Alright, thoughts on Double Savage, episodes 5 and 6 (SPOILERS INCLUDED):

First off, @miscellar wrote THE POST(s) of the week (here and here) on where this show has gone and maybe will go. @miscellar, I LOVED HOW YOU PUT your second post: there’s a show-within-this-show. There are plot points about intergenerational trauma and patriarchy that are unfortunately getting swallowed by the script/direction/editing to push the thriller-aspect of what we’re getting. There’s dramaaahhhticalllly heightened emotional interactions about what’s happening on the ground, without enough exploration into why all of this shit is happening (HELLO, BENG.)

In other words, right now, this show is being hijacked by the director’s need to be all action-y, when in fact, this is still a show and a study into Big Family Trauma (BFT) that really needs to be worked out!

UNLESS -- what might be happening, as I was mentioning to friends watching the show earlier today -- is that that BFT is assumed to be known by the show’s majority Asian audience, thus allowing the crew of the show to skip through the emotional contemplation that *I* think I need to see a *leetle* more of to be convinced about where we’re headed. (I mentioned in previous reviews that I’m really touched by young Asians going on TikTok to process this show as compared to their own childhoods with difficult parents, and this is still ringing really true for me.) 

Unfortunately, with seeing the preview for how Rung comes back, I think we’re still gonna be on the drahma/action-y tip next week. I think the show has really sped through Win’s turn into hating Korn without enough examination or heartache on Win’s end -- I think we need more flashbacks or some current engagement with the loss of his brother (although I have some thoughts on that below for why this speed might be intentional). 

I hope the ship can right itself back up from that. (WTF, Rung’s parents -- I really feel for that plot point and I wish it hadn’t happened, because I believed Rung’s parents were two people who could have helped bring Korn back into the fold.) (Also, DEAR KORN, dude, I get you miss your family, but like, you’re showing up a LOT in sensi situations, and just like our dear Rung, maybe hold off for a sec, my man.) (But also, thanks for taking care of Li at the hospital.)

ALL THAT BEING SAID, I do very much agree with @miscellar that there are MANY elements to this show that will keep me watching.

To the Win point, about his speedy hatred for Korn: Win is now the “man of the house.” We see him engaging in typical patriarchal behavior with Li at the hospital (”you and Mom take care of Dad, I’ll handle the rest.”) We see him receiving 100% good compliments from his dad earlier about his work -- all while Win is actually struggling at work. 

Win is attempting to take on roles that I’d argue he’s not emotionally prepared for. I think, as well, we’ve gotten a really great spotlight into Li in the last two episodes that had me meditating on sibling roles and family systems that I want to unwind.

Both Li and Korn -- despite the pressures of their father for Li to hate Korn -- embody roles as older siblings, with Li protecting both brothers and Korn protecting Win (and, to a large extent, Li herself). 

Not to judge younger siblings (I am one myself) but we haven’t seen Win engage in a practice of “protecting” anyone through the unspoken roles of Asian family systems conduct. When he attempts to “protect” Rung -- Win is shooed off. 

The older sibling paradigm is really huge in Asian family systems, and I saw this being reflected in the way Li/Korn/Win’s mom spoke to Li right before the father collapsed. I saw Li’s mom looking at Li as if Li was an extension mother. This is super common for older siblings, ESPECIALLY ELDEST SISTERS, to basically be a second mother to the younger siblings. (I know that this happens in large traditional Christian families in America, but I’m not as expert on family systems in that space.) Li’s mom knew that Li was still trying to care for Korn as much as possible. 

We also saw that Li’s mom is in quite the denial about the reality of Korn ever coming back home. I will say as a parent myself, and asking my own folks about this -- there’s nothing more painful to a parent than seeing siblings fight. Li and Korn’s mom probably can’t live while thinking that the siblings are fighting -- but she also bears the weight of the impact of the cultural patriarchy that has hampered her family, and she may not even have the objective judgement to KNOW why her family has splintered. Li’s mom just wanting Korn home so the siblings could get along again -- that’s her center of how she’s viewing reality, and likely is either in denial of Beng’s lifelong impact, or actually unaware of it. To me, that part is based in strong reality.

So: Li and Korn have taken on their roles as protective older siblings, and Li right now is the most active link among everyone. (Toei really killed it these last two episodes.)

WIN, on the other hand, is stumbling along. AND, he’s suddenly got this HUUUUGE hatred for Korn. Like, WTF. 

What I THINK is happening here is a parallel of the patriarchy between Dad Beng and Win. Dad Beng and Win BOTH hate Korn now -- they say he’s a jinx, he should have never been born, he should go to jail. 

Dad Beng and Win both have extrasocial reasons why they hate Korn. Beng hates Korn because Korn was a jinx...during an economic recession.

Win hates Korn because Korn is a criminal? Okay, sure. Actually, Win’s extrasocial factor is jealousy. Win knows that Rung still loves Korn. And that jealousy -- the feeling of blame that Win has towards Korn for how Rung ended up as a fugitive -- is the factor that tipped Win over. 

Those extrasocial factors are the drivers to Beng and Win’s own misaligned reality towards Korn. Again, unfortunately, the script is not SITTING with this enough. It is definitely implied. But Win is off doing his CRAZY-ASS THING without catching himself, and at least at this point, being reprimanded at work clearly isn’t going to change him. Something big and emotional needs to happen to get him out of this. 

This ended up being long, but I’ll cite @miscellar‘s excellent second post again from today in TOTAL AGREEMENT that there’s a show-within-this-show that’s really worth watching, that’s rending my Asian heart, and that CAN BE CARRIED by the ridiculous acting talent of the cast. The show’s structure is not holding up this week to what this show CAN HOLD by way of depth. 

I’m hoping for the best. We’re gonna get a bitter Rung next week and I’m so here for it. I want to see a more complicated Win. Ohm/Korn is carrying this show -- I want to see the rest of the cast engaged again by the script. Let’s see.

What are the Bad Hannigram Takes you're encountering? I watched the show but never got too involved in the fandom so I am fascinated

Oh god I'm so sorry, I have no idea how coherent any of this will be if you haven't dipped into the fandom and even for my part I've been mainly watching and reading from afar but hereeeee... are my thoughts. Disclaimer that YMMV, let people have fun, etc., but I am a gigantic hater.

Character-specific tunnel vision where Hannibal is the center of the universe -- not just in the sense that he's, yk, the title character of the show and the most memorable character created by Thomas Harris but in the sense that all characters are evaluated by how much they support or obstruct Hannibal's God-given right to do whatever he wants to anybody ever. And my God, it is so, so boring.

Nothing is ever Hannibal's fault, either. Delicate use of the exonerative passive voice — oh it's so sad, Will was framed, Beverly was murdered, Abigail was killed, but by whom? Hard to say! Especially funny when people whip this out regarding shit even Hannibal plainly regrets, like framing Will and then not having Will to hang out with. In general downplaying Hannibal's agency is such a weird move with a character who takes so much pleasure in doing what he wants. "To what extent are people a product of their external influences and life traumas, to what extent is Hannibal capable of not killing" is a whole other conversation but it's just a very odd reading of the character and the show as a text.

Nothing is ever Hannibal's fault, because it's actually the fault of... [scans crowd] that woman over there! Weird misogyny, often overlapping with the above (bc boy howdy, the list of women who Hannibal kills, maims, tortures, or otherwise fucks over is not short — Abigail, Alana, Bella, Beverly, Bedelia, Miriam, Margot, Georgia… I guess Freddie makes it out okay?) but sometimes seemingly just because, or to exonerate Hannibal of all blame for his own actions toward Will, as if this is the kind of show where it’s vitally important our blorbos be morally pure. Like… I’m sorry but I don’t think this is the show for you if that’s the case. People are really weird about Alana, people are really really weird about Bedelia, people are turbo weird about Molly... I'm sure there are people out there being weird about Chiyoh but I haven't encountered them yet, and I feel like there's some uhhhh other factors in play there too.

Baffling ship war stuff even once the canon's long since finished airing. I'm a big multishipper for this fandom so the weird competitive approach where Will and Hannibal's love must be the only real love (or even the only real erotic desire) they've either ever experienced ever is really off-putting. Showrunner Word of God here regarding Will's sexual orientation is in itself a take that annoys me, as a humorless bisexual man, but this is more commonly expressed via weird not-joking "jokes" about how the only reason Hannibal would ever have sex with a woman would be as an elaborate ruse (and how she'd deserve it for being stupid enough to believe he'd be into women) or how Hannibal's a better wife to Will than Molly ever could be. Dude... relax... your pairing has a literal love theme like a 1990s erotic thriller, why are you this insecure. People will do this with characters who don't even appear in the show! Now why is Clarice in it???? I need people to just be normal.

Nice polite sweet tea-sippin' Southern boy Will, and his equally annoying twin brother, Will with an inexplicable and phonetically-rendered Southern accent. 50% me being an extremely sensitive buzzkill about how the text presents Will's childhood and how the romanticized vision of the American South people draw on is superficial and rooted in white supremacist nostalgia, 50% me being a person who can hear Hugh Dancy speak dialogue in a television show and recognize basic American regional accents.

General... accrued fanon, I guess? All the tropes and memes and fandom in-jokes and fandom characterizations that build on one another to the point where their relationship to the show as a text (or to the novels, for that matter) is pretty damn tenuous.

In general, and while I know where this is coming from as a lover of dark stories/horror media/dark and destructive love stories who’s gotten flak for all of that: people getting so defensive about shipping something ~*~*~*problematique~*~* that they take other people talking about the things that textually make their dynamic fucked up (even if they’re talking about those things as something they like or something they enjoy exploring with the canon) as an attack or a sign somebody's Interrogating The Text From The Wrong Perspective. I think the show itself has some narrative weaknesses that lend themselves to this kind of fandom circlejerk but please... please Lord... I just want to write about a really weird guy getting his dick stepped on whilst classical music plays and having the time of his life, why is everyone doing this to me

On the much more benign end of things, “Will is totally normal average everyman while Hannibal is weird and pretentious and fruity” bc it just makes them sitcom parents. Show!Will is a weird fucking guy in his own right! They're both weird! And they're in love!

8. constantly bragging about dating each other or keeping the relationship relatively secretive?

OK so their relationship starts off 100% lock and key secret bc ovi rome is super closeted and can't just publicly come out even if he wanted to. aaron would look ESPECIALLY bad PR-wise for him, not just because hes a dude but bc hes an brokeass line cook, covered in tattoos, with a dreadful online presence (chronic twitter oversharer and poster of mostly tasteful nudes). So roman would absolutely not be advertising this relationship at first and for a loooooong time after they start seeing eachother

aaron is fine with this arrangement even tho it does start to bother him a leetle bit but like. what can you do. a few of aaron's close friends do know tho bc they live together and its hard to hide roman when aaron literally has him over in the house. to those who do know abt roman, aaron literally fucking never shuts up about him. the whole household wants to beat him with sticks and rocks.

17. love at first sight or slow burn?

burn so slow it could beautifully caramelize an onion. both of them r incredibly skittish w intimacy and relationship and spend the first few months of knowing eachother playing elaborate gay chicken, insisting that it's not that srs ... but it Is That Serious. the connection at first meeting is instant tho they like look at eachother across a crowded room and aaron immediately is like 'ooooh no this guy is gonna brainpoison me huh' and its kinda the same for roman. except hes bad at his own emotions so its more like 'Must go bother this guy and maybe get him to put a cigarette out on me idk why'

18. cuddle in bed or need their space to sleep?

ROMAN WOULD HAVE YOU BELIEVE HE IS NOT A CUDDLER...but that is a Lie. man was built to be a little spoon (5'6 ... aaron is 6'0) !! this is a very nice sleeping arrangement. aaron also acts all gruff abt having his space but eventually cant fall asleep without his boyfriend... he runs v cold, and romans rodent-like metabolism makes him the perfect spaceheater.

tng update time!! i'm behind, oops, four episodes this time. saturday we did "the vengeance factor" and "the defector" and last night we did "the hunted" and "the high ground"

SIDE BAR one of those first two eps has flashing lights and i forgot which one. if you know PLEEEASE tell me so i can put it on my warnings section in my spreadsheet :(

the vengeance factor: surprisingly good! i keep being surprised when tng is good fr but we are in it now ig

i like how chill riker and deanna are when one of them has a passing interest in someone else. they're not totally exes because she'll still hold his hand and call him beloved when he's dying, but neither are they together, especially in a monogamous way. i'm telling you they're polyam fr put worf in that sandwich!!!

once again i thought i knew where something was going and once again i was wrong. i was so sure riker would tell this blonde assassin chick that he was so tall and so gentle and didn't she want to come to the side of peace for him? but she was like actually no <3 and made him kill her fr. he was so fucked up about it. second clode encounter of the space babes for riker where he has potentially accumulated trauma points. we will see if this trend develops further or if he remains down to clown

the defector: i kind of loved this one. unfortunately i think those giant square shoulders on the romulan uniforms fuck.

the shakespeare at the start of this one was wack but i'm happy i identified patrick stewart as one of the extras. by his voice, naturally

tng seems to be in the era of actually letting bad anf cuked up things happen. i felt so awful for this romulan dude by the end and THEN to find out it was a trick made it even worse.

and what REALLY fucks me up about this one, aside from the obvious, is that obviously the letter is never going to get delivered to romulus. we all know that, right? according to star trek (2009) which takes place in 2258, spock prime tells us that in 2387 ("129 years from now...") romulus bites it. tng s3 takes place in 2366. in 21 short years romulus is toast and there's no way things get peaceful enough before then that they get to deliver this letter. this dude was like i did it all so my daughter would grow up AND SHE'S NOT GROWING UP, HOMIE. she's getting VAPORIZED with nero's wife!!!

the hunted: there was a brainwashed supersoldier with ptsd in this episode and i don't want to talk about it

no i'm just kidding we can talk about it. soldier aside, it was a good political episode re: america's general lack of concern for veterans once they come home. hilariously awful that nothing has changed since 1990 or whenever this aired.

one of my favorite parts of this episode was near the beginning when picard was SHOCKED, almost comically so, that this soldier guy had eluded THEEE enterprise. catherine said it was because the enterprise is a bucket of bolts (and i heap curses upon her for this disrespect) but i said it was because they kleft it to worf, wesley, and data. and as much as i deeply adore all 3 characters there was not one adult in that situation. love and light.

the fight scenes in this were VERY exciting. i loved watching them all run around trying to outsmart each other. a fun adventure a fine set of ethics and a little brainwashed guy. 10/10

the high ground: i'll be honest, after one heavy political episode and the previous two before that having been "if two guys were on the moon and one of them killed the other with a rock would that be fucked up or what" kind of episodes i was NOT in the mood for another Political Statement, especially when they um. fell just a LEETLE bit short of the mark. i wanted something light to space out the heaviness a little

HOWEVER...beverly crusher.

she popped the fuck off in this episode!!! she was GREAT! did you guys know gates mcfadden could ACT? i genuinely did not know! but she can and she did! choking back tears when wesley was threatened! cold fury at her captors! you could genuinely believe mister terrorist could fall in love with a woman like that

so much of the time beverly has been A Woman or A Mother that she lacked any other sort of personality. and when she did have a personality it seemed that the people writing her were always trying to make her enough like bones that we like her but not so much like him that she feels like a bad knock-off (like pulaski) and then they never hit the mark

that said, the uh. statement in this episode seemed a little vague. "terrorism bad"? sure yeah but what else? are we saying "don't sympathize with terrorist because they're assholes" or are we saying "people only resort to terrorism when other avenues have been closed off to them"? why is the terrorist so handsome? why is riker cooperating with the cops? i like that they were like "you can't just come in here and deliver medical supplies to ONE SIDE and claim to be neutral" bc so true re: real life world superpowers but like then what? at the end when the kid out down his gun but that fucking cop lady killed the handsome terrorist should riker not have gone "you see those people as savages but today you were the only one killing people"?

like this episode seemed to have a lot of questions and ideas to put forth and then answered/resolved absolutely zero of them. i'd give it a pass if not for beverly. again, she was fucking incredible

14. What animal do they fear most?

Good question. I don't know. There are so many scary beasts in Exandria, and Xhorhas especially. 🤔 I can't think of any one animal in particular that scares them more than others, but anything that is big enough and likely to eat them alive, which is no small list, would make their legs shake a little.

27.  What causes them to feel dread? 

The thought of their family or loved ones being in danger. The thought of losing them, either because a relative died, or they themselves did. After all, goblins don't live too long comparatively, and if they come back a drow, or if they're away from the Luxon, then...dread. More recently, they've been feeling some dread regarding the Icozrin's objectives too. >(

A) Why are you excited about this character?

Dude, I have been excited about them being two-for-one for forever, and keeping that secret was the most delicious torture I've ever subjected myself to. Also, the Icozrin are part of the plot now holy fuck? It's been several sessions and I'm still not quite over it. Where is THAT GONNA GO? What about Espen/Oak being Beau/Caleb parallels wanting change for their country? I want this ray of sunshine to cover all of y'all in hugs and careless affection, and I am also excited about the gadgets they might make in the future! Lastly, I am greatly looking forward to any of us, all of us, being in grave peril! >)

G) What trait of theirs bothers you the most?

I think their avoidance when it comes to some more difficult and unpleasant things, especially their past life. Also, I guess I both love and hate the fact they are so young and full of childish wonder XD It's adorable and great fun to play, but then sometimes I feel a little impatient for Oak to find themself some more already... and I end back at the avoidance thing lmao.

Also, the fact they're not horny like most of my ocs because boy, I wish I could smooch at least a couple of npcs in this game. D: the tragedy.

👀 what's your interpretation of Hastur and the King in Yellow?

OKAY SO we're gonna start at the beginning. Malevolent. I started listening at the recommendation of one of my friends, and very thoroughly enjoyed myself right up until Yellow was introduced and he stressed me out soso bad. however I loved the concept, and the atmosphere, and kept thinking idly about how someone could act differently from Arthur in the same or similar circumstances. this combined with my theoretical Calamity character, a time traveling historian, into Jacqueline Little, member of the Temporal Historians Society and current resident of 1934 ish.

but why does this matter. WELL if this was discord I'd spoiler this rn however it's not so I'll just say MALEVOLENT SPOILERS and continue. the King in Yellow features heavily in this podcast, due to the fact that John is a leetl piece of him, fractured off and possessing his own free will now (good for him). but I don't know Anything about the cthulhu mythos, and any characterization I'd make would be based entirely on the podcast I'm already lowkey ripping off, which I'm deeply uncomfortable with. I decide to go and read The Source Material, finding that Lovecraft didn't even come up with Hastur, or the King in Yellow! Lovecraft got both names from Robert Chambers, author of the book The King in Yellow, about a (fictional) play by the same name, and he got the name Hastur (and Carcosa and a couple others) from a collection of short stories, including Haïta the Shepherd. first I read the Dunwich Horror, to get a feel for the vibe, then I decided I wanted Hastur Exclusive Content and read Haïta the Shepherd, and am now most of the way through the King in Yellow (book).

something interesting I found is that neither Lovecraft nor Chambers ever tried to combine Hastur and the King in Yellow in any of their works- Chambers simply used Hastur as a fun cool name, and the King as a fleshed out character of his own, and Lovecraft just had them next to each other in a list of Spooky Dudes. Admittedly Lovecraft also had Hastur's followers hunting the Mi-Go, and an association with the Yellow Sign, which might be where people made the connection later on? but within Their Own Works there is nothing indicating that those are two names for the same entity. THAT was put forward by a completely different guy decades later, about the same time people started associating Old Ones with elements and shit and that sounds boring so I'm ignoring it. TMA did a good job categorizing horror without detracting from it- these people did not.

I essentially made a list of everything I associate with Hastur and the King, seperately, and came to the conclusion that they are 1) brothers of a kind 2) part of Carcosa/straight up Carcosa 3) the same person born twice. they look very similar and end up having similar goals, but Hastur is the country while the King is the ruler. when Carcosa the island does something, they act as one. they are one. when the land revolts against the king, Hastur attacks his brother. when the king is cruel to his subjects, the King in Yellow acts accordingly. they essentially act as physical metaphors for the state of the nation, and their personalities fit. Hastur tends to be more nuturing than the King, while the King cares more about control and getting people to do what he wants, by whatever means necessary.

I'd also like to mention that Hastur is the name of a lake in the King in Yellow (book/play), which is why Hastur is a manifestation of the land itself. he's also the lake at the same time, and possibly the moons though I think they share custody of the stars and suns.

i love Yuuji so much. where do i even begin. he feels so...genuine. i have never enjoyed a shonen mc like i do with him. he’s just so! he’s a boy! he’s a teenager! he feels so real, so true! he’s compassionate, he apologizes when it seems like he isn’t listening, he wants to help. all he does is to try and help with his biggest enemy being nestled right inside his very own soul. everything about him makes me want to cry bc he’s trying so, so hard to be kind in a world that constantly punishes him for it. and yet he never stops. he refuses to stop. and its killing me. its killing me how desperate Yuuji is to at least leave some semblance of an imprint on people behind when he inevitably dies. he’s 15. i am going to fucking cry.

He’s a physically affectionate dude! His Gramps was an old grump so affectionate words were rare, but a warm hand on his head was a constant. So he’s not super bothered when people invade his personal space – he links arms with Nobara constantly, he’ll lean closely over Megumi’s shoulder to see what he’s doing, he laughs when Gojo ruffles his hair. It grounds him somewhat, to know that people are still there.
