim where you’re the first human student at the prestigious St. PigeoNation’s Institute, a school for talented birds. Go to class, make friends, and maybe find some romance...and maybe something else.

This is the first visual novel or dating sim that I ever played, and it set an incredibly high bar and offered a wide variety of endings that can produce a multitude of emotions, as one of my tagged posts noted: #sometimes this game is like 'haha pigeon dating sim silly fun very silly' and sometimes it's like 'hey WHAT the fuck'

Very fun, and if you unlock all the 14 possible endings, there’s a special ending after that that introduces a new side to the story. I played a few times without a guide, aiming for specific characters, and it was fun; then I used a guide to get the rest of the endings. This is made easier by the fact that you can have multiple save files, so you don’t have to start from the very beginning every time, plus you can set it on fast-forward until a choice or dialog comes up, so it can go pretty fast.

Quick and short reviews of dating sims that would kill me if I tried to force myself to do a completionist.

Monster Prom

I got the base game and the 2nd term DLC. It was incredibly fun but stat raisers get tiring. Love Vera, Damien, Liam, and Calculester in that order. I ended up liking the playable characters more than the love interests. Wild. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I love you Colonel Sanders

Very fun 1 hour read. It’s a joke but man was it fun. ⭐⭐⭐

Pastry Lovers

I played the whole thing and made an incredibly long review on steam. Nice campy otome. I don’t really have a favorite but enjoyed a few routes more than others. If you want to finish all routes it’s about 14 hours. I actually learned a little about pastry making. ⭐⭐⭐

Nekopara Catboys Paradise

I remember all the flak this got from original nekopara fans and I say fuck those assholes. The game is a fully voiced and free otome that is more like a prologue. I hope they’d continue making this. Let us girls have our r-18 cat boys too damn it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Typical

The visuals aren’t my style and I described this as “it felt like I was reading a western romance book”. It’s been a while so I can’t remember much but near the end something shocked me. ⭐⭐⭐

Sounds of Verity

If you like dating demons this one would be up your alley. Same devs as Let’s not stay friends.

Hatoful Boyfriend Holiday Star

It’s a whack adventure. What else did you expect from this series. Thoroughly enjoyed the chaos. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Blush Blush

Clicker game I played years ago when it just came out. Haven’t gone back in a while. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fall... in Love (demo)

1 hour read. The voice acting needs work but I love the background design with a passion. Everything else is okay. ⭐⭐⭐

Rising Angels Reborn

I only managed to reach what I believe to be the first major route branch off when I called quits. Scifi and mystery are not really my thing but I do love the characters, save for maybe the kitsune who I have a love-hate relationship with (which is understandable considering what happened in the story)⭐⭐⭐ ⭐

More Halloween costumes with a bit of a twist! You see, Colonel Hicks couldn't participate himself as his restaurant has some specials around this time. But thankfully the recent release of a...rather bizarre dating sim featuring a young attractive version of himself gave him an excuse to send his most attractive male employee dressed as this version of him instead! Listen, I'm never gonna pass up an opportunity to remind y'all that I Love You Colonel Sanders is a Thing, it's even wilder than the premise suggests. And of course we've got Gina as Marina here as well, hehe :3 Decided to make her lipstick and nails aqua green to match too, at the very least the nails work as an interpretation of Marina's finger gradient, I imagine that'd be a bit harder to pull off without making a mess tbh.
