Hi there, Lulu here.

I do have a real name but I prefer to go by Lulu on here and Ao3 so please use that.

I go by she/he/they. Call me what you want I don't mind. It changes day by day for me in the real world, but my friends and family don't know that.

I'm pansexual but again only a few people know that.

I'm in my 30's but have the maturity of a teenager unless I'm in parent mode when I have to pretend to be a grown-up (It does not last long!).

I am a huge huge huge Harry Potter fan (Fuck JK, she's a dick!) My house is full of so many HP-related items. In fact, I think every room has something in it, thank the gods my husband is also a massive nerd.

In case you can't tell I am Neurospicy. I am in the middle of getting diagnosed with ADHD and by that I mean I am procrastinating actually starting the process.

Oh, yeah I like so much stuff I can't think what else to put here but yeah Harry Potter, mainly Marauders era but I love anything really.

My fav ships are Wolfstar (I've loved them since I was a young thing and didn't even know it was a thing." Jegulus (My new love.) Dramione (Lord have mercy) Drary (Lord I need more mercy) Pandalily (Meep!) Dorlene (Squeek!) I like Marylily as well but not as much, but I love them when I read them.

Things that make me happy

You guys. Honesty it's Tumblr, I've only just really found this and all you amazing people who like my silly stories that I've only been writing regularly since December 23 when I found you all. My husband and son make me happy and so do my dogs and cats. I love watching storms and autumn. I read a lot, I crochet, I knit, I write. I am a huge fan of chocolate. If you give me chocolate I will be your friend.

But yeah I like a lot of different stuff, it depends on my mood as to what I listen to. I drive my husband mad because I like songs by lots of people but I can't remember what they're called or who they're by.

Books

My all-time favourite book will always be Prisoner of Azkaban. It is my happy place.

My house is full and I mean full of books. I don't actually know how many I have but last time I estimated I had 300 in my bedroom alone. (There are piles of books in every room 😬)

Shows/movies

Harry Potter, The Martain, The Princess Bride, Labyrinth, Hunger games, Twilight (Don't judge me they got me through a dark time.), How to train your Dragon, Disney anything, plus others there are so many and I'm bored of listing.

Good Omens, Schitts Creek, Parks and Rec, Bake off, Handmaids tale, It's always sunny, community, Harbin hotel, archer, vampire diaries. Plus more but yeah typing.

When did you publish your first fic on AO3?

Describe your writing process from “Oh, I have an idea” to pushing publish on AO3.  

I immediately start a google doc when I get an idea. I can add to it if I think of something I want to include or write a paragraph here and there. Brainstorming with my writer friends when I’m stuck is very helpful with getting to the finish line. They also talk me off a ledge when I’ve procrastinated too long and it just isn’t coming together. The last step before publishing is to panic that it’s not good enough. I’m a perfectionist and my own worst critic but I’m getting better!  

Tell me about your most recent fic. What do you love about it? Is there anything you think you could have done better? 

It’s called The Truce and it was my first anon ask. I love that two people in the fandom came together and made a fic idea come to fruition. The anon loved it so this fic is extra special to me. Something else I do (because I’m ridiculous) is run my fic through a text reader. Hearing it read back is much different than reading it because you catch things you ordinarily wouldn’t have especially if you don’t have a beta. In terms of whether the fic could be better, of course. I always think my fics could be better even if I’m happy with how they turned out 

What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about publishing their fic for the first time? 

Use a beta!! You will be much happier with the result and having a beta I trust has been invaluable. If you’re interested in being a beta make a post about it because a lot of writers have no idea how/where to find one. Your fic will never be perfect so just rip the bandaid off and publish it. Tag the hell out of your fic so it’s easier to find. Use a pseud that sticks out from the rest so readers are more likely to remember it. Lastly, choose a fic title that is unique or used less frequently so it doesn’t pop up with multiple other fics in a search. 

Plot vs vibes - pick one. 

Vibes. I think anyone can come up with a plot but your vibe is what makes a fic unique to you. It also shows readers what to expect from your writing so if they're looking for something specific they may be more likely to keep your fics in mind. 

If you could say one thing to your fellow fic writers, what would it be? 

Writing should be fun! If it’s stressing you out then consider taking a break and do some self care instead. I have one more, which is to support other writers. Reblog their posts and if they don’t have Tumblr make a post with a link to their fic. If you see that a writer is struggling then consider reaching out to offer support. 

If you could say one thing to the people who read your fic, what would it be?

Thank you!!! Your support and encouragement means the world to me! I really look forward to your comments and what you thought about the fic. It makes me a better writer and your encouragement keeps me motivated to continue writing. 

Do you think your fics have a brand? What is it? 

Yes. I like writing about David & Patrick’s emotions, vulnerability, and their relationship dynamics.The show not tell of nonverbal body language is a bitch but it often conveys emotions/feelings that dialogue just can’t. It also gives the fic more life and pulls you into the character’s experiences. It definitely helps with the pining idiots trope especially so for Patrick. I’m drawn toward writing angst but it always results in strengthening their relationship and/or gaining a better understanding of each other. Okay, and smut. 

Tell me about one of your favorite headcanons. 

Patrick changes his mind about going slow. We all saw the want in their second kiss, which also  leads me to believe that he’s confident and competent in the bedroom despite his lack of experience. Rachel and not coming out to his parents were fear based and not necessarily things he was trying to hide. David shouldn’t have been as upset as he was since he also avoided talking about the past.

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

i think it would be really fun to write an assassin/spy au for one of my ships, but idk if i can pull it off or able to flesh it out enough for it to work. I also briefly had an idea for a Tuck Everlasting au for Schitt's Creek with the Roses being the Tucks' and Patrick being Winnie after relistening to the musical soundtrack, but thought it would be to sad to write considering the ending. (even though that's the point lol)

19. Give us a small teaser from one of your WIPs.

okay, so last night i watched Queen Charlotte and Brimsley and Reynolds were so cute and i thought, why aren't there any romances based on the servants? and then ofc i start thinking about a buddie regency au where they're servants and hearing all the tea of the nobility. so here's a little something that i have written atm

“Buck,” Eddie grabs hold of Buck’s suit jacket, halting his steps toward the 118. The walk towards the gaming hell took a lot longer than Buck wanted it to, originally wanting to take one of Bobby’s carriages but Eddie refused. Told Buck that he wasn’t going to get in trouble for one of his stunts.  “We’re not going to get in trouble, Bobby won’t mind!” Buck said as he headed towards the stables. “Really? Just like he didn’t mind the last time you stole his carriage?” So walking towards the infamous 118 it is.  “We can’t go in here,” Eddie continued, dragging him towards an alley. “That place is for nobles. Which we are not.” Buck snorts, taking Eddie’s hand off his arm. “Relax, no one will notice as long as you act like you belong. You taught me how to act like a proper manservant, now I’ll teach you how to gamble like nobility.” Buck winks at Eddie as he continues his way back to the 118. “What’s the difference between regular gambling and gambling like a noble?” Eddie reluctantly follows, eyes shifting in every direction. Buck can tell he’s thinking that at any moment some earl or duke will pop up and point an accusing finger at them claiming them to be imposters. He grabs Eddie’s hand, thumb rubbing reassuring circles against his palm.  “Better scotch and higher stakes. Come on, wipe that guilty look off your face and let’s go inside.”

Alright, my 10 days of Star Wars blogging is over. Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Also whatever I'm into at the moment. I am always excited about LOTR, Stargate (current rewatch is SG-1), Person of Interest, and pretty much any queer content. I'm just tired and can't come up with stuff right now.

You'll probably see me post about my current shows, which are Dexter, Disenchantment, and Leverage, all of which had new seasons or spinoffs recently, and I've had to rewatch to catch up.

Personal stuff, probably gonna be a lot about buying a house, since that's a thing I'm doing right now (the market sucks, this is a terrible time to buy, but there's a creek in the backyard of the place we're buying!)

currently reading: My fiction is pretty much all fanfic right now. But nonfiction I'm reading is Fashionopolis by Dana Thomas, The Creation of Patriarchy by Gerda Lerner, and Pussy, a Reclamation by Regina Thomashauer (this is actually a re-read!)

currently listening to: I feel that a well crafted pop song is something that is highly underrated and hard to do well. Just saying. I am loving my Day List from Spotify in general. I think Olivia Rodrigo's new album is seriously genius and I don't say that lightly. I always love Taylor Swift. But also I have a rotation of things like Squeeze, Radiohead, and Fleetwood Mac! I'm ecclectic.

currently working on: Okay. @historicallysam knows that I secretly want to write a fic. I have three fics that I've started and it is unclear if I will ever finish them because I feel like I don't really know how to write a story. But I'm having fun!

One is a Henry in the Stripperverse story because I am in love with that au. In it, the strip club that Henry worked at (that's super cheesy) gets closed down and he gets hired by Zahra at the strip club that Alex works at (that's super fancy) and Alex is pissed because he's the star of that club...plus Liam just dumped him and Alex is feeling insecure. It's a whole thing.

Another is Alex and Henry dated in college but Henry dumped Alex and left NYC and Alex was devastated. Years later he's working at the ACLU and his boss introduces him to his new partner on a case--Henry. Alex is in another relationship, in love, and considering moving in with him but obviously Henry showing up throws a big ole wrench into that..

Lastly, a one-shot where Alex is a Thai Massage Therapist and Henry is a new client that's come in with a groin injury. Yup. ;)

That was fun to share those here because this may be the extent to which they are ever shown to the world!

Just thinking about things - and people talking about doing podcasts and listening to podcasts had me thinking about my old @todaydreambelievers blog and podcast.

So, some facts...

1. During Season 6 - Kurt and Blaine sing Daydream Believer by The Monkees. And I've always been emotionally attached to that song. Have I ever told you guys why? Well... Fifteen years earlier, when I was but a teenager myself, Dawson's Creek used a slowed down version of the song during a pivotal, emotional moment for the Pacey/Joey romance - which I supposed you could say was one of my first ships (though - we didn't use that term back then). The song has remained significant to me since then, and hence I named my blog after that.

2. It's not a mistake that it's 'to' instead of 'two'. When I was first coming up with the blog - a friend of mine said I should do a pun on the word 'to' -- so that it could be read like a toast - hold a glass up and cheer to daydream believers -- all of us. And then it puns with the word 'two' to reference both Kurt and Blaine. I don't think people got it, though, and often would write Today Dream Believers -- which doesn't make any sense, but I get people's confusion.

Also - finding a url based on daydream believer was a pain in the ass, hence me going with the pun.

3. TDB was originally just a fanfic prompt site - and if you go back far enough you can find the prompts. When TDB started doing the rewatch and podcast I created @todaydreambelieversfic

4. The friend I created the blog with actually had another blog. My blog would be fic related and hers would be meta/analysis related. For the life of me, I don't remember what it was - but she only did it for a few months. Fun fact, though - the color scheme of tdb is blue and purple to represent Kurt's proposal colors and the color scheme of her blog was yellow and green to represent Blaine's proposal colors.

We thought we were so clever. ;)

Did you write more/less fic than you thought you would this year, or about what you expected? This is the lowest year I’ve had since I started writing fic in 2019, but I also finished a draft of an original novel this year (shh, don’t tell anyone).

What’s your favorite story you wrote this year? Just one? Yikes. I love my Everyday Magic series and my favorite is probably This Town Ain’t Big Enough

Did you take any writing risks this year? For fic? Probably not, I wrote mostly for fun. But writing original stuff has been a huge scary risk all the way down.

Most popular story you wrote this year? Where Words Fail

Most fun fic to write: Probably You Had Me At Meow, just because it was so silly.

Biggest disappointment: I feel like multi-chapter fics have been hard this year? I thought my guardian angel fic Take These Broken Wings would be more popular. 

Biggest surprise: I wrote not one, but two, fics about geese this year (David Rose vs the Canada Geese and A Wild Goose Chase) and I learned that people have strong feelings about geese. 

Do You Have any fanfic/podfic goals for the new year? Keep writing things that I think are fun and/or funny. I’d like to do more magic fics, but we’ll see how inspiration strikes.

✰ you guys have definitely gotten drunk together occasionally. Of course before the legal age and even on weekdays because it’s “fun”

✰ Couldn’t tell you how eren’s drivers license was accepted at a convenience store but by 3am you’re both wasted in his room most likely full of snacks and white claws

✰ and with a crazy s/o comes a high libido LEMME TELL YA

✰ when you’re new in the relationship (or sober), he’ll be perfectly fine with taking things slow and simple.

✰ but if you’re both in the mood he’s going all out 🥴

✰ don’t get this boy started on carnivals/amusement parks. If you tell him how much you love them he won’t let go of your hand until every ride is ridden and you’re practically puking on the way home

Have you’ve ever used Randonautica? Basically it’s an app that picks a random location in your local area for you and friends to go to, finding clues and surprises when you reach your destination. But sometimes the surprise is pretty frightening lmao. ppl have found bodies and shit-

✰ yeah you guys go randonauting just about every weekend

✰ and you always end up trudging through tall grass or mud to find some abandoned house or deserted creek with lots of mysterious things

✰ you almost always can’t find your way back to your starting point and it freaks you both out sm, but it’s hilarious when you see eren trying to hide any fears. He’s probably shaking💀

✰ you take walks together in the dead of night for fun i can feel it

✰ but of course that doesn’t stop from eren being protective of you

✰ he never lets his arm slip from holding you, or letting you use any of his clothes to keep you warm🥺

✰ do you raid his fridge? yes. Does he care? He’s probably doing it with you

✰ it’s like you’re high on sugar, or some other drug he somehow bought, but as long as you’re happy and free to be yourself, that’s all that matters to him

10. Who’s your OTP from the franchise?

That's a tough question, there's so many good ones. If I really had to pick though, it'd be Brickoppy. . . and Breek don't judge me.

11. And, on the other side of the coin, who’s your NOTP in the franchise?

Like I said, there's a lot of good ships in the Trolls franchise. The only one I'm not a fan of is the heteronormative interpretation of Broppy.

12. Got any fic recs? Share ’em! Talk up your favorite authors! Spread the love around!

Ooh, here's a fun one! Prepare yourself, I'm 'boutta dump my entire collection of bookmarks on you guys. Fair warning, some haven't been updated in years, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll be completed one day!

Also, some of these do have sexual content, or potentially triggering subject matter, so I highly advise you read the tags before you start reading.

A Healthy Balance by Toxicthecat4836 is also a really good one. It's essentially a more fleshed out rewrite of the first movie. I find it really interesting because it doesn't feel like you're just reading the movie, it's an engaging story in it's own right.

Edit: Do not, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, harass or guilt the authors into updating. I do not care if they haven't updated in 4 days or 4 years. They will write at their own pace and it's our responsibility as readers to respect and support them. They are human beings, and they should be treated as such.

A Calming Bothersome Trip by WeirdNCrazy is a great one, to start off. It's set in AU where Branch is sent by King Peppy to act as an ambassador to the other 5 kingdoms. And there's found family! It's completed and 30 chapters long.

Come Hell or High Waters, I'll Stay by Your Side by FictionalDragonMother (@thicctails). This one is really interesting because it explores an AU where the trolls have more animalistic qualities like claws, fur patterns, and tails, with Branch and Cooper making contact with the other tribes several years before the first movie. Branch also struggles with his sense of belonging due to his parentage that’s being kept a secret from him.

When the Falls Turn Amethyst by Lawlly. This one is a Soulmate AU, as well as an AU where Branch doesn't regain his color and Creek doesn't turn traitor. Poppy makes Branch and Creek roommates after Creek’s pod gets destroyed, and they’re forced to confront their conflicting feelings about each other.

Bluetiful by PhoenixDiamond (@queentitan). Branch x Hefty is a ship I never thought I'd be into, but here I am. Their dynamic is so exciting to read as they figure each other out and fall in love on the way, and the dynamics between the Smurfs and the Trolls in general are very interesting, but I don’t want to spoil anything on that end.

Lean On Me by PriestessOfNox (@priestessofnox). This one was actually inspired by Bluetiful and diverges from the original fanfic after the fourth chapter. It is 78 chapters long people! And it's not even done! I can't deal, I can't even put to words how much I love this fanfic. You just gotta read it to get it. There are discussions of sexual assault and one flashback in chapter 52, but it doesn’t get very graphic.

It Hits You Like A Train by QueenEchidna. Another Breek fanfic. The pining is immaculate in this one, and their dynamic super fluffy without sacrificing their individual personalities. However, I will warn you, there is a flashback at the end of chapter 7 containing domestic violence and explicit sexual assault that isn't between the main pairing. If either of those are triggers for you, I would not recommend reading this one, or the end of that specific chapter at the very least.

Destiny's Bloom by PhoenixDiamond. This one is kind of a Soulmate AU but they don't use the word. Creek and Branch find out they're partners and try to have their partnership nullified, which ends up backfiring, and now they have to learn to live together, while learning more about each other beyond their perceptions of the other and tentatively rekindling their childhood friendship. (I am just now realizing that most of the Breek fanfics I read make them share a space before it gets to the romance bits and I don’t know if I should laugh at that or not)

All Trolls Used to Go to Heaven by PriestessOfNox. Crossovers are amazing, especially this one. It's loosely inspired by All Dogs Go to Heaven, where Creek resurrects himself with the watch of his life after getting eaten by the hill monster to save Poppy from an afterlife in purgatory. What really drew me in though is the mystery. You can't glean anything about where the plot will go from the tags because there's only 3. It's rated Teen though so I wouldn't worry about it going into 18+ territory.

Automatic by AllCatsUnite. Poppy strikes a deal with Branch that, in exchange for a month of no over the top parties or musical numbers, Creek will teach him about meditation for a month. They end up accidently bonding, and start hanging out together of their own volition.

The Rock Creek AU by @captainunderkrupp. This one is technically not up yet but I’m going to promote it anyway because I’m that excited about it. This fic will be great for angst-lovers and people who like a good redemption arc. While there will be some dark themes, the author is working to make it as accessible as possible for people who want to read it.

A quick primer on Schitt’s Creek

So apparently going by the comments on some of my fics I’ve done the thing where some of you who have been reading my fanfic a lot over the years want to read my newest stories without ever having seen the canon source material! You are all valid and I support you. 

So I thought it might be nice to write a bit of a primer on the show so you at least know what these people look like and who they are.

First of all I recommend just...uh, watching the show! It really is fantastic, and not just because of the amazing queer normalization. It’s funny and surprising and strange and heartwarming.

Caveat. A lot of people struggle with the first season. It is true that some viewers find it a rough start. The Roses all have significant character arcs and to do that you have to start from somewhere, let’s say. Also the tone of the show and its pace changed markedly between seasons two and three, which is when Dan Levy took over as head writer and they got a bunch of new writers. But even if you’re not quite feeling it from the first episode (I did not have this problem but some people do) I promise, you will be rewarded. And it’s fast, the episodes are only 20 minutes, so.

So! WTF even is this show. 

The Premise: The wealthy Rose family lose all their money when their finance guy absconds with it having never paid taxes. They’re left with nothing but the clothes (and wigs) on their backs and the ownership of a small town called Schitt’s Creek that father Johnny once bought for his teenage son as a joke. They relocate there and move into a dilapidated motel, thanks to the good graces of the town’s rednecky mayor, Roland Schitt (Chris Elliott). There they occupy two adjoining rooms, the parents in one and siblings in the other.

The Roses

Johnny (Eugene Levy) - Patriarch Johnny Rose made his money with a chain of video stores. Johnny is the straight man of the family, finding himself constantly shepherding his dramatic spouse and offpsring. 

Moira (Catherine O’Hara) - a former soap opera star, Moira is a creature not of this reality, it sometimes seems. She is an eccentrically outlandish persona who cares deeply for her family but is often befuddled as to how to handle those emotions or express them. 

David (Dan Levy) - firstborn son David is probably the character most viewers connect with first and more strongly, for a variety of reasons. His personal arc(s) are really the show’s emotional backbone. A former gallerist and pansexual aesthete, David is constantly frustrated by the Incorrectness of everything happening to the family.

Alexis (Annie Murphy) - younger sister and socialite, kind of a Coachella girl, who has spent most of her life globetrotting and getting herself mixed up in outlandish scenarios (it’s a running joke on the show for her to drop in “That one time when I was...” stories as offhand remarks). David is very protective of her even though they fight constantly, and often bailed her out of her Situations when their parents were too caught up in their own stuff.

The Honorary Roses

While the central “character” of the show is the Rose family, in my opinion there are six core characters, which includes these two.

Stevie Budd (Emily Hampshire) - Employee of (and later owner of) the motel where the Roses fetch up. She is David’s best friend and the first person in town he connects with. She is snarky and deadpan and sarcastic. She and David have a short-lived romantic/sexual relationship which ends amicably in season two, but their close friendship remains an important part of the show (yet another thing SC does that’s quietly revolutionary - feature exes who decided to be just friends and then actually do that). She later develops a strong surrogate-father relationship with Johnny as he becomes the co-owner of the motel.

Patrick Brewer (Noah Reid) - David’s business partner, and by the end of the show, husband. Although the show has a great deal to offer apart from this, a lot of people watch mostly for the David & Patrick relationship (which is fine, it’s a big part of the show). Note: if you are watching for this, Patrick does not appear in the show until the mid-third season. At first Patrick seems like an oasis of down-to-earth normalcy amidst all these larger-than-life personalities but it doesn’t take long to realize he’s actually an enormous troll who expresses his love for David by gently roasting him constantly.

And the Others - The show is an ensemble, and apart from these six folks, includes a lot of great secondary characters. Veternarian Ted Mullens (Alexis’s on/off boyfriend), Mayor Roland Schitt and his wife Jocelyn (who is one of my favorite characters), town council curmudgeons Ronnie and Bob, cafe waitress Twyla (played by Dan Levy’s sister Sarah), the local all-gender Casanova woodworker Jake, and the Schitts’ adult son Mutt, Alexis’s first hookup in town.

The Arc: This show is about how the Rose family - who have historically been distant and disconnected - had to lose all their money to find themselves as a family, and later, for each of them to find new fulfillment for themselves. They start out chafing and struggling to get out of this new reality, trying to find a way to sell the town, get “back to normal,” but gradually, they fit themselves into the community. Their family reconnection is pretty strong by the end of S2 (the final scene of that season was my first teary moment) and starting in S3, each of them finds a way to rediscover themselves. Johnny invests in the motel and in Stevie. Moira joins the town council and the local women’s a cappella singing group. Alexis goes back to school and starts pursuing a career in public relations. David takes over a vacant general store and turns it into the Rose Apothecary (which you have probably seen on merch everywhere), a venue for local artisans to sell what they make. It is through this venture that he meets Patrick, who first consults and then decides to invest and become David’s partner in the store.

The show is at the same time outlandish, hilarious, touching, abrasive and over the top. The Roses are over-the-top characters - especially Moira, who speaks in an unidentifiable accent and uses words that may or may not exist - and the story seems to exist in a kind of alternate reality (it’s a fandom joke that the timeline of the show makes no sense - it doesn’t - and it is always summer in SC except for one time when it was Christmas). There is also, by design, no homophobia in Schitt’s Creek. The various iterations of queer characters and relationships aren’t just represented, they’re normalized in a way that I didn’t know I was missing until I saw it.

Plus, it’s fun. Like many of Eugene Levy’s previous works (although the show is really Dan’s creation), the show makes use of musical set pieces. Probably the most famous is the iconic mid-season 4 episode “Open Mic” in which Patrick and David host an open mic night at the store and Patrick serenades David with an acoustic cover of Tina Turner’s “The Best” (arranged by actor Noah Reid, who is IRL a talented singer-songwriter, check out his albums, they’re great). It’s one of the most romantic things I’ve ever seen, made more poignant by the really remarkable face journey David goes through as he listens.

Another big moment was season 5′s production of “Cabaret,” directed by Moira and Jocelyn and starring Patrick as the Emcee and Stevie as Sally Bowles. The rehearsals and performance were mined for a lot of great moments.

um, lmao. way more than i thought i would. i also didn't realize it was quite so many. i tend to write short lil plot bunnies to get them out of my mind, and i guess they added up.

Did you take any writing risks this year?:

i don't know if i necessarily pushed myself out of my comfort zone significantly, but i did write david POV a few times, my most difficult POV.

honestly, my biggest writing risk was writing so much in such little time. starting with tropefest, i got into the dangerous habit of writing the bulk of my fest fics during the fest itself, then submitting via extension. i managed okay and the works turned out well, but it wasn't enjoyable. i'm going to try not to do that again.

(oh, i did write about death, which isn't my usual thing. [you'd always go past where our feet could touch - mind the tags!])

Most fun fic to write:

salt air and the rust on your door was an amazing collaboration with @schitthappens, Amanita_Fierce, @schittposting, @roguebebe, and @sunlightsymphony. producing it for elevate was a lot of work, but it bonded us all together and deepened in our friendships in a way that paralleled the ongoings of the fic.

i also collaborated with a lot of those usual suspects (@schittposting, Amanita_Fierce, @rhetoricalk, @sunlightsymphony) on measure by measure (stevie/alexis/twyla band au) and had a blast composing and playing music for the pod in addition to writing.

Biggest surprise:

i went from 'ruth? who's ruth?' to 'i would die for ruth!!' in 0-60. show this town how to kiss these stars (ruthie's first date) holds a very special place in my heart; it felt very natural to develop my characterization of ruth, and i'm really happy with how this turned out.

also, i remain deeply honored (and, still, surprised) by all of the people who took the time to make podfics of my work this year. thank you ❤️

Do you have any fanfic/podfic goals for the new year?

finish you and i and nobody else (the twylexis bach au). make more music fics/pods with my friends. help twylexis surpass 350 fics and ruthie surpass 150. lessen my fest participation to help my sanity. write more long-form fics.

How many fics have you written? 27 

When did you publish your first fic on AO3?

Describe your writing process from “Oh, I have an idea” to pushing publish on AO3. 

It starts with some kind of outline. Usually just a couple lines of “this happened, then this happened.” As the story develops, so will the outline. (The outlines for my long fics are multiple pages and have many, many subsections). After the fic is (mostly) drafted, I share it with an amazing beta. With their feedback I edit and edit and read it again and again until I can’t look at the thing anymore. That’s when I post it. 

The exception is my Inconvenient Boners series. With that one I made a conscious effort to get out of my own damn anxious, perfectionist head and just have fun with it. I draft it, edit it, read through it an appropriate number of times, and then post it. 

Tell me about your most recent fic? What do you love about it? Is there anything you think you could have done better?

While it’s not technically my most recent, I want to talk about You Were There All Along. I wrote that whole thing in less than a month (record speed for me) and I poured everything I have into it. That fic is so close to my heart and I couldn’t be prouder of it. One fic I think I could have done better was I Can’t Pretend It’s Okay When It’s Not. I think I rushed that one. There are some edits I wish I could make even now. 

What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about publishing their fic for the first time? 

Get a beta. It’s scary, getting feedback. Putting yourself out there like that but please, trust me, get a beta. Every time I’ve listened to the wise words of a beta, my fic improved tenfold. 

Also, after you post, try not to focus too much on how many kudos your fic has. There are a lot of reasons why a really great fic doesn’t have many kudos. Kudos are wonderful and I love them, but they’re not an accurate representation of the quality of a fic. 

But the comments. The comments are everything. ♥️

What grammatical error do you make ALL the time?

I’ll be honest with you. I was well into my twenties before I started really using affect/effect and then/than correctly. I’m also firmly in the “snuck is a word” camp. “Sneaked” makes me cringe. Hard. 

Tell me about one of your favorite headcanons. 

Outlines - yes or no?

Yes. But they aren’t set in stone. Fics can have multiple outlines. 

What do you do when you get stuck?

I switch to a different fic for a while. Or waste time on tumblr and YouTube. When I’m particularly indecisive, I’ll bounce around between my WIPs without really settling on one. 

Tell me about a story that you wish you could write but that you’re not quite ready to tackle.

Action/adventure and Mystery AUs. The Who dun it/ spy vs spy/ epic battle stories. They are too big for my brain.

Clandestine Meetings: my first fic in the fandom (and a smutty one lol) i wrote this because i was feeling frustrated that at the time there weren't a lot of pwps that i wanted to read so i did what every writer did and wrote one myself. and thus began my schitt's creek fanfic writer journey!

Sunshine: a little drabble about the first time patrick calls david sunshine. i found it kinda weird that the show did this one off pet name patrick gave for david in one episode and then kind of dropped it unlike with david's honeys for patrick and i wanted to figure out that sunshine came to be and this is what happened

Drabble Life 2022: i loved doing these fun challenges every week and each time i got more and more into the character's voices so it was a win-win for me

A Lesson In Flirting: okay who doesn't love dumb, oblivious patrick? writing this 5+1 fic was a blast and having it been inspired and gifting it to @smallumbrella369 was even greater

Public Relations: okay, i know it's not completed yet, but i'm super proud to know that i can write an actual multichapter fic with a plot i find that amazing of me. also im super proud of making a trope slightly original (a fake dating that's actually fake dating and both of the fake daters falling in love with other people? come one who wouldn't want to read that?) so yeah, this one takes the cake

so i've only started writing again this year so i think my improvements are kinda small but i will say:

description, i've been pretty shit at description and awesome at dialogue so i feel like i've been getting a lot better at describing how people are feeling/doing at the moment in the story

editing, before i never edit, now i sometimes edit which tbh is not much better but is still an improvement

i guess trying to relax with validation? like trying to reassure myself my fics don't have to immediately become number one hits and that there are people who do love them and overall i'm writing for me and that's all that matters in the end.

2 resolutions:

don't rush-my writing will get there when it gets there. and to not pressure myself into getting x thing done in like five minutes. slow and steady wins the race

again with the validation, i'm still learning to write for me and not for everyone else although it's still nice to know that people like my stuff, writing for me is most important

1 favorite line i've written:

I really like this line from chapter nine of public relations, which is when patrick and david get together.

"But kissing was still at the top of the list. Especially since every time he did kiss David, David would immediately give Patrick a crooked smile that always meant he was charmed by Patrick’s kisses. And who was Patrick to stop if it brought out that particular smile out of David? Patrick was only one man."

2021 Fic in Review

The lovely and talented @davidbrewer very kindly tagged me to do this - thank you my friend! I put off posting this in case I managed to finish the one I'm currently trying to polish off, but this week has been a bit crazy so it looks like I won't finish it before New Year. In terms of cold hard numbers, this will be supremely unimpressive, but I'm still proud of myself and posting anything at all is an achievement that means a lot to me, so I want to mark it!

Fandoms I’ve written in this year: 1 (Schitt's Creek!)

Did you write more/less fic than you thought you would this year, or about what you expected?: At the start of this year I hadn't written fic in months or years, and hadn't shared any in probably a decade. I've also written way more than I've actually finished and published. So I've definitely written much more than I would have imagined!

What’s your favourite story you wrote this year?: I'm actually really fond of all three I've posted, in their different ways. And there are many drafts I'm enjoying and would like to get finished. Of the ones I've posted, I think I might say Boys don't wear makeup is my favourite. It's a childhood gen fic and it's got the fewest hits by far, but I love it - I liked exploring the themes and it was a nice challenge to write from a seven-year-old's perspective, and I think it turned out pretty well!

Did you take any writing risks this year?: Honestly probably not? Besides taking the plunge to post again at all, which was a big deal for me but probably doesn't count as a risk to most people. But in drafts I have a half-written fic dealing with some heavy themes, and several early attempts at smut, which is new and scary for me!

Most popular story you wrote this year: Something we did, my most recent one featuring David and Clint during Meet the Parents!

Most fun fic to write: Maybe Boys don't wear makeup again, despite the angst in it, as I loved writing the children and it was also loads of fun working with a handful of OCs and drawing up a whole family tree so I had the relationships all sorted in my head.

Biggest surprise: A couple of fic rec lists (by @farm-witches-fic-recs and @scraregenrecs) included my works this year, which was a lovely surprise both times!

Do you have any fanfic/podfic goals for the new year?: Absolutely - I want to be quicker and bolder about finishing drafts and posting them, rather than there being weeks or months between single fics being published! A big part of that is trying to overcome the perfectionist instinct, which is a theme of my whole life (lmao), because it holds me up and I just want to share more and worry less! I'd also like to write a multi-chapter fic, and/or a series, somewhere along the way; I have a multi-chapter AU outlined in my head which I think would be a lot of fun and would probably appeal to people if I ever got it written, so I'd like to make some progress on that too.

Fanfic asks: 1, 11, 12

1. Favorite fic I wrote

I had fun dabbling in different fandoms this year, including challenging myself by writing about comedies for the first time ever, I think (Hacks and Schitt’s Creek - two very different vibes!), but I think I’ll have go with ghosts in the attic just because I’m still kind of shocked that it exists at all. I don’t know how or why the stars aligned for me to churn out 32k words about characters that I was still very new to and, at the time I started writing it, had only seen like a dozen episodes out of 22 seasons of, but here we are! It was really fun to be writing for an active fandom and awesome to experience the satisfaction of updating a fic that folks seemed to enjoy. I skimmed through it just now and while I’m not quite satisfied with the characterization in the first couple of chapters in particular now that I’ve given up pretending that I’m not going to actually watch SVU and am several seasons in, but overall I’m happy with it.

11. Fandom I enjoyed writing for the most

Probably SVU just in that it’s the only fic that I wrote more than a couple of thousand words for and more than one fic, however tiny the second one is, for. I also have like six fics in that fandom that I started and then never finished (it’s been challenging as hell to balance three active hyperfixations and an insane semester at work so a few of them are unlikely to ever be finished just because I missed the window where they would have been speculatively set prior to new episodes airing), but they were fun to brainstorm. It’s definitely the fandom I’ve been most bombarded by ideas and headcanons by this year.

12. Favorite character to write about

Probably Kara Danvers, an old favorite! This is cheating a bit because while I did post one Supergirl fic that was very Kara-centric this year, the other two Supergirl fics that I’ve been working on are as of yet unfinished - I expect them both to be published by the end of the year, though. One in particular is a post-finale Kara gen fic that sprung up on me unexpectedly, and I’m excited to finish in the next couple of days. I’ve reconnected with my love of Supergirl this year, which has definitely involved a lot of letting go what didn’t work and what I didn’t like (a lot) and focusing more on the characters and relationship dynamics that I love (also a lot) and enjoying the potential in them that fandom provides the opportunity to explore. It’s been fun.
