okay but. it doesn't get super dwelt on because the lords come in right after Byleth reads the diary and typically have uhhhh not so great responses to Byleth's grief that kinda supersede the emotional impact of his diary

but I remember when I first read it, being immediately hit with how hurtful that must have been for Byleth to learn right after their father's death? to read their own father describing them as creepy, unnatural, incomprehensible? to read the barely contained resentment in how he recounts their birth? to read him essentially asking 'was this thing worth trading Sitri's life for?'

yes, Jeralt was deep in his grief and heartbreak over Sitri's loss when he was writing that and it's perfectly understandable why his emotions towards Byleth were so complex and not particularly positive initially. but man, that must've hurt so much for Byleth to realize that the one person they had before the Monastery--the one person they thought understood them unconditionally--had secretly thought of them as that same freakish, emotionless Ashen Demon as the rest of the world

#first his reaction to their crying at his death... i think they'd take as a revelation that he never knew if they actually loved him #and then the diary! learning posthumously that he didn't even have a father's unconditional love for their child initially? #that even he essentially saw them as that ashen demon too? #it's just an extra fucking emotional whammy while byleth's already struggling to grapple with their grief over losing him #sto parlando #3h meta #3h talking tag #byleth eisner
